Do any of you have damage due to taking your dolls out or damage from mistakes during photoshoots or anything like that? I'm insanely protective of my doll, but I'm afraid mistakes will happen when I finally do photoshoots and meet ups.
No, I don´t have any damage on any of my Dolls... and I nerver damaged any Doll during a Photoshooting... I´m not so overprotective but I always try to make sure that they stand well by themselves once I let them stand free... Until now nothing happend to them
A number of my dolls have chips, dents, scratches...I'm wildly clumsy. It happens. I don't think it makes me a bad owner, and I don't judge anyone else for it either. Don't worry about it.
The only time one of my dolls has ever been seriously damaged is when a different doll that was meant to be completely stable fell and took this doll with her and she hit the corner of my desk and a piece of her leg chipped off. I've taken dolls to meets, photo-shoots at public pools, 22 hour flights and it was while my dolls were displayed on a shelf that the worst damaged occurred. I've had dolls face plant, tumble backwards off ledges, with no damage and it was just bad luck that she clipped the corner of the desk, which is what made her break. These things will happen but the thing to remember is that most things can be fixed and if you can't fix it yourself, there's almost certainly someone out there who can fix it for you.
Yes. My Spiritdoll Atropa's body arrived with a finger broken off. It was her left ring finger, so I just worked it into her story and started working on a teeny display box for it.
My cat bit off one of my doll's fingers. (I don't own the doll anymore and I don't leave them unattended around that cat anymore!!) I just glued it back on and attached wires and gears to make it look like a steampunk thing. My other doll was damaged when I sent her off to a bad faceup artist. The hand was "misplaced" and her leg just above the ankle had a chip missing. I was just thankful to get my doll back so I didn't really mind that she had a piece broken in her leg and she was hand-less for quite some time before Luts finally sent me a new one. She was my first doll and I still love her very much. But no, I've never had any major accidents during photoshoots. Sure, my dolls have taken a tumble or two, or their legs just "kick" and they topple over but no real damage has ever come from that. Not even scratches in their faceups! *knocks on wood* (now that I've said it, something terrible will happen! Yikes!) The biggest problem I have is staining. Ugh. So much staining. Usually I can clean them well enough with a magic eraser or whatever.
My doll has more of a stain than damage. When I was working on a clothing project I had her next to the fabric I was marking off and I bumped the table which caused her to fall over... onto the Sharpie I was using... Luckily it's a VERY small mark on her ankle so it's barely noticeable. But I know it's there, and it brings me great shame. I banished sharpies from my work room that day.
I've had a few very minor incidents. I try and be careful with my dolls, of course, but I bought them as creative vessels so I'm not going to focus so much on keeping them immaculate that I can't use them! I dropped my first doll's head once while carrying it around for a faceup and it hit a corner and got a small dent on the edge where the headcap attaches to the head. It's just a dent and not a chip, so I think I could probably boil it out pretty well, but it's small and never shows anyway, so I haven't bothered. Lucky that it wasn't on her face! My other SD backflipped off a table once while I was trying to draft a pattern for her, but luckily it was a low table and she fell onto carpet and didn't get a scratch. That was soooo scary though. And most recently, my tiny's faceplate popped off and fell while I was trying to squeeze her wig back on, after I had JUST finished her new faceup... it left a teensy shiny scuff on her cheek, but luckily it's very small and in a lightly-blushed spot, so I can live with it.
I once dropped the headcap part of my doll's head. I was so mortified I didn't pick it up for a few seconds. Luckily - no scratch, nothing, but I almost got a heart attack. My doll (the first and the only one for now) spends her time in her original boxing, covered with her special blanket and waiting for her wardrobe to be made by me. Yes, I am paranoid about my doll. :P
My dolls don't have any damage, per se, but Aelic does have a pretty bad wig stain that I just haven't bothered to get rid of. It's always covered, so I don't really see the point. I'll probably clean it when I wipe his face for a new faceup. My girl Lacey also has a couple little chips from her faceup right around here eye from when I was careless removing one... She had only been back from the artist a couple weeks, so I felt really stupid. It's not terribly noticable, thankfully, and some eyelashes will cover the chip on the top lid, but it still annoys me.
One of my doll's elbow have a corner broken because I bent it without aligning it properly. I glued it back on and think of it as his scar or something
I'm currently without dolls (waiting my new one to come), but I used to take my girls out of home for photos. Never had a really bad accident, just a couple of small falls (especially in my mother's house because of her dog) with no scars at all. I guess I'm lucky because I'm really clumsy and have black marks all over because I'm always tripping or hiting things...luckly never with dolls
My doll chateau doll has a couple small chips in her ankle, and my gf's dc madeline has a a bigger chip (minor chunk missing really...) in her wrist because dc sent the doll with a hook that is too splayed out. Otherwise the other ten or so dolls in the house don't seem to have damage.
My Dollzone Death has a little nick on her behind -- I was making a tapeform of her, and the scissors slipped and scratched her bum while cutting the tape and clingwrap off. It's not a huge scrape and because it's practically in her buttcrack, it's not really ever going to be visible so I'm not worried.
Most of my dolls don't have any problems but a few have some minor damage. The worst is a doll I had outside who fell over onto the sidewalk. Thankfully her face was not harmed in any way as I don't think I could have forgiven myself, but her hand was scuffed and she had large chips to both her nipples. It seems her chest saved her lovely face which does make me laugh a little. Despite that one instance I've had very good luck with my dolls over the years and most of them are still like new.
I accidentally scratched my doll while making shoes, and once I got a drop of Super Glue on one on their heads. I am a bit of a klutz. But the damage isn't super bad (I think I might even have managed to get the Super Glue off somehow), so I don't worry too much.
Mine are all in really good shape. I only have one with a broken finger- and I glued it back on. One came with a knee crack that I just kind of have to live with. It was purchased second hand so it didn't come from the company with the crack. Same with my MSD Doll Chateau body. I got it second hand and it came with the sort of standard missing elbow piece. There is a spot on DC elbows that tends to just break off.
Oh Lots! Most of them I've repaired but some dolls have small nicks and scrapes here and there near the joints from being handled and taken outdoors and so on. Generally it's an easy fix for me, but I have a large collection so until each doll gets a spa day I often have to leave them with a nick or two, which I fix once I have them in pieces. It's just part of how my collection works.
My doll has been to several conventions, outdoor photoshoots in the woods and on a cliffside, traveled with me on planes and in cars, and never got any damage... until she fell over on my kitchen table and broke three fingers.
Quite a painful post to share... my doll got a chipped off face-up on the nose from a fell, luckily it wasn't that noticeable so I decided not to send for face-up maintenance because $$$. All of my dolls' bodies so far are blushed so after playing them for a while, we have chipped off paints everywhere ((( But I don't really mind since I can just remove the blushing whenever I want, but currently too lazy to do so.
I do, on some, not on others. Most of it is just tiny scratches, no major breakage. Stuff you won't even see unless you're specifically looking for it. The first time any of my dolls got damaged, I had a meltdown. I was doing a photostory, and my second doll fell while I was posing my first and chipped his nose. I sat in the floor and hugged him and cried. A couple months later, my first doll fell ON CARPET and scratched his eyebrow deeply. I still haven't figured out how on earth that happened. I just wrote that into his character. Now, after 9 years in the hobby, I've just come to accept it. More often than not, it's so small, I can easily fix it, either by buffing it out or modding it, whatever it may be. I can't stand broken hands, but luckily, they can usually be purchased separately and replaced.
No, my dolls do not have any damage besides for fantasy parts blushing that is chipping in normal areas around joints and an ear tip that was broken in shipping (faceup was also slightly damaged) but I received a replacement from the company for the latter. I'm very gentle with all of my things, and my BJDs are no different. I would feel sick if something were to end up broken!
so far my dolls have a little scratch or damaged face-up (a bit) never have the major damage so far ^_^
I think what constitutes damage will be different depending on who you ask. For some, yellowing and a faded faceup count, for others it means their doll is literally cracked apart somewhere. Gladys has a broken piece inside her jointed foot (it broke the very first time I tried them out! She came strung ridiculously tight, that bit of resin had no chance.) Uriah has a very faint chip in his faceup that can only be seen supersuper close and in the right lighting. He also has a scratch in the gloss on his lip from when I let someone irresponsible hold him at a meetup and she banged his hands against his face repeatedly while sloppily posing him around like he was a kid's toy. Who freaking does that? I think a few people at that meetup had heart attacks on my behalf. ... Oddly enough, I don't think either of my less expensive dolls have any damages, aside from the very faint surface scratches that tend to appear from age and wear. Figures!
Hmmmm my dolls don't have any heart-stopping damage that needed major surgery, and hopefully I get to keep it that way. My first doll, being the first and thus the receiving end of my noob antics, does have tiny chips and scratches that are unnoticeable unless I pointed them out. My second doll is far more pristine -- I think the only damage he has is inside the head, where the S hook had nicked out a tiny bit of resin due to pressure.
My FL Chic Line Rou has a dent on his neck from the S hook. I bought him secondhand and knew of the damage. I think it gives him character, almost like a birthmark. I know he's special, lol.
My dolls don't have any damage from taking them out and about, and I ride public transpo everywhere. They've also been on planes, inspected by security - and no damage. I never leave/put my dolls in situations where "accidents" can happen though.
A few of my dolls have minor scrapes and scratches, but most are still in very good shape. Even the ones that are 10+ years old have little more than wear on their faceups. I have one girl that has a crack about a centimeter long on her butt, right above leg. She was second hand and I received her that way though.
Oh my XD I do my best to keep them in good shape, but a couple of them have had accidents over the years. I have a Ducan that took a faceplant on a cement harbor stone -.- Luckily there was a skilled modder who was able to fix and reshape it. But I've also had dolls come with joint cracks from being strung too tight, cats that have eaten wool wigs (and chewed on hands... which is why my dolls all live outside of the cat's reach now XD). Unexpected things happen. It's good to know how to repair light damages, I think XD
Some of my dolls have subtle damage, like dents from when I removed their hands and placed the S hooks over their wrists. Another has a gouge from a sewing pin I've decided is an in-character scar. The worst is from my first faceup attempt. I left the head to soak in a laundry scoop of nail polish remover. When I used a toothpick to remove paint residue from between her lips, tiny chunks of resin came off. The color of the scoop also came off in the liquid to stain the head. Fortunately, the lip damage is only noticeable if you really look for it, and the staining's only visible when she's out of her wig.
Im pretty rough with my dolls. I love outdoor photo shoots. I put them in the ocean, take them hiking on trails, and I have never had any damage. My faceups to tend to wear down pretty quickly but that is more due to how often I handle them. That is why I learned to do my own faceups, so its really not a problem.
My very first outdoor photoshoot, I was so careless I left my doll in an unstable position and he keeled over, faceplanting on the concrete. His beautiful (seriously, I cried) faceup is chipped right down to the resin. Aside from that he's an older doll so he's yellowing very unevenly but noticeably. I'll never part with him so the yellowing I don't mind, but the chipping I'm mad at myself for being careless.
For years, the only damage any of my dolls had was my first doll who has a little imprint on his hand from where my cat decided to bite him. They never got broken or damaged from me taking them out for photoshoots. A couple years ago though I got into modding and now most of my dolls have been intentionally carved, sanded, or sculpted in some way
All of my girls have a blemish or three on their faceups and/or blushing from general wear-and-tear. Foxglove (Soom Amber) has a crack down the back of her head that's been sealed with epoxy; she came to me this way and it's never been an issue. I've had to glue in a lot of magnets before, and the older ladies have worn-in joint sockets, never mind the resin aging. Basically: I don't buy my dolls to sit pretty in a glass case. That said, I've always been commended on their condition despite this?
Once dropped my minifee on accident when I was opening a drawer and didn't notice her feet were caught on the drawer and as I opened she fell face first onto the floor. Her faceup was slightly damaged around her nose but other than that nothing else was damaged.
I'm just like you when it comes to my dolls. I try my best to avoid any damage. I'm not so worried about their face-up as I am about their resin. A face-up can easily be painted over. However, scratches require more work! I did some modding mistakes with my first doll that I'm still bothered by today. I sort of count it as damage. I tried to make his sixpack less muscular. But, it ended up looking weird I also glued a fake diamond into his bellybutton using nail glue, thinking he'd look cute. He ended up with a bellybutton full of glue that wouldn't come out. And I sat him down on rough surfaced stone stairs outside. He was wearing short shorts, so the back of his legs got terribly scratched up. I tried to repair the damage with some sanding. It turned out OK luckily. His ankles chipped while restringing him. So that also had to be fixed! I was inexperienced with my first doll and too bold! So I did a lot of mistakes with him. But from these mistakes I learned to be more careful and leave modding to an experienced person
If you're worried about damage, be cautious where you put your doll if you do photoshoots outside! I have seen pictures of dolls climbing trees though. And I have seen pictures of dolls sitting on rocks or bathing in lakes. I guess some people don't worry as much as we do about a little damage. (Not that there is anything wrong with that of course.) I remember I was at a doll meet. And I re-strung my doll. His ankle chipped and I freaked out! But the person next to me said, " oh, that happens sometimes. It's no big deal!" All I could think about was my baby had gotten hurt
My first doll has some chips in the neck where the s hook sits. When I first started the hobby I wasn't very careful unfortunately when taking her head off.
I am careful and take really good care of my dolls. Most of my dolls don't have any damage but due to the nature of this hobby, sometimes no matter how careful you are, there will be some damage. Funnily enough, the ones more loved will probably have more damage hahaha... First my DDs. I love them but due to the porous nature of vinyl, they both have minor stains. I have just let them sit on the couch and boom! Butt stain!!! It's so frustrating but I know it's treatable. My one off kohya came to me strange. her right hand connects weirdly to the body. I don't know how to describe it but it's loose on the ball joint on the hand. There is a chip on the ball joint of the right hand due to this, though I am not sure if she came to me this way or it was my fault. I think chips on body can be inevitable no matter how careful you are. There is a lot of tension and friction on the body, and the metal hooks are sharp.
I try to be careful. I keep them out of light and handle with care. But sometimes they seem to have a mind of their own. I've had two dolls bend a straight leg on their own and heard a crunch. They had chipped their knees. I was doing a photo shoot and a head went flying off in the air once too. It ended up with just a small shine on the nose. And I just let a new girl try on my siggy girls neck ruffle and clown hat and found that the neck ruffle may have rubbed some black fabric dye onto her shoulders and neck. It looks like shadowing and I am pretty sure the body didn't have it before. All in all I figure I have been lucky. I think it is important to enjoy these dolls and a certain amount of risk is just going to be there no matter how careful you are. I was pretty upset when that head went flying though.
I've been pretty fortunate so far; I dinged Johnny's faceup while trying to dig some of his girlfriend's clothes out of storage, but that's it. When I crouched I somehow snagged Johnny's shoelace, and blooey, he came crashing down on my head. He's missing part of an eyebrow now, a fixable problem. My other boy Alistair has some damage (two broken and well-repaired fingers), but he was secondhand and thus came that way. I cover his "battle scars" with rings.
minor scratches i guess. have dropped my doll before, but only noticeable thing is the face up sealant chipped. i'm not overly protective to my doll, but i wouldn't want them to fall over... however things happen (strong wind blowing doll away during photo shooting and stuff like that)
My first doll is probably the most nicked up. He's got scratches here and there on his body from tumbles and like metal fasteners on his clothes digging into the resin and he doesn't have a magnetic headcap so the resin loop that his s-hook needs to catch is super scratched up from when I can't quite get the hook through it. My other dolls are more pristine, but I often manage to nick the area around the top of their neck because I like tight stringing and sometimes the s-hook slams down on the neck when my hand slips. >_> I greatly enjoy Dollshe's design to have a metal ring around the neck hole!!!
Some of my dolls came to me with damage secondhand, the worst of which being broken fingers. The worst damage I've done to my dolls myself was when my kid delf cherry got a stress fracture on his arm from the elastic being too tight. Although that was how he came strung from the company, it was over a year later before the tension got to him. Several of my dolls have gotten minor knicks or scratches over time but mostly it happens at home and not during a shoot. I once had a doll lose a leg in a small creek during a shoot but I did fish it back out and everything was fine Actually, that was the same doll that got the stress fracture. He's a problem child, heh.
Maaaany years ago, one of my MSDs did a literal flip off the kitchen counter and landed on the hard tile flooring. But since he'd fallen forward but done a flip, he ended up landing on his back, so there wasn't a scratch on him. But holy crap did that terrify me watching it happen. The most damage that I've ever done to any of my dolls involved staining. One of my other MSD girls ended up with dark stains around her head from her black wig... You can't see it as long as she's wearing a wig, but, eh... yeah, watch out for those wigs that can actually stain the resin. I did end up damaging a doll when doing a face-up once a very long time ago. This was years ago before I understood that Windsor & Newton is the best thing to use to remove a doll face-up (seriously, that stuff is miraculous). Before then, I was using acetone and an magic eraser... But the doll whose face-up I was wiping off was made of really soft resin, and I actually ended up sanding out the crease in his eye with the magic eraser.... I was so mortified. Learned a very valuable lesson. Some resin is pretty soft, and also, magic erasers are slightly abrasive.
I have one that has a broken ear - I bought him that way. And one with a scratch on his face because he fell off a table. Other than that, I have some paint that doesn't want to be removed, some staining from badly applied pastels, using pink nail polish remover to 'soak' at some recalcitrant paint (the paint came off but the doll was permanently stained pink) and the usual stains from wigs and jeans.
No but I once thought I did cause damage when the box fell with my BJD as I was trying to get them out out nothing happened but still it was a big scare.
My favourite doll's face has some scratches. It was my fault and i was criyng after i saw what have i done. I was not enough careful with the clean, I used a brand-new sponge and i didn't washed it before i used it to clean my doll's face. ;( I think maybe iron powder were inside the new sponge or something hard little motes. I boiled his face in hot water 10 minutes and the scratches got smaller. Fortunately the damage is mostly invisible with faceup. He is my favourite. Maybe i will order a plus head for him as spare.
Ahh. Recently I was taking some photos of my Ellana outside near some brick, and a small breeze pushed her forward... she almost landed on her face. I caught her right on time, but needless to say, I grabbed her and marched right back inside. Lol.
My favorite boy has a peg in his headcap that broke, glued it back in place but it's still not secure ^^; It does not really affect it, since his magnet is so strong and at least I can identify him from his twin who has the same head :'D
My boy Kit is stained from a faceup mishap. It can be mostly covered with a faceup but I know it's there and I'm responsible.
Just be down for mishaps sometimes. I'd almost say I'd rather have a damaged doll to the point she's still together than an unplayed doll still in the box. All my dolls have little perks to them, Or are stained to the point it's appreciated. One doll has a full back tattoo. Just be careful with your dolls. I had an unnamed airlines damage a doll in checked baggage so.... but it was sorta my fault as I had her all bunched up and no extra padding in the suitcase, so I learned what not to do.
Oh man yes! I have a feeple65 that has broken cracked knees and her left arm socket is cracked and a chunk is missing. I got her third hand. Also I accidentlu just touched her wet sealant on her cheek/ear and removed partial blush. I’m not gonna sweat it
I damaged my first doll within 20 minutes of getting him. Luckily, it was only the little lip that helps hold his faceplate on that broke. I had bumped the chair that I had left him standing on and he fell. I couldn't even turn around to look for a few minutes. I was so relieved when I saw the damage wasn't that bad. I use a silicon head cap now to help keep his faceplate on. I'm more careful now about leaving them to stand by themselves, and where I leave them to stand while leaning against things. There hasn't been any more resin damage of my doing, at least not by mistake. I have done a few modifications, and once I scratched a face-up (not a big deal since I do my own face ups -- I just need to wait until summer to redo it, so I'm not even sure that counts as damaged). And there was that one time a second-hand doll body arrived to me with a broken finger. A little glue fixed him up, and now it's hard to tell it was ever broken to begin with.
