I just adore smartdoll! I wish they were recognized with the other bjd on DOA but I am glad I found the off-topic section.

 

Oh my goodness @sagearella that is the prettiest Howl I have ever seen. I know Smart Doll faces are an acquired taste for some hobbyists but I love the look. Did you sew the jacket? It looks lovely and the other clothes complement the design so well!

Might post my girls here at some point, but I haven't done much recently so idk. Was looking at some old writing I did on my doll blog, which I also need to update. BJDlog on Tumblr if you wanna have a look, but it's pretty dead. Info about my SMD character-verse is on the bottom link of the "Links" section- it's called "Hibernation Protocol" or some such. Funny how the story concept pretty much revolves around my Smart Dolls now despite having started out as the "Resinoid Initiative".

I'm kind of curious about those old USB hub torsos atm... I heard concerns that they might heat up the vinyl too much but it would be so "in character" for one of my girls so I may need to scrounge around for one secondhand. Anyone else into the earlier robot-esque modifications that used to be available? I know the actual robotics project itself was scrapped ages ago but I love the idea of making my Mels or Felis into an android of sorts, even in looks. The new pics in Danny Choo's Instagram of the more android/mechanical mannequin bodies look cool and honestly if they're even slightly posable and available I will be seriously tempted.

Oh, forgot to mention-- for Arcane fans out there, I'm saving to commission an Etsy wig maker for a custom wig based on the character Jinx-- my Felicity is going to cosplay her when she's not being, well, herself. Not going the full route w/ tattoos, faceup and whatnot since it's just a cosplay, but I love and relate to the character so much! We're both a lil crazy lol. Not to mention I still have plans for a more dedicated resin shell of Jinx as well, but that's for another topic(and my signature ).

I got my Smart doll Challenge not too long ago! She almost instantly decided her name was Sin (still dunno why but alas). I'm still waiting for her replacement eyes that I ordered for her as well as a different wig but for now, she's looking cute AF.

My wife and I got a smart doll each just over a month ago and I don't think I've ever enjoyed dressing dolls in co-ordinated not-quite-matching outfits as much as we do with these two! They just look very sweet together ❤️ (Left is my wife's Nostalgia, right is my Monday, both in tea.)

I got myself a Fortitude!



She won't tell me her name but good lord does she have personality to spare. While my Crimson has chill energy, this girl radiates "I will make a mess of your pots and pans" vibes. I'll have to go looking for a nice, strong name to fit her!

 

She looks so sweet though! Sweet and badass aren't mutually exclusive though, as my Mels and Felis can attest. I love the glasses, those are the Genesis ones right? Are they good quality or more like flimsy? The price intimidated me but they look so good--

I highly recommend them! I have the OG Kizuna and I do love her, I hope you can get one someday (or the remake, if that's the one you prefer)! She has my favorite expression of the "originals" lol. Though I would love an OG Mirai someday, my wallet says 3 Smart Dolls is enough when I have all the other projects I have yet to finish. I love watching the new releases, but Semi-Real ones don't fit with my other ones atm- I prefer old-school.

Someday I will have the time and the motivation to take pics of my dolls again. I wish I had a cherry tree since it's that season now (or has been, dunno if it still is as I'm a bit out of touch rn) because I have a lovely umbrella I got with that pattern (you can see it HERE- I haven't updated my Smart Doll Instagram since like xmas I think though)

I'd love to see cherry blossom, or other nature as the northern hemisphere gets warmer, pics with other SMDs though! I wish they had more of a presence on this forum but Off Topic is Off Topic I guess ^^; DollDreaming seems to have better rep but still rather sparse unfortunately. Is Instagram the main SMD hangout or are there other places I'm missing?

 

There are active SmD groups on Facebook.

 

They're lightweight but feel really sturdy. I haven't twisted them about like they do on their page's pictures, but it feels like you'd have to do something pretty substantial to them to break them. So as someone who has glasses as an essential part of their doll's look they're totally worth it!

 

Ah thanks yeah, I forgot about the Facebook groups and such. Might try being active there again, it's a bit confusing though do deal with the different group's moderation styles- sometimes I might want to express something critical but it seems that's heavily frowned upon there. I think my Instagram has been occasionally set to post to my Facebook main page, but I try to keep that setting off (it can't be turned off as a default afaik- I've tried...). Facebook can be fun but it lags my browser super bad and I admit I'm kind of intimidated by the complexity now.

Bleh, sorry that kind of turned into a rant about Facebook sort of. I still might look into it since I do want to be able to share my girls more. Are there any particular groups that might be worth looking into? Last I was active the main one was Smart Doll Lovers but it disbanded at some point. Now there seem to be a whole bunch, not sure which I'd be most into. I think I'd prefer one allowing all vinyl dolls like Dollfie Dream, Obitsu, etc. but that Smart Dolls still have a decent presence in. Not sure if there's one like that though, will have to do some searching.

I recently purchased my first Smart Doll, Dauntless in Tea, and I'm really loving her. I love the ease of changing her hands. She's really very poseable for a vinyl doll too!

It was a lovely sunny day here - so took my two gals outside for a quick
photo. Both are Tea vinyl - Dauntless and Genesis.

 

Smart Dolls are what got me into this hobby to begin with! I had booked a trip to Japan for Nov 2020, and then Covid hit and cancelled those dreams. During my trip, I had wanted to visit the SMD store to see if I would want one, but I ended up just ordering my first girl online—Resolute!

I went a bit wild from there, and I think I was up to 7 or 8 at one point. Earlier this year, I got my first Minifee, and my interest in SMD declined so much that now I only have 2 girls left. I don’t think I’ll ever sell my Resolute, as she was quite special.

Even though I learned I’m much more into the resin mini dolls, I have to thank SMD for getting me started!

 

Wow so much has changed in smart doll world! I have one, a smart doll ebony, but she doesn’t get much love because the sd size was never my favorite. A loooong time ago Danny mentioned a pocket doll and I still hold out hope he will offer 1/6 or 1/4 size for these girls because they would surely take over my house… I’d love a fortitude and a blue girl in smaller size

 

@ArouraAnn I agree. I have an Ebony too. I got her in 2016 and she has been with me since then. It was so refreshing to have a darker vinyl skin color back then. I was finally able to create the character I wanted. Before that she was a DD but her skin color was always wrong. I had a Tomorrow too. I love her semi realistic face but my Panchita (Ebony) always will be my favorite , But the poor thing has been wearing the same outfit for about a year. Finally today I changed her outfit and wig and took some pictures of her again.

Right? I had two Angel Philias, and liked them but didn't love them, so out they went. 'No more vinyl', I thought, 'I'll never be able to afford a Smart Doll'. ...Well, turns out Smart Doll is pretty economical when you buy secondhand. My gosh are they sturdy. I don't feel like I'm going to break anything when I move a piece!

Aurora's first Otakon I only have one Smart Doll, an anime-style Liberty named Aurora. She will probably be my only Smart Doll since the guy dolls are near impossible to obtain.

 

Oh wow looking at those pics of your girl makes me wish I got a Summer when she was around! I know there's a lot of new designs now but I have a soft spot for the earlier ones. Sana is such a sweetie too.

I haven't done much with my girls lately due to mixed feelings due to [drama] but I want to get mine out more than just my yearly vacation trip. I've been so busy... but I do still love them very much and I would be interested in looking for some more cuties secondhand someday when I'm done with other doll plans. They certainly are addicting! And secondhand prices have been looking pretty good at least for some of them. So, maybe.

@Cattya Well, I'm sure that Summer will eventually come back so you might get another chance to get her, if you really want. It's just the question how long it might take until all the regular dolls are back up again.
I'd love to get me a new SmD as well, but finances are rather tight at the moment.

Challenge on a cold winter day

 

How often are male Smart Dolls put up for sale on their website? Only once a year or do they not make them anymore?

 

There is no set schedule for male doll releases. You just have to be lucky to get one during a chaos drop or the rare chance some crop up on the main site or the official seller sites. I've heard rumors of they're being redone so maybe more will be sold sometime in the future.

Hopefully, I would really love to see the variety that they have for female doll translate into male dolls too.

As excited as I am to try the Evolve frame, I am 100% rubbing my hands together for whenever they do that chaos body drop for the old models so my heads can have their own bodies! I gave myself sympathetic dysphoria just putting them on Dimension's body for photos. >.<

Does anyone here have a doll with the new evolve frame yet?
I used to have SmD Nami, but I didn't quite bond with her. It seems the new frame is a little more weighty, stable, and clicky instead of creaky, according to Danny's own words, which sounds like it would solve the issues I had with it. But I'm wondering if anyone has it in their hands and could confirm or deny those claims

 

While I've got a list of girls I'd love to get to try the evolve frame with, I'm currently paying off three layaways, so they'll have to wait a few more months. I'll post feedback once I get one if no one else has.
