Do you have a Smart Doll? Pt.2

Sep 28, 2020

    1. Maybe, I'm way better off than I was! So, huge improvement! :) I feel like I have a chance now, even if it's a teeny chance.

Yeah that's...a weird way to do things. I never would have guessed it's so much to deal with, I know a lot of people who have a smart doll, I saw them in person long before I ever saw them online.

    2. My Tomorrow made it to the states. God willing I will get her by Friday :)

      • x 1
    3. Yeah, it didn't use to be this way either; the store/website worked as any other

    4. My original Strength arrived the other day ^o^ and I think I've gotta buy some more solid stands if I wanna fit more dolls into my house. (I do XD and as much as I love the telescopic stand, apparently it's not intended for long-term use.) I had her on layaway for 6 months, as she was discontinued while I was still saving for Singularity... and I didn't want to spend my Singularity money juuuust in case! Now they're both chilling next to each other on the shelf. :D so happy she's home!

(Next on the wishlist: Chitose multiverse in tea hopefully, and tea Prowess :D )

    5. My Paquita made it home. My beautiful smartdoll Tomorrow made it home. She is so gorgeous and the crappy pictures I took don’t make her any justice to her gorgeous skin color. It looks so red on pictures but in person is a beautiful dark chocolate color. I wish the camera could capture the real color. I can’t believe I didn’t like the new cocoa color. I was so wrong it is more gorgeous than the old one. Also I’m glad I stop resisting temptation I’m so happy to have her home.

    6. My first smart doll is on her way to me! She's a secondhand (but essentially brand-new since the original owner bought it only a few months ago and only opened it once) Fortitude in Tea skin, and comes with everything but her wig and eyes, which is fine as I want to customize her with a new wig and eyes anyway! I have her wig ready, and I'm commissioning a friend who makes resin jewelry and miniatures to try their hand at making a pair of glittery pastel green eyes for her ^_^ I'm excited, though it seems it will be a long time to wait for shipping as she's coming all the way to Canada from Singapore.

    8. Your Paquita is stunning!! that color is beautiful and the way you styled her is perfect for her, I love her afro!

I got my first Smart doll yesterday!:D

Why didn't anyone ever mention how fast is the shipping for SmDs? I wasn't prepared lol I got my shipping notification the day after I ordered the doll. I was like "am I dreaming" ? when I read it could be 15 days I thought that was so cool because with BJDs and Volks DDs I usually wait months...many months *coughs*wheresmydollsoom?*coughs* so yeah, this beauty is with me now and I'm so smitten with her, she is perfect!

I haven't taken pictures but as soon as I do I will share here^^

    10. @MrFjmg2003 Love your Paquita and her blue outfit
@VampireAngel13 I totally agree with you about how tough it is to get a doll from Danny, particularly if it is gamer personality. FYI, Fabricfriends had a Batgirl available yesterday for only $1600. What a bargain. I would love to get a blue Moment but everyone in the world wants her and they stay up all night waiting for her to drop. I share your pain.

My sweet Genesis finally arrived. I had to work hard to bring this girl home.

    12. @Frillseeker: No, I bought the jacket and skirt in 2012. Added other stuff I had. Realized I have enough items to be creative...trying not to keep spending on doll clothes!

(Ha, it doesn't work, I can't resist some of them. My dolls have better clothes than me.)

Glad you like Challenge, thanks for the compliments.

    19. I broke and got a cinnamon Kabuki, she should be here by Wensday or so says tracking. Technically she will be my first female Smart Doll, as Haruka my first version Eiji is male and Hero my Genesis 1 is a transmale. (Hero even has a male chest part.) Bonus nice thing as I got Hero a hands pack so he could hold stuff Kabuki and him can share that. She will need a new name and charcter idea, but that likely will take some play time to figure out.

    21. Well I love the Chaos Outlet, I got an uncut male shell and a male frame in "cinnamon" skin, which is the color of Hero who is my trans male Genesis. I also got a random blank head (wish me luck it's also that skin color). I plan to give Hero a fully male body, then I will put a female chest back on his old body and give it the random head. Then I'll have two boys and two girls. I'm still working on a name and finding the right wig for my Kabuki, but once Hero gets his new body I'll try and get a group pic of my smart dolls. ^_^

    22. Got a Starlight head awhile back and put her on the body my DD head was borrowing. So this is Star. Not particularly original but it seems to suit her. She’s very … colorful.

    23. I think I won at chaos outlet :ablink: (Also please forgive my happy doll babble and longish story.)

So I have a Genesis version 1, that I made into a trans-boy. I named him Hero, and I've been trying to make male upper chest parts work on the female body with little luck. (The slim one almost works, but is very loose.)

Hero is my 2nd Smart Doll, and I've had him since they decommissioned his mold a while ago.
I got a still un-named Kabuki as noted a few posts back. She's lovely and my 3rd Smartdoll, and technically my first Smartdoll girl. (Even if Hero started on a girl bod.) and this brings us to Chaos my 4th smart doll second girl, and new owner of Hero's old body.

So as said I got the uncut boy kit and a boy frame, a blank head, some uncut hands and a random chest. I then did a budget wiggle and got a cinnamon painted head and oh boy glad I did. So today all that came I put together Hero's new body. Side note he has on female hands as down side of chaos his shell came with two male left hands and no right but everything else perfect.
Also today came that painted head, and it's lovely I'm 90% sure it's Athena in cinnamon skin, a doll I've only seen on the site in tea.
The face up is a 99% mach to Athena, and she came with the same blue eyes and a head cap. chaos outlet head do not normally have head caps or even eyes so extra win.

Here is a group pic of Hero, his sister Chaos, and his crush my nameless for now Kabuki.

Forgive the lighting my flash made it look odd but without the flash my room was too dark for photos today,

Oh and have a bonus bit of fan service from Chaos. (She got my random medium bust. and is so darn smirky about it.)

    26. though i've long wished for one, i don't envy the numerous issues that seem to come part-and-parcel with being an SMD owner these days.

also, compared to the chunkier OBITSU 26 body, - which stands as my personal solid-gold standard -
the SMD body comes off as altogether far too Willowy, (YMMV, of course)

      that said, the SMD nevertheless holds it's advantages;

    27. Hello everyone!:) I have a question for Smart Doll owners who bought directly from the Smart Doll website. Did you have any trouble ordering/receiving your doll? I've been eyeing Prowess Tea and Fortitude Tea for awhile. But with all the horror stories about Danny being "Overprotective" it has have made me a bit apprehensive to order anything from him especially since their so expensive. Thank you in advance.<3

      • x 3
    28. I've never had issues ordering from the Smart Doll site before.

    29. I've never had issues. The only time I have seen issues is when someone said something slightly negative on a forum and they managed to find their order and cancel it, or issues with payment method.

    30. @Scarlett Addams Like @nintendallie said...
There is a whole lot of don'ts... It's easier to do wrong than right in his world.
I don't think you'd have any trouble ordering as long as you keep quiet on social-media about your order, and/or it's contents, till the doll has arrived.
Just be wary if you are contacted by him, stating that there are issues with your order. Never give him info. on any platform other than through the mail you used to order with, and not unless he can provide you with your order-number first. He might try to trick you to out yourself, so he can ban/blacklist you otherwise.

    31. If you're nervous about buying direct then buy from Fabric Friends and Dolls.

    32. Hope he doesn't read Den of Angels then lol.:sweat Damn that's crazy! hate to hear those stories about him are true. I understand being passionate about your work but in my opinion that's taking it to another level. @Yumeiro Thank you! I'll make sure to remember if I decide to order anything from him.

    33. I think smart dolls community is pretty much ruled by Instagram, even the pages of the dolls feature owners....I dont think you have to take many photos to be part of the community there, just follow a lot of people?

    35. Did you order your doll? :D

If you haven't you shouldn't worry. I felt the same way after reading through the thread on the DD forum but I had no issues whatsoever when I ordered. In fact, it was the smoothest and FASTEST doll order I have made in all my years in this hobby. I got my shipping confirmation exactly the next day after I put my order and I got my doll like 4 days later. I was so utterly surprised! a nice surprise! I usually wait 4-6 months for a doll and sometimes even a year *coughsvolkscoughs*

Having a doll shipped the next day after ordering still amazes me. Kudos to Danny and his team!

Then when I got my doll I was so happy. Everything was perfect, the doll and the packaging. I love the bag they come with instead of the big boxes I usually get with BJDs and DDs, those boxes take a lot of space in my room. The face up was perfect, she was perfect! I have no complaints about quality. It was a zero-hassle experience.

Needless to say, I'm so happy I ordered from SmD even though I felt intimidated and afraid my order could be canceled because I got an email after I placed my order saying that someone from SmD was going to contact me to make me a few questions so I answered back saying that it was OK, I would do my best to answer as fast as I can! but I never got that email. I ordered at night, like around 11pm and the next day around 10am I got a shipping notification.

I will definitely order again, I'm dying for another girl but she is not a standard so I hope Danny releases her again and that I can catch her because none standard dolls sell really fast and when I go to order they're sold out! and for a boy...having a SmD boy doll is my dream.

Anyways, this is my girl. The face up she came with was beautiful and had no imperfections but it wasn't right for her character so I had to erase it. She makes me so happy, I'm so in love with her I want to buy only SmDs for now. :whee:

    36. @Jazijaz - I love your doll. L-O-V-E. She is breathtaking.

So I've spent some time on the DD forum myself, and I have read "the thread." And I have some concerns, I'll be honest.

However, SmD has also popped up in my YouTube feed, and I'm starting to watch some of his videos. Dude has a dry sense of humor. You could dry a load of towels with his sense of humor.

And I am just starting to wonder if sometimes - just sometimes - his statements are taken a little more literally than they are meant to be.

Not that it excuses what has happened - I wasn't there, and I have no right to comment on it. But some of his more recent social media posts ... let's just say I'm taking what he says with a much bigger grain of salt.

Or maybe I'm just rationalizing. I went from, "Meh. Not for me," to, "I really want one." Especially when I learned about the leg mobility joints you can get aftermarket.

    37. I haven't yet I'm waiting for Prowess to go back in stock. Strength has also caught my eye so it's been a bit of a battle deciding who to get.:XD: I'm happy to hear you had such such a nice experience ordering from Danny. Your girl is beautiful.<3

    41. The same thing happened to me too. I've been trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. As you said we don't know the full story. But I'll be honest hearing the stories about his reaction to someone getting a bad wig and to someone getting bad quality shoes gives me bad vibes. But then you hear stories about people having amazing experiences and getting signed bags and him following them on Instagram that I don't know what to think.:?

      • x 1
    42. Danny Choo has set expectations for his product and his company very clearly on his site which is more than I usually find any where. He can do whatever he wants with his business, I don't blame him for a low tolerance for busy bodies, naysayers, complainers, smearers, etc. The way I see it, he pretty much says he only wants happy customers.

I only have one product I didn't care for, but all the other goods override that. I suspect most buyers are the same, so I'm at least skeptical of the stories.

There is going to be a mixture of people - displeased, disappointed customers who go on their way (some begrudgingly) and those that pledge to the Smart Doll 'tribe'. Even so, for the latter one doesn't have to decide what Danny Choo is on a personal level. Two things can be true. We all have our appealing and annoying traits.

    43. Beautiful dolls!!

      Spicy Paquita is adorable!!

      • x 1
    44. Yeah, he can do whatever he wants. But he should be able to take the consequences of that too, without blowing up. Striving for happy customers is great, but no one can make everyone happy - it's not a realistic bar to set.
And outright claiming that his products aren't for disabled people, yet at the same time attempts to be inclusive by selling/giving out "disability-accessories", and prosthetics - I don't blame people for complaining, and not being too happy.......

      • x 3
    45. In his words:

"I give my condolences to consumers who at least tried to get us to change our business practices with a "Smart Doll can't take criticism" skid mark on the Internet - a sign of not only forfeit but acceptance that they want to have others create their future instead of trying to create their own.

Now here is the plot twist - the existence of such consumers is actually essential to our brand's growth. They help discourage like-minded folks from buying our products ;-)"

His take it or leave it stance is all over his page, realizing his products will make some people happy, and being fine with those who reject it. 'Reasons not to buy" are offered plenty. It seems to go with the philosophy of creating being an internal reward in itself, with external factors of less consequence.

If you could point me to a statement on SmD not being for disabled people, I'd appreciate it. This is a wildly generalized statement, which doesn't make sense as there are simple pleasures to being a doll owner. As a person myself who has a disability, sure there may be days when my hands don't work to change a wig or apparel, but that's for me to decide...

      • x 3
    46. I do not have the rant. Did someone here grab screens..?
The closest you are gonna get is this tame statement that was made after the fact:
"Most complains about the guys are the small size of the feet (they can wear our collection of shoes and boots), the shape of the thighs, the shape of the waist, the wobblyness of the chest and shins, the lack of Smart Doll apparel and the difficulty level of getting arms in socket - all great reasons not to buy this product"

    47. Ha! This is hyperbole IMO to relay difficulty level. Would I be told not to buy canned jars if I could not open it? Surely there might be someone who could help me (that's what my hubby and sons are for ;))

I'd love to see the rant!! Oh well...

      • x 1
    48. Of course.
He rarely posts those rants on the site (saved for the "stories"). But, like I said, it was added afterwards.

If he did not delete it because of the backlash, like he did with his BLM "statement". It's been a while...

    49. Did that person just call Danny Choo disingenuous, disgusting, an ableist, and a sadistic ill-wisher? (But people with motor control and hand disabilities need to go die in a fire?)

Hmm...I thought the issue was product usability/disclosure
      .

Looking forward to hearing his side.

    53. I've been trying to answer here many times and before I click "post reply" my browser restarts and deletes everything >_< it's probably because it was a long response and I responded to everyone individually too but just so it doesn't happen again I'll keep it short this time.

Thank you everyone who left comments about my doll<3 for those wondering, she is a Genesis in tea skin.

As for the issues with Danny, I just hope nobody here feels offended at me like it happened in the DD forum. I simply said nice things about him and this ticked some people off (which is why I avoid that part of the forum now). I just can't say negative things about him when my experiences with him and his company have been good so far and I can't give my opinion on those who had a bad experience since I'm not really well awared of what happened between the two parties.

I believe these issues should be kept private between Danny and the customer. I also believe that his words are taken literally more often than not. Danny uses a lot of sarcasm and hyperbole and what happened in the DD forum showed me that some people don't like it when others say nice things about Danny. My good experiences don't invalidate the ones who had a bad experience. I'm not trying to invalidate anyone but I also don't want to jump in the hate bandwagon for no reason.

All this hate towards him made me feel afraid of him and his company but I had nothing to worry about and I hope anyone who wants to order, can do it freely without fear and regret.

      • x 1
    54. Few hate Smartdoll/Danny for no reason... There will always be problematic people, of course. But most have reasons for their dislike (I don't think they outright hate though).
I do think it is important to inform those who are new, and ask about the company/ordering, to inform them that there are issues. Just like I wouldn't point anyone towards Dollshe atm, just because I've had good experiences with them in the past, or because I like the company, when they have these big problems.
Younger people especially don't always know that you are allowed to criticize something you like, without being a "hater". So just because people like Smartdolls, shouldn't mean they have to worship the ground Danny walks on and defend his actions. It's knowing the balance that people struggle with I'm afraid...

@Toxigenesis I've no experience with cutting vinyl, so I'd very much like to hear how it went! (Cutting the flash from body-parts seem easier than opening eyes..?)
AND what brand are those shoes?!:aeyepop:

      • x 2
    55. @Yumeiro

Oh man, cutting flash is so much easier than opening eyes! There's way more room for error than fiddly little eye holes, and if you make the slot parts a little rough it doesn't really matter because they're mostly hidden aside from the shoulder ones.

I had to pause for the night because my roommates went to bed hours earlier than usual so I can't rig up a heat box with my hair dryer for the thigh/hip assembly and the feet, but I got really far all together. Just gotta get those in and get some grease tomorrow for one of the elbows and the shoulders and he'll be all set aside from me skipping the back port--not sure if I'll bother adding that in. The 3 minute "artsy showcase" video of a doll being assembled on Danny's Youtube was super helpful. Hoping the weather holds up enough for me to maybe do a faceup on one of the Cortex heads I have, too. Super excited to get him all done!

    56. @Toxigenesis Thanks for the info.!
And be careful with the "back port"/socket! Especially if you are using super-super-glue...
      [IMG]*_*
(I was dumb enough to use the wrong glue, so the socket is stuck halfway in... But since it's used as a sewing mannequin, it works when measuring the size for the holes at least...)

    57. Quick question to you Smart Doll owners, I've been thinking about getting of these ladies and wanted to know if it was possible to get one with a different bust? Like, not just buy the optional bust and switch it later? Cause I really don't wanna have a pair of boobs I'm not gonna use sitting around. :/

      Thanks in advance!
