Do you have a Smart Doll? Pt.2

Sep 28, 2020

    1. I got some new hands for Jeye when he isn't all ghostly. Though they might look pretty funny when he is mostly 'invisible'. :whee:

    2. Well I tried to stay away from Smart Doll, but I gave in again and got me a Tea Athena. She came with the purple wig so I named her Lily. Between her and my Minifee I will go broke on clothes. So many cute outfits!

      • x 3
    3. Lots chatter on Facebook fan page about people getting the blue girl. I got email at 7pm but I am off line most days by 6.

    4. While I'm waiting patiently for Batgirl to be released I've been wondering how to order from Smart Doll. Do you just order from the Japanese site? Is it that easy?

      • x 1
    5. It's very easy but I will warn you use PayPal to pay for your order because some credit cards will react to a charge from Japan and your account could be frozen making for a major headache. Also try to get to free shipping with adding items until you hit 70000 yen.

    6. Oh yay! I'm glad it's easy! I always use pp, but thank you for the warning! I had that happen once when I tried to buy from Dollmore at a convention. It was routed through Korea and froze my card. Fun times!
      Thanks again! :)

    7. @animemom omg! Congrats on your Athena! She is one I hope to get as well, with the purple hair like you did! I also love tea fortitude and the semi real girl he teased recently that doesn’t have a name.

My first smartdoll is actually supposed to arrive today or tomorrow and I am so excited for her! Is it weird that I want to get all the CJ clothes? They are all so beautiful! My first girl is chitose multiverse in cinnamon. I love the tea version too! Gosh he makes it so hard to decide! Haha

    8. I timed it from the drop. Anime Singularity was sold out in roughly 10 minutes, and the blue pieces sold out one by one over the next two hours. The ears held on the longest, it was weird. I heard the FB groups were exploding during the drop, haha.

Congrats to everyone who scored pretty much anything from that madness!

In other news, I've uh... I've discovered that the Doll Delights tops meant for the bustier girls can fit the SmD Macho bust. Jun's wardrobe is about to get 100% more questionable.

      • x 2
    9. There's also a lot of whining going on too. I'm avoiding the SmD FB groups due to it. On the other hand I have somehow ended up with 5 SmD's

    10. @Angel_Star
I can only imagine, haha. The fallout must be incredible.

Oh yeah, they seem to be pretty addicting if my roomie having had six at one point is any indication. They've since been culled to three, but it's still a far cry from my singular one. On the upside for you, though, five means you have a lot you can do for photos and stuff right?

      • x 1
    11. After collecting BJD's I'm completely underwhelmed by Smart Doll, and I had to get one to find out. My anime one is cute, but I don't care for the semi-real, they just feel like Barbie territory to me now, super-sized, and I've never liked Barbies face haha.

I refuse to participate in flash sales! I'll go where I can preorder something.

      • x 1
    12. There are also US dealers I believe. Not sure about other countries.

      • x 1
    13. Congrats on your first Smart Doll. I didn't keep the past ones I bought as I just couldn't get the idea of having to take apart a doll just to put clothes on it. But I found TTYA as well as Elite Doll World and they make it affordable and not as pull apart dressing as the Smart Doll brand of stuff. Also my hands as well as other health issues have made me rethink future dolls here. So I am trying to embrace the Smart Doll as more permanent.

      • x 1
    14. Yes Fabric and Friends sell Smart Doll products and do layaway. They will even order a doll for you.

      • x 2
    15. I.. don't take a lot of photos. I kind of favor one or two.

      • x 1
    16. @Angel_Star

Oh, well that's okay! I don't take many either because all I have is a low quality phone camera. As long as just having the dolls makes you happy, it's all good!

      • x 1
    17. I want to... I just don't. Part of me wants to sell over 2 or 3 of them and the other part of me is all, but they are pretty don't do that.

      • x 2
    18. @Angel_Star

Hm. The tricky part about that is the tendency for sculpts to be discontinued as SmD evolves as a company, so if you regret it later there might not be any going back.

I've read elsewhere on this forum that what people do when they're not sure about selling is they box up the doll and put them out of sight for a good long while to see if they're missed. Maybe that would be worth a shot?

      • x 1
    19. As someone who spent months of dedicated searching trying to get a discontinued girl I will say, if you've any doubts about selling, it's probably better to hold on to them. I finally managed to get her head (and thankfully it didn't cost me scalper's prices) but I lost count of how many "got away" because of how fierce the competition is. Things move a lot faster in the SmD world than in the BJD world o_o;

    20. @Toxigenesis and @BabySnow
Two were impulse buys sooo and one was a rescue. I regret rescuing him as he was worse than I thought and I'll never be able to fix him up as he should be.

      • x 1
    21. @Angel_Star
Oh boy, I have a little experience in the rescuing realm too. What all happened to him?

    23. Bad staining on his torso, arms, and face.. a little on his lega, his upper left arm shell does not fit the skelly right and won't stay in regardless of what I do..

      It's bad.

      • x 1
    24. Just ordered #2 last night and she's on her way. Tea Strength. Yeah!

      • x 4
    25. @Angel_Star

Oh man, yeah vinyl is so stain prone that I'm super hyper aware of whatever Jun comes into contact with. He's not allowed to sit on anything that's dyed and only wears white, and I check him weekly just in case too. Might be a little much, but hoo boy.

      What sculpt is he?

      • x 1
    26. they said that it all came from a shirt... but... i uh yeah... -_- poor boy. He's a Tan Crimson in the macho body. I have 2 other tans and 2 cinnamon and never have i had to worry about staining with them.

@animemom So excited about your Strength! My Reflection should be here Monday. I can't believe i snagged her, she was just discontinued.
@TomB Love the black and white on your girl, especially the wig.

      • x 4
    28. @Angel_Star

Oh wow, yeah I can see it all over his forehead and cap. Poor guy. Are stain treatments not working on him?

Everyone is so cute though! And you're another Gemini owner, how about that. I honestly wonder how many of us there even are considering how weird his uh... "release" was (can you even really call it that?)

I got mine through FF&D :sweat

    30. @BabySnow

Woo! It's nice you didn't have to do anything too crazy to get ahold of him. Those He Pebble drops were brutal. I... think I follow you on IG, actually. Been making a point to follow everyone who uses his tag out of curiosity. My vinyl handle is Zippercore.

      • x 1
    31. @Toxigenesis Oh, I'll have to look for you! But oh my gosh, yeah, the pebbles were so brutal. Always dropped while I was in bed or at work. I managed to get my Gemini after FF&D announced a small amount of stock in their IG stories one day. Poor guy hasn't gotten much camera time, but his stuff isn't all together yet. His wig is in a big Luts order I placed back in January that hasn't shipped yet, and wigs can really make a character, y'know? Maybe I should take more pictures of the other boys in the meanwhile ^^;

      • x 1
    32. @BabySnow

Yeah, I was up from like 9pm-9am for a couple weeks there waiting for them. I think I used up all of my luck for the rest of my lifetime on him. Worth it.

Wigs are a huuuge part of that, you're right. Especially with SmD where it's common to stick to the factory faceup so every doll otherwise looks exactly the same. Gotta differentiate between everyone somehow!

What wig did you choose for him? And are you planning on keeping his default eyes? I was going to change Jun's, but they grew on me and any other color doesn't suit his wig quite right.

      • x 1
    33. @Toxigenesis I pulled an all-nighter for a doll exactly once (Sakura Miku DD) and have decided, no regrets but never again, lol.

I picked up a short, dark blue wig. I'm basing him off of the character Haruka Nanase from the Free! series. The first time I saw a Smart Doll boy, original Eiji, he reminded me so much of Haru that I couldn't get the idea out of my head. Gemini made me think of Haru even more. He's currently in some 14mm acrylic eyes (I find the Gemini defaults a little off-putting for some reason) but I'm looking around for some nicer glass ones, or artist ones.

Most of my Smarties are in other wigs/eyes by now, but I do still keep my original Chitose in her defaults. She was my first and I just fell so hard for her default look ^^

      • x 2
    34. @BabySnow
Ah, gotcha. So what you're saying is he's gonna have a collection of form fitting swimwear in his future...~

That's fair. The original Chitose was super cute, it's a shame she was discontinued. She seemed pretty popular.

      • x 2
    35. You say that like I've done stain treatment. I haven't, I've debated getting rid of him.

Yeah I own a Gemini but tbh I hate the semi real look.

      • x 2
    36. @Angel_Star

Ah well, if he's not making you happy then I guess it's for the best.

I kinda felt the same about the G01 sculpt at first, but he's really grown on me. It's not for everybody though, which would probably explain why both it and the G02 sculpts were phased out.

I take it Luna and Suri are the ones you favor? They're very pretty. I love the little Minnie Mouse band! I have a red bow version and a little Mickey Mouse hat floating around somewhere... actually, I think the one I have matches Jun's eyes. I should try to take him to WDW sometime.

      • x 1
    37. I'm very picky, but his issues are making it hard for me to bond with him. Kind of makes me sad but it is what it is. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say G01, G02 etc... Never got into all that or what ever you call it.

Luna is mine and Suri belongs to my other half but he will tell you that she's really mine LOL. Haruka is cute but she was an impulse buy so I dont know fully what I am going to do about her.

      • x 1
    38. @Angel_Star

The sculpt name is on the back of the semireal heads. Gemini's head says G01, Entropy/Genesis/Nostalgia/basically all of the original semireal girls say G02. I'm not sure about the others because I've never seen them IRL.

Suri gets lots of attention either way so that's good! And man, everybody went nuts when Haruka was released huh? She's super cute too.

      • x 1
    39. I dont pay attention to that suff... never actually looked at the back of his head. Might have to now though. Suri ( moment) is the same sculpt as Luna ( Destiny) but they dont look the same which is nice however they clearly look like they could be siblings.

I dont know if they did or not, kind of off in my own world. Sounds bad I know but it's better that way.. granted I can admit i've spent way too much money in this hobby XD

      • x 1
    40. @Angel_Star

Ah. Maybe I look too closely into things.

Moment and Destiny are both the F6 sculpt, and they share that with Kanata, Kizuna, Chitose Alternate, and a bunch of others. It's a very versatile face; I have a couple of blank ones myself that I've been playing around with faceups on.

I only say nuts because she sold out super fast. The majority of the community seems to be on Facebook and I, uh... I'm not. It's okay though, perfectly good to just enjoy the dolls on your own.

      • x 1
    41. @Toxigenesis

I have no idea about any of the sculpt numbers. That aside I've pondered getting a moment in blue but i dont know if I want to... just because I already have 5 and I don't need another one even if i want one. Hubby has no idea how much I've already spent. HE asked once but I told him I had to math because I didn't know off the top of my head. He hasn't asked since ( thankfully).

I get your point, the Haruka I have was the last one that Iris got in and I got lucky enough to get her though regret the impulse buying >.> I have got to stop doing that, with dolls, wigs, and clothing

      • x 1
    42. @Angel_Star

I think the numbers of the anime faces, which are F1 through F6, might be a community-made naming scheme. The semireals have been right from Danny, though. He mentions them frequently on his Instagram, and we're already to G07. They're really going all in on that aesthetic right now. I guess there's only so much you can do with the anime sculpts.

Oh boy, that's rough. This hobby is super expensive for sure, especially when you get to things like SmD. I've been trying to make my own clothes for Jun to offset the costs and it's been an adventure.

      • x 1
    43. I can't sew to save my life but 5hey have a decent wardrobe. Girls have a lot more than the boys though.

      • x 1
    44. @Angel_Star

That makes sense, it's generally easier to find clothes for the girls. Most of the SmD seamsters/seamstresses focus on them exclusively. I can only think of a couple who make stuff for the guys, really.

... That's not to say that the "girl" clothing won't fit, of course.

      • x 8
    45. @Toxigenesis I'd never put my by's in girls clothing... macho boys dont really fit in them anyways. I tried to use Luna's track suit for Gemini when he came in and it didnt work.. Poor boy looked like an 80's gym rat and not in the good way.

      • x 2
    46. @Angel_Star

Ah, to each their own. I'm very fond of the SmD guy sculpting, so form-fitting clothes are very appealing to me, at least as an under layer. Jun will eventually have a much looser, open jacket too once I can sort out these snaps and the collar.

Oh, you know I think I've run across you on IG before. Your handle is doll.bound, right? I remember you using that phrasing about Gemini's body before while browsing his tag during the sporadic "releases". I remember a lot of things that amuse me when I'm laser focused on an interest. That's not creepy, right? :sweat

      • x 1
    47. @Toxigenesis I dont put down people that do dress their boys in girl clothing. It's not not something I do, but seriously good luck sorting that out. All dolls should have a nice set of clothing that makes them and their owners happy.

Yup that would be me XD Gemini hasnt gotten a lot of love on IG. I should take more pictures but he needs pants that fit the ones he is wearing are for an 80Cm boy and i'm just really good and folding and stuff... no not creepy, I have been known to say memorable things.

      • x 1
    48. @Angel_Star

Whoa whoa, for an 80cm? That's an impressive amount of folding. Honestly I just ordered SD13 sized jeans off of an Etsy seller for mine. They're a little loose (and make for some interesting shots when you get a top-down view of him) but suit the SmD guy pretty well. There's always TTYA, too. Super super nice clothes, though the price is pretty close to a human-sized garment. Fabric Friends has a selection here for that delicious instant gratification (as opposed to me waiting a couple months for my order).

You know, if you're not fond of the semireal sculpts, you could probably look around for a Chaos head to repaint/have repainted with a more boyish look. That way you can keep the coveted male body and you might bond better with him if he's more proper anime?

      • x 2
    49. might jsut steal the CJ jeans off Crimson but he has been so abused i wanted him to have something nice to wear. That said I've thought about doing that but I just do not know, i've seen some great paint jobs on chaos heads but I'm super freaking picky... *shrugs*

    50. I am so happy I found a male chest part in cinnamon in the chaos outlet last night, so a bit of modding/Jimmy rigging and Hero's body will be perfect. Hero is what I named my V.1 Genesis, he is a trans-male. My Smart Doll boys need some love, I should try to take some photos of Hero and Haruka (My V.1 Eiji named for my fav Sailor Scout.)

I really wish I could have gotten a Gemini, I love the semi real looking dolls, and am sad I missed the lone male.

      • x 2
    51. I got lucky with boy pants- between the two Geass boys' uniforms and the pair of jeans I have, I actually have enough pants for them all. And thankfully black slacks work for the ones wearing them XD But Haru does need some nice swimsuits, when I feel like wrestling stretch fabric again.

Oh, maybe y'all can give me advice? Chai, my tea Prowess, has one of the cat ear headbands, but over time it's gotten loose to the point that it just falls right off her head now. Any idea how to put it back into shape without breaking it?

      • x 1
    52. @Tippetarius

Someone in the vinyl server I'm in experimented and found that the Macho bust sits alright on the girl torso, so Hero should work out okay I think. Might be a little odd nude, but clothed I figure should be fine? It's just that the shoulder holes are massive compared to the girl arms, really.

      @BabySnow

Is it made of resin? I wasn't familiar with this accessory so I had to look it up on the SmD site and the description says it is, but I dunno if it's true. If so, though, I wonder if boiling it might make it more malleable, like how you can boil resin hands to gently modify poses.

      • x 1
    53. I'm worried about boiling it because it's painted *_*

      • x 1
    54. @BabySnow

Oof yeah that's... probably not a good idea then. It's so weird that it lost its shape though. I wonder if it's possible to email their support to ask about it? They were helpful when my roomie had to ask about how to salvage Kizuna and stuff.

      • x 2
    55. @BabySnow Maybe a bit of low heat from a hair dryer like one does for resetting vinyl? But I'm not sure as you said the part is painted. So I second Toxigenesis about trying to contact support before trying anything else.

      • x 2
    56. I thought someone on this thread asked "what happened to the cards they put inside the Smart Dolls to show their were inspected?" I discovered in my newest one they have been replaced with stickers on the skeleton. I only noticed because I switched mine from a default bust to the medium.

      • x 1

    57. Maybe use a hair dryer and apply heat before reshaping it to the head? I mean it's what they have you do with the vinyl shells to get them on over the skelly. Just a thought..

      • x 1
    58. Lol, I see dislike for the semireal G04, and here I am thinking, "Oh cool, they have nostrils now!" Then again, I like Barbie, so ...

My biggest reason for not getting one is the staining issue. I know with cheap old Barbie, a little Benzoyl peroxide face wash will clear up stains, but what do you use on a Smart Doll? Are stains even possible to remove?

      • x 1
    59. @MaleficentMrsofEvil

Yes, the same methods for other vinyl dolls seem to work for SmD too. Benzoyl peroxide cream and a halogen lamp. Results can vary, though. I bought what looked to be a terribly stained XS bust from someone only for it to clear right up with a single treatment, likely because it was relatively new, meanwhile roomie's poor Kizuna has had multiple treatments with little to no success because there was a good chance she'd had the stains for years.

      • x 2
    60. I recently got a chance to go to the Fabric Friends Dollstore in person and ended up buying a cinnamon Chitose and the apocalyptic uniform. I also swapped the purple wig for some red/brown waves. I wasn't sure id be into vinyl but im really liking her. :D
