I never has a SD size, but had (and still have) MSD and under. I must admit yosd and pukifee size are my favorite for the moment.
I am a fairly small person, so I prefer smaller dolls. Sometimes I even have a hard time handling my MSD, so I can't imagine a larger doll. Though, I am tempted to get an SD for the increased clothing/design options and detail.
If you do (do iiiiiiit), I recommend a 58-cm doll like Angel of Dream, Volks Super Dollfie SD, Iplehouse nYID, or Fairyland Feeple60. That's the most common "SD" or 1/3 scale size, and you'll find the widest variety of clothing and patterns. they aren't really that much bigger, but they're so addictive...
I used to prefer 1/3 scale, and I still love them, and I think it's because I just really love big dolls. I legit think it's related to the fact that as a kid I wanted one of those huge barbies but never got one. XD But now, I actually think I overall prefer 1/4, probably because they're just more practical in terms of size and weight.
Thanks, haha! The main reason I would get a larger doll would be to shell a specific character, and his face would be VERY difficult to find a sculpt for. I have a couple of maybes, but they're still only maybes.
My favorite size is MSD. As others have pointed out, it is comfortable to handle. Many independent artists and companies make clothes and accessories for MSD. These dolls are not too big, so they only take up a little storage space. At the same time, I have a soft spot for SD, YOSD, and half-scale dolls.
Over the years in the hobby I have had many dolls that I sold because they were not the right size. And realized that my favorite size is standard msd.
I have always loved the big guys over 65cm best. Recently I have been doing more with my smaller dolls though as I injured myself and could not lift my big boys. I still prefer the larger ones though.
My favorite once is 1/4 as just the thought of I could easily store them better and can handle them more easily I've never bought nor had a 1/3 or any bigger size of them and guessed it will be harder and of course heavier on handling them as well as especially to where to place them not unless if I were to build another room storage solely for those sizes.
I love all sizes, and own just about every size right now. Each has their pros/cons: Tinies/Yo-SD — fits in a purse, easy to store somewhere… but also easy to lose. Obitsu feet are magnetized so my tiny can stand on the edge of a knife, and in an espresso cup. But they’re so small you really need a good place to keep them safe. MSD - More ‘doll-like’ than a tiny. Easier to transport, and a lot of clothes options are available. Most people at cons/meets will bring these dolls due to size/weight. There are also more mature MSD and child-like MSD. SD/60cm - BIG DOLL! SO COOL! I love big dolls. The larger the better, imo. But with size comes weight issues. They can be awkward to hold for long periods. And sometimes moving them around is kind of clunky SD/70cm+ — HOOOOLY CRAP. I love this size, but they are awkwardly heavy. It’s like holding a baby, but he’s a lil man. 70cm males butts DO NOT fit pants well, and clothes for them are incredibly difficult to find.
i really like MSD. They are not too big and they don't take up much space. It is very practical to me, but i have now my first SD and its not bad too
When I ordered my 1/4 I had doubts if I'd like her, but it turns out I love that size too! She's much more toy-like than SD (in a good way) while still large and heavy enough to feel like a proper doll. I'm tempted to stick her in a backpack and take her around. I don't have larger dolls than SD (yet) but I believe SD is the sweet spot. It's big but not big to the point where size or weight start affecting the posing and they do not need engineering quirks like ratchets or multiple shelves - just good old string tension and maybe sueding.
I only have 1 doll (so far) and she's 1/3 scale. But I feel like she's a little too large for me? ^^' After seeing photo comparisons and some dolls in person, I know I want my next one to be 1/4 scale. I might change my mind after owning one but for now I think that's the ideal size!
Although I wander into the territories of msd and sd sized dolls every now and again my preferences lie in tinies between 1/8 - 1/6 size. I do have a couple smaller (a Pukipuki, Tinybear/Sleeping Elf ‘Moona’ and fat fairies’Bonbon’ and ‘Coco’) but I feel more comfortable with Pukifee, Realfee and 1/6 size.
MSD sized dolls (up to 58cm, but that's already SD, I think) are best for me. I do kind of want a Dollmore Lusion (79cm?), but fear that I'll regret it.
when I started the hobby I liked SD girls and boys, later I prefered MSD but now I'm in love with huge dolls such as Dollmore Lusion or Trinity.
I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately! I've got a couple of the tinies (1/12, and 1/6). I love how portable they are, and how cute they tend to be. I also have a couple of 1/4 size dolls, and I think they're probably the biggest I want to go. I don't have a ton of space, so smaller is probably better for my sanity.
I've had from 70cm on down over the years, although my fav large size is still in the 58-62cm range. That said, as I age (and deal with medical impacts to strength and stability), I'm finding that some beauteous large dolls now are just too heavy for me to haul around or handle comfortably, and my preference is shifting to mini size. Except for a couple of large doll brands that have always had more lightweight bodies than other brands.
I collect various sizes and love them all BUT I recently got a pukipuki in the mail and Im totally smitten. The size is adorable and I love it more than I imagined, now I want them all Tinies have taken over this year!
I only own 1/3 dolls ranging from 55 to 75 I'd say? I tend to like more mature looks that's probably why I tend to buy 1/3 as most 1/4 are a bit too cute for my taste. I also love how intricate and detailled the bigger dolls are in terms of clothing, accessories and such it's definetly something that pushes me in their direction!
I own one boy that is 1/3, he is my only and first doll. It has been 10 years since I got him, and I now plan to get into things more seriously as I am older and have more funds for the hobby - I definitely want to go for MSD only, at max 52cm for some really big male dolls. The one I have is just really tall and I think I'd have an easier time displaying the 1/4 ones. Not to mention the price different cx The only downside to 1/4 I have seen is more limited choices for mature men...
You're in luck because mature 1/4 are becoming a thing, as far as I know. The old-fashioned dolls with a bigger head and more stylized proportions have faded considerably.
I started with MSD, and I've now come full circle and I'm once again concentrating on my MSD-size dolls. I finally ordered a Resinsoul doll I've wanted to buy for at least a decade now. I'm not sure I have a favourite size, though. My smallest fully jointed BJD is DHS Pocca, and the largest is a 70 cm Resinsoul Yi.
i have a lot of different size doll. but im doing most with my MSD.. they are not too small and not too big, be it carrying around or dress up, they just are the easiest to handle in my collektion. I could see my collection go in that direction, to only own MSD or most of my doll being MSD.
With my tallest doll being a 1/3 and the smallest I have went so far being 1/6 and having 1/4ths as well. My favorite size dolls that to be 1/6 because the abundance and affordability of clothes/shoes for them. I love my other dolls they just not as portable and thrifty.
I have varies size of BJD. I do found I love hugging my SD and my MSD is more suitable stand or sitting on my desk while enjoying their company.
Hmmm...that's an interesting point. I have one SD size doll, and I was going to say she's probably my favorite size. However, after thinking about your comment I have to say my 1/4 and 1/6 are much better for my wallet. Since I can afford more accessories and clothing for them, they do get handled more as well. So while I like the look/feel of SD I think 1/6-1/4 suits my situation best.
I used to like SD sized dolls the most, but lately I've discovered that most of my favourite dolls have been MSD sized.
Definitely 1/3 size is my favorite. I've owned tinies, msds, sds, and sd13. And 1/3 is ideal for me in terms of finding clothing, being easy to photograph in terms of scale and poseability, and it's such a nice size for me to hold. I might own tinies again in the future just for fun (I like the idea of a tiny on the go for spontaneous silly photos) but 1/3 is my favorite size and always will be.
I eventually got into 70cm (DT 18 girl) after writing this, and I still believe SD is the "perfect' size, because it's the right compromise - hefty but not heavy, big enough to have presence but small enough to hold poses and handle nicely - but I love that extra step in size so much. I'll probably stay in the 65-70 range and I'm seriously thinking of getting a way larger doll as a finisher, like a Conarium.
My boys are all MSDs and YOSDs! The MSDs are my favorite overall since it's MUCH easier to find clothes/accessories for them that aren't meant to look like children's clothes/accessories (major issue w/ the YOSDs). They def don't have as many clothing/accessory/wig options as SDs, but that seems to be improving over time. I do actually have one SD, but he's just lying in a box waiting to be sold. I got him around a year ago and just never bonded with him. Felt too big for me . . . I love teeny tiny things too much. I think he could be super adorable with a new faceup and wig, and I could probably create a version of him I could really love. But the thing is . . . I wouldn't want more SDs, so he'd just be sitting around being a loner while my little MSDs and YOSDs are all cuddled up together and cozy in their little groups. I'd feel bad for him lmfao; he'd just be like the last creature of his kind eternally roaming the earth alone )': Hopefully he'll go to a home with some fellow SDs!
I splurged on a lot of MSDs only to later realize I prefer the big dolls. I read a lot of webtoons so my overall 75CM dolls aesthetics leans a bit more towards the "serious, cold looking male lead" type of look that'd you see in KR webtoons or CN manhuas or novels, and I really like that. I like the idea of creating OCs to bring my story ideas to life, so the 1/3+ sized dolls definitely help and work as a guide.
