I had an MSD sized bjd when I started the hobby, but now I only have Tinies (1/8 and smaller). I have smaller than average hands for a girl so just handling and cuddling my minifee was difficult, but now I can easily and comfortably hold my Tinies while one handed Tell me what size bjds you prefer and why!
i like 1/4 scale dolls personally. I'm not very strong and I find 1/4th dolls (especially minifees!) to be light enough for me to redress and customize easily. I'm afraid of tinies because I tend to lose things so I'd be terrified of a tiny getting lost.
I really like 1/4! SDs are a nice size and I would love to have at least one some day, but since I don't have a lot of space where I live, msd is the perfect size for me! big enough to hold and play with how I like, and small enough to not take up too much room.
1/3 scale, and I try to keep the bulk of the collection to 65cm and under. I’ve had all sizes over the years, but nothing else has that same presence for me as the big guys! (Sometimes I wish it was different since the littler ones are so much easier to store, but I always see them as accessories to the big ones.) Edit 4yrs later: I’ve recently started moving back into Minifee (1/4 scale) dolls and mature 1/6 dolls instead, because I find them so much easier to transport and pose for photography. I found myself struggling to lug the big guys around and find suitable backdrops, and a smaller doll can take great photos with a lot less effort, so I take back everything 2021 me said.
I have a large range of sizes but I think I prefer the SD16/17 size, followed by SD13/10 size, and then MSD. The type of clothes I like for my dolls comes in all these sizes. I find my SDs easiers to dress and style but the MSDs are easier to carry to a photoshoot that's far from home.
I feel like I might have already posted on a very similar thread before, but then again, my brain fails half the time (or more, I'm an insomniac!). I have always preferred 1:6, but I mean actual 1:6 scale figures (or dolls, but that's rare) and not 30-cm chubby babies, and I mean humanoid-proportioned doll or figures that are actually six times smaller than a real-person. I don't usually collect child dolls, so the thought of "six-foot-tall-babies" is not really appealing to me (if any 30-cm baby was actually 1:6). I also collect 12" fashion dolls (like mass-produced Barbie), so I would prefer that all my dolls be either 1:6, or under 12" in height, with realistic proportions, and mature looking vs. child-faces with mature bodies. Having sad that, when I first learned about these dolls, there were no mature minis, let alone mature tiny-dolls -- and none where realistically proportioned by any stretch of the imagination. So, most of my small group of this kind of dolls are larger than 43cm, but I would ideally have preferred if all where under 15" tall, or actual 1:6 mature looking dolls. Actual scales under 1:6 are too small for me, although I have gotten a few (how many times can I say) actual 1:12 action figures and models in the past few years. However, I haven't unboxed those yet, but I know I'll lose a pair of hands or feet any minute, so I keep hesitating and that's why I don't like smaller sized dolls/figures than 1:6. (:
I like 1/3-- from 53cm to 65cm. I find it's is a good size to handle, not too hard to sew for, easiest to faceup. Anything smaller just doesn't have the weight I like, and doesn't feel as...impressive? to me. Like the size is just too similar to play line dolls for me. I don't mean any of this as an insult to anybody else's dolls, I enjoy seeing dolls of all sizes, but I think 1/3 is the only size for me personally.
The first dolls I collected were mostly 60 to 62cm SDs. I LOVE that size because they feel good to hold in my arms. The clothing and shoes seem easier to find also. My very favorite doll i still my first doll. An SD Tumnus from 5 Star Doll. Every time I look at him, I get all warm and fuzzy inside. The last couple of years I have branched out to collecting Minifees. I love them because the sculpts are just so beautiful and whimsical. I have other MSDs too, and love them all, but shoes are so hard to find for slim MSDs. They are always too darn big. I hate paying more for doll shoes than I would for my own shoes, only to discover that they are too big for any of my dolls.
I definitely prefer slim MSDs. I’ve tried chunkier regular MSDs and a small SD (Feeple60) and I just do not like them at all. They were too much for me. I also really love all the modern clothing options in slim MSD/Minifee size, and really like that most of my dolls can share clothes. I also have a couple of child yoSD sized dolls, but 9 times out of 10, I’m wanting another slim mini.
I have a lot of sizes from 80cm Lusion right down through to tiny little RealPuki, but it's SD size I have most of - they're a nice size to handle and play with and are my favourite size to sew for because it's easier to find fabric in the right drape/thicknesses, patterned in scale with the doll, and small enough trim and fastenings to work for them. Teddy
I personally like 30-40cm, but I feel like I am a bit of an out layer. I would never, even if it was perfect in every other way. I would never buy a doll bigger then that.
I love all the various sizes and have most of them in my collection, but if I had to choose an absolute favorite it would be MSD. I began collecting with the idea of creating beautiful displays for my dolls right from the beginning. I soon discovered that MSD size worked best within the dimensions of my display spaces, so that’s what I began to collect. There is great diversity among dolls and companies in that size which also appealed to me. Eventually, over the years, I’d find unique nooks and crannies to fit in a new doll display, and that’s when I started adding other sizes (from super tiny Realpuki to 65cm.) But by far, the bulk of my collection is mostly MSD size.
I have two favorite sizes… slim minis and littlefee sized dolls. I love my much smaller and larger dolls but I’m always ridiculously tempted by my favorite sizes. They are too cute. I kind of think I’ve hit my dolly limit though. I have to really be careful about adding more.
I started off with a 1/4 scale bjd, and collected off-topic dolls that fit somewhere between 1/6-1/4 scale. Currently, with exceptions—I mainly collect 1/3 scale, especially 63-72cm in scale. I prefer more mature sculpts, and the majority of mature bjds are in that 63cm and above range. I have a couple 1/4 MSDs, yes—but they're kind of the oddballs in my collection. Tinies feel too tiny for me (they seem so fragile, plus the majority are very baby/toddler like, which isn't my cup of tea), a majority of 1/4 MSDs are child-like (not something I'm into), and the ones that are mature feel like glorified action figures to me. I can create stronger, more realistic details in 1/3 SD+ sculpts, whereas mature minis are limited. Yes—some people have managed to make 1/4 mature minis look fairly realistic, but oftentimes it looks better from a distance instead of close-up. You can get more realistic up close details that you just can't with their smaller counterparts. I make exceptions for smaller sizes when it comes to animal based bjds (cats, for instance—I'd be fine with 1/4 and smaller for cat MSDs), but, for the most part—1/3 is the only size for me.
I looooove 1/3 scale BJDs. Their size, their weight! They are definitely harder to store and harder to carry around but boy they are worth it to me. I totally understand why some people prefer smaller but bigger is better for me. It's probably best I don't see a dollmore trinity or lusion in real life. I'm afraid I'll start to find my 1/3rd size dolls to be insignificant. I'd probably just go insane if I found a 1/1 BJD. Not that I'd be able to pick it up but I'd have so much fun being able to use my clothes, wigs, and shoes. I wouldn't be surprised if variations on this question have been asked a few times. Are you thinking of this thread?
I feel most comfortable with 1/4 dolls. Not too big, so they don't take up much space. Not too small, so I don't feel like I'm going to break the doll so easily. Their clothing also tends to be just a bit cheaper than most 1/3 options, too. However, my favorite doll is a yosd size (Miss Kitty, Dollzone). I have such a hard time handling her, I wish she were a 1/4.
i have a couple of MSDs i love and am very fond of of smaller 20-30 cm dolls my absolute favourite are large SDs the 65-75cm range, i find them easier to paint, more solid and present and the amount of variety you can get, i just wish it was easier finding clothes for larger ladies lol
This is a good prompt, and always interesting to learn how others made this decision for themselves. This is similar to what sort of vehicle someone might prefer because everyone's preferences and circumstances are different and often change. For me having a preferred size, it's yes and no. I did in the beginning. I started with a 68cm Popodoll guy. I had a hard time getting my first BJD as the initial attempt was a horrible disaster that left me so sad and disappointed. For that reason, my very first doll was the most-planned and well thought-out of any doll I own. At the time, my son was still very young and wanted Ken dolls. I bought him the first Kens that were under the Fashionista line. They were the wonderful articulated ones before the numbered diversity themed Fashionistas. They were a lot of fun and I really enjoyed finding little outfits online to help him dress them up as he wanted to do. I was already aware of BJDs since I came across them online searching for a small doll to put in the kit dollhouse I had been building. For many years I kept 'watching' a doll on eBay, which was my Popo doll. I really liked to look at the promo photos for him, and wish I had thought to save them. After a few years our family financial situation had improved a great deal. I had never in my entire life make such an expensive purchase for myself just for pleasure. When I did have the money, I took a lot of time to think over the decision. I did not want a small doll because I did not want it to feel like a child's toy. I wanted something that was completely different than any of the dolls I had ever owned before in childhood (I had A LOT of dolls as a child). When he came home, I was absolutely thrilled and thought he was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen in my entire life (still do) and I really love him. So, I really liked the large sized dolls. Once he was ordered, I remembered joining this forum some years before and became an active user. Although I had looked at many dolls when I was making the decision to buy my Popodoll, I had not seen many owner photos before. I think the best photos of the dolls are the ones in the marketplace ads. It was fun to look at all of them and see so many, and especially what they looked like when they were not styled in company ads. Eventually I bought my guy a 18M Dollshe friend, then a tiny because it was so unique and adorable, then a few more.... but I only had SD and tinies for a long time. My son became older and was ready to be able to handle having his own BJD, he choose YOSD and soon after MSD too. I liked the size of those too. An MSD feels the same to me in my adult hands as a Barbie did in my child-sized hands. They were fun to hold and to see, but I resisted for a long time. I have 2 MSDs at home now, and another should arrive any day. If it was down to just size, I can't really pick a favorite. They all have pros and cons. Bigger dolls are more solid feeling and easier to make detailed clothes. Tinies and teeny-tinies take up a very small space and can be transported easily. MSDs are in the middle, but probably the easiest to display standing. My entire collection of dolls, not being just BJDs include sizes from the tip of my small finger, to life-size and standing taller than me. I like variety, but I also like everyone to have at least one friend in their scale. I think a collector is a little more likely to enjoy all of the sizes where someone that's more of a hobbyist will like to keep their crew in the same scale. It also depends on what sort of space you have and budget. If I was lucky enough as a student to own a BJD, I would have preferred to have nothing bigger than a MSD due to frequent moves and possibly needing to conceal valuables at any given moment. I live in a childless house now, we seldom have company. There's a lot more space that is secure so the size factor is not that important anymore. If/when I become old and need to live in a nursing home, I would definitely have to pick a favorite size again.
I wouldn't be surprised either, a lot of threads don't get merged right away now, when the topic is similar or exactly the same. I'm sure I've posted on at least one other, because I tend to over-explain about "proper" scaled dolls, and it's kind of déjà vu for me at this point. Lol! That wasn't the thread I was recalling though, I didn't post on that one, but I'm pretty sure I did post somewhere else, before this one popped up. (:
1/3, between 55 and 67 cm (more or less, haha). That said, I never had any other size, but I tend to think 1/6 = more or less a Barbie and 1/4 = more or less a slimmer American girl and I saw both of those in stores, so I can have an idea. There also was a very useful thread that helped me a lot when I was hesitating. Size Comparison Article Discussion | Den of Angels That said, after having read that thread, I was convinced I wanted a 1/6 size. Easy to store! Possibly fitting clothes from other fashion dolls! Diorama and furniture possible because of the scale! Pretty much everything could be less expensive! Buuuuut...the first sculpt I really loved and wanted was 57 cm, so I got her. And after getting her, I do think that sewing for the 1/3 size is easier and more rewarding (because you can fit in so much more details, at least for a beginner). The sculpt are so detailed too. And they have so much presence! After getting my current 57-59 cm crew, I don't really close the door to the possibility of ever owning a 1/6 for the dollhouse factor (if I ever get enough place AND if I ever find the right doll to make me take the jump, now that the current 1/3 take quite a lot). I think that, depending on the crafts that you prefer, some sizes may be preferable.
I'm often a little sad because it seems like the big boys aren't as popular as the rest, but I can understand that people may find them hard to handle. My first doll is a 75cm Idealian and I dont plan on ever buying any smaller ones. It was because I was so attracted to the 75cm doll lines that I bought my first doll, actually. They're so big and impressive. Sure, he's a little heavy but I love to dress him and give him cuddles. He feels so sturdy and strong to me.^^ I have another 75cm on order but I don't think I will ever buy anything smaller.
Oh! Whoopsie :O I didnt see a thread about favorite sizes so Im sorry if this is indeed a repeat ^^" I just wanted to see what everyone liked, I wasnt expecting so many responses but I've loved reading them so far!
I currently own bjds from approximately 5 cm up to 65 cm and all of them have things that I love about them to where I can't pick favorites when it comes to size even though my favorite two dolls that I gravitate to for that 'comfort'factor are roughly 14/15 cm and around 45 cm. So one of those might count as a favorite sise. *shrug*
{shrug} Sometimes it happens - if it really is a repeat of another thread, the mods will probably just merge the two threads. Teddy
57-65cm 1/3-scale... The classic SD-to-SD17 sizes, basically. While I have both larger and smaller dolls in my crew, the majority of the gang are in that range, and it's the size I'm most comfortable with. Bigger dolls start to get too heavy and awkward to handle easily and smaller ones are a pain to dress and sew for.
Most of my dolls are 1/6 mature tinies, as I find that size easy to handle and make clothes for. But I fairly recently acquired three slim minis who I absolutely adore. They are so much more substantial than a tiny doll. I'm planning to sell a few of my tinies and get more fantasy minis. Though I think of them as my big dolls, since they're the biggest BJDs I have and the size of an SD is pretty intimidating to me. So I guess my slim MSDs are my favorite with the mature tinies a close second.
I like all sizes so I can't limit myself to just one scale but I've always gravitated towards 1/3 dolls, and it's where I focus my collection on the most. I love the weight to them, they just feel so sturdy and satisfying. And although their size means they eat up so much space, I do love how impressive they look. You certainly can't ignore them, lol. Although I'm not gonna lie, I am a little envious of people who are mainly or fully 1/4 collectors, because the size is a lot more convenient, and I feel like it's much easier to find cute furniture and props as opposed to 1/3s. But something about the magic of the 1/3 scale is irresistible to me.
So I prefer larger dolls mostly. I won't buy smaller ones unless it's secondhand because I can't justify spending the same amount on a smaller doll that an SD would cost. I stick to secondhand mainly now anyway as I've gotten excellent deals and I love to "save" pre-owned dolls. My first was an MSD before I truly got into collecting. Then once I started browsing, I found the perfect doll for an OC and she actually helped me work out finances better so I could get her. I saw a picture of her near a dog and had to have her just due to her size as she was an SD. I love all dolls, but I love really large dolls too. If I could I'd probably own a million really big dolls from Dollmore, but alas, definitely out of budget for now. I'm a bit picky about what dolls I want but I'll admire most from afar, so my majority collection is SD+. I own quite a few sizes though including YOSD and tinies. Iplehouse recently made me happy by turning their dolls into FID sizes because I love their sculpts. I plan to collect them once I nab all the largers I like. I'll finally be able to carry around certain ones. If more companies offered both sizes of certain sculpts, I'd love it. I'd probably have my wallet screaming, but I'd adore having two sizes of the same sculpt.
No need to apologize, I was mostly complaining about my old age and not being able to remember if something did happen, or I just feel like it did ! Lol! That's what I mean with déjà vu feeling seeping in. As the other commenter said, mods will eventually merge threads that are too similar anyway, so there's no need to worry or apologize for it. (:
That's a difficult question. I collect both 1/4 and 1/3 sized dolls with my EID Jessica being the tallest one. And I have more 1/4 and 1/3 incoming. Currently I have no real desire to get smaller or bigger sizes. At first I was pretty sure I prefered 1/4 dolls because they are easier to handle and generally the better posers. But then I took the plunge and bought impressively detailed clothing for my 1/3 girls . They look absolutely stunning. So I think I love both sizes equally and I would like to keep collecting both. But space is becoming an issue thus I might focus more on 1/4 for practical reasons.
20-39cm because they're easy to store/move around and most indie/artist dolls fall into that height range. I do have MDD on its way so I'll see if I like her enough to get more dolls in that size.
I had to try and experience owning at least 1 of each sizes before deciding. Honestly, I like 60cm and below. 62cm is also acceptable for me. But anything bigger than that, I cannot handle because they are too bulky, heavy, and they take up too much space in my house. This is also reason why I sold my customized Alastor BJD (70cm) because I can't handle the size
I've had at least one of each size over the years and I think ultimately it's between 1/4 and 1/6. I like having them stand next to me at my desk and anything larger makes me worry that they're going to fall but anything smaller and they typically don't pose how I'd like.
Oh, I've always been drawn to the larger SD sizes. I do find the smaller sizes adorable, and I'm sure I would like to own one or two eventually, but I just want more and more SDs.
Wow, it seems like pretty much the majority of people here prefer SD or bigger! And lots of boys too, it seems like those who have bigger sizes also have more boys, while the smaller ones have more girl dolls. Very interesting
It turns out I love MSDs and my new favorite size is 31cm. I have purchased fewer SDs lately, though they DO trickle in... I thought I'd end up loving SDs the most but I like slightly smaller dolls. They are lighter, sometimes easier to pose and a little cheaper.
Didn't include this information in my original post but mine (in all/any sizes) are more girls than boys. (1 girl Lusion, 4 boys to 14 girls in SD size, 3 boys to 7 girls in Mini and Slim Mini size, 2 boys to 4 girls in "Inbetweenie" size, 3 boys to 5 girls in 1/6 size... etc). I prefer to sew for girls too, and also find fewer nice boy outfits for sale and even fewer that are worth the price. So, the boys are not only fewer in number but also the "poor relations" in terms of their range of clothing choices in my resin family. Teddy
The guys do (and pretty much always have-) had the numbers advantage over here... But that's because I'm a lot pickier about girl sculpts in some ways. Their faces have to "match" their bods maturity-wise and a lot of female BJDs fall into that "Little Girl face on a Very Mature adult body" weirdness. It's not that I don't WANT to add girls to the gang, it's just that there have been a lot fewer girls over the years that had me making grabby-hands and pushing "Buy" buttons because of that common maturity and style mismatch.
{shudder!} Yes. I have a lot of trouble with that, especially in SD size. Most of my SD girls are hybridded onto the few more-immature SD size bodies I've been able to find, with a couple fo other bodes with the boobs modded off, or boy bodies with the "boy-bits" removed to introduce some variation in their build/height/silhouette. It also caused the oddity thqt nthe most mature of my SD girls is actually shorter and more petite than most of the younger children, even if I put her in heels.... so they won't be getting any hand-me-down clothing from that older sister Teddy
Honestly, so far ive found that msd is the nicest for me, unless its vinyl dolls, in which case i like sd, but thats a weight thing tbh
I literally own every size of dolls from tiny pet to 75cm boy. My favourite size is MSD/MDD size! They are easy to take along, also not so small to make stuff for them.
While I have an MSD and an FID boy, but I prefer dolls 62cm and taller. The scale works best for me, I've found, as I can sew items comfortably for them and the weight & size in my arms is a great comfort. I don't know that I'd go taller than, say, 80cm though. Probably 75cm is the upper limit I'd be willing to keep, so I don't end up feeling overwhelmed by a single doll.
I wouldn’t say that I have a favorite size. I just would not buy a doll bigger that 40 cm or smaller than 10.
In the world of bjds I won't go under 1/3rd scale, mostly because their size is part of what drew me to them but also because those tiny dolls can cost the same as their much larger counterparts and I can't personally justify buying one. Also, I'm horrible and they'd get lost in no time lol.
I like pretty much every size, for different reasons. Though I do like 1/6 size dolls in particular, because they are very easy to handle and really fun to pose.
I love 1/6 scale dolls. I have had almost every size at this point, and I prefer the ones that can share barbie sized things. Atelier Momoni is my favorite because they pose better than any other dolls I have had and I think they are all adorable. They also fit in a variety of different dolls clothes in that scale, they take up very little space and they are fun to play with.
I like 1/3 and larger the best (mine range from 52cm to ~70cm). A 60cm doll was what I started with and the larger ones just seem to fit my characters better. Now, if the fashion 1/4 had been around when I got into the hobby, then I might've gotten into them first. But, it's big ones that catch my attention, and mostly boys at that. I do have 1/4, 1/6, and smaller. And while I love them, I still focus on the big ones more. Wish they didn't take up so much space, though lmao
Recently, I really thought I'd love 1/3 and up sized dolls. After handling and owning one though, I got quite overwhelmed by the size. I found myself loving 1/4 and 1/6 dolls because they're so much easier to handle. They can also be quite adorable! c:
Depends on my mood and my pain levels (I have chronic pain due to relatively newish accident). I used to tote around my SDs all the time before my injury. Now I prefer carrying around my Yo-SD as it is both lighter and compact for covert dolly adventures. However, I'm recently been toting around the DearSDs around the house as they are lighter than the SDs but large enough for me to admire the details without too much eye strain. Haha. However, when it comes to buying, my range is still the whole spectrum of Yo-SDs, Dear SDs, SD10, SDGr, and SD13 with maybe a few exceptions for the tall boys. Hahaha. They are a separate category.
My favorite BJD size are SDs in the 60-65 range ! But I love bigger SDs too ! I want to get into tinies and MSDs but its hard since I am shelling characters and the more semi-realistic look of SDs just fits them better c: i would love to get a smaller doll later on that I can just dress up in cute lil outfits~
I have dolls in sizes from 20cm to 65cm and each size offers something different to the table, and honestly, the sculpt and aesthetics are priorities for me. Having said so, I tend to gravitate more to SD dolls - they allow much more detailed face sculpt, can take more details for faceup and have more options for what fabric and pattern I can use for their clothes. It also helps that I prefer more mature faces, and those are more often available in SD size. There is also something really magical about their presence and weight...
I like all sizes but I prefer anywhere from 50-70cm. Got a 95 cm but i made her myself. Cant seem to find any that big (and female) to buy yet. :c
