My favorite size is MSD, but I've never handled or seen an SD in person before, so I guess I don't know for sure x'D The idea of an SD really intimidates me though! Especially because I'm more interested in male dolls, and I know a male SD would be a hunk. (I think I'd be scared to break him, which I know probably makes less sense because SD's are probably thicker? But I'm kind of a noodle so I'd probably be likely to drop him knowing me). I get really nervous handling my Iplehouse FID boy sometimes! That said I LOVE the range of sculpts I've seen in SD size. It almost tempts me, and if I had more space, maybe I'd take that plunge. But alas I am confined to one room and it is already bursting at the seams.
I have dolls ranging from 1/4 all the way up 75cm. I actually love anything over 70cm the best though, even 65cms is a little too small for me these days. The only problem I have is clothing some of the 75cm guys is so hard it stops me from getting more of them
Early on I just assumed that my favorite size was 1/6 scale and that it would always be that way. Now that I think about it though, it's obvious to me that my biases lean towards the 1/4 scale MSDs, even if the YOSDs are easier to travel with. Heck, I think the majority of my collection so far is MSDs!
It really depends on the doll for me. Gem of Dolls 1/4 models are usually supposed to be young children. Bo Zeya and Ho Chily seem to be the exception and are teenish to young women. Sometimes, you just want a smaller BJD and they worked for me. If anyone's interested, the fullset is no longer sold but the fullbody with faceup is. They're 200ish and Gem of Doll, IMO, is good quality.
I prefer collecting male dolls and sometimes the smaller 1/4 are sold as teenager and it makes me uncomfortable buying an anatomically correct doll being as old as I am, haha. I can be sure the 1/3 mens can at least buy their own drinks. It's a weird hang up for an inanimate object, but I guess being a parent makes that sort of thing linger in the front of my brain. I don't judge any one, there's all kinds of body types at the adult age, but we all got our quirks.
My favorite size is SD (52-65cm). But I have one chubby doll 35 cm tall and she stands very nicely, which I like. I wouldn't want skinny MSDs or smaller ones because I would be afraid of breaking their thin fingers. And 70+ is too heavy for me. I like to go outside to take pictures.
It used to be so easy to just say SD back when Hounds were the only 70cm doll, but now the SD continuum just continues to grow! I'm still a fan of and only actively collect 54cm - 65cm, stylized dolls. I like maintaining a fairly consistent crew
When I first started at 50 I was thrilled to get the big guys, my mini men. Then I got arthritis and the big guys have to just sit and be slowly handled. No at 65 I am more into the YO size. I like small but to small is not great for my fingers. I have 1 soon 2 MSD dolls, but otherwise it's the YO and a couple of SD guys. Smart Dolls are okay as I can handle them and the weight is nothing.
Ive handled 1/3 dolls before and its a little bit too big much for me. I think 1/4 is perfect in terms of scale, since you can pose it and handle it easily, and it takes less space too.
Definitely the bigger ones. Idk why I'm just fascinated by them. My first and currently only one is 73 cm. I underestimated how tall he's gonna be when I ordered him and how complicated to handle, but wouldn't change a thing.
My MSDs are easier to travel with but there's just something nice about the weight of SDs. My dream is to visit Tenshi no Sato next year and bring one of my Volks MSDs with me. So MSDs probably win out as my favourite size just on how portable they are
First i thought i might only like MSD dolls. They are not too big and quite handy. But after i got my first SD i was 100% sure i’m a SD person. i just love everything about them and taking pictures of is is somehow more fun!
As much as I love looking at the stuff people make for SD and other big dolls, my heart belongs to the tinies, YoSD and smaller. It's especially fun seeing what I can make for a 16cm doll, and how to translate details down without looking bad at such a small scale. I still want an MSD though, because I want to do things with more detail and have a doll that looks a bit more "grown-up" than the tiny babies.
My favourite size is the bigger SD, 65cm+ or more. I find it easier to sew for that size than the smaller dolls. I also find them a bit easier to string and pose. They are quite heavy thou, so I don't like to take them outside a lot, so for that I love the smaller dolls.
I prefer 1/4, but I've sorta gotten myself stuck with 1/3 now that I've shelled one of my OCs in one and can't change the scale up for the other ones xD I also prefer masculine male designs, and I can find them the best in 1/3... ! 1/4 is so holdable and the hobby is full of clothes that fit them!
a month ago I liked MSD dolls, and today I don’t let go of the Rainmanking doll and it seems to me that this is the best doll in my collection today)…. let's see what happens in a couple of weeks
Oh man do I know this feeling...I have 1/12 scale dolls through the larger end of 1/4 in my collection, and I seem to bounce between what I'm loving. So far it seems what I can say is that I'm not interested in the 1/3 and bigger dolls? But all the other scales I seem to find something to appreciate about. I find miniatures endlessly fascinating, so sometimes I love the tiny ones, and other times I'm enjoying the weight and sturdiness of my larger dolls.
I've never heard of Rainmanking doll. Those are GORGEOUS! I learn something new every time I come on this forum. lol
Since I got my Feeple60, I have at least one of each size now, and I have to say, my favorite are always going to be the tinies. There's something about my little 1/8th elves that bring me a lot of joy and 1/6th are right behind them. It might seem weird to think of something so small being sturdy, but they feel that way to me, probably because their arms and legs aren't so long. The larger dolls feel more elegant to me, and more for display, while I can see the appeal of putting a tiny in my pocket or purse and taking them with me. I'll admit price point and storage capacity helps a lot too!
in the collection it is better to have all sizes of dolls, only in this way you can understand what you like best. Now I do this: if I’m tired of the doll or I doubt its size, then I put it in a box and in a closet, after a few months I take it out ... and if there are no feelings, then I sell the doll, because I have a very large collection and already no room for new dolls
My favourite size is 1/3, specifically 58-65cm. (Maybe up to 68cm - I'm waiting for a couple of these taller ones.) So many reasons! Big enough to have presence and intricate detail in the sculpting. They're a comfortable, deliciously heavy weight in my hands... ...but not too heavy. I can still carry a doll with one hand by their hips. When I sit down on the floor to pose them, I can more or less look them in the eye - which I really like, I feel like I'm communicating with them... ...but they're not tall enough to headbutt me when they fall over. They faceplant on my shoulder instead - less painful! 1/3s at this height tend to be in the age group that I like - youthful/adolescent. I'm not interested in having small children or grownup adults in BJD form. Big variety of clothing styles to buy for them! Easy to sew their clothing and add details.
I really thought MSD’s were my favorite size and was committed to only collecting under 47cm, but I just got my first SD boy (Aimerai Akagi - 68cm) and he’s got me rethinking everything which I did not expect AT ALL. The larger doll feels a bit nicer/comforting to hold, is definitely easier to photograph, and the options for clothing seem unlimited compared to the smaller dolls. You live and you learn I guess lol.
I have different sizes of dolls, yosd, msd and one Smart doll. I think MSD is my favorite size, not so small like 1/6, very nice for face-up. But small dolls are so good to travel with, if you don't have a lot of space in your backpack.
1/4 (MSD) size is by far my favorite. They are large enough to see details but easy to handle and pose for pictures. I do have some 1/3 (SD) dolls which are gorgeous, but I have a difficult time taking good pictures of them! Dollfie Dream dolls are fun and light enough for easy posing, but I get so paranoid about staining them.
I now started to like 30 cm dolls - Jacoosun doll. Dolls with amazing energy, I don’t want to let them out of my hands, I’m waiting for what will happen next... how long will my love for them last?
When i first joined the hobby i was set on nothing but MSD and I was pretty confident it would stay that way. Well..I was wrong. I love 1/6, 1/4, and 1/3 all equally because they're all so lovely in their own ways . 1/6 dolls feel so lovely and compact, and I love being able to just take them anywhere like a little buddy. 1/4 just feels like a good sweet spot in terms of detail, convenience, and handling.. But there really is something so satisfying about a big 1/3 girl. I got my first SD size lady a few months ago and wow. Already planning my next one!!
There is something delightful about 1/12 scale BJDs - they fit your standard dollhouse and in your pocket. And they're so TINY. I love tiny things. But my favorite size is as big as I can get. T&D has an 85 cm boy? I ordered him. Dollmore has a 4-foot-tall boy? He's on order too, and of course I have a ~3.5 foot tall Trinity. And then there's the crown jewel of my collection... MOAR BIG DOLL, YESSSSSS.
The BJD's I have the most of are PukiFees, but they are not necessarily my favourite size. I have a mixed collection, but mostly MSD and under, the smallest being RealPukis, I love them all.
I used to only think I would like 1/4th scale but as soon as I got my first 1/3rd...I was hooked lol I still collect all sizes though, but the larger size is definitely my favorite.
Is that the huge Magical Angel doll? I'm failing to get what scale this is but she looks person-sized I assume the one with blue hair on the right is a Trinity? I really can't wrap my head around this.
Yes - the huge doll in the middle is one six-foot/180-cm tall Xin Meng Doll Magical Angel Iris, and the little blue-haired girl is Dollmore Trinity Elysia, who is 112cm/~3.5 feet tall. 1:1 scale dolls are technically off topic, but there's lots of on-topic dolls in the picture too - all as big I can find. Iris needs more, thicker elastic, which I'm hoping to do before the next doll meet. I want to bring her with me and see if any folks want to take turns sitting with her for pictures.
I commend your bravery, that's a whole lot of doll to take around. I know how huge and heavy Trinity dolls are and she looks tiny in comparison. Actually, what is the height of the doll with the loose sweater and long brown-blonde hair, right against the Iris' right knee? Are the shorter ones in the front MSD size?
Ah, you've caught me being lazy. I generally like to identify all dolls/sculpts when I post pictures, but sometimes, I forget. counting dolls by Maleficient MrsofallEvil, on Flickr 1. @MaleficentMrsofEvil Oh you didn't have to... Thanks for putting so much work into this. Wow there's a massive difference between SD and 65/68cm. I think this picture really cemented that visually in my head.
You're welcome, and I'm happy to do it. I have a LOT of dolls, so if someone else gets some useful info from my pictures, then I feel like I've made a little contribution to the community. I love them all, but some folks are a bit more, erm, discerning in their collecting.
1/4, 1/6 and tinies are the best for me - specially 1/4, since you can get many perks of the 1/3 without them being that expensive or big. I do have a 60cm girl, but for me? 45cm is definitely the best size.
I recently bought my first 1/4 MSD, and I am in love with the size! I own almost every size now. I have a couple of 1/3 SD girls and SD17 boys, and they can be overwhelming and heavy at times. I often wish they were the size of my 1/4 girl, but there are so many 1/3 sculpts that are so interesting to me! I also own a 1/6 YoSD and a 1/12 tiny!
I don't own any other size BJD yet, but I love my 1/3 SD dolls! Something about the size of the clothing and accessories is fun for me! I have 1/6 fashion dolls, and I love them too but in terms of chunkyness and detail in BJDS, I've always preferred the large sizes. I could see myself adding some 1/4 MSD, but I'm not sure if I'd ever go bigger than 60 cm at this time though! I'm intimidated haha
I always liked 1/6 and smaller. When i first started the bjd hobby i was absolutely shocked that dolls that were 1/4 even existed, but they still look so nice and i’m still thinking about at least getting one 1/4 for myself. Since i collected art dolls and figures before i started the bjd hobby, it was extremely convenient for me to get 1/6 bjds due to the size, cost, and designs being similar or the same.
I’ve always been a 68-70cm person, although I’ve dabbled in other sizes. They feel weighty enough to feel substantial without breaking your arms. That said, I’ve fallen for several 75cm boys as of late, which is bad because I don’t have room as it is.
I have dolls from 11 cm to 75 cm. Previously I thought that I like BIG dolls )) I was dreaming about Mecha angel. But after years in hobby, I realised that my favourite size is around 50 cm. They are perfect for me. And I’d like to change bodies of bigger dolls for smaller ones and make the same characters
My dolls range from 48cm to 79cm, and I find there’s really 2 ideal sizes in my collection. There’s ideal shortie size, which is 52-56cm, in which Vidania and Cole exist. They fit SD13 clothes reasonably well. They’re light enough to transport in pairs. They’re cute and not cumbersome. my other ideal size is my Tall Gal Size, which is 65-68cm. These dolls have a lot of presence. They fit 65cm girl clothes, and Soom old supergem, and Iplehouse SID girl. This is the size range for the two taller bodies Twigling makes (short torso/long thigh, and long torso/long thigh) and they’re one of my favourite sizes of doll. Also if they dress more butch, they fit sd13 boy clothes (a little tight) and SD17 boy clothes (a little loose). Most of my dolls fit into this size, honestly.
1/4 is definitely my favorite, they are big enough that I don't feel like their too fragile but still small enough to carry with me. I think the largest size I would get is 60 cm. I'm kinda small so I don't think it would be very comfortable to carry or dress a 70 cm doll, makes me tired just thinking about it.
My dolls are all Soom Super Gem (59-65 cm). I love them, but I don't really *do* anything with them. Lately, I've realized that might be because they're just too big for me to handle comfortably. Kind of the reason I lost interest in the hobby for a while... :/ I've been thinking about getting a tiny doll for photoshoots and all that for some time now... it just seems like a fun part of the hobby that I've been missing out on. Hopefully, I'm less 'scared' to handle those. So, I guess, I prefer bigger dolls for collection purposes, and smaller ones to actually play with.
I wonder at what scale the sheer physics of a doll's body are too much for simple string tension to hold up against on its own. You already need locks and other gimmicks at 50-60cm range to hold certain poses... What's the limit? 70cm? 80cm? Am I completely wrong and they make 100cm+ dolls who stand and pose perfectly? That's one major issue that made me reconsider dolls over a certain height - the oher being that I like the more traditional SD proportions with 22-23cm heads. They just look nicer with clothes IMO, especially clothes that aren't tight fitting. I think I might not enjoy a doll that's 20cm taller than the one I own, but with a head 3cm smaller...
So as an owner of a 112 cm Dollmore Trinity (and a 180 cm off-topic BJD), in addition to just about everything in between, I would say that once a doll gets to around 63-65 cm, unless the company makes the resin pretty thin, you need to up your engineering game and elastic diameter. For example, Dikadoll senior girls (around 62.5 cm) are made with thick resin. They are super heavy. You need at least 4 mm diameter elastic. For my dolls that hover closer to 70 cm, I try to upgrade all of them to 5 mm diameter elastic. My Trinity has 6 mm diameter elastic and plant wire, and it's barely enough to keep her standing - and I would not trust her to stand unsupervised. My 180 cm doll is - well, she's a mess. She flops all over the place. We have 7-8 mm diameter elastic, and it's still not enough. She needs a cap in her torso to keep her chest from constantly disconnecting. Honestly, I plan to restring her and double up the elastic, too - one string for each leg. I love big dolls, because they have such a presence to them. You see one, and you can't help but notice, "Damn. That's a big doll." But I have no illusions about their abilities to stand or hold complex poses. The bigger the doll is, the harder it is to pose and keep stable. Elastic can only do so much, you know?
Thanks again @MaleficentMrsofEvil, you're always helpful. So it seems like the diminishing returns, so to speak, really happen around SD16 size. I'm even more impressed that resin can stand tension from 8mm elastics without cracking. I imagine there are engineering quirks in the Trinity and the bigger doll, like silicone buffers built into the joints for friction and stress relief?
You're so welcome. Resin can take quite a bit of stress before things start to crack, but with more stress, you need more resin. Trinity hand and feet hooks are HUGE, and they don't use s-hooks. They cast the hook in resin as part of the hand/foot. The dolls are heavy. The resin is probably a good 2 inches thick all the way around in the legs. Very few companies besides Volks put silicone kips/flexible washers in between their joints. I think this is a huge missed opportunity, and kips are dirt cheap at the hardware store. One of the first things I do with a new doll is take it apart and put kips in between all of the joints. It helps a ton with posing and protecting the resin from scratches. It's definitely a trade-off, but I like size best, so that's what I choose when I'm shopping.
Holy... You could use that as a blunt weapon. Maskcat does that! I was looking at my doll's stringing some time ago and I saw these silicone rings into the larger joints like the hip. They're not washers, they look "built in". Was this actually pioneered by Dollshe? I've been reading around and they've first started doing it in 2012.
SD size is by far my favorite. 55-70cm is my preferred range though I have a few who are both taller and shorter. I have a few tinies and a small crowd of MSDs as well that I enjoy...but I always come back to the bigger dolls. I just love the weight of them and how they are just the right size to look me in the eye when I'm sitting on the floor with them. I like how sturdy they feel as well. With smaller dolls I often worry over how delicate they feel. Now, something I've learned in my 15ish years in the hobby, is that I do in fact have a limit. As much as I adore big dolls, if they are tall as well as thick..beefy...whatever you want to call it..it's just too much for me to feel comfortable handling long-term. Example - I had a Soom Idealian boy who I got because I adored his face (Gluino ♥)...but omg he was so hard for me to handle and I found I just didn't enjoy playing with him. I ended up trading him to a good friend for a tall skinny boy instead. It made me rethink my desire to one day get a Dollmore Trinity girl....but I still kind of want one.
I absolutely love mature tinies. Something about them reminds me of fairytale illustrations when I was a kid – they’re just these little perfect people in miniature. I think they might be getting more popular, and I’m so glad. I do love my 1/3 girl, too, but I probably won’t get any more in that size- even though she’s easier to sew for in many ways!
To me are the 62cm Boy dolls, all my boys are and gonna be the same height because of the dream body I want them to own. I prefer my boys to be similar in many ways, that’s why I decided to go for one size (I’m very picky about it) also they share same clothing.
