Do you have a favorite BJD size?

Aug 26, 2021

    1. I have 15cm dolls and 72cm dolls and everything in between, but the perfect size I've settled on is somewhere between 30-40cm. And specifically the chubby or big-headed dolls in that size range. I feel like they have the presence of a large doll (due to their big heads) with the weight of a mini and the display footprint of a tiny. Which is like the best of all worlds for me!

    2. I really like msd because they're easy to play with and make clothes/accessories for, though I'm becoming more and more fond of mature 1/6 since they are so easy to carry around, and clothes can be bought more easily for them.
I just wish there were more options when it comes to mature sculpts in msd, but then again perhaps it's good for my bank account that this size is often a little on the child-like side orz

    3. I prefer 1/3 size! I own nearly only SD dolls. I like when they are 58-65cm, but I have some smaller SD and some larger too.

    4. polar opposites for me. i absolutely enjoy my 68-72 cm boys but at the same time, i like carrying a 12cm doll in my pocket XD

    5. I only have 1/4 scale dolls, but since I've gotten those dolls smaller playline dolls feel way to small for me, so I do enjoy the scale of 1/4 dolls.

I'm not sure about 1/3 scale, though. The very idea of that size seems daunting to me, but I think I wouldn't mind something between 50-58 cms. Perhaps I'll get a smaller 1/3 one day; afterall, the worst that could happen is I don't like it and I can just sell it.

    6. YOSD seems to be the best for me, but I'm interested in getting a mature 1/6 and a big baby to find out if it's more about the height or the chunkier body.

    7. I may be in the minority here but honestly, I do not have a preference at all. I adore my 60cm Resinsoul Mi and I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of my 70cm Dollshe Bermann, but I also love my MSDs and I'm saving up for a Littlefee and Cocoriang tiny at the moment. I like having a range of sizes in my collection.

    8. SD sized are my weakness. I started this hobby knowing this and have since gotten an MSD and a YOSD but always find myself drawn to the bigger dolls :XD:

Not going to lie though, they're a pain to carry around but also they're perfect to just sit with and cuddle compared to the smaller sizes. I like the idea though of the more mature MSDs being portable and cheaper but I think the challenging thing at the moment is hoping that the heads of SD dolls I like would make it to MSD size eventually :'3 For example, I love Iplehouse's Y.I.D. Olivia but if I had the option of having her be MSD sized without sacrificing the body, then that'd be great :)

    9. Hmmm I think SD's (60's) and my MSD's are the ones of mine i use the most :) I have larger dolls on the way, which i'm looking alot forward to!

    10. MSD and YoSD! I can't really decided between the two. I love the small size and cute faces of YOs, but for MSDs I just find are easier to customize and buy furniture and clothes for, I think. Mainly because they're closer to the height of American Girl dolls, so furniture from other doll brands work pretty well for them.

    11. MSD for sure! I have one SD but he's huge and heavy. Tiny dolls make me worry about how to restring them when the time comes.

    12. Over the years I have had a variety of sizes (Yo-SD, MSD, SD) but I prefer MSD and SD. More MSD than SD to be honest. Since I am just getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus I think MSD is where my collection is going to be at but I may get a wild hair and add a SD or two of my grail dolls to my collection.

    13. I love big dolls... I started with the 70cm size and never looked back. Anything around 68-80cm is perfect. I've had some in the 45-60 range too but never really bonded with any besides my DC Agatha... I'm trying hard to enjoy my ~30cm LW Chloe, I love her proportions but I'm not sure I'll connect with such a small size (by my standards, anyway) :sweat

    14. I only have MSDs. I've been thinking about getting a 1/3 but I'm not sure about the size, weight and everything. I'm also afraid about not being able to photograph them together...
I guess only time will tell

    15. I got my 1/3 boy, and I have the feeling I will never be able to look back now. I was once horrified by the idea of such a large doll, but now I find that he's just absolutely perfect. A smaller doll would get lost in my collection of Monster High and Living Dead Dolls, but he stands out just so beautifully.

    16. I prefer 1/3 ones personally. I have already purchased too many outfits and wigs etc that if they are all the same size, it is easier.
But would also consider other sizes if there are interesting sculpts.

    17. I have dolls in all kinds of different sizes and like all of them for different reasons. I guess if I had to choose it would be 1/12 scale like Lil’ Fairies and Obitsu 11, but I am also really enjoying my 1/3 Azone (who is 48cm so more like 1/4 size).

    18. 70cm. I like them big because I can't sew small but 1/3 and 70cm are still small enough I don't need to buy too many yards of expensive fabric.

    19. I enjoy 1/3 scale, maxing out at 60cm or so. 1/4 is a nice size and I enjoy my MSD girl very much and will enjoy when I get my next in a similar size. However, I do find myself loving my bigger dolls more. They are heavy but I like their heaviness, they feel sturdy to me even while still being rather delicate.

    20. I really love 1/6 child dolls, especially the smaller end, around 26cm.
I have quite a few Littlefee, and a Volks Yosd and two Rosen Lied Tuesday's Children, it's just such a lovely size to play with.
I don't have any bigger dolls because I don't have the space for them, but I think they might feel a bit cumbersome for me anyway? I'm not really sure, and I have one (slightly) smaller doll, a Luts tiny20, and I just don't feel as happy with her as I do my 1/6 girls.

    21. im gonna have to say msd’s are my favorite atm! i had a pukipuki & pukifee but they were too sma i couldnt bond. i also currently own a volks yosd una but looking to sell her since i also cant bond :/ i just think especially for building characters how i like i need a more mature doll. the only thing that i struggle with 1/4 dolls is that there arent many mature boys. so that has me thinking about trying out and sd doll. but the size is pretty intimidating since ive never even seen one irl :pout:

    22. SD, but when it comes to particular styles like detailed resin or cute animal type dolls MSD are easier to handle for me. I'd love to get a 80cm doll and see how that goes :love

    23. I love yosds because they are so easy to store :)

    24. Right now, I just have MSDs and I quite like them. I'm interested in checking out SDs some time but space constraints now, and I think I'd want a chance to see one in person first to get a feel for them! (Though I hadn't seen any BJDs in person before getting my MSDs, so y'know.)

There's cute dolls of all sizes, but I try to stick to MSDs, preferably around 45cm. I have a bunch of playline dolls in the like 1/6th scale, so I feel like that side's covered. 1/12 would be just too small for me to make clothes comfortably. 1/3 I don't have space for and, as pretty as many are, I tend to fall in love with slightly cartoonier faces than a lot of them have! MSDs are big enough to both sew and knit clothes comfortably without worrying too much about material choice, tend to have faces I like, and fit in the space I have without being cumbersome or easily lost among a menagerie of Barbies and Monster High.

    25. Oh yeah, totally 1/4. I like the weight of them in my hands, they are large dolls but not so large they're too heavy for me and I can share all my clothes between them~

      • x 1
    26. I think I'd have to say a 1/3 size. I've got two on the way, and even though I've never held one in person, that size feels the most aesthetically pleasing to me - I personally like being able to see more details on things, and over and above having a larger head for me to admire the faceup on, I guess the items made for 1/3 size feels like they have the 'right' amount of detailing:XD:

    27. I dont know if I have a favourite, but I tend to steer towards 75cm size (I pampered my big boys than my smol boys) but I do know that my life will prolly be easier if I stick to SD17 sizes:sigh

    28. I'm an SD person at heart. I've tried my fair share of MSDs and YoSDs over the years, but I often find myself uninspired with them. I currently only have one Yo and MSD each, and I've even been considering parting with my Yo as of late!

    29. jumping on here because I don't want to make another thread of an already existing one! but wanted to discuss this topic :D

I always thought I preferred 1/4 scale, just because it was a good medium, not too small but not too big. Being honest anything bigger than 1/4 kinda scares me :XD: I think SD are all so detailed and intricate but the size freaks me out as well as they're so much more expensive!
That saying I recently got my first 1/6 doll and oh boy I love the size sm!! He's just so holdable and cute, I might be biased tho because I've always had a soft sport for minatures lol Maybe I will get more of that size in the future!

    30. When I first started it was ¼ all the way. A few smaller dolls worked their way in as little siblings. They are easier to buy props for.

Now, it's ⅓ & up. I really like the bigger dolls. I have to make more of their furniture, clothes, it does give me more doll projects. They are heavier to carry around, but I really like the weight of them. I just really enjoy the size of them. I find them more fun to have around.

    31. 1/4 is my favorite for sure!

    32. I think MSDs would be my favorite size, though I do like the maturity of 70cm sculpts.

    33. I only own 1/4, 1/6 and 1/8 because anything bigger is not for me that so, between those sizes, I would say the one I'm most inclined to get (considering every part of the hobby like clothing availability, posability, variety of sculpts, etc.) is MSD.

    34. 1/4 feels just right for me, size wise. It also helps that they are very easy to get props and furniture for. I also have a soft spot for YoSD and BID sized dolls.

    35. I really admire 1/3 and up because I love super buff male bodies and I haven't seen any 1/4 dolls or smaller that's lived up to bigger sculpts (like think the voice with its juicy ass pecs:drool) but again the size is scary to me, I wish they made more smaller beefy dolls!:eusa_pray

    36. BIIIIG meaty ones! The Dollshe Superman i just learned about is a DREAM GRAIL doll omgggg, but i love 1/3 60cm+ dolls!

    37. I like 1/3 scale (SD and MSD)!
I used to primarily collect 1/6 dolls but after getting my MDD I fell in love with the scale. The clothing is so detailed and the dolls feel more life-like at that size.

    38. I used to think I did not, but I recently realised I do.

I like to “use” my dolls (As in pictures, changing outfits etc). I’d also like to start making them more unique.

I realised recently that the SD sized and bigger dolls are just much too big for me. I’m kind of weak and handling 3kg+ heavy dolls are just too much for me to handle comfortably, they’re a hassle to transport (In my opinion), and it’s a lot of work to change their outfits- It can be super fun, but it’s not for me. Their clothes, the way to customize them etc is also a tiny bit more pricey.

But I think the YoSD sized dolls are a bit too small, and generally have a more “childish” face in my opinion, unless they’re model dolls or whatever it’s called. I also think the “normal” YoSD sized dolls don’t have as much “mature” looking clothing options, and I love mature looking clothing options!

So, basically, I love MSDs the most- to me, they have the best of what I prefer in both YoSD and SDs; they have mature AND childish looking clothes that are quiet easy to find, they’re a little cheaper than SDs to customise (and in price), and they’re already much easier to transport, even if they’re not as easy as YoSDs. They don’t take as much space as SDs; but they’re “easier” to handle than YoSDs because of their slightly bigger size.

    39. No offense to my msds or big boys, but tinies seem to be my fave. And within that group I really like the PKF to yosd size the best (tho my absolute, hands-down favorite individual doll is actually smaller than a Puki). Will admit they're easier to transport & lighter, but that's not really why I like them "most." I think it's that at first I fell in love with a group of sculpts that happened to be in that size, and (w/ 1 exception) only that size so I collected a bunch of them, and that the group of characters my tinies represent are some of the nearest & dearest to me.

    40. In the beginning of my obsession, I seemed to have a rather eclectic taste when it came to sizes, but that has been changing. I typically avoid anything above MSD (and am currently parsing down my MSDs so I can afford some different smaller friends). One of my larger sized MSDs is a Dream Valley Vine Fullset. I couldn't imagine having anything bigger than him, although I really adore his head sculpt and hair. If I had to really nail down a size, it would be YoSD (mature 1/6ths being my favorite to make clothing for, and toddler-esque 1/6th being my favorite to dress up in clothing I buy). I really like my tinies. They travel well and do the whole "little doll, big world" aesthetic really nicely.

    41. I have BJD’s in all sizes, but I really love 1/3 the best. I think it is because the fashions and boots are so much more realistic and detailed.

    42. I have many sizes from 1/8 scale up. But my favorite will always be the 1/3 70cm+ boys

    43. 1/4 is a perfect size for me, but i notice that clothes for 1/6 are so cute and easier to find. I might start looking at dolls in that size.

    44. I love the 30-40 cm size, especially with an adorably large head! The "too tall to be 1/6 but too short to be 1/4" just works the best for me, because it's still large and hefty like a resin doll, but portable enough that it's easy to store and transport. Large heads leave lots of room for fancy eyes, hair and face-ups like a bigger doll too.

    45. I own two dolls in 1/4 and 1/6.
My favourite size is 1/4 though: not too big, not too small. Would love to purchase 1/3 one day, but I feel slightly intimidated by this size :XD:
Also noticed that I start to gravitate towards 1/6 from time to time after not interacting with 1/4 for a while. (Although I have some other 1/6 dolls which are not BJDs, so that might be affecting the preference as well)

    46. Larger dolls feel more "alive" to me and interact better with human-sized objects (even if they're still relatively small..). I'll always prefer SD sized dolls for that reason.

    47. Seeing a lot of people say 1/4 which I have to agree with. It's the perfect middle ground between large and small for me. I get scared thinking about getting dolls that are even bigger!! I just wish it was easier to find more mature 1/4 sculpts.. They always look a touch too youthful for a lot of my characters.

    48. I have multiple sizes, but I think my go to now is 1/3! I think that size is really the perfect one for me.:aangel:

    49. I love the little ones, MSD is about as big as I would go!

    50. 1/4 definitely. Best size for handling and displaying, imo!

    51. I love 75cm+.. you get so much more detail and they just have a bigger presence with a more mature look. I also love the heavier weight. What I hate about big dolls though is finding a good stand

    52. I have 1/4 dolls but I'm waiting on a 1/6 one now, and can't wait to play around with different props at that size. I've always been a fan of miniatures and Rement stuff so the 1/6 size really appeals to me. Plus they're so darn cute!

    53. 1/4 is a sure favorite, although my favorite doll is a 1/6. I was initially on the 1/6 and 1/12 sizes only, but as I got my first 1/4 doll, I realized I like this size a lot more as well as being enamored by other dolls of 1/4 size. It's a pretty versatile size since it's big enough to feel a strong character for me but also small enough for outings. I do have a 1/3 head meant for 65 cm+ bodies, but I would rather use it for something else other than as a doll since I think a 1/3 doll is too large, especially when they go beyond 60 cm, as well as being too unwieldy. But watch me go back on this since this was my initial reaction to 1/4 dolls. :XD:

    54. I have dolls of all sizes; big 70+cm SSDs, down to 3-4 cm micros. My favorite size though I think are Pukipuki size.

    55. I started with 1/3, simply because I fell in love with a particular doll. Now with more doll options on the market, and better understanding on what's available and after trying out 1/3, 1/4 and 1/6, I'm only keeping 1/6 with more or less grown up body proportions. Big dolls didn't really work for me, I'm only comfortable handling small dolls and it is easier to craft for them too.

    56. My collection spans the size spectrum, from tinies to 70+ cm. I am partial to dolls of 1/3 scale and up in size, and MSDs are a close second favorite. I think I am happy with the selection of tinies I have now and doubt I will be looking to get any more.

    57. SD and MSD♡

    58. My favorite size is the classic 1/3 size such as volks SD10-13 (the most concise example) but as a very close follower I really like dolls slightly smaller, such as Obitsu 48/50 and SQ lab which has a body the same size (listed as sg53) as well as classic MSD. The 50cm size is mostly just longer in the legs. I like these all very much and the ones in between them. Bigger and smaller I like way less.

    59. 1/3 and up. Because I love more mature faces. Drawback is they are sooo heavy and occupies a lot of spaces.

    60. The more I spend with my big babies, the more I like them. They're so cute and pudgy. <3
