i tend to draw potential doll characters and then find a sculpt to fit them. However, when the doll arrives, it becomes it's own character and nothing like the drawing i first started with
I will soon (Hopefully this weekend)! I need to design their "default" look, as the characters wear costumes a lot, and need non-costume outfits to wear.
Here's a doodle I did of my two guys on order! It's not that great, I swear I've gotten worse at drawing since being in college art classes, but I'm trying to get back to where I'd been. Sera is a Resinsoul Sui head on the Tang body in dark tan and Jean is an Akagi Doll Ban! Sera and Jean Coffee by Marshall Darling, on Flickr
This is my art of my original character that I greatly plan to give a shell in the future ^^ It would take a while before I get to her though because I still need to plan and research on stuffs, wish me luck ;; v ;;
I always draw my dolls when I first get them- It's my main method of planning the eventual character/faceup/design! As I'm trying to capture/simplify the face (usually by memory) I sort of just naturally develop a personality for them. I would post some here but they're doodles from work on lined paper, and I don't want to be owned that badly by all the awesome, high quality art in this thread. X'D
I am not really good at drawing so I don't usually draw a thing but with my coming girl I seem to have the necessity of drawing her in different angles and clothing. It is helping a lot with character development and outfit planning so I'm really happy about it!
I paint sometimes, but it happens very rarely, only if I have a special mood. Never tried to draw my doll. Someday I'll try. Thanks for the idea! There are a lot of good drawings in this thread!
Oh, I love this thread, so many nice drawings! I'm still waiting for my first BJD but I've already started to design some clothes for him. I've only made some pretty rough sketches until now but I can't wait to draw more detailed ones when he's finally in front of me! Maybe I'll post some later.
I love drawing my dolls, they can be really helpful for pose and anatomy references. It can also be really inspiring to see the character you have in your mind as a doll in real life. I think my dolls have helped me improve my drawing, and my drawing has helped me improve how I want my dolls to look too!
I'm still super new to the hobby but I am making my drawn OCs into dolls ^^ I'm very attached to my OCs so it only made sense for me to base the dolls on them ^^ I don't have a finished project yet... but I will post art and my dolls here once they have come together!
i like to get art of dolls (i dont have any bjd's yet) but i do draw concept art for what id like my first doll to look like
I'm pretty sure a small child without full mastery of their fine motor skills could draw a better representation of my dolls than I could. I have, however, made them as sims.
I had to draw my doll at least once to help define his character a little bit more. I've also seen others do it as well, and as an artist it deems as a new challenge for me to try something new!
I have tried, a little. I've practiced drawing faces by looking at other people's dolls. I'm not very good and it's just practice, so I'd never share or show anyone.
I wish...I can't draw humans to save my life. I can see this thread inspiring a few more talented people to learn how to draw their dolls though.
I drew my first boy, as I wanted a base image to create some clothes for him, for some reason I have never considered drawing the following 6/7... I have a tendency to stick with portraits!
This is SUPER old butttt kind of? I doodle to get an idea of them NOW but I have one girl I'm basing off an old writing character I had. (This art is old and gross please excuse.) I really liked her design and was sad to no longer use her with how much art and love I put into her, so when it came to me to bring her to life this way, I just went with it. I should honestly either redo this piece or draw for her again. I never get the chance to do personal art for myself anymore lmao. Not finished pieces anyway.
Would love to draw my dolls as soon as they...and their clothes...arrive! They're based on characters from a book, so I'm really happy to see them brought to life to match my mental image~ >U<
I do! I'm not confident enough to do faceups yet so...drawing on paper is the way for me to go until I muster up that courage, aheh. I'd like to get to designing clothing for said dolls too, that could also be drawn as well before moving onto the next step in sewing O:
This is more of a light refresher on sketching and faces than anything. Guórén and Adhara's BJD incarnations versus how they ought to really look. Character versus Doll by Yela Gatchalian-David, on Flickr
I love drawing my characters all the time! I thought I’d use my doll as a drawing reference but I don’t lol. I think it was an excuse for me to buy her lol
I have drawn my venitu’s character before, but his character was a thing before I even realized I wanted to shell him into a doll. My art of his character helps me keep to his style of clothes, what I plan for his faceup in the future, etc.
I love using my doll as a reference guide! One of the reasons I got a bjd because of their nice mobility! I need to re-string my guy however ><
I got my dolls specifically to shell OCs that I've drawn, and part of the appeal of BJDs for me is having a nice physical model for drawing reference. I want to improve my semi-realistic style so they're very helpful to look at while sketching.
The twins are being made rn (I should get a shipping notice sometime end of this month or next, not sure) and the jester is my NEXT doll I need to order when I get the chance! I draw him a LOT and his clothes are going to need to be completely custom commissioned..... Yikesonbikes.... They're all family, ha.
I like drawing dolls but I usually only do it in a planning stage to test out sculpts/ideas. It can be a problem because sometimes it starts out that I just want to draw a lovely sculpt but then I get very attached to my idea for it ^.^'
I'm honestly really hoping that when my dolls arrive I'll be inspired enough to draw them. I haven't drawn in a very very long time, and honestly, I miss it.
I haven’t but I’ve been thinking about it! Sometimes I’m not sure what to draw and I think, well I can always use my doll :3
Suuuuch pretty drawings you guys are posting! I’ve been drawing my doll near obsessively since I ordered him in August. He actually started out as a written character, then I bought the doll and started drawing once I knew what he would look like. I would show you, buuuuut I have no idea how to insert pictures, lol.
I tend to develop a character for my doll via drawing over and over again... and refining my concept (hair, outfit, etc.) more and more.
Oh wow, the drawings you're all posting here are so gorgeous. i wasn't expecting this when I entered the thread... I think I MIGHT draw my doll when I have her, but I'm not sure. I don't think about her as a character!
I would love to see what you've drawn! I just use flickr like everyone else. (It's connected to a yahoo email account if you have one of those already). Click the share icon and use the option for an embedded picture (I think it tells you that you can use it for forums). Or if you share your pictures publicly on social media you could provide a link. ^_^ I got my doll (a Dollshe Grant) for the purpose of practicing drawing. Unfornutately, I've been so busy writing in Japanese that I don't draw much these days. But I finally got over the busiest time in my studies, all I have to do is study for my final so I might just have some free time I love this artist thread, you are all the people I've been looking for! @MadRatBird Your drawing is sooo cool. I'm surprised you don't like it. The detail, shading and flow are very nice. I hope you kept it. @AntarelNefertili I love your dolls. The make-up on our girl is stunning. I'm totally digging the sketch, the strength in your characters are just beautiful. I'm always in awe of artists that can capture a feeling. Well done.
Spoiler: Huge image? bjdconceptpaint by Minyuaa, on Flickr For my soon to be Soom Hyperon, I drew a concept for him when he arrives! But it's not official yet haha but hopefully it sticks!
Ooooh, thanks for the info! I’ll try it, but if that doesn’t work you can just find my art account on Insta under this same name. I really love the fact that you got the doll to practice drawing! That’s a big reason why I wanted one for so long. I needed someone small and cooperative to show me how clothes look in various positions. I’ve studied Japanese in school, too! I can’t wait to get back into it, but school is such a sticky situation at the moment. Good luck on your tests if you haven’t already taken them! *Edit, I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, but this pic absolutely will not appear for me. Sorryyyy. AHA, I got it! Lot of effort for a mediocre drawing, but at least I learned something. Spoiler: two
i always thought i would really want to draw my dolls! i draw basically every day, and love making up characters and the like--but i think if i were to draw one of my dolls it would need to look a whole lot like the actual doll face, and i must admit that doll facial proportions really do not fit my style ^^' especially the bigger eyes of MSDs, which i prefer. i find i have a really hard time with it and it never comes out looking right. but, i suppose it's not a huge deal; i don't really feel compelled to draw them. i think if i did, i would become more interested in the version of the doll's character that im drawing than the doll itself, you know? and i'd really like for that not to happen.
My drawings with dolls have a practical importance. This technical drawings for the selection of faceup.
Occasionally! Mostly other people's dolls rather than my own. My friend's boy, Krix is the doll I draw the most. He's so dramatic, and wears rather eccentric outfits, so he's especially fun to draw!
I like to draw some of my dolls! Mostly as doodles and quick sketches while I am at work, I am not talented enough for more than that.
I mostly draw dolls from pictures made by their companies since I couldn't buy them all, haha My greatest passion are the Souldoll doll's, I really love to draw/paint them! For example, Souldoll's Kulbahora is soo aesthetic and beautiful! My drawing: The original doll: Spoiler: two And my original doll Wycliff, a Souldoll's Joelle D: Spoiler: three Aaaand the other drawings posted here are so awesome! ♥♥
I chose my dolls specifically to act as figure and drapery models for a long-form romance comic I'm doing, so I spent a lot of time making sure their proportions and sculpts matched their characters. Here's some art of my characters, though I'm still waiting on the dolls to arrive. Spoiler: two Spoiler: three Spoiler: four Spoiler: five Spoiler: six
I draw the characters I want to make into dolls quite a lot. This is my sketch of my OC Minerva that ended up being shelled in my Impldoll Aurora just in the past month.
I'm missing my primary doll a lot, what with her body still stuck in transit. Drawing her character (and the other character shelled out in my male doll) seemed to be the only way I could decently bring them together.
