Do you draw your dolls?

Sep 2, 2016

    1. For those artists out here: do you draw your dolls (or their characters, as it were)? All of them? Only some? Do you try to make the drawing look juuuust like the doll, or does it vary? Post a picture if you've got one on-hand!

Bonus round, did they start as drawn characters and were shelled into dolls? I've forbidden myself from doing so but I'd love to hear others' stories c:

I don't have my boy quite yet, but I've already drawn him - he's a LUTS Avalanche. I've been trying to make him look like the real sculpt but it's proven a lot harder than I thought it would, heh.

(i'm talented at posting in the wrong forums so sorry in advance if this is wrong, mods ;w; i *did* search for duplicates and didnt find any)

    2. i did draw my doll once or twice ;-; its horrible i tried to make it look like the sculpt so it just came out in a weird style haha although i kinda like it it came out looking like a silent android or something?? ah idk im just rambling now.. he was never a drawn character though... i plan on making one of my oc's a doll tho so im excited ^-^

    3. I have also forbidden myself from shelling pre-existing characters (too many...). I imagine that I will. Mine lean towards realism, so I think that I would be more comfortable stylizing them.

    4. Your draw is awesome, I loved! Sometimes I draw my dolls, it looks like they are alive when I do it because I can see them with different expressions and poses

    5. I have drawn some of my dolls, but not often. I'm thinking of doing it more just because there are some things that can't be done with the dolls, like drastically changing their expression or certain kinds of clothes or poses! I try to catch a resemblance to the doll, but I don't slave over accuracy.

I have also forbidden myself from making dolls of drawn characters, that's too dangerous! ;D So the dolls I've drawn all originated as dolls.

    6. I couldn't draw a stick figure unless the stick figure I was trying draw was a scribble. Even then it would be a bad scribble.

    7. I don't draw very well, but I still draw my dolls. Usually they're weird chibis when I do. ^^; Christian is my favorite to draw, though.

      All my sketchpads are still in boxes, alas. So, I can't share any of my drawings. ;o;

    8. I suck at drawing, and rarely share them, but I love drawing all of my dolls. XunXun is my favorite to draw, cause I imagine he'd make a lot of facial expressions XD

    9. I have drawn all of my doll characters before with varying degrees of success. Most were characters created for their universe but I may shell some more long standing characters when my budget allows for more dolls.

This is my monster-ish boy, a Dollzone Virgil named Raico. He usually has pants but I wanted to do a male torso the day I drew this.

    10. I've got one drawing I did of Dahlia... I thought her up specifically to be my doll!
Why is everyone so good at drawing??? Wow

      • x 5

    11. Aaaaa, omg, look at her! That's super cuteee aaaa

Admittedly I did something similar! Though I guess by accident; now I'm stuck lamenting that I'll probably have to find a seamstress to custom-make his jacket....

    12. Sometimes I draw my boys XD

    13. I have drawn pictures of other people's dolls, just for fun. I wanted practice for drawing and I think getting a doll would really help me.

      • x 2
    14. @iVanniez
Aa, that's cool! :D I agree, I think having a doll would definitely help you practice more.

I must admit, I definitely plan to use my doll for pose reference. He may not be properly proportioned to a real human, nor will he be as flexible as one, but he fits my style decently - and he fits on a table much better than my roommate lolol.

    15. Yes! I agree. I'm not really into the whole 'real life human proportions.' anyway. Dolls are cuter.

    16. I always draw my dolls. Usually it's for character design and concepts, and I usually start right after I've bought a doll.
Here's the most recent set of sketches I've got:

    17. I should proooobably learn better proportions but it's just more interesting to exaggerate. Realistically, I should learn more about realism stuff and then stretch it more (just a better practice) but that's effort. P:

! oh my gosh, her hair is amazing! That's a smart idea too, drawing the doll to get a feel for them. I was going to try that, in theory, but I ended up getting stuck and fixated on what I had designed, oops. We'll see how it goes!

    18. I always try to doodle my dolls when I give them a new style, but I can't see to find my notebook right now (pretty worried! I hope I find it and can post some of them). They're all female until now and I have trouble drawing male characters, so I hope getting my new SD next week and trying to draw him will help in more than one way~
Plus it's very entertaining to be able to do things with them that you can't in real life! (and I'm not very good with photos)
I do love seeing all your drawings next to your dolls, so many art styles but they are all recognizable and I love seeing the small differences between real life and what we see in our heads concerning their personality, face expressions and style in general

    19. I'm not as good as some of you but all my Dolls who arrived or will arrive are based on Own Characters i draw before.
Its kinda hard to find a Doll who look acactly like the Character of yours. So jeah its Kinda hard and i think you have to deal with some differences. but i loved my OC's so much and i loved my Characters so much that i managed to find the Dolls who are perfect for them.

I'm not ready jet with the Dolls, but if so, i would like to share them with you :)

    20. Ahh, oh no, I hope you find it soon! :c
Having a guy around should totally help ovo Even though drawing from real people is the best option, a doll can still totally help.
I think that's part of the magic of drawing them; being able to bring aspects to them they can't achieve as static objects - and I agree, it's been so amazing seeing everyone's renditions of their dolls <3

You're ambitious! I would never be able to be so selective of dolls to shell characters (not to mention I definitely shouldn't, i have way too many)
I hope you do share your art sometime :D

    21. It's nice to see everyone's drawings of their dolls:D!

Do you draw your dolls (or their characters, as it were)? All of them? Only some? Do you try to make the drawing look juuuust like the doll, or does it vary? Post a picture if you've got one on-hand!

I draw my dolls and their characters. ^o^ I draw everyone and sometimes together even if some of them come from different settings eheh. For dolls that are coming, drawing them helps me developing their character. I don't make my drawing look the same as them the doll, I draw them in, I guess, my style~.

Here's a quick collage of some drawings of my doll Odilon :

Here's some drawings for the characters of doll I'm waiting for ^-^ :
      [IMG] [IMG]

I'm getting dolls for some of my pre-existing characters too. To choose them, I go with the feeling: do they feel like my character? They don't need to be exactly the same as my characters. :) I will only shell select fews. If I were to shell everyone, it'd be never ending LOL.

    22. I have 29 Characters and jeah ... What should i say?
Out of 29, the first 2 arrived jet and for 2 of them i'm waiting :)
If i get myself together, i would draw them new and uplode them, but you are warned! I'm not good at drawing at all :D

    23. Omigoshhh, i love your kiddos, aaa!! Especially the one in just gray tones, they're gorgeous <3

I would be in such deep trouble if I ever tried to shell my boys lmao, especially considering some of my favorites are very inhuman! I also have very strong mental images of what they ought to look like, so I'm not sure I'd ever be able to find something suitable even if I did let myself.

Ahahahaha, oh god I have um. Almost seventy *active* characters right now - that's not counting the ones I have in "storage" :'D

And yes please, I'd love to see them :D

    24. Ottilie was a draw character first. I can safely say all of the dolls I have and will have come from characters I have designed.
My wife draws using the doll as a model alot too. It was one of the many reasons we decided to invest in a male counterpart. Of course, he will be one of my male characters. I've already picked up the eyes and wigs for him. :D

    25. Ehehe, I must admit I'm looking forward to using my boy for some amount of reference too! Not really accurate to true human proportion nor flexibility, but regardless!
My boy has already developed a bit of his own personality and he's not even here yet! Even if I tried to shell characters I doubt I'd be able to get away with it ahaha. I'm too much of a sucker for personifying things.

    26. Thanks ^-^

Haha, also you have so many of them, you'd need a house just to store/expose them. (For their bodies, it'd be possible maybe if you modded them and made fantasy parts? I've never done modding tho, can't say for sure..)

    27. Wooow so much of this art is so good! ;3; But I wanted to join in! Mine is the opposite of drawing my doll since I literally got my first doll's head a couple of days ago aha! But he is doing to be designed around my OC of 9 years Michael, I'm really shoddy at keeping up with drawing and writing about my own characters, making them into dolls was kind of my way of having another way of portraying them? To keep me interested, so it wasn't just drawing or writing but photography and stuff too :3 but here are some of my drawings, in doll form Mike is a Switch Seowo~

    28. Sometimes I feel like I don't draw my dolls enough... but I do draw them-- Vince most of all. Usually just a bunch of sketches of potential future faceups, but sometimes I go all out and actually draw proper pictures of them.

And of course I have... way too many characters I draw who I'd love to shell as dolls.

Moz is a weird case, as I've drawn his character a thousand times, but his floating head self doesn't really resemble those drawings... he just had the sort of attitude that led me to make him that character-- or at least, that character's child/alternate self.

      • x 1
    29. HONESTLY yeah geez!

Pretending I hadn't banned myself from shelling them, I'm not sure how far modding would go with the less human kiddos ahaha;; The particular ones I was referencing would need nearly every single piece of the body to be modified, save for perhaps the pectoral section, and would need to be completely dyed :'D All of their limbs are longer than those of humans, and they have an extra muscle set in their abdomen - plus i have five of them, and one has the most impossible face while another has full body patterns.

Then there's also the dragon child, the fluffy kitty alien, and the giant pitch-black ones who jet fire. Those are just the difficult ones. :'D
It'd be quite the challenge, and I'm sure possible somehow, but probably a massive pain in the wallet xD

So your Mike is more of a drawn character turned doll! ehehe, very cool; it's gotta be neat to have him in your hands - or at least his head anyway! Creating a physical form for them is such a cool experience.

Aaaaaa look how cute he is! That's actually pretty smart; testing out faceups and such with drawings. I don't think I could quite manage, considering my style is so clear-cut, but I definitely intended to use drawings to help me out with wigs and clothes and such - I was just a bit too, ah, proactive about it xD

      • x 1
    30. Thank you!

I really dig your style-- and oh man, I feel you on being too proactive when it comes to character design... it's so easy to get carried away once you start!

    31. My dolls show my characters which are from written stories but I really enjoy drawing them. Most of them where first drawn and then shelled into a doll. I tend to only draw the main characters but I have a doll portfolio with profiles and I try to give everyone a drawn profile pic at least.

      Example:

      [IMG] vs.

Sometimes the drawings/the styles change according to the doll's style but I try to keep the drawn character as it is.

A collection of character portraits would look like this:

Missing a drawing of my DC Madeline (I didn't draw her since she's finished... I didn't want to add a pic of her old concept since it's outdated) but I added drawings of three of my incomings instead

Bigger and updated version can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zirkussoldat/29574596746/sizes/o/

    32. lmao oh my god YEAH tell me about it!

oh my god LOOK AT THEM ALL <3 Wow, your dedication is amazing!! :D I wish I had a full collection of matching portraits like that, that's stunning, I love them <3 Have you shelled all of your written characters, or do you plan to if you haven't yet?

I love your drawing of your little jester (clown?) boy too! It's mostly true to the doll but you gave him his own little spice-up in the artwork >w<

    33. @Crimson-Catalyst
Your collection of drawings is awesome as well :) I don't have shelled all my characters and I don't think I will have them all shelled some day. It's a huge expanding universe and there are too many (minor) characters @_@

    34. @Shchel uaa, thank you! I'm not nearly done with my little lineup collection but I hope to finish it someday c':

I know the feeling though! Characters never stop coming...

    35. I do draw them! Well, I've drawn two officially. I plan on drawing Frankie and finishing a half-done portrait of my honey's Bei Lie later when I have time. For now this is Zenith my LM Little Kliff and my wife's Xander (Doll Love Brian). I think I've posted Zenith's portrait on another thread.

    36. I drew many times as my homework, haha!

    37. Yup! It helps me flesh out what I want them to look like.

    38. Kinda.
When planning faceups and costumes etc I will usually doodle up a rough idea. I have a bunch of them somewhere waiting for me to have the money to order the dolls lol.

I'd like to have dolls of preexisting and thus predrawn characters but my vision of them is SO particular and SO specific that finding the right face sculpt and the right body plus the appropriate scale just... it's a headache. So i've decided it's probably better for my sanity not to do this and instead create a character with a specific sculpt in mind FIRST.

I'll probably get refined images of my crew up at some point, if only to clarify colours, wigs and faceups for myself.

    39. Interestingly, I've never felt the urge to draw my dolls, but I've drawn other people's dolls before. :0 Maybe I should give my own dolls a try!

    40. I wouldn't draw them, but I would commission others to draw them cx

    41. Yes, since he actually started out as a sketch---I'd say I've drawn him. Most of my planned dolls actually started out as sketches at some point. The amount of actual sketches for each doll varies from one to another; my main guy (and the only complete one atm) Tahmos has the most sketches done of him. Although Nira, Zelle and Valon (very WIP at the moment) all have a colored in versions, and Tahmos doesn't :sweat.

    42. :love:love
OMG I get goosebumps by just looking at your drawing (in a good way!) That facial expression is so amazing and accurate, it totally showed your doll's character/personality.

    43. I sketch out outfits before I make patterns and such. I also just love art in general, so I try to draw my doll as accurately as possible but change the character and faceup. It's really fun!

    45. I haven't drawn my doll yet, but I do plan on it in the future.

    46. I'm very much into drawing, though I can't say I do it good and obviously I lack the skill to show my pics to anyone... However I try to practice a lot and thus I'm searching for the ideal-to-draw doll for myself, which would be my model and muse ^^ I've tried to draw my fullset or complete character dolls but it's just a poor reflection of them that I'm able to make - it's better to use the photo camera instead of such drawing. I'm looking for the muse doll on whom I'd base the whole picture, adding the details that are not present in reality and building the drawing from my head around the doll.

I'd love to hear if someone had similar experience, what doll became you muse and how far did you go with it? :)

    47. gosh everyone is so talented, and its great to see dolls take on new life in art form! ✩

im new to this hobby and dont have have a full doll at the moment (just ordered one today though! very nerve-wracking!!), but im hoping that owning one will inspire me to create art again. i can see any dolls i may own being future muses and subjects for me!

      • x 1
    48. Drawing them is one of the main reason why I wanted to buy them in the first place. You can do so much with them and to me it's a lot easier to draw them in certain pose than make up the pose in my head.

    49. considering i originally purchased my dolls to help with my drawings i would say that yes i do draw them a lot lol ^-^
honestly though i draw them all the time not as their characters per say but i will have them pose as reference for when i am drawing which is something i do quite often ^-^
Granted i do draw them as their characters quite often ^-^ normally i draw their characters before i get the doll. It allows me to settle their character and envision how i want them to look. Sometimes the doll i get is to match the character i've been drawing for a while and sometimes the doll itself is the character it all depends and you never can tell lol ^-^

    50. My dolls are based upon already thought up characters. Before I get the dolls, I have, in most cases, drawn and wrote about the characters. Because of this, I do enjoy drawing the dolls, especially considering they pose the way I want my characters too, and kind of work like a guideline.

    51. For me personally, one of the biggest reasons I got a doll was because I CAN'T draw. I had a character in my head that I could never convey on paper, so I decided to go for a real life version and customize it as best I could from what I had in my head. It's been so enjoyable for me to hunt down and create the perfect look for my doll to look like my character in mind. ^^

    52. My friend has drawn my boy once :D that's about as close as I can get haha! I'm not good at drawing at all, but it's lovely seeing everyone's talent in this thread! :thumbup

    53. I tend to draw my dolls, especially when I'm trying to figure out who they are as a character! Most of the time it starts with the doll and then I'll draw out a character concept. I've tried the other way around, drawing characters and then shelling them into dolls, but it just doesn't work out most of the time.

    54. Yes, I totally draw my dolls! They're like little muses for me, and a lot of them were based on characters I already had been drawing for a while so it just makes sense.

    55. I love drawing my dolls! That's what I've been mostly working on and I'm wanting to start a story with them.

    56. Yes! Its fun drawing them because I make clothes for them it makes its easier to visualise the outcome :)

    57. I'm not sure why I'm not inclined to drawing my dolls...
I'm more inclined to drawing fanarts of certain fandoms.
Well, I guess it's probably because I draw less OCs these days, though I'd like to change that soon.

    58. I do. I'm doing it right now. When I should be doing other things....

    59. About the doll I wish to get, I just wrote her a story (in fact, I love wiriting and drawing) and when I draw her, I gladly post it in the forum
