My doll started out as a drawn character. It's part of the reason I chose a dollfie dream, since I tend to draw...things...in that style. Here she is below with the important bits covered. I'm hoping that being able to pose a doll of her will aid me in drawing, though it's not too important if it doesn't. It's mostly so I can actually play with her and dress her up. >w<
Goodness no! I used to be able to draw half-decently but gave up. Now my skills have greatly atrophied and I can draw little more than a stick figure.
The latest addition to my crew has started out as a drawing (please ignore the back to front hand, I only noticed after colouring :T). Originally she was gonna be a FL Pong Pong, hence the cute smile, but I've since put another doll on layaway to shell into my little pastry chef I actually find it easier to draw them first and then find a sculpt to match, I can't seem to draw my crew very well, even if I have their head right in front of me (except Dimitri, weirdly enough, as he's just a floating head :/)
I've drawn my dolls a few times. My first has been drawn after she was already with me, while I've tried to draw the others before they got here. Mostly it was to get an idea of how they were going to be, both for face up, clothes and character. I had one be drawn by someone else, too. ^_^
Oh man, this is a good question! My dolls are currently incomplete, but they were inspired BY their original illustrated counterparts. The projects for them are bigger than I expected, especially since they're my first BJDs, and they're both SD Luts Arwens. Lol...
I guess this is more out of curiosity but do you guys draw your dolls in addition to everything else you do? :0c Do you prefer to capture their sculpt likeness accurately or do you prefer to draw them more like how you imagine your character? And do you tend to draw them as dolls or as people? I've recently taken a few shots at painting a few of my dolls and gosh it's so difficult to capture their likeness. I keep having to decide if I want to be true to what I see in life or be more true to realistic human anatomy and I've been wondering if anyone else runs into the same issues.
I have old photos I have drawn of the OC's that I shelled into BJD's. I am very out of practice in drawing, but I did love to make any art with my boys. I always drew them as humans. I have not drawn them since owning BJD's of them.
I draw them as characters, my style right now is more on cute territory so it isn't "realistic". I think I'm very influenced by college, were we were taught no art is actually realistic. The artist is always doing their vision of realism/beauty and that you actually need to translate it on symbols to represent what is there stead of drawing how it is. So I don't worry much about it, I think I'm more worried about the feeling and expression I want it to have lately. And how I can make it more dynamic to show who the character is. But is that thing, test it out and see what makes you happy and satisfied. There's no right and wrong about it.
I will draw the characters that I have made for my dolls here and there. I run into the problem of there being a distinct difference in the drawing as opposed to their physical shells, but I usually just roll with it as long as the resemblence is there
Yes. Every day. People are probably tired of looking at them by now XD But I draw the characters the dolls represent, not as actual dolls.
I actually love your characters and look forward to all of your new drawings of them! :X But to answer the original question; I sketch my dolls often as several of them are based on characters that I had previously. The sketches tend not to be doll-like though.
I've sketched my doll both as doll and as character. I like drawing him as character a bit more because he can do more things that his engineering simply doesn't allow. It's fun to draw him as a doll, though - particularly when I'm having fun thinking about how he works. When I was planning his face-up, I sketched him quite a lot to get the image I had in my mind to be something I could easily repeat. I'm sure I'll use the same process with my second doll, too.
Actually, part of the reason I got into dolls was to get a life-like reference to better draw my characters. I've sadly only had time for some light sketching and started a painting I haven't touched in months, but I hope to get back to it when I have more time. For anyone who wishes to better their artwork in terms of achieving realism, I think BJDs are a great figure study. You can practice with different lighting on your doll or take them outside and do a series of photos to paint a full composition. I really think they're a great artistic tool. In terms of real anatomy vs. BJD anatomy, some doll makers have more realistic proportions than others and when referencing those, I feel a more human-looking illustration is the result. Most BJD artwork seems to typically end up looking like anime or cartoon characters, which I think is fine since I enjoy those styles.
I try not to let my dolls dictate how I draw. Since the characters came first, they take priority on page as opposed to what sculpt, body or features they get as a doll. But I try as hard as possible to match the doll to the concept plus I draw very stylized so I think there's liberty for differences.
Although I love drawing and am an artist I don't draw my dolls. I don't feel the need or desire to, they spark many different kinds of inspiration in me to create art but drawing appears not to be one I have thought about having some art of them commissioned but am not quite sure what I want or who I want to commission for it
I have drawn a few pictures of my dolls. I like drawing more monster/creature/non-human in anime or cartoon style (Pokemon/Digimon/Disney animals, for example), so human drawings are not my favorite to draw but I do occassionally. Most of my dolls were picked for their sculpt because I thought they were beautiful so I tend to draw the doll itself, but I do have a couple that were characters to begin with and I have drawn them in both "styles" so to speak, as both doll and character.
DO I? Ahem. I actually don't draw/paint them very often. Mostly because I find them quite difficult to draw compared to photo references--they're just stylised enough to throw me off. Also because I got my dolls more to work on sewing/crafting projects and less as art references.
Wow, she's *gorgeous*. It's always interesting to see how the owner sees the doll. I draw mine too but only when I'm bored during the lectures, so it's on my notebook's margins xD I usually away a dol or have a plan for some clothes designs and then I do it My two Draytons are actually on my avatar. Those ar pastels and watercolours on a wooden box lid
Here's that stylized look I mentioned. I sketched these character portraits in January and was really unhappy that my dolls weren't matching their drawn versions. So I dedicated a huge chunk of this year to fixing that via new faceups and learning to make my own wigs.
I draw my dolls to help myself plan future outfits or designs for them. My new project is a lot of this like here I did a doodle to get a better idea of what I wanted his faceup to look like: But I also drew a lot of art of Okita back in the day. It's all on my old hard drive and I haven't done any lately because I haven't been feeling so inspire to work on him. I imagine I'll be doing more art of the new boy though because I need to plan out clothes for him!
I draw my dolls all the time! Sometimes it's just for the pose for something else, and other times it's because I wanted to draw them! I also draw out my dolls when I'm planning a new dress or clothing piece I've come up with, so that I can get an idea of how it would look.
I'm figuring out how I want to style my two current dolls, so I find myself doodling them at work from time to time! I do plan on shelling some of my characters in the future, so of course i'll draw them excessively.
My character was the first to come to my and I bought my doll when I realized there was a degree of resemblance. This is more or less a colored sketch/ experiment of Bruna before I went and bought my DC Carol. The proportions are more extreme that I would like but it works out all the same.
I've drawn my doll before but poorly lol. Just when I was in class bored, I wish I was better at it and had more time to perfect my skills. I hired pintsizedpalace to draw him for me It was cute. I started thinking about a character for him when I started wanting his sculpt. I didn't have that character before hand.
I haven't drawn my doll yet. I only have the one that I bought at the same time my best friend bought his. Actually part of the intent of getting my doll was to help with drawing my ocs. To visualize a bit better how cloth drapes on the form and as another creative outlet. I quite like to sew and sculpt so he (My doll honestly doesn't have a name yet... I haven't come up with one for him. ^^; ) gives me plenty of things to work on. In fact I just picked up the materials to make him a new wig based off the character that's my icon.
I don't, because I can't draw If I could, though, I'd probably be drawing them all the time. hahaha is it bad that I keep hoping that one or more of my dolls will become well-known enough for someone to draw fan art of them? Let me just say, I'd also be making fan art of other people's dolls if I had the skills for art.
I draw my dolls as sculpts, but I don't draw their characters. I have such a difficult time with the ideas I already have for them already, that drawing them is frustrating. It only makes it harder to shell them. I end up with new hair, new clothes, new ideas that I can't really recreate outside of art.
Always! they're original character before they're dolls therefore its design was created much earlier
I definitely draw my dolls! I like to use them as drawing references and it gives me good idea for the characters I want them to be. This is a drawing of my lillycat Ellana I did!
My doll is a shell of an OC of mine, which I've been drawing for a few years now, so I'd say the answer is yes! I feel like it'd be cheating to post any of my older pics though, so I'll come back when I have drawings of him in his doll design I pretty much made a new design for his doll form (which I'm going to end up canonizing!), and I'm very excited to illustrate it. My art style isn't very realistic ... but I kind of got a doll I thought would best represent my art style anyway, so realism isn't a problem ^^
Very nice girl! Oh, then I will show my last drawing, too. I painted the Lord from «The gray house» book, but Saint from Dollshe was used as a reference.
I always want to draw or paint my dolls but I haven't really done much of it. However I did this painting featuring one of my dolls and I like it pretty well. I tried to render her with a general likeness to her face and body sculpt without being overly fixated on an exact portrait, letting her be more in my own style.
I draw mine out too! I think my girl has a specific personality and likes/dislikes when I dress her, so it's easy to see her in my mind as an OC
I do, though Ian turned out to be a weird blend -- I got inspired by his sculpt first, but then I made his character before he even got to me. It's the same with his friends and family, as well. And as Ian's style in his physical form evolves, so does the way I draw his character form, and vice versa. Like, compare the way I first drew him to the way I most recently drew him. Spoiler: First drawing Spoiler: Recent drawing
This drawing shows temperament of doll. Very cute! (When I saw a pic I thought that this character is very headstrong).
I personally can't draw but I know that once my boy comes in, I'm definitely going to commission my roommate.
I haven't done a full art piece of him but I've been doodling my doll a lot! Even before I had actually received him I had been doodling him in my spare time. I find it helps me develop his character!
I just drew my new, and first ever, doll yesterday! I'll be getting her soon and I'm so excited. She's a Fairyland MNF Sirrca! This is the character design I have for her.
Yup, I draw my dolls! I don't have pictures with me at the moment, but I love drawing them. They're an important part of my life, afterall. I also draw other people's dolls, too. I really like the aesthetic and body proportions of BJDs, so I incorporate some of its aspects into my art as they're hugely inspirational.
I don't have my doll yet but I've already drawn her bc i just can't wait! I've used photos of other peoples bjd's for drawing reference many times so I can't wait to finally get my first doll so I can make my own reference photos
I have been actually considering drawing my BJD. It's just I still have to refine her clothing and outfit first. For the time being my BJD idea has been mostly on SL and Evernote for the most part. Been thinking about just making a small manga.
I just recently finished a piece that's meant to be showcased as a print. They're my dolls' characters as they really are, and they have actual outfits that are similar. Obviously not what they're wearing on the photo on the right. Adhara and Guoren in "Beginnings" by Yela Gatchalian-David, on Flickr
I wish I could. I think I have to stick to photographs, though, I've never been very good at drawing.
I do, to a degree. The dolls I have are based on characters that I draw/have drawn anyway. The doll I bought on impulse I haven't drawn though because I still haven't figured out his character... I haven't connected to him and am not really motivated to work on him further.
Oh my gosh, I love your doll! What head and body is that? Ive never seen a smiling wittle horned head before! Beautiful art btw
I haven't been able to get my doll(s) yet, but most of them will be shells of drawn characters. There is at least one planned that is just going to be her own character though, so reversing the process will be fun.
