Do you collect furniture/props or room settings for your dolls??

Oct 15, 2008

    1. Well, I do not really collect them. I intend to have a diorama setup on a pasting table. I am planning to do a living room set, quite old-fashioned with some velvety sofas and a nice cupboard. I have collected several sofas, which need to be modified a bit (they are a tad too low), otherwise I am not really quite set what my crew needs. But if I like something and it does not cost too much, I will get it. Though I have big problems finding a nice table for 70 cm guys and 62 cm ladies.

Right now, I do that pretty spontaneously, but that may change in the future. When that big table is set up.

    2. I have quite a bit of doll furniture. A table and chair set, a couple of couches, a custom made oak armoire, a tall chest of drawers, a couple of occasional tables, a rocking chair, two benches, well, lots of chairs really, vases of flowers, really, the only thing I don't have for them is a bed. I want an Egyptian throne for them too, this and a bed I guess I will have to make. I collect tea sets for them too, my most recent score was an antique cloisonné set., with blue dragons , so pretty!

    3. I find it hard to resist furniture and props in the right scale for my dolls so I have a plethora of props I've made or bought and some furniture I've made and some purchased. I'm always on the search for new stuff or ideas.

    4. I have a whole room of props and most can't even be seen unless you open a bin, or pull on a drawer. But I have lots and lots of stuff from furniture to fake food.

    5. @animemom WOW! What an awesome doll heaven! I now have a new goal in life- this!

I really love the idea of having a whole world where my dolls can have everything! I'm working on making a modern bedroom form my SD girl, and after that I'll be working on a wizard study for my SID boy :) I make a lot, but I love finding treasures in thrift stores- mostly boxes, baskets, bottles, and trunks- and I'm really looking forward to the day their rooms are fleshed out!

    6. Thanks, the family had lived in a home where we added four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Although we lost a downstairs bedroom as it was where the stairs had to go. But then after only four years in it hubby got a job offer that required us to move. I was getting out of dolls then and had a horse, so for me it was important to get a barn and pasture. We were lucky and found a three bedroom and three bathroom house with two bonus rooms in basement. When I got out of horses and back into dolls the extra room was mine. Now been in basement for ten years and three months.

    7. not really, most of the time i want to make them my self 'cause i want my things to be uniquely mine alone.

    8. Yes definitely! I have all MSD and SD dolls right now so it's hard to find the money and space for big furniture sometimes, but it's worth it to me, I just love making a little world for them! Right now I have stuff from the online store DollMarket, a local thrift store, MyTwinn, and from a con. There's a lot of American Girl stuff I want but they're so pricey haha. I also love collecting little props so I have a lot of random little things like books and food items. Cons are great places to pick that stuff up, that's where I got most of my props and like I said, some of my furniture!

    9. I find it very difficult to find suitably scaled furniture for my SD-sized gang.

1/3 doesn't work as that assumes that they are adults, and my SD-sized gang are mostly children, so 1/3 is too small when I need it to be big enough to look like adlult sized furniture being used by children. I need it to be closer to 1/2 scale than 1/3, I suppose - assuming a 2ft doll is the quivalent of a 4ft child etc.... and pieces of that scale would take up a lot of space.

I have a few dining-style chairs that work but so far all the other chairs and tables I've found work better for child MSD/1/4 dolls.

    10. I really love seeing the rooms people design for their dolls. I don't have enough room sadly. I mostly have chairs and smaller props.

    11. I would love to find a 1/3 sofa for my future dolls, but anything beyond that I think would take up way too much space

    12. I wouldn't have the room for any furniture or props, but that's fine with me. That's not so much my thing, compared to just having the dolls themselves and making them clothes and stuff. :)

    13. I eventually plan to have a room or area dedicated to dolls for indoor photoshoot purposes, with authentic set pieces. Amazing photos are what got me interested in this hobby, and I'd love to keep that chain going

    14. I don't have a "doll house" or "doll room" per se since they all "live" in my cabinet LOL. But I do collect doll furniture and props for photo-taking! I recently bought an oriental style chair which cost me quite a bit including shipping, but I've yet to take photos of it yet. To be very honest I don't have space anymore for their stuff, especially for all the SD scale furniture but shopping for the dolls is really addictive! (can't stop)

    15. I don't have any furniture besides one 1/3 sized chair, but it's too big for my SD sized dolls, it's more like an uncle size. So I'm really on the lookout for SD sized sofas or benches right now that don't cost an arm and a leg. It's not so easy to find modern 1/3 sized stuff, I don't like the old fashioned 50s style you mostly get here too much.

    16. miniatures/set building was the interest that led me to BJDs! right now i have a dollmore bed and a cute little living room set i found at ikea for my mature tiny (and toooons of little rement/miscellaneous minis lol) i really want to make her a little itabeya style roombox but the bookshelf i use for display isn't super big :,(

    17. I really love doll furniture, however I've never been able to find any that are suitably sized. Not that I have the room for furniture, but I can always dream!

    18. I would love to build a diorama for my dolls, but maybe I should just get a very long sofa for them to sit on because I want my diorama to be sophisticated and probably not have enough funds for it.

So far I have got a clothing rack and shelves to put my doll stuff and that's it.

    19. oh! I also make my own set pieces, I use scrapbooking paper glued on to either hard cardboard or the type of thick thick thick cardstock you need a stanley knife to cut. lately Kaiser Craft has come out with some great floor pages as well so now I have floors to go with my walls

    20. I buy things here and there. Premade stuff atm.

One day there will be a doll armoire with multiple environments inside, but for now, I'm content to just collect the items.

    21. I've found that American Girl doll items work for my 1/3 dolls. I have an old AG wardrobe from when I was a little girl- I repainted it and it works great for shirts, coats, etc. I'm in the process of making a dresser for my dolls and I'm using "dollhouse wood" aka Balsa wood. I used the same wood to make my 1/3 bjd headboard. I've found great stuff at yard sales, thrift shops, and even the dollar store. Another thing I've done is if a friends kids have something little that I think could work as a prop, I'll ask to borrow it and make a mold of it. :thumbup

    22. Teddy bear/porcelain doll chairs, jewelry boxes and curio shelves have taken over my craft room to act as BJD furniture. I made a few furniture pieces but most consist of other items I bought and modified. It's addicting collecting these large props but not so great when you don't have the space for it. Which is me. :sweat I set the furniture out and arrange a setting to look like a room and pose my dolls for pictures. It's always challenging and fun!

    23. Almost all of my doll props and furniture are perfect 1/3 scale. I have a sofa that folds out into a bed, a rocking chair, a Windsor chair, a dining table with two chairs, a couple of shabby chic arm chairs, a custom made oak armoire, a round marble topped table, an oak dresser, lots of flower vases, miniature printed books, lots of really nice quality tea sets, including one in sterling silver, and an antique cloisonné one with blue dragons on it, a mother of pearl jewelry chest, silverware, a gun collection, a set of wine glasses, and oodles of doll food, all of my dollies own real jewelry: sapphires in gold, silver and moonstones, and one girl has , yes, a ruby glued into her belly button! LOL! I like to spoil my dollies!

    24. Yes!
Now that I have room to give my dolls their own space they have a bedroom full of props. Some things I have made (like their bed, it's made from 3 Daiso diskracks, washi tape, batting and felt) but most of it is gifts or things that I've found randomly that seem like they would be good doll props (like their table, stuffed toys and food props)

    25. I have browsed many places on the internet to find doll furniture and props, but all I could find is just 1/6 stuff. So, I plan on buying materials from off of Taobao and just make some furniture of my own. I am very excited to be making doll furniture and props. One day, I'll make some doll clothing, but that'll be one day.. I am still afraid of holding a needle... I always seem to stab my finger with it. 0_0

    26. OMG THAT LOOKS SO AMAZING!
THE RILAKUMA STUFF ARE SO CUTE! >.<
I also really love the table and the cake. :3

    27. Yup :) Always on a lookout for doll furniture! Thrift stores are great for accessories and pieces. I've seen some people also do some pretty amazing stuff with sculpting clay!

    28. Thank you so much! :whee:
Those little tables were all over stationary stores here for a while (they might still be, I just haven't checked), I have no clue what they're actually for but they make a really nice doll prop
Good luck on your dolly room crafting adventures, I'm sure it'll turn out awesome~

    29. Yes! I have a whole diorama showing the room of my main girl (MSD).
She has a bed with pillow, cushions, mattress más quilt made by me, a desk (which wasn't originally a desk but kind of a jewelry box) with a little lamp and a puff as chair, wardrobe, mirror, posters in the walls and a chest to keep her secret stuff.
I do not use it a lot because it is located upstairs in the attic and I'm too lazy to go there xD

    30. I was just in the dollar store and found a pack of three mini tin cans for $1.50.

I plan on decorating them one day. Maybe at around Christmas time or Easter. I'll leave it in my storage box. I stood there in front of it and was like "should I get it? I don't even own a bjd. Maybe I should get it when I finally get my bjd. But what if they don't restock it once they're gone?" XD

And sorry for the ugly background. >.<

    31. Right now my boys have a nice oriental rug remnant they sit on. Sadly my current apartment is a little too small for real doll furniture, but my boyfriend and I are hoping to move into a place with an extra bedroom next year and we already discussed the desire to use it as a crafting/doll room. Fingers crossed it actually works out because honestly I really would love to buy/make some nice doll furniture and backdrops. They deserve more than a rug....:sorry

    32. Yup! I don't even own a doll yet and I'm already collecting props  I have so many background ideas so my room is now full of miscellaneous items like masquerade masks, 1/6 sized cabinets, and clock faces.

    33. My two main characters have rooms, but I don't plan on anymore rooms for the other dolls! They will stand on display!

    34. i started to make a garden, but i soon realized i didnt have the room for a 1/3 scale. i make pieces, but i keep to the shakespearian idea. i dont need an entire setting. just a clear area with a few well done props. im going to try to do a folding backdrop screen, but i havent gotten to it yet.

    35. I collect furniture and some props but then have nowhere to put it!! :( I really want a doll cabinet with shelf 'rooms' but haven't found what I want yet.

    36. @Chehime I was just at IKEA yesterday and they have some really awesome pieces that work for "room shelves" in any size! I collect 1/3, so I was eyeballing some wardrobe pieces that would have been big enough for 3 or 4 different rooms, and some of them had sliding doors, so you could cover them up easily if you needed to!

    37. Awesome! I will have to haul my butt to Portland one of these days! And I would like to keep light out, so the doors sound perfect!

    38. Hobby lobby has a ton of stuff for my Tiny Delf and she usually is the one who collects the most stuff. My other girl shares her bed with upcoming dolly friends :)

    39. I have a few bar stools for my 72cm-75cm guys and simple props like glasses, beer cups and smokes. My realpuki will settle into his new home that is fully furnished with tiffany lamps, dressers, rockin chair, table and chairs and such lol If I can find the room I might make some folding rooms but I also collect action figures so my space is getting limited if I want to keep displaying :...(

    40. Once I wanted to make a fully firnished roombox for my dolls but I do not have enough space. But still I collect some stuff for photoshoots - I have some furniture like chai, armchair etc. and of course lots of tiny things like food made of polymer clay, some glasses, tea cups and dishes. And of course a doll-sized New Year tree with tiny XMas gifts ^_^

    41. I have a whole room that I have filled with doll rooms. It started years before my first BJD arrived, Most are filled with OT dolls, but the BJDs have rooms now, also.

    42. So far I have a couple of American Girl and Our Generation furniture for my minifees. The scale is pretty good, furniture wise, but the props are out of proportion a bit. Some are a hit, others a major miss. but I don't have a set place for their rooms or anything. And I mostly keep the furniture in boxes in my closet.

    43. I just love collecting different style of chair for my girls. And now I have more chair than my girls orzzzz

    44. I have a chaise lounge and to dressers for my MSD. I would love to make him a box room.

    45. I really like to find stuffs for my doll shelf, i found little lamps and small chairs and tables.

    46. :dance:danceyes l am not the only one that loves finding bjd furniture/props.

Right now I am trying to figure out what size of furniture would fit a 35cm bjd.

    47. Ooo I just bought my crew a sofa. Its pretty big and can possibly fit 5, 65cm dolls in. I'm just glad I had enough space in my wardrobe if not that thing gotta go. I was also looking at getting them a bed set. But it'll be too big for my room. Maybe in the future

    48. I look all over from antique shops, to craft stores and even Home Goods and Michaels. Here is my album on Flickr of the many things in my room as well as my room set up for my girl.

If anyone here can't see photos PM me your email address and I will send you the latest photos I took in my room.

For example, couch, IKEA small dog bed, cabinet from Marshalls, blankets and cushions I made, and the props range from craft stores to Amazon.

    49. I would like to get in the future but for now , I do not have anything .

    50. I've got two SD-sized chairs and a table which I bought second-hand and two cupboards from a local household store. I've also got a book-case which was sold along with the mini books but it's in my parents' place now. I'd really like to make at least doll corners in the future, not sure about rooms as I mainly own SDs.

    51. Same here. I want to create two different dioramas, and have been collecting the small accessories for years, but hadn't aquired any actual furniture until now. I just bought the American Girl roll Top Desk and swivel chair. My plan is to create an office or study for my MSDs. I also have items to make a child's bedroom for my YOSds, but that is farther down the road.
Where I live now, there is no space for displaying dolls properly or for dioramas.

    52. I have several vignettes for my dolls scattered throughout my home. I look upon them as art installations, and they can be anything from a “room” atop a dresser or on top of my roll top desk, or a larger designated room in a big piece of furniture with shelves, to a fun attic display on an oversized nightstand for my tinies. Just anywhere they can become a fun part of my general decor and look good while doing it.:) For furniture, I’ve picked up pieces from thrift stores, bought sofas and accessories right here in the marketplace, made things by cobbling together interesting bits and pieces I’ve had laying around, made rugs by cutting up small tapestries, and purchased some key American Girl pieces from the company. For my “hat shop” I had my husband put together some dowels with wooden bases and discarded string-light globes to make hat stands. One of the dolls in my plant conservatory sits atop a small stack of vintage gardening books. Basically, when it comes to furnishings, I’m always open to anything and everything that can explain and enhance my doll’s characters…their personalities are emulated through the rooms.

    53. I didn't buy furtinures for my dolls, however, when I was young, I tried to make furniture for them.

    54. I'm afraid I am a hoarder of bjd furniture and props. I like realistic life-like photos, so...

      • x 1
    55. I have enough furniture and props to make multiple dioramas. I'm trying to rein it in, as my storage space is finite.

    56. I currently don't have any furniture for my SD size girls, but I want some so bad! I want to make them a little walk in closet!

    57. I have been spoiling my resin children with mini toys. I also got the Our Generation Hot Chocolate booth and kinda want a couple other playsets. I kinda want to make a couple couches as well so they have somewhere to sit when at my desk. I don't really have space for big sets though....

For my Ob11 sized BJDs, I've made a couple little diorama sets and have scaled up D&D tabletop mini furniture models and printed them in their size.

I also made a brick wall backdrop, then when I was on my last two weeks at my old work location before transferring to a location closer to where I live, I brought the backdrop into work with a bunch of markers and stickers, and encouraged my co-workers there to vandalize my wall (within a few content guidelines). xD I mostly use it when I just want to take a quick photo of an outfit I made or something.

    58. I'm absolutely obsessed with collecting props, it might just be like 30% of the appeal of the doll hobby to me tbh! I love miniature things in general and finding cool scaled (or almost-in-scale) props is SO satisfying.

Generally it's also super helpful for background decor when doing doll photoshoots too, that's my main reason for collecting doll props and furniture.

      • x 2
    59. The only props I would really like to get is a table and a few chairs/sofa. I have no idea where I would find 1/4 sized furniture so I just kind of keep an eye open at thrift stores for anything that could be repurposed into doll furniture. :3nodding:

    60. I'm not interested in building "rooms" or dioramas at the moment, however, I do enjoy collecting props and own some 1/3 furniture. I enjoy doing themed photoshoots and building outfits from different pieces, so props are a fun part of putting that all together.
