Do you collect furniture/props or room settings for your dolls??

Oct 15, 2008

    1. I am curious here, and am learning so much about the world of BJD's thank you all for this wonderful forum. I'm so glad my friend recommended me browsing here to pick up some knowledge.

I've browsed various blogs and ingenious room scenes where people actually have a cabinet or room scene set up as a dollhouse for their BJD's - no matter what the size- and it intrigues me. As a huge collector of dollhouses, doing a dollhouse or set of rooms in this scale is really fascinating, from a miniature standpoint! I recently got into 1/6 scale and found the amount of detail challenging to achieve to make it look 'real'....

So the question is- what sources do you use to collect furniture for your dolls? Wallpaper, trims, pillows, etc. Do you make your own, or buy what is available? For instance, I cannot sew very well, so I buy alot of dolly clothing. Do you have a permanent place set up for your room settings, and do your dollies have stories?

One of my reasons for asking is I know, absolutely know, my doll will want furniture- so if she /he is big, I will probably be buying some American girl furniture, since that seems to be some really nice quality furniture. I was lucky recently to buy some chairs that are Victorian, from an estate sale, that look good with my big doll I display in my dining room- and she is about 24 inches tall, not a BJD though.

    2. Well, I started to, but it just got out of hand, and I ended up with no room., although I can see the appeal to do that, I find with SD sized dolls it's not really practical.

    3. I go to antique shops and goodwill to buy doll furniture! You get some really neat stuff for really good prices! Most of the furniture I have now is made of wicker except for one table... it seems to be the only type of furniture I can find lately:sweat

    4. But if you can make a room for your doll somewhere, I think its definetley worth it. It really is fun to look for ways to decorate it and to personalize it. it adds to the dolls character!

    5. I said I would never do it, and now I've got a small cabinet / chair thing sitting in Shin's shelf. Space is extramly limited, so I'm keeping to two per doll, although they both have to be able to hold clothes and accessories.

    6. No, I just don't have the space for any real dollhouse-ness.... I have a small apartment & big dolls. Dolls take priority over settings. But I would love to have real settings: whole rooms, appliances, interior design, wall textures, everything! Like Mercy's photostories; she is Teh Ultimate 1/3 Shopper. :abow: jmkmini's 1/4-scale worlds, and Tinoose's Tiny worlds, are also incredible feats of trompe l'oeil via props.

Most of my boys do get good scale-sized chairs & sofas to sit on, however. Furniture makes them take up LESS room than they would if they just sprawled on a shelf. The 60cm+ tall boys are mostly leg; so you can fit more of them together if you get those long legs folded out of the way. I'm still seeking a chair high enough for Mecha Angel, whose legs are seventy miles long... I hear I should seek out old salesmen's samples from antique-markets & fleamarkets. Others I know go to American Girl for ~1/3 settings and furniture.

And I DO collect small accessories/props/tchotchkes: things like weapons, cards, watches, cocktails, etc. They come from anywhere... junk-shoppes, hobby stores, keychains, other dolls, etc. They're easy to store and transport, and they're irresistible. They also add a LOT of realism & life to the even most rudimentary photoshow, even when shot against the backdrop of a bookcase-wall or fabric drape.

I've just bought big shelves from Ikea, so some of the boys will be moving into their own "dorms" next to my books-- even if they aren't the fullsized rooms/settings I would like. They'll have to sprawl on beanbags until I get more chairs, but now there's no reason NOT to decorate each one. Postcards, card-sized flyers, & band stickers make great rock-posters for dolls. Samir & Stavros already seem to be fans of the Damned, Impaled, and Ludicra, because those were the smallest flyers I had lying around... XD

    7. Currently, when I've a little 'free' cash, I go around second hand stores, yardsales (though the season for them is now over) to specifically look for dolly sized furniture and props for my current boy and future girls and boy. I'm going to wind up with a big, plastic tub that I'll keep it all in until I have room for, or a need for it. I've a small living room I can use for photostories and photoshoots indoors, but it's also where my son plays a lot, so I can't leave my doll things out or they go missing. So far I've picked up some wicker stuff, some basket style plant holders that I need to make cushions for, some small, wooden candle holders, a tiny vase (though it's a rather LARGE vase for my 1/4 boy!) and some metal candleholders and metal shower 'baskets' that I'll be making stone or glass tabletops for to use as coffee and end tables. I've also found some great wooden furniture...but wasn't about to pay the price for the stuff, since I can have my dad show me how to use the tools (which he has) to make such things myself with scrapwood from his haunted house.

So...in short...no, I haven't got a space for permanent setup of my doll (soon to be dolls, I hope!) as a set of doll sized rooms, or a house, but I DO still collect all the furniture and props for such a thing, and keep them tucked away until I need them for a shoot or photostory, until I can get into a larger house where I can set aside room just for my dolls and their stuff.

    8. Hahah!

I wasn't searching for any furniture exactly, but ended up buying a chair from the marketplace as it was being sold for a great price and was in the UK, too (always a bonus!). I'm really pleased I got it now, since she looks so cute in it ^_^

She also did have a pillow that I bought at a recent convention. Unfortunately I left said pillow at said convention and now she is pillow-less and sadder because of that. (I should sew my own).

I like having props and stuff ... even just a few of them. I really like mini things ^x^

I would scour eBay perhaps, for more unobvious items? Or keep an eye on the marketplace here :)

    9. I don't have much room at home but I do collect enough to make them a living room setting. I have couches, wallpaper even a working lamp, and other little extras. Antique stores are good for this.

    10. I don't really have any real furniture for my doll I always want to spend money on clothes wigs and other dolls but I did make him a bed/carrying case out of a quillow (quilt/pillow) that I made in Jr High.

    11. Having a collection of doll-sized furniture is something that's on my list of things to do. Really I don't have much stuff but I'm always on the lookout for chairs, tables, dressers, etc that are doll-sized. I've accumulated a lot of little 1/3 scale props like food and such but not much of anything furniture-wise. My boys just sit happily on their space on the shelf for now. c:

    12. Frankly I would love to collect furniture and props/room settings for my dolls, if only I had the room. I current have one very large bench and a chair for SD, and a few smaller bed/chairs for tinies, and that alone takes up a lot of room I don't really have. ^^;; But I would love to make them all at least one proper room.

    13. I love props and set-pieces, and my crew have about a ton of them... but I don't have any permanent rooms set up for them. Instead, I use two spaces for sort-of seasonal display settings that I change every couple of months. That way, I get to play with all of the miniature "toys" we've picked up over the last few years, without the guys and their stuff taking over my entire house. Which they would, if I let them.

When I switch over from one set-up to the next, I store the unused props and furniture in rubbermaid boxes in my upstairs closet. That keeps them out of the way and safe from cats.

The most numerous props we have for the 1/3-scale dolls and their 1/4-scale kids are musical instruments (With several musicians and a resident composer in the crew, that was kind-of inevitable.), archaic weapons, Asian-styled set pieces, and kitchen items. (Crane's fault, those. My little resin Iron Chef has somehow ended up with enough cooking gear to set up his own Kitchen Stadium. :doh)

The two Banjis, being very close to 1/12-scale are flat-out spoiled. They have their own house. :| I made them a shadowbox-style dollhouse, and stocked it with regular dollhouse miniatures, which I love, Re-ment goodies and all sorts of odd little things, from Mushi's fridge-magnet moon lute to Issun's tengu fan, which started out as a cell-phone charm.

I went into Ross the other day, looking for cheap towels to use for car-washing, and the two of them ended up with a near-perfectly scaled vintage race-car and red triplane. They're way too stinkin' easy to find "toys" for. o_O

    14. I really can't indulge the big ones much because my house is very small. I do have a chaise and a table with a few chairs, but since I don't do photostories for the big dolls and mostly photograph them outdoors, I really don't need elaborate props. I've always loved miniatures, though, long before I had tiny ball-jointed dolls, so the little ones have dollhouses with all the trimmings. If I had a bigger house, I would probably have lots more stuff for the big dolls. It's only the lack of space (well...and money) that holds me back.

    15. My mom obsessively hunts for furniture for my dolls, leaving me enough money to buy clothes and the like. Unfortunately, there isn't much room in my room for it all, so I just pick and choose my favorites and store the rest in our extra room until I need it for photoshoots.

I have 4 beds, three benches (including a zebra print sofa), a cabinet, and four chairs.

If you're looking for things, thrift stores (if you have those) and yard sales are magic for doll items.

    16. I would really love to have a real House for my BJDs. Yea, A House :) if possible. Right now, I'm collection sofas, beds, tables,etc..... I have just bought a set of sofas, and Re-ment "princess tea party" sets, and searching for a good living room table for my 1/6 Girls.

With me, have all size bjds (1/3, 1/4 and 1/6), it's really hard to decided which size should all those staffs be, and even harder to match the styles, but I'm still trying :)

    17. I don't collect furniture, but I've got a few small props - seashells and things like that.

    18. I think if someone had the room to do something than hay why not just gives your dolls more of a life of there own at lest that's what I think ^^

    19. I think if someone had the room to do something than hay why not just gives your dolls more of a life of there own at lest that's what I think ^^ I myself have dabbled in making little bench or couch for a MSD. But I think Im better at making comforters & pillows & thing like that.

    20. I don't want a dollhouse sort of thing for my dolls. It would be rather odd to me to have a dollhouse for 60 and 70cm dolls.

At the moment I don't have any furniture for my dolls. I am thinking about maybe making some sofa's for them, but nothing more.

For me, they don't really need furniture.

    21. I have two seats. One is a metal Dollmore chair and the other is a MSD sized couch for two I just got off Ebay really cheaply (£20 inc. delivery from Hong Kong). I don't plan on getting anything else as it takes up too much space.

    22. I have so many props I don't know what to do with them all!!!
I try to use them in my photo shoots. I keep them in those big plastic containers on wheels and roll them under the bed! My dolls sit around on chairs and little lounge I have for them. I also have a tall cabinet that I have removed some shelves from(to make little 'rooms') so my taller guys can hang out surrounded by props!.........I just love collecting doll sized things....;)

      xen :)

    23. Oh yes - furniture! :aheartbea

I would love to have a permanent room for the girls - well, most of all I'd love to have a whole doll house and some outdoor scenes..... But our living conditions won't allow it at present.

Which means that I bring out the stuff for photoshoots at present. I am planning a collapsible doll stage, though.

What we have at present is collected a piece at a time over the years... Larger things from Y!J, some smaller props as well, and other things from all over - second hand bookshops, antique shops, scrapbooking sections in art stores, and so on.

This is the main room we have assembled so far:

We have quite a lot of other small props that didn't fit with this photoshoot, and some extra furniture that aren't really in the proper style with the rest of the stuff... We'll see where those pieces will land in the future.

    24. :)yup l collect dollie furniture/props for them and l'm always looking for stuff for them and a person can find some very interesting finds.

    25. I do, in fact, my MSD's have a two storey house. I don't even attempt it beyond the odd prop for the SD's however, they just are too big for me to realistically try a similar set up, but as a lot of others have said, the props often really make the scene :)

    26. originally i never considered furniture and props for my dolls. but as i see all the wonderful photos that everyone accomplishes with lovely props i have now started collecting them as well. i try to look for things suited for 18"/16" dolls and re ment for the little guys. sooooo, now i have lovely wing chairs, a chaise lounge, dining table and chairs, china tea service, and tinies props and foods. they are scattered around the house as i don't have a permanent space suitable for setting up.
we shall see what i can accomplish with these.

    27. I love everyone's creative and imaginative displays. I am collecting items for a Gene doll kitchen- with vintage toy refridgerator, sink, etc. and stove by Wolverine which fits a 15 inch doll well.

I have been inspired by the Tasha Tudor dollhouse which is displayed in the Rockefeller museum in colonial williamsburg- about forty minutes from my home. I hardly ever go to Williamsburg now without going to see it- I can't resist it. It is made for Tasha's miniature collection she displayed on shelves in her kitchen for her 15-16 inch dolls she herself created.

Here is a pic of the chair I found at an estate sale with my big doll- I adore this chair

it measures about 18 1/2 inches high, and looks great next to her-

    28. the only furniture I have for Helena is a bed and a small dresser I picked up from Michael's Crafts for all of her clothes and all of her other little chachkys.

    29. I have....

Way, way, way too many props and accessories.

I've always been attracted to miniatures... As a result I have a ton of doll stuff. Which I'm trying to seriously thin down by selling. And I've made... Some progress... XP lol

But I think one of my favorite pieces that I currently own is a simple, large green couch. And a Blue and white tea set.

    30. I'm trying. .^^ But having a hard time finding stuff. Though I did just find the most epic doll bed ever on ebay......

    31. In my pullip dollcase and blythe shelf I have furniture set up in scenes, and I'll borrow it for my Pippos. But I only have a few props and chairs for my larger BJDs and a few of the pieces i'll borrow from my daughters AG stuff for pictures. I don't really have the room for it.

    32. I'm trying to! XD I make my own miniature doll food, and I have a couple of little props - but usually when I find something perfect at the store or something, which is VERY rare, it's really expensive.

    33. I have furniture and other props. I don't have a permanent room display setup. I just grab the furniture and props I need at the time to do a photoshoot. I'm always on the lookout for props!

    34. I'm like a prop whore >o I have drawers full of props. Lol Seriously I have props for everything, If I don't have one for something, it'll be made. As for furniture ALL of it has to be made by me. They style I want just isn't made in that size. I haven't gotten around to finishing a full room yet, As I don't have any floor left in my room to put it anywhere. I'm having the most fun with Mephisto's dungeon :3 I can't wait fo finally get it all set up <3 It's not just their rooms I'm building it will be their work places too <3 And Tak's little laboratory <3

    35. I currently have only 1/6 scale dodlls, and they have a whole apartment complex! But that's easy enough, with so much furniture available for Barbie.

I don't plan on making a full home for any of my bigger dolls, but I do plan on having a few furniture props. For the 1/4 scale doll I have on order, I'm hoping to get her a vanity and bathtub that's for sale at Target, and hopefully an armchair from somewhere. If I ever get any bigger dolls, I'm probably going to restrict myself to a chair or two, or maybe a sofa, with the possible exception of finding some "cheap" chairs not intended specifically for BJD. The bigger the furniture, the more expensive it gets! And I really don't want to get into beds for them, because those take up so much space...

    36. I'd love to have a whole 'home' for my doll, but space forbids it... :( Right now she has a black chaise, and a small dresser. I want to find her a bed, and another couch/chair, but I think that's where I'll have to draw the line. Finding small props for her is a whole 'nother story though, I love finding her things! My favourite is a little blood bag from a cell phone charm... I want to do a hospital photostory eventually! :)

    37. I do i LOVE the furniture and props, i have a house for the 8\" tinies i made from bookcases and a barbie cottage garden scene for upto 10\" tinies, i am working on a roomset for msd sized as we speak, not easy finding stuff here in the uk though thats the only bug bear!

    38. I just purchased a dollhouse on Ebay yesterday, so I have been collecting lots of tiny goodies I find online...it's exciting because I never really had a dollhouse when I was little. My dolls played on empty bookshelves. ;) So right now, I have a dollhouse full of furniture coming...portraits, flower pots, spice jars, wall clocks, and and and... :D

    39. I'm kind of lucky that our house is decorated in such a way it fits different themes.
Our Parlor (what is the word the use now for parlor?): Japanese styled spring including hana branches, vases, and dolls dressed from the Heian period.
      Family Room: European styled
      My Room: Pop/Art room

    40. I love furniture, props & accessories & find them quite neccesary for my displays. I don't have tall enough shelves to display the dolls standing so they're always sitting or lounging around holding little props & surrounded by other things. I haven't wallpapered the cabinets or hung any pictures on the walls simply because I'd want to change them too often but their dressers & chests have all sorts of momentos on them. I'm also big on pets so there's often cats cuddled up on laps.

I pick-up all this stuff wherever I find it. A lot came from Ebay & quite a bit of furniture from The Doll Market. I've also found great things at antique fairs, auctions, estate sales & flea markets as well as a few pieces from other doll shops. Most anything designed for 18" play dolls will work with SDs and for the tinies there's always Barbie stuff or miniatures if they're small enough. I find the MSDs the hardest to find in-scale furniture & accessories for but I only have a couple of them & they've stolen the few things my fashion dolls used to posess.

Just keep your eyes open when you're out shopping & get a feel for your favorite scale. Look at stuff for it can become rather than just what it is. My kids have ended up with lots of goodies this way.

    41. I like seeing photos of other people's doll houses/rooms and all of the neat furniture and props that are available, but I don't really have any interest in collecting it myself...I'd rather spend that money on buying more dolls and clothes, wigs, eyes, faceup supplies, etc. for them. Plus, I have a lot of 4-legged children (2 cats, 4 dogs and a pot-bellied pig) who would be waaay too curious about stuff like that sitting around the house. As it is, I'm going to have to be very careful about where I keep my boy, or else he'll be "mistaken" for a chew toy.

    42. I don't, but I'd like to. :)

    43. I would love to have a nice room for Kaedyn and the rest (if they ever get here >.>) but space is pretty limited =( I've got a corner set up but barely any furniture. I always find small props and scale items, but not real furniture D:

    44. I try to restrict myself to accessories these days because they take less space ... but I constantly think of chairs, chaise longue, tea tables and sofas... I can see I will be loosing the battle against my resolve not to buy furniture because every time I look in my wardrobe I think : "I can store an SD size chair behind this raw of jackets" or, "this space is just enough for a small tea table".

They won't be on display all the time but I will take them out when I play with my doll ... so I would say... not YET ... but definitely soon .

    45. We have a rule, Re Ment is for Littles. The only exception I make for the bigger dolls is 1/4 and 1/3 scale art supplies so they can be like mommy. Otherwise there would be no room for anyone.

The 1/6 crowd has to keep their plastic crack in their doll house, the curio cabinets, the shadow boxes...

    46. I have a section in my room for my dolls, so I set up a sitting room for them with furniture. :) I love getting small props- food, weapons, tea cups, etc. but also things for the furniture I have (tables) like a mirror, decorations and such. I even got a few antique french mini plates to display for them, and a small porcelain Royal Doultan too. I love getting things to match the furniture- even a rug!^_^

    47. I love props and dollhouses and I'd like to have a BJD-scale room. My father made a sofa for my MSDs and I have much little things like plushies, vases etc. I have a MSD-sized sewing machine too. When I get my Roxydoll Lucy I'd do a 1/6-scale room for her by using and customizing Pullip's and Barbie's furniture.

    48. Oh God, I have so much stuff for them and yet I seldom if ever take pictures or anything. They just have the stuff. I'm simply a fool for scale items. The Sd and MSD sizes pretty much share furniture since it all really was made for 18"AG (not to mention the camping-sewing-reading-cooking-studying-eating-drinking-musical accessories that fill drawers.) The YoSD size has way too much furniture (Ladie & Friends Shoestring Babies furniture and Briarbear furniture) The smaller 1/6 crowd has Madeline furniture annd Re-ments and the PukiPukis have Ikea. My dolls own more and better stuff than I do.
I keep thinking that I'll do a Gallery thread called "Things my Dolls Own"!

But I also have a very curious Bengal cat, so nothing small and moveable can stay out; the dolls all sit in the large sofa and chairs with smaller dolls in their laps but I am afraid to set up anything more elaborate for fear that my cat might decide to test if the Law of Gravity applies to the Dolls' belongings as well as her own.

    49. I've got a teacup and saucer for my msd that I found at a flea market. He also has a cane that he came with. At a yard sale I found some cute little wicker furniture that is a pretty good size for my DZ bunny and she has some re-ment food too.

    50. I have a re-ment addiction. More than anything, it's the little animals though. They are my dolls' little toys but when they aren't looking, they come to life! :)

I really like re-ments alot. One of the main reasons I picked my Pipos Sugar Robin over Bao is because alot of the food items are more to her scale.

    51. i enjoy finding props and furniture in unlikely places...so i have a little more then i can use. Occasionally i re-arrange things to fit better, but their still scattered all over my room. I hope to one day make them their own room. Ideally i would like a large hobby room, were i can put one wall for the dolls, a table for photographing them, a table for drawing and computer work, and i guess a book shelf to store my manga and art books in. that would be my ideal situation, but i guess that would mean id need a pretty big room. XD

    52. A dollhouse is too big for me, i only nead a room corner.
If i can find some furnitures for my dolls, i'll definitely buy them~

    53. I don't, they have to share with me.
Right now I'd rather spend my money on more dolls than furniture.

    54. I do, and I have a fair amount of stuff [chairs, accessories, a bathtub, food, plates, etc] but I don't have enough space to make a room for all my dolls [I have 3 SD with 1 on the way and 2 MSD, with more SDs planned] so I've just got them as props for photos. I figure if I move one day and get a bigger place then maybe I'll have more room for my doll stuff. :) But until then I'm find storing it and pulling it out for photos.

    55. Yes and yet no. Loren has some odds and ends; I've found some tiny bags of actual (and also tiny) gummi bears inexplicably at a candy shop, and a leather bracelet that he uses as a belt. There are few other things I've come across his scale that would suit him...most of what I've seen thus far is cutesy and far to feminine for him.

    56. I don't have a doll yet, but I found myself looking at a bathtub that looks like it might be about the right scale for the MSD size ones today. I'm sure once I have one I'll be buying all sorts of things.

    57. I was lucky enough to come across a 4 post bed in a shop for $10, and a SD sized chair for 4.
I also found a tea set with cakes for $3.
I'm always on the look out for dollie sized things, as one day I hope to have enough to make a SD/MSD sized doll house!

    58. i don't think i'd want a dollhouse, but furniture i would :)
props and things are easy to find though, i'm a bit of a packrat with small toys and stuff :sweat

    59. i did when i started the hobby , right now i have enough of furnitures so i left myslef only one set for my msd, at last my dolls are sitting everywhere so furnitures aren't necessarry for me and only take free space :P
