Do you collect furniture/props or room settings for your dolls??

Oct 15, 2008

1. Oh, man. Wanting to save my money for a second doll is probably one of the few things keeping me from going overboard with props for Agatha. (The other being space, but it's so damn tempting regardless.)

See, Agatha is a steampunk mad scientist, so I keep wanting steampunky, science-y things for her. I do have a bug clank that a friend made for her, but so far beyond that there's not much I have for her in that vein. Which is a good thing, because I'm afraid if I start too much I may just get eaten by the prop potential. I actually have found some tiny beakers/erlenmeyer flasks on eBay, as well as some potential test tubes, and someone on here has some lovely little Victorian-esque "medicines" that I'm finding incredibly tempting.

But those props are too awesomely esoteric to keep hidden in a drawer, so then I would probably want some sort of 1/3 cabinet to put it all in. And that would then demand a proper lab bench, and maybe some kind of "monster slab" for Frankenstein-esque experiments. That would in turn need something that at least *looks* like a Tesla coil, but that then increases my temptation for a *real* mini Tesla coil. . . It's all making me wonder if maybe I was a mad scientist myself in another life. XD

So, while I've so far resisted the siren call, it's partially because I know just how crazy I could get with all of it.

2. My dolls as soon as they come inspire me to make them a home :D
This could be dangerous thTugh! their numbers are increasing :P

3. Furniture yes! Got them a sofa chair. Gives a little variation on the display along with the good old doll stand. But it does take alot of space and requires periodic cleaning to keep the dusts off.

4. Just started adapting a dollhouse for my Lati Yellow. I love it so far just need to buy furniture for it, lot's of furniture.

5. I don't have a lot of it, but when I find things I like I do often pick them up. I have a few little "environments" on bookshelves where I store them, so they're not just sitting, they're posed around furniture or props. The tinies have a couple of Ikea furniture sets, the main group of minis just got a couple of lovely "fairy garden" benches from Hobby Lobby, and the other set of minis currently has an American Girl knock-off brand daybed (which will switch to an Ikea bed when I get it assembled and finished off). There's also a nice-size handmade teddybear chair that fits the new 60cm boy well, and a fuzzy "beanbag" that the fantasy tinies can use.

I've got a handful of props, too; I used to live near a place that sold Rement, so the tinies have a bunch of those, and now I live near a Japanese grocer who sells some very nice food erasers, so the minis are starting to get those.

6. I love finding little doll size items! ♥ It's always what I'm looking for when I go to antique/thrift stores. For furniture I only have two benches and 2 stands, but I have a few cute little character-specific items for each doll. I have...lessee... some vintage miniature books, bouquets, a doll, plush, picture frame, a dagger, a skeleton...probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Oh, my favorite is an in-scale needle felted tabby cat that looks very realistic. ♥ I've been trying to find a 1/3 scale wolf for the longest time. That'd be the ultimate accessory. >.<

7. I've definitely been collecting things so that my girl has some props to play with :) I'm hoping to eventually need a shelving unit to keep her stuff on ;)

8. I plan on buying oriental fans for my MSD girl. And my second doll, who will be modeled after a much-beloved character of mine will have weapon props. But furniture? Probably not. My room is too small as it is, and even considering an SD doll is pushing it.

9. I have a couch that I made for my dolls when I only had the three. It since had to be put away because of a lack of space, but recently I was able to drag it out again and the tinies are now using it as a jungle gym...

10. I have two benches, a few chairs (my favorite being my metal MSD chair I got at a pottery store) a doll stand (planning to get more) and a bunch of different props...Even found a Sherlock Holmes pipe in MSD size.

11. Thanks to YouTube, I've been able to create some pretty awesome couches for my larger Iplehouse friends. If you don't mind spending pretty pennies on props, there are some really amazing pet beds out there that mimic the real thing, only to scale.

12. I never thought I would go this far, but I have managed to find a table with 6 chairs, with 2 matching dressers. A chest of draws. A chaise longe. 2 side chairs. A telephone box. A chandelier and a pink cadilac! All in 1/3 size that fit my EID boys perfectly.
I really need to get taking pictures and move some of them on as they take up so much room.

13. I made a space on a book shelf for my LTF and consider it her own space, it is decorated to a point, pretty much a dresser and some of her toys but will add a couple chairs eventually. I'm getting a friend for her, another LTF soon so they will stay in the same space together!

14. Gosh, yes. I have 2-3 good sized boxes full of furniture and have everything what feels like everything. It doesn't help that I'm a knick-knack addict, so I have a penchant for small accents to begin with. i have all the "normal" things a collector would have like matched furniture sets and a bed, but I also have bookshelves, books on the bookshelves, a wheelbarrow, school desks, a loom, rugs, in-scale clothespins, tarot cards...

15. I love shopping second hand, and every time I see something I could use, I'm soooooo very tempted to get the furniture and props.
I gor a huge collection of props, I choose from for my different shoots. I'd really love furniture in sd scale, bur I have no space for it.....

16. Not for the bigger sizes, but I am making a dollhouse for my pukipuki. I really would love to have more props, but two things won't let me: money and space.

17. I'm more interested in larger dolls so finding correctly scaled furniture seems more intimidating to me--maybe I should look at it as an interesting challenge instead. That is to say, no, I don't currently have any furniture for a larger doll, but I would like to one day.

18. I do collect a few sofa. It's hard to find some with good quality and yet not with very very high price and heavy LOL

19. I am planning to make a installation scene for their SD dolls.
Buy furniture on order from the masters who made a special doll furniture.
Walls, floors, windows and the rest will be doing herself.
Now my dolls are in their boxes. I take them only for fitting garments and photo shoots.

20. I don't collect as much as I would like only because collecting props for 65cm dolls gets jumbly fast. So I mostly look for personal items for them; things they would carry in their pocket or bag. Once I figure out their display space - I'll look more aggressively at building out their rooms. I'm always so envious of the detailed little rooms in 1/6 or 1/4 scale.

21. i built a sofa: i made it out of the Iplehouseboxy Tedros came in. Ok- not his style- it is pink. But now it is not his sofa anymore cause my lovely mainecoone Balu decided, it is his sofa now and he relaxes there every day and sleeps there, dreaming about a lovely lady for Tedros to come

22. Honestly my dream is to one day have a whole room dedicated to BJD rooms, so I could have scenes and sets for all of my dolls for all the seasons or holidays, from tiny size to MSD to SD size.

23. I'm working on two sets for my dolls. The first a Japanese tea room and the other a vampire boudiour. LOL.

24. It might've been mentioned already, but American Girl doll furniture fits pretty well for some BJD :)
I currently have "two rooms" for my dolls. They are the top two shelves on my bookshelf, modded to look like rooms. One is a living room, with a large sofa, and the other has a giant canopy bed! I am still working on it, and plan on adding wallpaper, as well as decorative curtains~

25. I don't have dollhouse because my dolls can sit everywhere in my room :) But I do own 3 classic wooden chairs for them; one for 60-70 cm size doll and 2 for MSD size. I wanted to build a sofa for them once but I couldn't do, so I bought these 3 antique chairs (originally for porcelain dolls, I guess) instead. And sometimes they can use my tatami for Japanese theme.

26. I enjoy creating spaces for my dolls and it also serves as a safe place so the cats can't get to them ;-) My puki condos are made from house shaped boxes I found at Target and it's still a work in progress. Then recently I found an awesome lantern which I'm going to construct a treehouse inside for my realpukis.

27. I bought a small couch for my yo's. I can fit five on them. This couch replaced my homemade one. Three are sitting on iron and wooden garden bench adorned with fake fur. Two are sitting on seats made for cellphones and I recently built a pukifee sized bed out of cardboard, ducttape, glue, adhesive fabric ribbon, regular ribbon, fabric, foam and faux fur. I also have two miniature pillows that were meant as scent thingies for your closet. A teabag holder thing served as a closet in the beginning and I have also made a cat scratching post out of cardboard, tape, glue, rope, woolen dreadlocks and fake fur. My mermaid is sitting in a bathtub from a gift set with a pillow from my zuzu delf box in it.

My dolls don't have a living room space for themselves or something, because I have no room for it. My miniatures only come out if I want to use them in pictures and they are seated on their furniture all around my room. Only my msd doesn't have furniture, he just sits on the shelf.

28. Nope-No room. :(. I like SD size and my room is crammed with stuff as it is. I would if I could, but I don't have space.

29. I'm building a msd size little cottage room for my dolls to hang out in. So far I have a finished floor and a door. ^_^

30. I'm slowly finding playscale stuff for my girl. Craft stores have been my best bet so far.

31. I plan to, that's for sure. I have a few things here or there, but nothing that I reaaaally want.

32. I collect miniature or scale items for background and build or have built furniture. I also have made books and sewn pillows and upholstery. Consignment and thrift shops, including goodwill are great hunting grounds.

33. All the time. I don't care if I have a use for it or not, if its the right size for my boys, I buy it.....and my pride and joy in props are 2 awesome 1/3 scale guns. Well a shotgun and automatic weapon of some sort.

38. OH, that desk - & the whole set-up - is AMAZING!!! Just love it!!!

39. Wow @yamalskaya that is beautiful! I love it!

To answer the OP, yes I do have furniture, props, scenery and more. In fact, I know I've spent much more money on things for the dolls than on the dolls themselves. I'm a sucker for miniature things. My entire spare room is nothing but doll dioramas.

40. I'm in the same boat, I have 70cm boys so I want a few pieces but I know it'll be big but I also have found it tough to find anything that might fit them to use that I like!

41. Where you find your items!! I love them!!

42. Some custom-made furniture. The shelving my job. The typewriters I decorated from plastic music box. Miniatures I buy everywhere.

43. I buy some props if I fall over them, but I don't make rooms for the dolls. I have a shelf for the dolls but I don't have any props on that shelf. I only use them in photoshoots from time to time but making rooms for the dolls is not something I do.

44. I have gotten some furniture for my dolls and was planning on getting more. Since all my dolls are Sd size, I realized space would be an issue, so I just stuck with what I have. As far as props go, I have a guitar and a birdcage with a bird in it. All my dolls have an animal spirit guide - mostly stuffed animals.

45. @yamalskaya that room you made is amazing, I love how you built and arranged the shelves yourself! Fantastic work! :D

I have started collecting a few 1/3 scale pieces and man... it is difficult to find really good work in that scale. Even if price were no obstacle, the scarcity of the existence of highly refined 1/3 furniture is. People make extremely fine work for 1/12 scale and even 1/6 scale, pieces of miniature furniture so accurate, so delicate, so detailed as to virtually indistinguishable from real human furniture in photos.

And then you get to 1/3 scale and it's... well, you can find stuff that technically sort of fits, but it is nowhere near the same quality; the proportions tend to be clunky and child-like (often because these are intended for children, not for collectors, or for dolls of very squat proportions like porcelain dolls, teddy bears), the detail's not great, the overall structure is just... off. I will say it's at least relatively easy to find accurate looking windsor chairs and ladderback chairs but as I am not much of a fan of that furniture style, it doesn't help me.

I'm not even satisfied with the Volks furniture, honestly. Still too chunky.

But, I plan to keep hunting and hope to have a small diorama space someday. I have fortunately located a few makers of custom furniture and made inquiries, and although the victorian couch I plan to commission will cost as much as a doll itself, I feel it will be worth the money.

46. This is the problem I have a lot too. Almost everything out there is either childish and bulky, or just not a style I like. A big problem is everything is so short! A bed or couch is typically at least up to an adult human's knee, but so many doll couches or beds are basically like sitting on the floor for them. All of my dolls are modern characters, and the old fashioned "granny" style or elegant Victorian type things just don't work for me either. My dad owned a furniture store for many years, so I'm a little extra picky on realism. I do occasionally get him to make things for me when he asks what I want for holidays. So far, I've got a couple of really nice beds, a couch and a coffee table, and he made a chest of drawers for my sister's doll in exact 1/3 scale. I've begged him to start a BJD furniture shop on Etsy now that he's retired and has too much free time, but he refuses, saying he only likes to do it for fun and he doesn't want to do retail/customer service ever again. :(

47. I have a bunch of chairs and stools but I ran out of room for them in my room and they're in my storage shed. I pull them out for photos.

48. Working on an apothecary type shelf for my tiny delf, and I have a couple dressers and a chair. I browse antique shops a lot and find a few gems along the way.

49. I love miniatures, ever since my parents built me a dollhouse when I was 5. I have lots of props and furniture collected from thrift stores, antique stores, yard sales, online, etc. I'm working on a large diorama setup right now. I have a spare bedroom that is normally off limits to the cat.

50. some times i do like chair or stairs it helps in photography

51. I am mainly getting cat or dog furniture as for couches and beds. They are cheap and they work for big dolls. Other than that I have already bought carpet pieces and stuff like that to make full rooms. They will be big but they can be placed on cupboards so they do not take too much space :)

52. I love getting furniture for my dolls. I often find that dollar stores have things that can work for dolls, but I don't know if that's just limited to Australia. We also have a few DAISO chains here which sometimes have some nice stuff.

53. I love using props with my dolls, like the alpaca plushie that Cicero has taken a liking to. n_n I'd like to buy more toys for him, as well as proper seating and other types of props (the possibilities are endless, really)

54. I'm only just getting into this side of dolls. Once I get my two little ones I want to take a shelf for both of them in my room and make them little rooms! My dolls defiantly will have personalities and stories, because that's my first hobby, writing and painting out my worlds and stories! It would be hard for me to not create stories for them! xD I know I'll likely make a lot of it myself. I don't have much money, so while I'm willing to save up for things, I'll likely use that money for: first the dolls, then second clothing, and third material to make my own. (Really want to learn to sew) So furniture and stuff I'll do with random stuff I find laying around! I also found some chairs that are meant to be cellphone holders, but they are perfect for dolls of the 1/6 size! I also have a few random things I found at a craft store!

I can't see buying to many of the proper miniatures, mainly because that is expensive, and I would rather save for clothing, but if I get hooked on making their rooms and find the perfect thing, I just might cave. xD

55. I have cellphone chairs for my dolls too! I bought a couple of metal and glass IKEA shelving units to be rooms for my dolls. I have an end table I made from scraps of wood and a sectional made from cardboard, foam, and felt. I look for props for them everywhere. Gift shops often have random small things.

56. I recently found a metal garden chair and a vanity dresser (probably a jewelry box) at a local antique shop that are perfect for my MSD dolls. I did a photo shoot in the backyard with my friend not long after and they looked great. I think I spent less than $10 on both. I actually see a lot of things that are appropriate scale for my SDs and MSDs at thrift and antique stores. :D

57. While I don't have any BJD dolls yet, when I did play with Barbies and other dolls, I always loved having props, furniture and houses for them as it did make it more personalized and can really set the stage for photographic opportunities (if that's your thing). So I feel like when I do get a BJD that I would probably grab a few props.

58. Lol, the title of this thread is rather an understatement for me.

I have collected tons of furniture and props, the majority of which are 1/4 BJD scale, and belong to Lue.

The furniture is a mixture of American Girl doll furniture, vintage salesman samples, vintage doll furniture, handmade replica/doll furniture, and creatively shaped jewelry boxes.

Lue currently has his "room" set up on the floor, in one corner of my bedroom. It actually takes up about a quarter of the total room. It started out as a mostly western style room, with a really neat AG bed/ closet/ dressing table unit, and an AG computer desk unit, both of which were painted purple. Lue's favorite color. He also had a small sofa, tables, chairs, etc.

Over the years it has changed, as Lue has become more interested in his Japanese heritage, he has acquired more Japanese props, and Japanese and Asian styled furniture, i.e. a pair of step tansu, floor cushions, futon, etc.

My plan is to eventually turn my late partner's hobby room into a sort of walk in dolls "house", with floor to ceiling shelves divided up into "rooms" and utilizing a lot of Lue's Western style furniture, as well as other doll sized furniture pieces and props I've found. This will be where most of my BJDs will live, and hang out.

However, I also fully intend to have a 1/4 BJD scale Japanese style house built specifically for Lue..... I've got the plans for a 1:12 scale Japanese style doll house which my carpenter friend and I can scale up to 1:4, and then adapt and modify to accommodate Lue's Japanese furniture and props.

I just haven't quite decided where will be the best place to put it yet.

I'm sort of half tempted to try and make it fully weather proof like a real house and build it outside, complete with its own 1:4 scale Japanese style garden, or possibly build it inside its own separate small building, designed on the outside to look like a Japanese tea house. ^_^

59. If you don't mind me asking where did you find the plans for the Japanese house?

60. Oh good gracious, do I collect furniture and props...

I acquired a TON of stuff back in the '90s, when I was doing American Girls and other large-size play dolls. If I couldn't find the thing I wanted, then I started building. I kept it up all through college and even after I was married, because that was my hobby. I liked finding stuff that was a little too large for the AG girls, because they're supposed to represent a 9-10 year old child, so it didn't make sense for them to have everything perfectly to their scale. Then the 1/3 BJDs moved in and took over.

I'm constantly on the hunt. I keep an eye out everywhere I go, and have found some really nifty things on keyrings and in gift shops over the years. I love the Holiday time of year, because this a great time to find nice ornaments that are in-scale for a variety of sizes. If one is lucky, there are sometimes kiosks in malls selling nice dolls and accessories for Christmas gifts. I've gotten props there too.

I'm finding the 70cm+ to be the trickiest size to shop for. *sigh* They're a weird in-between scale, or else they're all ridiculously out-sized in my 1/3 world.

I'm planning on scaling up some Barbie-sized furniture plans and seeing where we can go from there. The lines of the pieces are little Victorian/ old-fashioned, but I think I can make them work with a bold fabric choice. My guys are students primarily, so a hodge-podge of pieces works for them. ^^;

But oh wow, did I ever find out how many furniture pieces and props I acquired when I moved this year! I'm still trying to find places for things!!
