Do you bring your dolls to work?

Mar 27, 2011

    1. I don't really have a job yet, but I don't think I'll bring my dolls because I'd be scared they won't accept them.
I do however bring them to parties with my friends. Just one yosd size doll. They are very careful with them and know I like bringing one along. I also often carry my favorite yosd girl Airi with my in a small bag when I have to do things like tests or whatever. Even though I don't really take her out in public, I just like having her with me.

    2. I want to bring my pets to work because anything I bring to my job would be keeping me company. I'd love to bring my doll to work but I'd be terrified he'd be stolen or damaged. So no dolls (or pets) for me.

    3. I often tell colleagues at work about his doll, showing photos. When I brought the 60cm doll to work, they exclaimed, "What is it little! We thought he was much more." I was very surprised by their reaction.

    4. Yep, I bring my dolls to work. One at the time though. Some colleagues got creeped out, others were ok.

    5. No. Because work is work. I get paid by my boss to work effectively - not to daydream or to babysit. Its like bringing a child or a baby to work - which is not professional and acceptable in a work place unless you have an easy going boss. The only thing I think is acceptable is to leave the dolls in your car so that when you go on a lunch break you see them..

    6. It really depends on what your job is. Line worker, sure you have to be there paying attention all day.

Knowledge worker, not so much. And taking a few minutes to daydream, stretch your legs and use your distance vision improves your productivity.

Saying that, I still wouldn't bring my doll to work for fear of incidental damage, dirt and coworkers.

Depends on the climate I suppose. I wouldn't want the doll sitting in the sun all day, especially in summer when the temperature inside the car would easily be over 60 C.

    7. Not a chance with my job. I move around too much in a factory, so it's not the kind of environment where you leave any personal effects around.

If I had a relaxed office job I might see something like that, the sort where people have those big zen garden desk toys (I don't know, CEOs?) then it wouldn't be a big deal, but generally I can't see bringing a hobby into work whether it's painting, wood carving, or bjds.

    8. No, I don't see the point even aside from issues of accidental damage or weirding out coworkers.

    9. I did! They welcomed my Adrienne and were super curious about him! :kitty2

    10. I did as I was working a desk job. My co-workers already thought I was strange because I'd decorate my space with plushies and various Disney figures. So when I started bringing a doll to work just to prop near my computer that was no different then anything else I've brought.

    11. Nuh, won't do it...

    12. I work in an office setting where it is possible to bring them to work, but I would never do it. I am not one to decorate my space at work. That, and I would not want to risk damaging or losing anything.

    13. I did when I use to go to knitting classes. Now that the place has closed down I don't. Unless i sell them then I won't bring them to work. I have told people about them. They don't seam to mind. Their like my second family.

    14. No... :( Haha I think my dolls are the safest at home :)

    15. If I had a small one, a 10-16cm one, I would probably take it with me.. Well.. i'd have to be extra careful with it, but still, it's a nice company to have~

    16. i dont move olive around that much, and i work in a very busy animal hospital. bringing her would be a disaster

    17. My MSD is with me at work quite often, due to me sewing stuff at my coworkers place, but she's kept safely in her original box that fits perfectly in a gym bag I have. She hasn't actually been out in the office though and I don't want people touching her either. I might take my incoming Tiny with me though and actually have her out and about. The MSD is just a bit big and inconvenient for that.

    18. Yes I do. My dolls gives me a huge moral support, so I'm working better ))) And other persons in the office are aware very well, that if they dare just think of touch one of my dolls, I will tear out their legs. Colleagues's legs, not dolls ))

    19. It would be really impractical for me to do that, considering that both of my jobs involve a lot of physical activity. BUT if I'm working at home on my novel, then, yes, I guess? They sit out in the living room within my line of sight, if that counts haha.

    20. I'd like to but I'd have to leave my girl in a locker while at Spare Time, which is not a good place for bjds at all.

    21. I haven't done this, probably won't ever take them to work with me either. My clients (small children) would probably love them but I'd be too worried about them getting damaged. My colleagues often ask what I am up to, and what I have been making lately and they seem to be interested in heating about my latest doll adventures

    22. I've taken a tiny off-topic doll to work before to work on her clothes (we have a lot of downtime some days and hand-sewing is a nice way to pass the time) but I honestly couldn't imagine bringing an expensive bjd to work for any reason... too much risk. Plus, any bigger than 1/6 just seems like a hassle to tote around.

I still sew for my bjds at work, I just size them and stuff beforehand...

    23. One of my jobs is helping my sister run her store so, yes, I do bring my doll to work when I want to take more involved photos of her. My bedroom is too messy and crowded to do a photo shoot in lol. And the back room has lots of space for me to put together backdrops.

    24. Since I work at a job where I can keep an eye on him, I brought Kai with me the other day. We’ve been busy, so I couldn’t play with him much, but it was nice to have him with me.

    25. I have two tinies on my desk. Nobody knows their value, and we're a company that values familiarity and decency (we actually had to sign a good behaviour agreement), so nobody would ever dare. They also know I don't respond well to any degree of transgression. Went full WSHH for less.

    26. No, and I'll never do it. I work attending all kind of people (50-60 different persons everyday) and I think it wouldn't be practical.

    27. No, I don't want anyone to touch my doll. I think there are many chances that my doll can broke.

    28. I would NEVER take a doll to my current work. Partly because I know she would get stolen, at least as soon as it was known how much she is worth, and partly because there are ZERO nerds at my work, and they would not understand a doll. My love of books and anime has already made me a bit of outcast. I can only imagine what a doll would do. That and at a fast food place, I wouldn't really have a good place to put her where she would be safe from dirt or breakage.

    29. I only brought my smaller size dolls to work. They make me feel "happier" or more "positive". They are always around me, and never leave my side. But usually, they are home.

    30. I work with the public so I really wouldn't dream of it! Ha ha ha I literally had a customer snap my name stand in half at my office to "See how strong it was" >n> I shudder to think about bringing a doll there!

    31. Nope... I can’t... I work in an office and my boss is very strict :(

    32. Honestly I am shocked at how many people are able and do bring in their dolls to work. I have never even considered it as I tend to keep my hobby under-wraps. I feel really encouraged by people who do and totally understanding of those that don't. It overall is still really inspiring and eye opening at how honest people can be about their dolls. Thank you for sharing!

    33. I wouldn't cause i work at an ice cream shop. Im thinking of taking one to my university though or maybe just to a small, quiet cafe with friends to introduce them

    34. I do. But I work in an office, I don't have contact with the public and I'm the only one in my room. Plus my dolls are tiny ones (Pukifee, Lati Yellow...) so they are easy to carry around. One for each day

    35. No way!! I work at a car wash so they would get wet and filthy within minutes. Even if I worked somewhere else, I'd be really worried something would happen to them.

    36. Never. I work with children with developmental disabilities and nothing is safe from destruction.

    37. I bring My doll to school.sometimes.

    38. :kitty2Sometimes I bring my doll to my University.

    39. I work at a comicbook store but I don't think I would ever bring my dolls to work. I bet some customers would ask if we sell them and that could be troublesome

    40. No. I manage a restaurant and it wouldn't be practical. Getting the food smell out would be absolute hell.

    41. I could never bring my dolls to work. I work in food service and I can barely keep myself clean most days.

    42. I work retail, so I probably wouldn't unless I could keep her locked in my locker. And really, only then if I had intentions of shopping for her. Like, to hold fabrics and props against her, see how they fit, etc.

    43. I would if I could! I am a barista and wouldn’t be able to have her at work! Plus I work for a chain company who is very fussy about the stores appearance and can’t imagine having a doll sitting in customer view would go down well :’)

    44. I do field work. My equipment has trouble surviving, let alone my dolls. Plus, they are mostly SDs. That's a lot of space. The only one I would consider is the tiny for some cool outdoors photos, but even that feels a bit too risky.

    45. I work in a retail line and sometime I will bring my yosd to work. my co-workers like my dolls:).

    46. Carrying a doll around while doing the promotional modeling work I do would be a hard no. Logistics aside, that’s also just not the aesthetic brands are usually going for when hiring women to popularize their products.

I would consider bringing a doll to the elementary school I work at on a special occasion, if the kids insisted I took a turn at show and tell or something. But it would be far too tempting for a small child to not touch, so she definitely wouldn’t stay in the classroom full time.

    47. Welp! I came back around on this issue

    48. I work as a nurse in ICU in a big hospital... not a good place to bring personal stuff...

    49. Im a FT student and have never brought a doll to class lol. But, I work Uber part time when I need extra pocket money. I always take at least one doll with me to work for the ride.

    50. What if all the seats in the uber get taken? Does the doll ride on your lap?

    51. I teach and would love to bring a doll to sit near my desk but my students are rambunctious (nice way if putting it) so I would be stressed about damage or accidents.

    52. I only do Uber eats. I dont want to deal with having strangers in my car. Picking up food to deliver is way easier than people. hahahaha

    53. That definitely sounds like a much better option! And it would certainly be nice to have some company then

    54. I work in a cubicle and I’ve taken one of my tinies with me to work on a few occasions, but he stays hidden and out of sight. I’m worried what my coworkers would think if they saw him, but I like knowing he’s there. c:

    55. I won't even leave a book unattended at the workplace. People will steal your stuff and not think twice. I would never take a doll to work! Even if it weren't stolen, it would only take a bump for it to smash to pieces on the floor. And, besides, I'm very introverted and socially anxious and do my very best not to draw attention to myself. I don't want a "conversation piece" at my desk attracting people to speak with me.

    56. I have in the past. Buuuuuut, I work in a doll store so... I mean, I keep them mostly locked in my locker except when I want to show them off to coworkers. Which I've done in the past. Two of them are actually BJD collectors as well, and I think everybody on staff collects dolls of some kind.

    57. I work an office job and have my own desk (and office), but I probably wouldn't. I am not sure my coworkers would do much other than think it was mildly weird but I work with a pretty cool bunch. While they look super cute sitting around, I'd rather have them at home safe in storage.

I did have an in-depth conversation about my dolls with my boss once and he was totally creeped out but wanted to hear more. Without pictures, he kept saying he was getting Chuckie vibes. But he's an interesting dude with like, six lifetimes worth of stories and weird friends, so no judgement there I don't think.

    58. I used to work at a computer game company with small offices and cubicles. We all had tons of toys around--like action figures and nerf guns. I'm not sure I'd have brought my dolls because it's more of a male-oriented atmosphere and I don't think they'd appreciate it... but maybe! (I'd worry about keeping it safe, though. Not that it could get stolen, but maybe knocked over or mishandled.)

    59. I work at my campus' library and I've talked a lot about my dolls since I am making them the main focus of my senior thesis. I definitely could take a doll with me to work since I just sit at the front desk to help patrons. I just wish to first have a more impressive outfit for whichever doll I take. Sometimes it feels like the outfits I make don't do the hobby justice and that since I'm the only person on campus I know of in the hobby I have to step up and show the more experienced artful side.

    60. I've brought a tiny with me to work before on a previous job during a slow week.

As for my current position, does working from home and having your dolls in the same room qualify? If that's the case, then yes, they're here everyday./
