I'm a stay at home mom now but I was a receptionist for many years. I didn't have a doll back then but I don't think I would have been distracted from work if had brought one. It really varies from person to person. Not only what type of job you have but what type of person you are. If you think you would want to play with them then don't bring them to work. For me I would have just liked to look at her. No more distracting than pictures of my family I had next to the computer.
The answer is: NO! No way. I think that my college's think I am childish. But I take my hobby as an adult seriously. When I retire and I would take one of my doll's with me. Only to show how beautiful they are. Some of my nearest college's now and see some photo's of them. But openly no one knows.
Almost all of my doll openings have been at work. So many of my coworkers are intrigued by them. So I stalk the tracking and as soon as I see "delivered" pop up, a friend and I take our break and jump in the car to grab her. When we get back almost everyone loves to see the doll arrive. Even if they are not in the hobby they know it makes me happy and have fun watching me so excited. Every once in a while Maggie is requested at work and spends her days on a coworker's desk who adores her. (At least once a week I get asked, "How is Maggie?" and my response it always "Still a doll".) Lately I have been taking my puki everyday but not taking her out. I work at a place where you could take some amazing pictures, and I keep thinking I will get a break and go have some fun with her.
Well... I'm not working yet, but I did bring my MD Miho to university once! xD Everyone was surprised ^^
Yup. I've taken my tinies with me everyday for the last two weeks. My work has been really crazy and unnecessarily stressful for the type of work I do, so having them around has kept me from going postal. A lot of my coworkers know about my dolls and they're always excited to see them. I kind of consider them to be unofficial aunties. Unfortunately, my resin babies have to spend most of the day in my locker. My unicorn girl did get to spend some time up in the reception area on Thursday. Normally I wouldn't leave her somewhere where I wasn't and she could get knocked over, but it was slow and I was going to be going to lunch in a few minutes. I honestly can't wait to have a job with a cubicle. I'd keep a few pieces of doll furniture in one corner.
Im a crossing guard for middle school kids, and tho i have never thought of taking my dolls with me, perhaps a photo of a guard stopping traffic for all of them to cross in the crosswalk would be cute! thanks for the inspiration!!
I work at an assisted living and I talk about them all the time. I brought my 60 cm Weylin in on my day off to show my boss because he kept saying he wanted to see him.
When I was working as a waitress or as an extra in movies, no. That just wouldn't work well, but I have brought my dolls to the costume shop the last time I was assistant designing for a play. I think my coworkers thought that it was pretty, but a little creepy. I found that funny because actually the actors thought they were very cool and asked me if all costume designers had them to make clothing for.
Never. Never ever! I don't trust customers OR my co-workers around them. They just wouldn't understand. Just the thought of bringing them to work makes me shudder!
Haha, I am working outside in the woods all day! That is no place for a doll. If I had a desk job I might consider it though, especially if I had my own office.
Nope... I work in an office but I would be too scared something would happen to them... I wouldn't care much about what people would say, I already have teddy bears on my desk, and I have photos of my dolls on my wall anyway and every one in the office knows about them.
no i dont bring my doll to work because i work in a restaurant and i dont want something happen to my doll, plus if i dont keep an eye on him while i'm busy at work, i'm scare that someone might walk out with him. I usually bring him to college.
Well I work at a Daycare, so it would, obviously, be a very bad choice for me to bring one of my dolls there...heehee.
I work in a restaurant as a waitress. There's never a day where I don't get covered in food. I also share a locker with a co-worker, so no. I would never bring a doll to work.
I work at a small hairdressing salon that can get rather humid and steamy so no, not in my case. Plus there is nowhere safe I feel I can leave him there.
I do actually bring mine in - I've got a rather fun desktop as a Systems Administrator, so I like bringing in my boys sometimes and having them sit on my desk. Somewhere on DOA is a thread I posted with pictures of my Yo helping me work
I don't bring my dolls to my work, because I'm a teacher in a secondary school and I'm afraid the children play and broke one of my precious bjd.
I work in a biology lab, so I have no shortage of eccentric coworkers who can appreciate another person's (somewhat) eccentric hobby. I'm just the administrative assistant, so I don't have a lab coat or have to work with centrifuges, so sometimes I bring Gryffin with me to sit on my desk and have people visit him when they need a break from their bacteria. Everyone treats him respectfully and with healthy curiosity, so it's a very safe environment, but I don't bring him very often. Most of the time he's so bored when I take him that he'd really rather just stay at home. When he's here, he just mopes around or plays cards when someone isn't coming to see him, so I usually let him stay in his room and appreciate him all the more when I go home and can take him out. At work, he's pretty, but I can't really do anything with him (because I'm working!), so unless there's a good reason to have him tag along (like a request), he stays put.
I wouldn't dare. I work in a warehouse, which would be dangerous for them, and it's full of toys, which would confuse the security when I left.
I work behind a counter in retail, and I'll bring them on occasion. There's no hazard to them where they sit, so I find it acceptable. If someone hasn't seen them yet, I'll bring them in, or as a friend said 'I want to see my sweetheart', I bring them. I'll sit them on the counter with our gift cards or a coffee cup or something of that nature. People don't seem to mind, but I do get a lot of weird looks from customers. Someone said to a manager that I made them 'uncomfortable' with the doll. My manger said 'Well, she brings them because she finds people like you uncomfortable to deal with.' If I worked in a different position, I probably wouldn't risk it. Like working on the floor or when I have to do the trucks, it simply wouldn't be practical nor safe for them.
I have taken my doll to work with me a few times. I work at a costume shop with a sewing department so the sewing ladies are always intrigued when I bring him in. On a side note I have had a few customers walk in with their dolls looking for little accessories they can use....the mini hats are always a win!
Once in a while I might bring one or two to work. I work in tech support so I have my own cube where I can sit one of them and fiddle with them occasionally during the day. Also, if I have to leave my desk, I drop them off with another coworker who watches them like a hawk. One of my supervisors always has to see who I've brought in
No, I wouldn't want to. When I'm at work, I like to focus 100% on work so I can get finished quickly and leave early. Plus I don't want to advertise to random people that I collect expensive dolls. When I'm working at my home office, I do keep a few on my desk, though. It's nice to take a mini-break from whatever I'm doing and look at them.
Actually no. I only brought them out for once, just to take photos. I would like to prevent them being touched by other people, especially small children.
I'm out photographing in the sun a lot, or moving around to get shots, so that's a definite no for that aspect of my job. Otherwise, I'm illustrating and crafting at home, so my dolls are with me all the time.
No I wouldn't take the chance that's way to scary. He may get damaged because I work around a lot of things that could mess him up. Not to mention I couldn't spend time with him and would have to leave him in the backroom or something. I wish I had a job that I could take him to though, that would be really great
Absolutely... maybe not my Feeple Chloe at 62.5cm because that would be a bit too attention demanding but my tinies? Oh yeah. I have a lovely little book shelf right next to my desk with plants and lights and my two little girls look great sitting there. I also have my own office so I don't feel weird leaving them there when I'm on break or anything.
Yes, I do! I actually have Matt at my side right now! I work as a secretary for a lawn company and it is a small franchise, there are only a total of four employees. The owners are a married couple, the wife has a day job, so she's never here, the husband and the other guy employed here are out working on lawns all day...and I am left in the office by myself, unless the resident cat is visiting. We are a private office on the owner's property, so I never see customers. Everything I do deals with being on the phone, on the computer or filing papers, so my doll is safe from danger or theft. It gets pretty lonely and since I get my paperwork done in the first two hours usually, I have nothing to do for the rest of the day except answer calls...and if its a slow day, it gets REALLY boring. The dolls make it fun. My boss has seen Hansel and told me I was a good parent for not leaving my "kid" in the hot car. :P
I work in a college library and have in the past brought an SD boy that I had. Seeing the different reactions was a bit interesting. XD Not sure I would really do it again though.
Not at my current job, anyways. I work at Wal-Mart so it just wouldn't be appropriate to bring anything but myself and my uniform onto the floor. Maybe when I'm out of University and start teaching I would depending on the grade, but not every day and not often. Probably on Halloween.
Right now "work" is school. And I have brought almost all of my dolls to school at some point. I love how some of my friends get as much joy out of them as I do so I love bringing them. They typically spend most of the day in thier sleeping bag in my locker where nothing can hurt them, but they come out for lunch. Once I'm out of school it would depend on the type of job I have, but if it wasn't like factory work or something dangerous I would have no problems bringing a doll.
cause i am still a student ,so i don't have the chance to bring my dolls to work. but i also don't bring my dolls to school.cause there are some people who do not know how to respect the dolls ~
I bring in my MSD to work on occasion. I have my own office and I usually only let her out of the bag while I am on a conference call or on my lunch break when my door is closed and others can not see her. I do however have a photo of her on my desk, but no one has mentioned anything about her yet.
i love my bjd very much and i always try to take them every place i go but that can be hard when you do not have a case
I couldn't see myself doing it every day, but since I have a desk job it may be harmless fun to bring them in once or twice. My coworkers are fairly chill people. I got all sorts of funny comments when I put the giant gold beckoning cat on my desk earlier in the year.
I would like to take one doll to my work. But I do not dare. Some co-workers know that I have BJD's so I would like to show them how beautiful they are. It is a shame that people do not appreciate these doll's!
I work in an office, alone for the most part. So I bring little Elly in to keep me company, and usually have something that needs sewn to work on if it's really slow. It was a slow day, so we stepped outside for some fresh air.
I love pictures of people's dolls at work. I have two jobs -- I work at Build A Bear and as a legal/personal assistant in a home law office. I can bring my dolls to both. At my legal assistant job, my girls can sit on my desk or ride with me in the car on errands, and it's nice just to hang out with them. At Build A Bear, I bring them on slow shifts (like weekday evenings) when I know we'll be hanging around doing nothing for a while. Last night I pretty much played with dolls for four hours and got paid for it. :P (Though I learned that I need a bigger memory card.) My co-workers at Build A Bear are intrigued by my girls. One girl thinks my MSD is really creepy (it's her shiny pupil-less eyes, I think) but loves my tiny. Customers are intrigued too -- one lady let Sprink play with her monkey's tail for a while yesterday. :P
I do film work as an extra, and No I wouldnt bring my dolls...id be scared id loose them. My other "Job" i guess is YouTube, I get paied to post videos so yeah, thats okay. When my PukiFee comes im taking her to school as a good luck charm for my GCSE's since she can fit in my pocket ahah! I also am doing my dolls for my Art GCSE to they will have to all come with me as I am doing faceups and costume work for my final piece. Wooooo dolls at school ;-)
My dolls regularly go in to work with me and sit on my desk. On another doll board I often post "on my desk today" photo's like this: Teddy
Well, I sort of do! They're part of my job! I am a professional tinker (I choose imaginator as my title here because otherwise people might think I'm a plumber or something), or what some may call an artist. Since my usual kind of job (making stop-motion animation) doesn't grant a very big salary, I incorporated ball jointed dolls into my crafting scheme. I already have sculpting and clothing/wig making skills because of my animation puppets. So now I'm busy building a small doll empire I made two BJDs who aren't for sale, and planning on making the next one on a commercial basis. Trouble is I can't find anyone to teach me how to handle casting under air pressure... I have a lot of experience with regular molds and different plastics and rubbers, but I don't know anybody nearby who could teach me the basics of dolly-casting... Ah well, I suppose I will find somebody sooner or later. For now I'm sticking to making neat little (or big) things for them. Mostly props, but I also built a custom wheelchair and some huge mechanical wings.
Mine are too big--and I have to walk around/multitask too much for me to be able to watch them all the time. I'd be terrified some unsupervised child would take off with them D:
Sounds like some people here have some awesome jobs! I don't work, but I'd never bring my dolls to school. It would feel ridiculous, since I'm there to study, not play/have a mascot. The atmosphere's just not right for dollies.
Oh god no, I can't even imagine. I do have my own desk in an office, but the nature of my job means that I might have to drop everything and leave on a moment's notice to go take care of something (I'm an Aflac associate). Thus my office is entirely unsupervised by me for a good chunk of the day, and that's not a risk I'm willing to take. ...besides, what's the fun if I'm not there to play with them?
Absolutly not. Even if my job were one where I could possibly bring a bjd in to work with me I still wouldnt. It seems very... strange. If I had a co-worker that did this I'd think so as well. For me it is important how I come across in a working enviorment, to both co-workers and customers, and lugging around a bjd at work screams inappropriate. Especially to those not in the hobby who just see a doll. Work is for work and hobbying is for home.
I would be distracted and I have no doubt I would be mocked and ridiculed daily for bringing a doll to work. I would never do that though, it's too dirty and he'd probably fall and break, if not be stolen.
I've brought my little Dragon Doll to work (to show her off - my co-workers wanted to see her) & I am now being cajoled to bring my Dana boy so I guess I'm bringing him on Halloween (we'll both dress up LOL) to parade about I have a cubicle job... I would NOT bring a doll every day to work - mainly because I would not want to take the risk of either the sunlight (I have a window!) or theft.
I take mine in all the time. I work in tech support and do have my own desk/cubicle. There's a MSD-sized wicker chair hidden in the corner where the resin-kids would sit out of sight as a few of my coworkers find them 'creepy'. I am fortunate that I work with a pretty trust-worthy crew --most are aware of the costs of the dolls I am apparently 'obsessed' with, but I can leave them unattended when I go for lunch or break. Once, I accidentally left Hantou on my desk overnight (I was really distracted that day), but I found him still sitting in the little chair when I returned all panicked the next morning.
Yep! Everyday I have one of them with me (they take turns). I work in a small retail shop, and they sit behind the counter looking cute, dusting, or holding signs. I can see them at all times, and a lot of customers are used to seeing them. My boss has decided they're good luck.
I have never brought my dolls with me to work, but I am considering taking my Resinsoul Boston Terrier and my LittleFee Bisou later on. I'd like to take some photos of them at work. But we'll see. I'll never take my SD boys to work. They're way too big. I wouldn't want to draw too much attention at the workplace. But it would definitely be so much fun to have a BJD in the office. It would be an awesome stress reliever!
Well... I wouldn't take my dolls to work (I'm a janitor) but I will take them to college. I go to art school so I don't get any weirder looks than usual. For me it would depend what kind of job I have whether to bring a doll or not. If I were a receptionist (which I sometimes am to fill in at my stepdad's company) I wouldn't bring one because I know a lot of people are creeped out by them. Also the truck drivers would probably make fun of me the whole time. My stepdad already does, but I don't mind, I think it's funny.
Personally, I like to keep my hobby life as separate from my "public" life as possible. I.e., I treat my dolls like underpants: they're private. I wouldn't bring them to work, to school, to my friends' apartments (because they aren't doll people- and even if they were it'd be iffy.) I just don't do it... it's kind of like, on the outside I'm your average college girl, and on the inside I'm a doll loving superhero... ahem. It's a bit early in the morning right now, but you get my point.
When I was in elementary school I used to bring my winx club dolls to school all the time and in Highschool I tended to bring a couple bratz or two to draw from. It's no different with my ball joint dolls now that I'm in college. If I was working and it was a desk job or something for sure I'd bring them. But once my Penelope's completed with her clothes and faceup, I'm definitely bringing her to school. It would give me a chance to show people my hobby since it greatly influences my art, and it might also introduce me to other doll owners who I didn't know existed at my school. Plus I can use her for art I also think I might be doing her faceup at school because I wont be getting the msc till around winter, and there isn't very good ventilation in my tiny townhouse.
Nope. Work is work and hobby is hobby. They are distracting and even though I work for a computer game company, I don't think it's very professional.
I used to bring some of my anime figures to work and put them on my shelves..until I had some of them disappear. Now, I don't bring anything that I would care about missing.
I definitely think it depends on where you work. If I felt comfortable with bringing my doll to work, as in her safety, I think I would. But that's because I work the front desk job at my dorm. I just sit there and help people and do homework, so having my doll out for all to see is fine by me. My work isn't very professional anyways. But yeah, if you worked somewhere where professionalism is needed.... I probably wouldn't bring her!
I do! I take my doll to work. She has a shelf next to my computer in my office. I work at an elementary school.
