Do you believe in haunted dolls? Do/could you have one?

Jul 11, 2018

    1. Hey y'all,

I'm personally pretty skeptical when it comes to ghosts and haunted things, but I wanted to know what you guys thought about it. Do you think a doll can be haunted? Have you experienced any spooky things with some of your dolls? And would you be able to own a doll that is supposedly haunted or has a "dark past"?

    2. I will never allow myself to own a haunted doll.. :(
I am a catholic and I should not believe in ghosts but somehow I experienced seeing two in the past.

Speaking of haunted dolls, my mom would tell me "Don't forget to have your doll blessed at the church once it arrives okay?" And I just laugh. But I'm sure everything is fine. :)

    3. Ehm... no.

    4. The idea of a haunted doll is super interesting to me, and I love hearing stories about them but I would never own one! It's too big of a risk to invite that sort of energy in regardless of how much I believe in such things.

    6. I’ve had the misfortune of owning an antique Victorian porcelain doll that was haunted....or if not haunted then I was messed with badly as a child since the dang thing moved on its own, at night. It was creepy As FUDGE and I’ve hated those types of dolls since.....bjds are a big exception though, there’s literally no mystery to their internal functions xD plus I can cleanse them if someTHING decides it wants to make itself a home -coughspiderscough-

    7. I don't really believe believe in it, however I do think objects can have souls. Maybe more as in give a certain aura/energy to their surrounding. Like my mom found a porcelain doll one day in the forest. The doll was in perfect condition but their was something off about it when she brought it home. Have to add that I like creepy looking things and this doll did not look creepy at all, more innocent. But I just could not trust it, and did not want to be alone with it. I could have seared it moved around at night since it never was in the same place in the morning. We eventually brought the doll away. I still have the rule with myself of never bringing a doll I find into my house.
Furthermore I never really had that idea of haunting with dolls. Maybe a little with the last face up I did, since it was inspired by Japanese ghosts and I painted Japanese lettering on it, translated into ghost. I double checked multiple times if it was just ghost translated and not evil ghostbefore plooing in the eyes (they say if you put the eyes into a doll the spirit will enters them or something), to be sure I did not trap an evil spirit in it if they exist haha

    8. I do think dolls can be haunted, really any object can hold strong emotional strife I guess (if it's old enough). I wouldn't own a haunted doll, I'm too sensitive as a person to be able to handle it.

    9. I would have to pass if I was ever offered a haunted doll to own. I love creepy dolls, I love movies like Chucky and Dead Silence, but when it comes to real life I have a sort of personal policy on things like ouija boards and haunted dolls. "I'm not 100% sure if it is true or not, but I have seen some things in life that definitely make me not brave enough to chance it."

    10. A haunted BJD I am skeptical of, but I did own another type of doll very popular to collect (Blythe) and she had several owners before me say that she is haunted. I never got the creepy vibes but I did rehome her and the person after me did too. She was a sad/neutral little clown girl.... makes me think maybe it’s just the concept or the way a doll makes someone feel. I could never look at a sweet little Lati Yellow for example and feel like she/he is haunted.

    11. It depends on if the spirit is benign or malicious.

    12. On another note we did try to visit the ‘Annabelle’ doll and GPS took us to a dead end road by a forest. Probably the most chilling feeling ever. We never did make our destination. My Mother’s boss grew up with and next to the Warrens and swears the stories of the doll are all quite true.

    13. Wow did you ever have a spider inside your dolls? That Victorian doll sounds really creepy.

    14. I dont believe in ghosts or curses or anything. That being said, if there was a such thing as a haunted doll, id love to have one:XD:

    16. To be honest, I'd like my doll to be alive, but maybe not haunted or possessed by a demon. I am a Catholic, too, and I am aware of this kind of things. Although, I'm going to buy a replica of Chucky doll and I think that many people will have problems with visiting me haha.

    17. I have/had some non-BJD dolls with... something inside them. With one it was fine, but the other two freaked me out and no longer live with me. I don't want a similar experience with my BJDs.

That said, I was fine the one time my first BJD made eye contact with me. It confirmed what I already knew, she was special.

    18. I would never want a 'haunted' doll. I'm not even sure how much I believe in ghosts/demons, but after watching both the Conjuring films, which I *think* were based on true stories, I'll think I'll pass on the idea of malicious spirits. Somehow though, I wouldn't think a modern BJD would be haunted, it's more like the old porcelain dolls that look like they might be possessed.

    19. The Conjuring films are indeed based on real events, although with Annabelle I'm pretty sure Hollywood took enough artistic licence with the story. lol Annabelle is indeed a real haunted doll. I personally find it funny that she's actually a Raggedy Anne doll. I own a Raggedy Anne doll, too. She was handmade for my grandmother the year I was born, so she's as old as I am. I used to drag her everywhere with me. When I was little she was at least as tall as me. I'd dressup in her clothes, too. lol And my grandmother gave her to me years ago so she's been with me for ages. I can't even imagine Anne being possessed by a demon or used as a conduit or whatever.

As for me, haunted dolls kind of fascinate me but I sure wouldn't want one in my house. I don't believe in "friendly spirits". Anything possessing an object or house or what have you is malevolent and looking to cause harm, no matter how friendly and innocent it appears. I wouldn't want to mess with that stuff and risk it escalating into something worse. I've watched way too many horror movies to risk that happening. :XD:

    20. The concept of haunted objects is very appealing to me, but I have had the good fortune of never receiving such objects.

I could read, hear, and watch horror stories all day, so I thought I could share the particular Spooked Podcast episode titled The Unicorn Prince. It is not about bjds per say, but it is about a porcelain doll. :aheartbea

      I hope you like it.

    21. I've now lost an hour trawling through eBay, and I have to say...if I were a haunted doll myself, I'd be a little insulted at being wrapped in bubble wrap and sold in an online auction. Like, "oh wow, my reserve price is a whopping twenty bucks. Consider yourself cursed, jerkface. I'm curdling the milk in your fridge and knocking over your favorite table lamp first chance I get."

      • x 13
    22. Ahahhahaha!!! I never thought about that one but wow.... maybe that’s what makes them stir things up? Makes you wonder if we are the ones who bring out the haunt.

    23. I do believe in haunted dolls, I believe any object can be haunted but the thing that makes haunted dolls extra creepy is because they look like miniature people. I'm sure you've heard of stories of haunted dolls in the past, there are some famous ones.
I would never own a haunted doll, in fact I was terrified of dolls for years because of the fear they may be haunted haha but bjds are a different thing to me (but I do have a doll who I swear sometimes moves slightly despite the fact I bought him new so there is no way he's had a dark past - but then again I believe dolls can gain souls when their owners give them a name and begin to think of them as something more than just an object :sweat )
My only experience was with a China doll not a bjd, she used to belong to a friend who wanted to downsize her collection and I thought she was beautiful so she gave her to me. I had her a grand total of 2 days haha. I had some friends over the first night and every single one of us just got this bad feeling around her and as it got darker we locked her in a room on her own and were scared waiting for something to happen, so I returned her at the earliest possible chance and I believe she was given to a charity shop by the friend who gave her to me soon after.

    24. It was so pretty at first...but when your doll moves locations in the middle of the night without anyone touching t....yyeaaah, she didn’t stay long...^^’

I’ve never had one in my dolls since I play with them too often, but one of my other friends in the hobby has, she freaked out when it came out of the torso while she was washing some dirt off of him....^^’ apparently she’d not moved him for so long he ended up gathering more than just dust...^^’

    25. OMG I'd scream, and probably drop my poor doll. Your poor friend! I mean, I'm sure it was a traumatic experience for the spider as well, since she probably thought she'd scored a nice safe home, but....brrrrrr!!!

      • x 2
    26. Yeah, she freaked out, almost threw the torso across the room but apparently she didn’t and it’s okay but yeah.....she vacuumes the parts now if she leaves them untended for longer than a few days with a handheld vacuum lol xD at least as far as I know, we haven’t talked in a few years xD

    27. I think it is possible for a doll to have energy. Energy can come from something, from human etc. but mosty I think some dolls can look a like something that we saw but it went to unconscious mind and when person will see doll that reminded something than can feel discomfort. Like some one was hurt in childhood by a person that has some similarity in the face like doll etc.

      • x 5
    28. I don't believe haunts are anything like the movies. I've seen my fair share of weird things I won't get into and not many of them were actually malicious. That said, a haunted doll wouldn't scare me, I'd just find it kind of curious that it decided to move THEN and not other times, lol. But if it did turn out malicious, I'd obviously shoo it off. .o

    29. I also think dolls can have energy and sometimes a certain presence. I have 2 dolls that belonged to someone in the hobby who passed, one doll was a favorite of hers from what I can tell/was told, and this doll has much more presence than any new one of mine. New and blank dolls from the company can really feel ~blank~ in personality to me which can be either good or daunting if no ideas come, lol. No presence at all.

    30. I've actually bought two "haunted" porcelain dolls. Nothing's happened yet :(

      • x 3
    31. Rationally, I don't believe in those things. But I wouldn't be able to help getting a creepy feeling if someone gave me a doll and then told me it's haunted. XP The power of suggestion is strong!

    32. I belive in haunted objects, but I'm doubting that any BJD's are old enoug to reach that state...yet.:XD:

However I do belive objects espicaly dolls, can have souls of their own. I try to make sure most of the cacarters of my dolls are at least modertly friendly, and nothing that might wish me harm...you know just in case. :aeyepop:

    33. I think dolls could be haunted. If anything seems off though I mean hey, nothing a little sage cleansing won't fix. (hopefully)

      • x 1
    34. I have seen a video about this possess doll which was bought on eBay. I wouldn't want to have one.

    35. I grew up in a very creepy house and experience too many things that I wish didn't or could explain. I wouldn't take any chances with haunted doll. In fact it's one of my many fears that one of my bjd somehow become a vessel. So I try to keep some quartz in my doll head as much as possible. Not sure if it work but worth the try. Best case scenario, it's all in my head and everything okay.

Side note I did buy some second hand Japanese doll from thrift store and I can't help but sense a present with them. Different than my bjd( fairly new and mostly in their box). They don't seem dangerous and I had them for over 5 years now so I think they are safe to keep.

    36. My friends are convinced my doll is gonna come alive and kill me in my sleep but I think she’s a sweet little thing.

Idk about BJDS but those old porcine baby dolls give me bad vibes and I dedicate think they can be haunted.

    37. I want to believe there is more to this world than what I can see yet everytime something odd happens I try to find a logical explanation for it.

I've had quite some experience with objects such as dolls and ball-jointed dolls that 'behaved' in a peculiar way but so far I am not afraid that something 'evil' might be at work. I try to keep a clear head and face my fears as I go.

I did once sell two heads I was not comfortable with to the same person and I feel much 'lighter' now they aren't in my possession anymore. I feel it's important that I don't keep anything with me that makes me feel uneasy or unhappy.

I'm not sure I'd ever use the word 'haunted' but I am very sure objects can store energy. If that actually makes them behave differently I couldn't say. I've had my fair share of experiences but I still can't explain all of them.

I don't mind either...some mystery makes life more interesting.

    38. Well....I have several hundred dolls and have even bought supposedly haunted dolls (nothing happened) so I'm skeptical. I believe my house is haunted. There is way too much going on to keep blaming it on the cat. Even my very religious husband says something is going on. He never believes in that stuff. We had one of those ghost hunting shows come out and they said the house and land is very haunted and that the ghosts are attracted to the dolls. I only had one "paranormal" experience with a doll and even that could possibly be explained away. Whenever I sell one I burn sage over it to clear out any ghosties though many collectors have asked me to leave the ghosts in..lol. Beware of "haunted" dolls for sale on ebay. They are always cheap dolls that even thrift stores can't sell. Notice you never see any valuable antique dolls being sold as "haunted". They don't need a fake ghost story to sell.
      ;)

    39. YES, YES and She's out to get me, HELP!

Seriuosly, sometime I found my dolls in weird pose in the morning but probably i just moved them in the night, I own some pretty scaring dolls but I'm not afraid they came alive, I hope so!

    40. I made a doll once who was an anthro coyote hybrid, but I felt very uncomfortable after a while with him, because in my tribe's culture, Coyote isn't a cutesy trickster, he's basically The Evil/Spiteful One in our stories. So he made me too fidgety and I sold him off.

Yes I believe things can be haunted but it's rare and pretty much never benign.

    41. I most certainly believe dolls can be haunted. Having lived in a haunted house when I was younger, I’m familiar with the feeling of “ghosts,” though I prefer to think of it as disembodied spiritual energy. I don’t believe that you have to be dead to leave a trace of this spiritual energy on an object, just like you can imbue crystals with positive energy. This could be part of the reason why “bonding” with dolls occurs and why the dolls we love most tend to make us feel so nice. As for whether or not I’d buy a doll with a dark past, heeeeeeeck no. Even if it’s not haunted, it would probably always have a bad energy to me. But what do I know, I’m just a crazy person.

    42. I don't believe in ghosts/possession and the scariest about The Conjuring was that the Perrons bought a house without doing a site visit first. I know that it's like a thing that people in horror movies make terrible decisions but COME ON.

      • x 6
    43. I have a very large collection of haunted ,possessed, and spirited dolls. Probably at least a few hundred. None are bjds though. Some dolls have human spirits attached, others have Demons, which aren't evil. They are the Gods of ancient religions older than Judaism and Christianity. I have dolls with vampire spirits, fairys, djinn, and many other types of living entities. Dolls with Demons attached are my favourite as I bond very well with Demons and Demons seem to be the most active of my collection.

    44. I've had enough spooky experiences to believe that dolls could be haunted, and I just recently bought my first second hand doll and well uh, think he might be a little haunted, but that's ok, I still love him.

Though I mean maybe what he did to be classified as haunted could be debunked but yeah
basically what happened was I was making him a wig and I set him down on the counter to wet the wig a little to get it to lay flat and when I turned around his little head was turned to look directly at me. I had been feeling really weird that night and at one point I thought he was breathing it might have just been because I was sleep deprived but uh, yeah. I wonder who's in there?

    45. I say I am a skeptic, but I'm also the person who is known for being weirdly convinced that wearing the right bow in my hair improves sales figures....

Though at the rate I spoil my dolls with fancy stuff, I'd be really insulted if a haunted spirit in a doll was wrecking my stuff... sell that jerk to some rando on craiglist. lol

I don't think I'd buy a doll stated as haunted. I feel like it's just some charlatan trying to puff up something unremarkable.

      • x 2
    46. I'd be very interested in a haunted doll... Well honestly I've always been interested in supernatural phenomena but what's happened every single time is that the interesting stuff disappears as soon as I try to measure it :(

Either none of what I've managed to find has ever been real, or my notebooks and spreadsheets are the most effective banishing tool ever and I should switch careers to be an exorcist, haha ☆

      • x 1
    47. I believe in spirits, afterlife, and reincarnation... But honestly I don't think I really believe in hauntings! I think there are typically explanations for just about anything that could be considered a "haunting." Even some of the most notorious cases in history (of possession or hauntings) I think could probably be explained by chemical imbalances or other behavioral changes if we could go back in time and revisit them with modern technology.

In an abandoned building I'm more afraid of an unstable homeless person than a ghost.

So when it comes to dolls, I do not think they could be haunted. I like to imagine they have personalities and design characters for them, but I don't consider my doll-characters and more real than my roleplay characters. It's just a fun hobby I have and I don't believe a real spirit could or would posses an inanimate object.

    48. Love reading everyone's stories in this thread!
I believe in ghosts because it's just more fun to think they're real than to be a skeptic. I've also seen a ghost before, or what I'd like to believe was a ghost (a grey blurry person in old fashioned dress appearing in a candid photo where there was no physical person). In my childhood home there were a lot of weird happenings that I just accepted as normal, but when I moved to a decidedly not haunted house the feeling inside it was drastically different. I think a spirit would have to be ridiculously strong to cause anywhere near the type of havoc that happens in the movies.
I do think anything can be haunted, really, but I don't think I would intentionally collect haunted objects. I can certainly see the appeal though, especially for people who haven't experienced hauntings and are curious what it's like.

    49. I am fostering this porcelain doll that was beloved by it's former owner, she was displayed lovingly and picked up often.
I promised that I'd find a good home for her. She's a doll with a loving-hopeful spirit of her own.

      • x 1
    50. Well...all I know is that if I were a wandering spirit, I'd wander. Who wants to sit on a shelf all day, staring at a wall for decades and then ultimately winding up in the garbage dump? And no, I do not believe that a consciousness without solid form can make a host object get up and toddle around. Maybe I'm just jaded, but to me, the idea of an intelligent creature inhabiting an inanimate object does not seem likely. I just can't think of a single reason that they would wish to do so! :sweat

    51. Idk if I would own one knowingly, but I believe. I find all things paranormal fascinating. Never experienced anything myself though.

    52. Oh I would love to have a doll with "soul". Not exactly haunted but with "something" in there if you know what I mean. :)

      • x 2
    53. I believe in ghosts! Not sure about haunted objects but I think dolls would be a likely candidate if such a thing exists. BJDs, at least the kind I collect, probably less likely than other types. My girls especially are all brand new, haha.

But if I found a doll I was in love with AND was haunted or had a dark past? Jackpot! I kind of love the idea of my dolls having a soul anyway (part of me can’t get past the idea of everything having a soul of sorts; even as a kid, when I bought a plush, I felt bad for the other toys I didn’t bring home). If they literally did then maybe my talking to them and feelings wouldn’t be so strange. LOL.

      • x 1
    54. I wouldn't be surprised if a doll was haunted. There are some real cursed looking dolls out there so it's not much of a leap.

    55. I have over 200 dolls, I lost count after that, I have porcelain, reborns, barbies, etc, etc, and of course bjd's. I have gotten some at thrift shops, one came from and auction and I inherited that one from my grandmother, it's in a sealed case, makes it look creepy. I bought my mother an old composition doll from the 1920's, she had a composition doll she had broke as a child. I bought an old Raggedy Anne off eBay, one of the vintage Knickerbocker dolls, just like the original Annabelle (not the ugly movie doll)

I have give dolls ample opportunity in my house to be haunted, but nope, not a one of them. I am not saying some of them don't look a little creepy at times but, nope, no haunted dolls. I think it would be kind of awesome to have one. I actually do believe in ghosts and things that go bump in the night, it's just currently there is nothing spectacular about where I live or my possesions.

    56. Should I start to worry?:shudder

    57. I ONLY collect spirited BJDs. My main collection is of haunted items, my bjd collection is secondary and they must be spirited. I own 1 SD and 4 MSDs and they all moce aroynd and do their own things most of the time.

    58. No thank you. I don’t want any haunted doll. Just watching the Chucky movies gives me chills. But I do believe dolls can become haunted possessed... :arainclou

    59. I'm too much of a materialist (the philosophical idea that there is nothing beyond matter, not the 'I want more stuff'-attitude) to believe in ghosts or spirits, unless they are somehow a function of their body. I don't do 'separation of mind and body' (Descartes had some nice ideas but this wasn't one of them), and I doubt a hunk of porcelain or resin is a complex enough body/piece of matter to give rise to a consciousness.
That doesn't mean I don't get massively creeped out by some dolls (I've had a full-size female mannequin in my room since I was a kid and I still cannot go past her at night without turning on the light), or that I don't get a 'feel' for their personality as it were. I talk to them, I feel like they're real persons. I just think this is a feature of humanity's quite remarkable ability to project our emotions onto inanimate objects, and to anthropomorphize everything, especially if it's already human-looking.
Despite knowing better, I feel empathy for objects like pans or books or furniture; it doesn't seem so weird to have an even stronger sense of 'feeling like they have a consciousness' when we're dealing with objects that have explicitly been designed to be humanoid.

As for independent movement... This of course only goes for BJD, but given the tension of that elastic I'm not exactly surprised when I occasionally get a slap in the face :XD:
