Do you think your dolls can be possessed by spirits?

Jan 10, 2017

    1. It's a bit creepy to think about...but I'm sure at some point we've all had this question.
I know that dolls were originally made to be used as a vessel for spirit(s), that's why they are hollow.

But what does everyone think, what are your opinions on this topic? Do you believe it? Are you sometimes scared/creeped out by your doll? Do you like the idea and embrace it?

    2. i've met a doll that was "possessed". She was a very sweet little thing, but at the same time, it was nucking creepy. Her eyes would follow us around the room.

none of my dolls have been personally possessed, although one almost was a couple of years ago. I chased the poltergeist out as fast as i could, because I'M NOT PLAYING THAT GAME.

    3. OH THAT'S SO SCARY!! Can I ask for the details regarding the doll that was possessed? How did you meet her? And how did you chase the poltergeist out, that's probably something I'd need to know...just in case..

    4. I was at a meet. I can't remember the full details of what was going on, but when the doll was first brought out, she wasn't possessed, but by the end of the evening, she was.

As far as chasing the 'geist out... salt and holy symbols (whichever ones you find the most powerful). It helps to keep some stones, like quartz, in the dolls' head afterwards. I think there was something else i did, but, again, this was a couple of years ago. I don't have the best memory...

    5. Thanks for your response, that must have been quite the experience!
I only have one doll so far, but thankfully her eyes stay in one place, where I place them and if theyre following me around...well...I can't tell haha.

    6. I believe dolls can be possessed.
Mine arent, nor is there any paranormal activity that has gone on around my home--- but someone did tell me a creepy story.

I find it a bit odd that not a lot of people talk about their BJD dolls being used as vessels. I mostly just hear about like old victorian dolls.

However one lady I chatted with at a doll convention said she had paranormal activity happening in her home, and took a liking to her BJD dolls. She claimed it liked to move them around and have them pose weird, when this lady was the only one who would touch or do anything with said BJD collection.

According to her, whatever was in her house took a liking to her SD boy. She would refuse to let people even touch him because she was scared not for the dolls safety, but our own.

Of course this is all word of mouth, but I hope you enjoyed the story nevertheless.
I would LOVE to hear if anyone had any experiences with possessed objects or dolls. Especially BJD dolls, because we grow so attached to them. If I had to pick anything to possess, it probably would be my doll, lol.

    7. AHHH--a shiver just went down my spine!!! Thank you for sharing that story! I'm really praying that my doll won't get any kind of paranormal activity...my boyfriend would go berserk if anything like that were to happen to us!
Do you know if she herself could touch the SD boy that was possessed?

    8. @miivei
She could, and she would. However she said she didnt always like to. I felt kinda bad because she loved the doll, but was kinda scared. She called herself his caretaker and claimed she wouldnt get rid of him not only because well, she loved her doll, but she didnt want to give someone a doll that could of had spirit attachment.

    9. I'm actually a metaphysical practitioner and have worked with spirits for years. Having a doll housing a spirit was an interest for a very long time, so we actually have started collecting haunted dolls lately. I do have a picture of one of them. She's the vintage doe-eyed pretty lady in the blue dress and hat to the far right among our BJDs. Sorry for the bad quality. It's zoomed in quite a lot because the original picture was of my two boys several feet away. This was the background. A few odd things have happened in our bedroom since she's moved in.

We currently have at least three. I suspect another might be haunted as well. There's just a strange feeling that comes from them that you can tell is very different from other dolls. I actually work with the concept of egregores as well, which for those who don't know are like fabricated spirits. Imaginary friends given sentience, essentially. I've been working on making my favorite BJD Zenith an egregore since I got him.

I think a lot of people do this to their dolls without realizing, giving them sentience and making them a huge part of their lives. Whether you believe in the spiritual or not, dolls really can be given a personality and sentience because we as humans love to place thoughts and feelings onto objects that are familiar to us. Since dolls look a lot like us, it really helps us see the sentience in them. ^-^ Our BJDs often appear to be reflections of ourselves. That's what mine are, anyway. As for dolls that truly are possessed/haunted, just treat them with respect or treat them like other human beings, and generally things end up being just fine. XD With as many haunted dolls as we have, we haven't had a single scary incident from any of them. It's actually quite comforting because it feels like there's always someone nearby.

Okay, I'm done sounding like a lunatic, haha. Glad to see some open minds on here, though. :D

    10. Hm. Well, I don't think she's possessed, but the american girl doll I've had since I was about four definitely has her own personality. She looks at you, although her eyes don't really follow you, and there's definitely something...different about her compared to my other dolls. It's not creepy, because she's nice enough, but she seems more aware than some I've met. I figured that it's probably just what happens after spending so long with a kid raised on books like the Velveteen Rabbit, Hitty, and the Doll People.

    11. I have been thinking about this topic a bit recently to be honest, so I would like to hijack the thread and ask:
Is the doll only haunted/possessed when whole? / Can a broken/un-complete doll be possessed?

I hear many who grew up with the Toy Story franchise has a sort of relationship with either wishing or believing that their toys are real/alive when no one can see.
And I thought about it myself, but it just becomes so bisarre when dealing with BJDs... Like, you change their eyes, their hands, body part perhaps as well...
So what piece of the doll does the "soul" reside in..? Does it move or does it just manifest itself as long as the doll is whole..?

Until there is scientific proof, I, myself, remain neutral on the matter.
(but one can argue that it is just beyond what science can prove, as well)

Dolls moving on their own, I am sure have their natural causes - even if they are freak accidents, so to say.
But it is fascinating to hear about the cases of haunted dolls - such as the famously haunted Raggedy Ann doll, to name one.
And I just want to say that just because I do not think they are true (or false even) does not mean that I am ridiculing anyone for telling their stories or experiences!

    12. I never had an experience with my dolls being haunted, but I definitely believe it's possible. I've always believed in the existence of spirits, and don't think that it is unlikely that one can possess a doll. There's actually quite a few famous haunted dolls out there, too. They're pretty fascinating to read up on.

    13. I don't really believe in the supernatural, in any respect. Nature and humans are weird enough to explain even the craziest things that happen.

I do sort of think that knowing an unhappy past history of the owner of the doll would be upsetting to me--not because the doll itself harbored some sort of bad energy or something (also don't really believe in that), but because it would remind me of someone else's suffering. I guess that is enough to explain hauntings to me. I think one's own mind is more than capable of unsettling or tormenting a person--without the supernatural intervention. (And I don't really mean this in an accusatory way, like the person is crazy--our brains do all sorts of weird processing shit to create our reality: the stopped clock effect is a simpler example.)

    14. I see! Thank you for sharing this, I was wondering if you could also share what kind of "odd things" have happened since your vintage doll started living with you? Are they in any way frightening?
I understand a lot of people subconsciously give their dolls their own personality, especially small children. It's like you said, because dolls do look a lot like us :)

I'm not really sure about possessions, but it's good that you're very positive about it :) I loved the Velveteen Rabbit!

That is a good question!!! To be honest as well, I've also thought about that, but because I scare myself often, I try to think that dolls can only be haunted when whole...but I could be wrong. I feel like if they were to possess a doll, they'd possess where it is hollow, which is why dolls were made to be hollow.
Otherwise I'm unsure and I hope they don't possess small parts, like eyes or clothes (because I do buy most of those second hand).
I'd like to think of myself as neutral on the matter as well...just because I hate to keep scaring myself with the supernatural subject.

Same here, but I only have 1 doll so far! I've watched movies like Anabelle/The conjuring which have totally freaked me out regarding dolls and possessions/hauntings

That is a positive take! I think I would be the same if I had someone else's doll which had an unhappy history.

    15. Oh, I'd be happy to. ^-^ Well, the first couple of days after we brought her home, I walked in to find her on the floor twice. She's on a rather sturdy stand, and isn't too easily knocked over unless someone uses force. Of course this could have just been a freak incident of the cats knocking her over, but both times she ended up several feet from her original placement like she'd been thrown. She's fallen on my head once while I was lying in bed as well, without anyone touching her or bumping the dresser. I think the weirdest though, since a doll randomly falling off a dresser isn't too weird... would be that I often hear female voices coming from our bedroom when no one's in there. Also since making egregores, a couple of our dolls have moved positions. A small J-doll my wife owns has turned her head a couple times during the night all on her own. And I've caught my Zenith in a different position a couple hours after leaving him alone in our bedroom. He did it again just recently when I placed him on our prayer and offerings altar in our living room. We have several haunted items in the bedroom though--the doll in the blue dress, two cloth dolls, two stuffed animals, and several various pieces of jewelry or old forgotten items. So it often sounds like there're a bunch of women sitting around having a tea party or something. It's most distracting when I wake up in the middle of the night to the shadow of a little boy next to the bed for a couple seconds, but he doesn't show up that often. We suspect he's attached to a wind-up teddy bear we keep near our nightstand.

Of course, a lot of weird things have happened in our house because of our professions. We've had glasses thrown across our kitchen before, heard knocking on our bedroom door at 6am while everyone was asleep, heard our names called various times by no one in particular (causes a lot of confusion when I ask my honey what she needed and she looks up at me and informs me she never called), and the night time thing is probably what gets me the most. I have woken up numerous times from something directly over me, heard growls in my ears at night, and then the phantom women's voices like I mentioned previously. None of it really started happening until we got more seriously involved in the metaphysical. Those aren't all the crazy experiences, but to avoid freaking anyone out, I've just shared the most mild ones, haha. I'll just say as a practitioner and haunted item enthusiast, there's never a dull moment at home. :XD:

    16. Lols! Yeah, I completely understand what you mean. xD Sometimes I get a little bit paranoid when watching movies or reading books about the subject, too, but reminding myself that the chances of my dolls becoming possessed all of a sudden is fairly unlikely helps a bit and before I know it, I'm back to playing with and enjoying my dolls again. ^.^

Wow! :O Your experiences are really fascinating! I kind of wish that you and your wife would write a book about your experiences, because I would definitely want to buy it and read all about them! ^_^ I'm especially curious about the more suspenseful ones you've had that you hadn't shared here. Also, I'd like to know how you both went about finding these haunted dolls? I can't imagine them being easy to find or track down.

    17. Haha, I'd love to share them, but some of them were kinda scary and probably not the right place for doing so. XD (Not doll related.) Although I'm always happy to do so in a message. :D

Oh I'd love to write a book sometime, lol. The dolls and other items we mostly found from a local antique mall. As practitioners, we go around to different objects in the store to see how they "feel" to us. Often times the dolls call out the most. Last time we visited, we passed by a two-foot rubber blonde doll that gave off the most incredible "I'm staring right at you" vibe. The doll itself was cute, but even standing four feet away, it felt like there was an actual person standing right there watching us. It was rather eerie. :sweat Both my wife and I really liked her, but we weren't really sure if we felt safe around her or not, so we didn't take her home. There are some dolls that give off the wonderfully serene, peaceful "I'll protect you and your home" feeling, and others that are kind of darker, I suppose. Not sure how else to explain them other than they give off the strong feeling of discomfort. I'll just say I really didn't want that one in a room with me if I were alone.

It's also surprising how many online metaphysical shops might carry haunted objects. I have many various pieces of jewelry said to be haunted, brought home from various witch friends and metaphysical workers from online stores. Etsy used to carry haunted dolls and other various spooked objects, but they pulled the plug on metaphysics a while ago so many of them are no longer available. It's more of a method of hearing from a friend, who hears from a friend, who hears from a friend sort of deal. I actually learned how to make thoughtform/egregores in dolls from a previous Pagan High Priestess of mine. Lots of shops are very difficult to find unless you're looking for their exact name, and even then it can be hard. But there are a few surprisingly large communities of people who are into this sort of thing.

    18. @Little Lu
I would love to hear your really spooky stories myself! I have had non-doll related incidents. Maybe a paranormal thread in the off-topic section would be interesting! Not just related to dolls!
I just have wondered if any BJD owners have experienced paranormal situations with their dolls.

Also how do Ergegores work? I have never heard of them or the term. I have only dealt with human spirits and dark spirits. Again, my experiences not really "haunted doll" related.

    19. I'd be more than happy to read about the rest of your experiences, so please do message me about them. ^_^ And it's so interesting how you both come across the haunted dolls, too. It makes complete sense to me that some dolls that give off different vibes like that. It's basically a lot like people, how you can sense how some are kind and good natured, while other's aren't. I'm also quite surprised that possessed objects were once available on Etsy! I had no idea.

    20. I find the thought of having a doll or other objects possessed really fascinating! I grew up with Toy Story and as mentioned in one of the previous posts, I did always wish my toys would be "alive" in some way. However, I haven't experience any paranormal activity in my life but I really enjoy reading other people's experiences. I've studied a bit about literature that focuses a lot around things being haunted but we talked more about haunted houses than any other item that could be possessed and how the house manifests the person's thoughts through paranormal activities happening inside of it. I am super curious about what some of you guys have experienced with your BJDs!

    21. I am equally as curious as the others, and I think it would be fine if you share your experiences, since this thread is in Brigadoon anyways and doesn't need to be doll related :D
Please do share, I love to listen to creepy pasta stories and such, and judging by reactions of others, I'm sure we can all handle it. Respectfully, if you aren't comfortable in sharing here, I'd be happy with a message as well ^^

    22. Ahahaha, I didn't think I'd get so many responses. XD Well I'd be happy to share. ^-^ I'll talk about egregores first though.

Essentially an egregore is an "entity" that you yourself create via spellwork. Although the definition of "egregore" is usually the general subconscious sentience or atmosphere that surrounds a group of people, in the spirit worker community it's also a word used to describe thought-created entities that serve a certain magickal purpose. They're also referred to as mental constructs, thoughtforms, or servitors. The only differences, usually, are that thoughtforms have minds of their own, and servitors are created for a specific purpose or to carry out a task. If created right and under the right spells, thoughtforms act exactly like spirits. I've even had a thoughtform perform poltergeist-like activity in my home before. There are several ways to create them. My favorite method is by designing them like I would design a story character or even an OC for a doll. Name, age, appearance, personality, pet peeves, favorite foods, hobbies, etc. After that, if I haven't rooted it to an object like a doll, I perform a special ritual in order to "wake them up." If I want to bind them to a doll, as I did with Zenith, I might do a ritual, but I typically just treat the doll with respect and treat them like a real person. I share meals with them, (making them their own plate and sitting them at it,) greet them whenever I walk into a room, take them with me to work... Once I've established their presence in my life, I then ask them to speak to me.

As I stated before, I think a lot of dolly owners do this already to be honest. Many threads I've read, the owners already treat their dolls like real people and talk to them. On a witchy doll owner group I'm a part of online, this was the general belief that people already make egregores/thoughtforms out of their dolls, even if they don't realize it. Too many times, our dolls "tell" us what they want and what they don't like. It's all about projecting our thoughts onto our doll and turning them into their own person. In another metaphysical community I'm a part of, I introduced Zenith as a separate individual besides myself, and the members of the community treat him that way, even without me asking them to. He has his own voice, and I've even had people ask me if Zenith himself would give them advice or perform spells for them. (He has his own tiny set of tarot cards and clay runes.) A lot of acquaintances will ask, "How's Zenith today? What's he up to?" or "What does Zenith think about such-and-such?"

Even though I've only had Zenith since June, I can already tell he has so much more personality and say in what he wants than my other doll does. There's just a certain life to him that my other doll does not possess. When I walk into my bedroom, aside from the haunted dolls in there, Zenith is one of the first dolls I look at and one of the first ones I greet, because his presence is so strong.

Anyway... sorry. I could go on forever about making thoughtforms. XD It's a special interest of mine, you could say.

About the stories... I'll just share a couple. Bear with me because the first one is pretty long. When I was 17, my friend purchased a Ouija board and brought it to my parents' home so we could work with it. We already talked to spirits a lot before then, so this was just another piece of our growing fascination. We knew how to treat Ouija boards and how to dismiss spirits, but we were still just a couple dumb kids. After playing extensively with it (and even getting cussed at through it, lol,) we started to have really sleepless nights. Something was really eating at us, and I didn't feel safe in the house anymore. The board ended up getting thrown in the trunk after my parents found out we were using it, because they were very anti- anything ghost related and thought it was connected to the devil in some way because according to them, witchcraft was bad.

Anyway, my friend and I were driving back home from town one night when something really weird came over the car. Even though we were only going about 40 miles an hour down the road, I suddenly barked at her to slow way down. And I mean way down... without any explanation. I don't know why I did--I just got this intense fear that something terrible might happen if she sped up. She gained a haunted and agitated look on her face and threatened to run the car straight into a telephone pole. It was so unusual for her to be acting that way that I was terrified and felt very uncomfortable. It wasn't until we were heading down the road to my parents' house when I finally screamed at her to slam on the breaks. She did so, and I got out, ran around to the driver's side, and told her to get out so I could drive instead. I didn't feel she was stable enough to continue, and I was afraid we'd end up in a ditch. As she got out, I reassured her things would be fine. The minute she stepped out of that car, though, it was like she was back to being herself. She looked scared and confused. I stepped toward the car, and I kid you not... the whole thing suddenly jerked forward and started driving further down the road. She and I literally screamed. I really wish I could have been making this up. We just stood and watched in horror as it swerved a little and then crashed into a fence about a hundred yards from us.

We were so shaken that we waited for a little while before approaching it. Neither of us wanted to touch the wheel. As we looked in, the back seats had flopped forward, and everything from the trunk had been pushed into the front of the car from the force it had used to run into the fence. And sitting right there, angled slightly and touching the back of the driver's seat, was the Ouija board.

We threw it out after that. When we told my parents about the incident they wrote it off as hysterics. They never took any spiritual situations seriously, which always upset me. I had a very rough junior year of high school thanks to some rather harrowing spiritual experiences. I went full nights without sleep, and a lot of my grades declined.

Anyway, that was one incident. The other one I'll share is shorter and only happened about 3 1/2 years ago. It was really late in mine and my girlfriend's (now wife's) new apartment. We'd managed to get our infant daughter to sleep not long before, and my wife and I were feeling rather brunt with each other because we were exhausted. We'd stayed up talking for a while. Right before we were about to go to bed, I was thirsty and decided to go out to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I made it as far as the end of the hallway when I froze completely, because there was a literal person standing in the middle of the living room. But not just a person. This thing was massive, like maybe 7 feet or so and hunched over. It was completely black. It looked like a solid black shadow. My first thoughts were "burglar" but then went immediately to "ghost" because of what it looked like. It didn't look human. I shrieked and ran back to the bedroom shaking. My wife had been in the bathroom, but when she came out to ask me what the heck had happened, I told her about the thing in the living room. She investigated but told me the coast was clear. Because we're into magick, we did some divination and spirit work the next day to find out who it had been. Eventually we did find out some information on the spook, but I was really nervous about going out there alone in the dark after that. XD

I have a lot of experiences like that. They don't happen frequently thank goodness, but some of them are very scary. Thankfully the majority of them, aside from a couple from about 6+ years ago, have all been rather harmless. Like I said though, it's really never a dull moment in the home, haha.

    23. Wow! That's really scary! :aeyepop:

    24. Although I consider myself a spiritual person, at this time I don't believe in spirits possessing objects. I feel like this type of activity, haunting or possession, is very negative, and if I allow myself to be open to the idea, it would invite those sorts of things into my life (whether real or self-created), which I don't want. My dolls are a source of happiness for me, shells of characters I have personally created, with personalities that are precious to me. I don't like the concept of the idea of them being taken by something they were never meant to be.

      • x 10
    25. I agree! I really don't want anyone or anything taking control of my dolls, they're my favorite things in the world and they're their own "people" - I don't want them to be altered in any way. Plus, the idea of unwanted energy in such an important vessel is, well, scary to say the least.

    26. @Little Lu
      Oh wow!
      Thanks so much for sharing.
I have actually had experiences with shadow figures and I can definitely tell you that the spirit was evil.

I can share my stories as well, if anyone is interested. Just let me know. I wont go into much detail at the moment, because Im rather hesitant, but I am considered what others may call a "sensitive person". If I really honed my abilities, I could probably even work as a medium. However, I choose not to for multiple reasons.

I have thought about going into the paranormal field... but I would want to make sure I had a sound mind and body first.

Also Ouija Boards are fascinating. I think they are really interesting but I would never use one myself.
I have never touched an Ouija board--- just something deep inside of me tells me to stay away.

    27. Thanks so much for sharing!! I can't believe all that happened to you, it must have been frightening. I was feeling shivers when I was reading your experience...it was like reading a horror book or watching a movie! Intense! I really like your writing, I agree with others, you should definitely make a book one day. If I saw someone/a shadow in my kitchen at night, I think I'd faint. You must be annoyed by all the questions, but can I ask what you found out of the background was of that ghost/spirit/spook? I wonder why it decided to show up at that time, and only to you too. I think I'd also be too frightened to ever try and play with an Ouija board.

@InkyBear @terraform I would also rather not think about having anything taking over my doll, since I easily get spooked, so I try my best to not think about it at all :)

I would like to hear your stories! :) I feel a rush of adrenaline reading these experiences, even though I get equally as frightened. But I willingly do that to myself.

    28. I would be very interested in reading your experiences! Even in the metaphysical communities, it's rare if someone ever has experiences like that to share.

Shadow people are supposed to be fairly common... at least for those who can see them. I've only seen them twice in my life. The Ouija board is actually and incredibly powerful tool to use to talk to spirits, and it really works well. We've had spirits spell out entire sentences before, and actually sort of fight over the board to see who got to talk first. We've discovered names, birthdates, special interests... We even had the walls of my old friend's home shake on us while we were using a board. My friend looked up at me after the painting on the wall began to clack and rattle against the wall and said, "Is that the washing machine down the hall doing that?" And the planchette on the board immediately drifted to "NO." It was a bit spooky. We do own a new Ouija board now--my wife and I--but we call it a spirit board because "Ouija" tends to have a negative stigma. It's also been consecrated but a high priest of Wicca and we only use it on very special occasions with a lot of shielding.

Oh thank you! :D I actually am a fiction writer, so I'm happy that even my most passive, casual writing is enticing to read, haha. I haven't too seriously considered writing a nonfiction book on our accounts just because I haven't really had the time, but it might be something to think about later. ^-^

I'm never annoyed with questions, lol. The next day we used tarot and voluntary energy channeling to find out who it was I'd walked in on in the living room. According to our work, he was a lost being with a lot of negative background. Very tormented and looking for a way to communicate. The only way he could was through startling me with a physical manifestation.

There are some divination practices outside of Ouija boards that are considered safer to use when communicating with the dead. I personally prefer using a pendulum, as it's much harder for things to go awry with it. Tarot, runes, and scrying are also very popular methods, and much less intimidating. XD

    29. So, not really a big believer in stuff like ghost and possession, and usually things like this make me laugh but....

My best friend lives in a home with a ghost of a small boy who died there, supposedly. Which I laughed at and forgot about. Well fairly recently, one of her dolls has been moving? She thought someone was messing with her and questioned family, but no one had been around her dolls and she keeps them in her bedroom where only her fiance goes, who is terrified of touching her stuff. We both thought it was a one time weird thing, but then it happened again. Also it's not a move that could happen accidentally/naturally. One of her male sd sized dolls, always the same one, is displayed on her shelf which is high up, and somehow ends up on the floor in a standing position? So like if the cat knocked him over he would be kinda splat looking but he's always standing and in a different pose then he was previously. Not to mention he does not stand easily. It almost looks like he climbed down or something?.... super weird.

It was definately enough for a skeptic like me to be questioning things...

    30. @Little Lu
Oh wow! Those are some crazy experiences you've had! Scary indeed! :O It was incredible to read! I was always curious about whether ouija boards worked or not, and I've tried it a couple of times as a teen with no luck... Or maybe perhaps it was lucky after all, as I could have potentially had it much worse....

      @sleeplesskat
That's so strange and sent chills down my spine reading about your best friend's doll! Has she considered maybe rigging a camera in her room, by chance?

    31. I dont mind sharing at all.

I guess a little about myself would help understand some of the stories I have, so I'll go ahead and mention here that its not uncommon for premonitions and clairvoyance to be passed down in my family. My mother has always had premonitions, but never really anything crazy. It seems I have been the one to kinda pick up these "abilities". Which is both a blessing and a curse in itself.
To clarify, I went through a phase where I didn't believe in the paranormal at all. I chocked it up to an overly active imagination as a child. However, the paranormal never seems to escape me.

Some of my experiences have been really positive, dealing with passed family members. Others, not so... um.. positive.

The first major encounter I had was when my grandfather passed away. I was 13 at the time. We moved into the house he occupied on his death wish, and lived there for a few years. It was a really nice little house, and perfect for our family. I had my own room, my brothers who were younger shared a room. There were three of us, my mother, step father.
I am the oldest of the siblings and only daughter. However the oldest brother and myself always argued, as we were closer in age. Normal sibling stuff.

One day we were arguing in the hallway and I turned to look in my parents room, I saw my grandfather glaring at me. I felt disappointment, almost like he was not okay with the way we were acting. I quickly ran to my room and closed the door and stopped arguing, lol. In the same house, things would move on their own, be hidden and show up out of nowhere. Almost like someone was playing a game. I saw my grandfather about 3 times before when we were older, we moved out of the house. I like to believe he was there watching over us.

The second story I have to share is rather complicated.
This is the most... unnerving experience I have ever had. This is the immediate house we moved in after we moved away from our grandfathers house. As my brothers got older, we needed a bigger place. My parents at the time found a house on the market that was way under budget with a lot of beautiful space. Almost too good to be true, according to my mother. In which... to be honest, it was too good to be true.

We never asked about the history of the place, or it was never mentioned, I dont remember. As soon as we moved in, everyone was washed over with a feeling of sadness and depression. Even though we were all happy to be in a bigger and nicer house. The house even had a pool. At this time I was an older teen.
Anyways, I always felt vulnerable for some reason, or something was watching me. I shrugged it off as it just being a daunting new place, everyone kinda needs to learn a new house when they move in. How the house settles, etc.

There was so much that happened after the second week we were living there. I will begin to list, to shorten the post.
My figures would fly off the shelf on their own, one broke. There was no way they could of fell unless there were an earthquake, in which, there was none. Our cats started acting weird and meowing at nothing in the corner of my mothers bathroom. We thought that maybe a bug was there, but there was no cobwebs, no bugs, nothing. The cats would sit there hours meowing at that corner. My step father saw a mist. I heard voices, my mother heard voices. My grandmother (who does not believe in ghosts) saw a dark shadow figure watching her sleep when she visited in the guest room. She said that there was a demon in our house, and we should get it blessed. We heard knocking, and thought our neighbors were hitting our house somehow, we went and questioned them. We decided to just ignore it and move on, could of been pipes, idk. But it always happened in threes. My mother heard childrens feet in the hallways when everyone was asleep and the cats were in my room. I saw a shadow figure about 5 times in that house.

I could go on and on. I think its important to mention that after some research, we found out someone committed suicide in the garage. I saw/heard almost everything that happened, and we had to allow the house to go in foreclosure to escape it. We felt something evil was in the house, and to this day I think there really was something evil there. I couldnt pin point if it was a human or non-human spirit, but honestly I think there could of been both. This is just future speculation.

I have... tons more to share...
This is just tip of the iceberg, I just feel my post is really long.
I can share more in another post after this. These are just my teenage years before I turned down any paranormal belief. I had some experiences that made my skeptical self believe in the paranormal again, aha. Right now Im just happy I live in a house that has very positive energy, with nothing paranormal at all happening.

    32. You've had some pretty amazing experiences, both good and bad. It's a good thing that you and your family got out of tge house. I wonder just how far back the history of that house goes? I'm almost suspicious that maybe a force in the house could have driven that one person to suicide, perhaps? As you did mention you and your family felt depressed after moving there. Or may e you were all feeling the remnants of that person's energy.... Just trying to speculate. Anyway, I would love to hear more about your experiences here, too, if you don't mind sharing them. :)

    33. Wow, those are some pretty crazy experiences! I understand how it is to have way more to share, lol. Even the two spooky incidents I mentioned in my above post is just few of many. The others are right--I could really write a book. XD

I'm glad it seems you were not harmed in these experiences. I have only had two majorly difficult and potentially harmful experiences with ghosts, and one of them I'm pretty sure really was a demon or very dark entity of some kind. I'm very nontraditional and not really religious. I follow a philosophical belief system, but I still believe in some malignant spirits for sure.

My family on my mother's side is also very clairvoyant! It's very interesting how those kinds of traits can be passed down. My aunt for instance, and her kids, can all see spirits almost constantly. My cousins used to complain to me that they couldn't sleep because they always saw the same man standing over their bed staring at them at night. Very crazy.

    34. Update on my previous post...
So I mentioned to my friend that I shared her story here, and she mentioned that it happened again recently. This time the door was closed, and all people and pets were in a different room, and her fiance and her heard a noise, and went to check... and he (her doll) had moved again to the same spot he had been moving to previously.

After reading other people's posts, it sounds like this isn't entirely an unknown phenomenon. Creepy nevertheless...

    35. I don't really believe in the paranormal myself, despite being fascinated in it. That being said, I only have one BJD and sometimes I do wonder if she has a mind of her own, haha! I was trying to make a duct tape dress form the other day and she smacked me in the face, left a tiny handprint at the base of my nose. Clearly she didn't like it too much >.> That's fascinating that that's the reason dolls are hollow though, I always thought it was just so they were lighter for children. Interesting!

    36. I've always had a huge interest in "possessed" dolls :shudder. I go back and forth as to weather i believe in ghosts in the first place. I've been to psychics and such, allegedly my mother was one. If she was still around i would ask her for her opinion as well, but since she's passed, I'll say that I'm almost sure she would say yes.
Do I believe it? I don't know though.
However if you've got any paranormal stories about this I'd totally love to hear them! This is really one of those things that deeply interest me.

    37. I hope not, they would scare me and i wouldn't be abe to go near them ;_;

    38. Hey guys, something kind of freaky happened to me the other day, the first freaky-ish thing (but don't worry, because it is most likely just me overthinking things and making a big deal out of nothing! Ha ha ha....)!

I took my Iplehouse doll, Luna (the one in my profile picture), out of her box the other day to take pictures of her body to have as reference for body-blushing ideas. I usually keep her in a box and store her in my closet to make sure she's won't get damaged, and to extend the life of the resin, because I've read up on so many articles that state to keep them dry and in a dark place otherwise the skin would turn yellow really fast.

Anyways, I was sitting on my bed, getting her out of her box to take pictures, and I lay her down and noticed her head was angled towards me quite eerily, and it appeared as if she were looking straight at me. She had no eyes in, so they were deep, dark holes that seemed to just stare right into me, so I tilted her head to the opposite direction because I have a natural fear of dolls (as much as I love them and their beauty). I am an easily jumpy person and I didn't really feel comfortable anyhow, so I thought it would be best if she weren't looking at me. I then went on my phone to overlook the photos I took.
      When I looked up again..
her head was tilted back, in the same position she was in before I moved her, facing me...looking at me right in my eyes. And this was just barely a couple inches away from me.

I...was extremely freaked out, and I know her head must have turned like that from me moving around a lot subconsciously around on the bed while on my phone, and the bed must've shifted the head to where all the weight on the bed was. Also, not to mention, her head was loose from the body because the other day, I detached the head from her neck (so I could take her eyes out) and had it loosely sit on her neck. I was too lazy to pull the S-hook from the neck and attach it to the head.

I know theres many logical explanations as to how her head re-shifted back towards me...but still...even if it was nothing, I felt extremely creeped out. That night, I probably put her away faster than I ever have.

But yeah my small story is NOTHING compared to all these horrific ones that are being told in this thread! Extremely scary experiences, I'm glad you all are safe though.

    39. I have to say I never knew dolls were empty for possession. I mean, I studied ars history, I know that some "humanoid" vases and pots were used to magical/religious rituals, and then the doll kids were just made out of woods or rope. But I do believe in a certain time in history (specialy XVIII-XIX century, with magical cabinets and so on), some groups of people used dolls as an empty vase on rituals.
I love all your stories (I don't have any related with a doll), and even if I'm not a religious or mystical person I don't find myself denying it either... I believe in energy: energy moves the things, positive and negative. When somebody is negative you can tell, if somebody is happy it can be contagious. Some people gives us good vibes, others don't. Some "haunted" places may be scaring and we can feel relief in some places... So it kinda makes sense the "egregore" thing.
I mean, some people in the dolly community gives their dollies the status of a real human. They name them, talk to them, dress them, give them many cares, and not just "material" stuff; they cry with them, feel in company with them, make them part of the greatest and saddest moments in the life... I believe this energy can go from the person to the doll, that eventually can get a real status that can be felt by other people. If it would make her move or try to communicate with others, I don't know!

    40. I hope no one minds bringing this thread back to the surface as this is rather interesting topic. I had something strange occur in the month of March of this year. I don't think it's paranormal, but I'm not sure. About three years ago, I purchased my second bjd as pictured in my avatar. Since then, I got two additional bjds, but this bjd has always been my favorite and closest to my heart. Unlike the first bjd and the other two, the bonding with this one is strong-so much so that he'd always be by my side and I'd hide him if a stranger walked into my room, I'd confine in him whenever I'm feeling distressed and I'd absolutely not allow a single soul to touch him. Only I handled him. So, I recently moved in with an awesome roommate who is aware of my doll collection (I collect other dolls aside from bjds as well) and this special bjd. She didn't have a problem with it. Well, one night, I was sitting on the couch with him in my arms facing my roommate who was sitting in the lazy boy adjacent to me. I was trying to get him warmed up to her since she was open from the start. It happened in a matter of a second. My roommate suddenly got in his face in a playful matter and that's when things got strange super quick. I couldn't even react in time. Just as soon as she got in his face, she jolted backwards in disbelief and told me "I shouldn't have done that, it felt as if someone put their fingers at the center of my forehead and pushed me away." Now, my roommate is not a deranged person and the look of shock and fear was imminent on her face. Despite me being in shock, I was sincerely scared for her. She didn't seem the same the rest of that even. After a few days after the incident, she theorized that it could have been my energy interacting and protecting the precious bjd. It's not something I thought about, but someone on this thread mentioned about thoughtforms and I'm wondering if that could have had anything to do with it.

    41. The concept of egregores is so fascinating to me! It's nice to have a name for what my stuffed tiger I've had since I was two and a half is. I've put so much love into him for so long (my entire living memory) that it's no surprise he feels "alive" to me!

As for bjds, I did have a haunted body I got second hand. It seemed angry somehow, so I ended up getting rid of it.

    42. When I look at my own dolls, no, I don't think they can be possessed by spirits. They seem like perfectly nice little resins.

On the other hand, my back yard used to feel weirdly occupied until I had a nice long talk with it about how the space belonged to me one night during a bout of sleep paralysis. (thinking you've seen spirits is oddly common with sleep paralysis)

Turns out this part of my block housed the city's last functioning, purposefully built, public brothel. It operated between 1875 the 1910s. It was located across from the cities Laurel Hill Cemetery, which was first used in the 1850s. Of course, it was dug up to make room for housing, and the graves moved between 1937 and 1948 to a new location down the peninsula, Colma. So who knows what happened in my yard, near the brothel and and the graveyard, or if any bodies were left behind during the relocation? Who knows if my experience was real or imagined?

      haha~

    43. While I do find some dolls to be creepy looking, I don't believe in the paranormal. So, to answer your question, nope.

    44. These stories are pretty fascinating, but I don't really believe in ghosts and spirits. I do, however, believe firmly in demons (and angels) and I do believe demons are fully capable of possession and opression.

I don't know if a doll can be "possessed" or simply used as a conduit to interact with the physical world (as with the infamous Annabelle). But all those "haunted" dolls out there, I don't believe any of them are good or friendly. Far more likely that it's a demon masquerading as a "friendly spirit" and its intentions are NEVER good or innocent.

If I ever ended up with a doll that seemed as if it was possessed, I'd definitely get rid of it. Even if it was one of my favorites. I just wouldn't take chances messing with things like that. Seems I'd be asking for a whole boatload of problems to keep a haunted doll around.

    45. It would take a lot to convince me that a doll is possessed/haunted or has a spirit in it. I'm interested in the idea and some concepts are really fun, but I find it difficult to actually believe it. My wishful thinking is that creating a character actually makes them real in some other realm. But I'd rather they not be trapped inside an inanimate object. It sounds tragic for the doll and uncomfortable for the owner.

    46. Do you think your dolls can be possessed by spirits? What are your opinions on this topic? Do you believe it?
Personally, I do not believe my dolls can be possessed by spirits. I like to sometimes imagine they are enjoying getting attention or new clothes, or spending time with their friends here, but that's just me thinking about the personalities I have given them.

Are you sometimes scared/creeped out by your doll? Do you like the idea and embrace it?
Nope, I have never been creeped out by my own dolls. They don't frighten me at all. I can't even imagine that, because I am so familiar with them. However, I am not at all surprised when my friends or family members are, because a lot of people are creeped out by dolls.

I have sometimes seen other types of dolls that I don't like, but I wouldn't say they literally scare me. I just don't like them. Would I find other people's dolls creepy? Maybe, but I don't know if I would think they're possessed.

    47. I had a friend as a child who convinced us all that her toys' eyes lit up and they flew around the room at night. But more seriously, I like your thought about which part the soul resides in! It gets too philosophical/metaphysical for me, maybe. Is there a mind (the head) or a more religiously-based placing (the body). I would intuitively say the head. But either way, I suppose possession doesn't require a soul necessarily, does it? Just a vessel?

    48. The simple answer? No.

I'm never creeped out by my dolls and I don't think they can be possessed by spirits of any kind.

    49. Human spirits, Demons and other living entities can decide to "haunt" OR "possess" inanimate objects including dolls. They like dolls because dolls resemble humans. I have several dolls that are haunted by human spirits and a few that are possessed by Demons including a 3 ft artist doll whose eyes have changed colour as well as changed facial expression and watched a misty apparition dissappear into the doll. These are just a tiny bit of my paranormal doll experiences. Other family members and friends have had some very unusual experiences with my dolls aswell.

Unfortunately none of my bjds have done anything cool like that but I could always have some who conjures Demons bind some to my bjds.

    50. I love this thread. I've always been extremely fascinated by the paranormal and supernatural, adding dolls to the mix as well as everyone's varying opinions is fantastic. I really enjoyed reading everyone's experiences, I hope everyone's safe.
To answer the question, I absolutely and whole-heartedly believe that dolls can be possessed. I think that anything can be possessed honestly, dolls seem like they'd be preferable for possession. With all that being said, I don't believe anything is inhabiting or will inhabit my doll or any future dolls simply because I'm not letting that happen. I think that, to some degree, you have power over what enters you and your possessions. Of course there are exceptions but I believe that if you're very careful about what you think, say, wish for, and what energy you put into it, you can control what does and doesn't enter. Think of it like a window, If you have a glass window or an open window, it's easy to enter. If you have a closed window with iron bars, it's way harder to enter. Things can still get through sometimes but for the most part you can keep things out. This is just my opinion of course and it's just what I believe but it certainly is reassuring to know I can stop something or at least make it harder to enter.

If my doll was possessed and if I knew that he was possessed, I'd seek out professional help. Stuff like expelling, purifying, or exorcising the spirit. I'd then use various cleansing rituals and items and burn sage.
To be entirely honest though, I don't think I'd actually notice. Ironically, I'm someone who is completely fascinated by this while simultaneously being the most oblivious person to it on the planet. I'd probably just write it off as something else or my cat and never actually know.
I apologize as I don't have any interesting stories to share, If something weird has happened to me or will happen I probably won't notice it :sweat

My doll has never creeped me out. There's the normal stuff like when I'm anxious or sad or something I'll pose my doll and focus on him instead of my self. Normally he's a pretty good poser but for some reason he'll just crumple awkwardly, I actually find it really funny and it cheers me up so quickly. Other times I'll look at him and his expression will have a lot of variety even though he's a smiling sculpt, it's kinda weird.

    51. I think dolls can become possessed from a spirit, my house has activity and I definitely have captured pictures of ghosts with my smart phone and digital camera ( Droid Turbo in total darkness facing a mirror). Believe me, you might want to re-think about having your beloved dolls being taken over by something you can't handle. I have sold several BJD's that gave me nightmares and once I told hubby we cleansed them with Holy Water and prayers before packing them up for the new owner. My Narae (Tisa) will be in my dreams from time to time warning me what is about to happen. I have a male BJD that was in my dream and literally looked at me and smiled not a creepy smile, but a loving smile. When I had vampire doll years ago, in my dreams twice she kept biting me in my lower back and would suck the blood out. Hubby liked her, but after those 2 dreams back to back she had to go. Of course I did not know that at the time I had a huge fibroid in my uterus that was making me weak when my monthly would come around. Hubby said she was warning me that something was wrong with my body and that was the only way she was telling me. Coincidence? Maybe, but who knows. I love my BJD's and I talk to them, give them a hug, all that bonding. My own opinion.......yeah they can be possessed, maybe to protect the owner.

    52. While I do love a good scare every once in a while, I normally take the supernatural with a grain of salt. I've had an experience or two that could be best described as unexplained, but I don't think of myself as a magnet for them. My dolls are thankfully free of any malign stuff, as far as I can see (pets don't get freaked out by them? Good!).

Nonetheless, I did have a reassuring dream featuring one of them (his character, rather, fleshed out as a human that is totally recognizable as his doll form -- and he was totally aware that he was my doll). I doubt my dreams are prophetic, though. I am prone to having vivid and psychedelic dreams more often than not, but it wasn't a scary feeling. If anything, it shows I'm subconsciously bonding with my doll on a different level. XD

    53. Yes I believe they can be inhabited but not by the ghosts of dead people

I believe they can be inhabited by entities or sprites but not like the movies where the things start moving and attacking people

I think the only project an emotion like you feel sad for no reason but you feel a presence of a living person like when you are watching the television and you know someone pass behind you without the need to look because you have felt the presence

In my culture if you give love to an object and treat it like a real person and put your energy and emotion in it it becomes inviting for the entities to live in it because they feed off it

The vessel is enticing because it is close to a human shape and ball jointed dolls have a lot of details

With this reasoning I also wonder if the realistic love dolls like you see in television also get haunted because a lot of emotion and love is project on the doll and then I laugh thinking of the entity stuck in that life haha :gingerbreadman:gingerbreadman

    54. I believe in it, and I don't think it's always a bad thing.

I'm unsure about the spirits of people in the sense of an entire consciousness (though I don't think this is impossible, just not something I have experience of), but I think to some extent, the owner of the doll can imbue it with their energy depending on how they treat it. I think this is true of anything a person has responsibility for - treating your possessions with care and respect energises them positively, and negatively for the reverse.

That's not to say that any pre-owned dolls who are neglected are automatically going to be "cursed", and if they're adopted by a new owner who takes better care of them their energy can change. It kinda depends on a lot of factors. Many people don't experience anything like this with their dolls. But I do think this is part of the reason why you should always treat them with as much care and respect as possible.

    55. I usually don't believe in Spirits or possessed toys, but I was at a thrift store trying to buy a porcelain doll, so I could steal her stand and maybe clothes. For some reason I felt very uncomfortable and scared. And I'm never scared of dolls. I just knew I did not want her in my house. She felt dangerous?

    56. There are so many passionate people here... Who's to say such feelings of passion couldn't be passed onto a beloved object?
Remember when you a kid and you had that one special toy? Mine's name is Max and he's a stuffed Beagle I've had since I was four. Even after I outgrew him, I always felt like he was watching over me and he would frequently appear in my dreams to protect me.
I'm still new to the world of BJD... But I hope that I can develop that kind of a relationship with my future doll :) But more of a friend and less of a guardian ;)

    57. I do believe that dolls (and any other object, really) can be possessed by a spirit or entity, but that it's much more common for them to develop a spirit that is entirely their own through love and use. You could compare it to the concept of animism that is present in several cultures/religions such as Shintoism.

Neither of my BJDs has really developed much of a spirit yet, but my most beloved country rabbit doll has her own feelings, personality, and memory. My grandmother sewed her for me for Christmas when I was eight, and that was nearly thirty years ago. She's been with me through a dozen moves, deaths of family members, upheavals and happy occurrences. When I sent her away to a doll hospital a few months ago to be recovered (she was falling apart), I had an unpleasant background anxiety the whole time - she was gone six weeks!!

When she arrived back home in the mail, I threw a party at a nearby cafe and invited all of my friends to bring their stuffed animals. I was afraid that when she arrived I wouldn't recognize her, but even though she looks a little different now I can still feel her spirit as strong as ever. Other dolls of mine that have spirits are the Little Orphan Annie that my mother sewed for me and a Lil' Drowsy Beans from when I was a small child.

    58. Maybe. Someone gave me a porcelain doll because they thought it was haunted and it looked just like me! I talk nice to her and haven't had any problems. I do believe there is somthing else out there. Have a picture somewhere of a doll in my vanity mirror. I took a picture of my room with a new camera. Problem was I didn't have an old fashion doll and their wasn't one on the vanity where it should be to reflect like that, just in the mirror....

    59. I've experienced evil spirits in real life. Not fun. I don't think they can possess inanimate objects.
However . . .If any of my dolls were to be "occupied" by a spirit, it would be the doll I've had on layaway, who is going to be Reno from FFVII. The character was designed after the fox spirit from Japanese folk lore. The Trickster. I would not be surprised if a fox spirit occupied my doll. Freaked out, yes/surprised, no.
