Disturbing BJD scenarios

Jan 17, 2017

    1. Of course, we all love our dolls to bits. They're beautiful; they're perfect. But working on them tends to be a little bit... disturbing. A body is missing its head, the eye sockets are empty, and where did that hand go? Usually these things only happen in horror movies.

What do you think is most disturbing about BJDs? Do share because we all love a good scare. Of course, pictures are most welcome. :)

    2. My friend used to be pretty afraid of the dolls. Until I got my first MSd size-- she loved that size. However, before I only had my Delf Yder. We took a trip to Otakon as to which Ren of course went with. I had to tell her to look away when changing his eyes for his Zack Fair cosplay because it freaked her out. I think the most terrifying situation for her was when the eye didn't stay stuck, so he kinda had one eye mostly white since the eye slouched down. xD Not a pretty sight to wake up to.

    3. I took one of mine to otakon too, and the people I went with weren't as comfy with him as I was. ;u;

One of the weirdest things is when I body blush or restring him, I take him all apart. Body parts everywhere.

    4. I had a doll without eyes for a while, and while I didn't find it scary my mother did. Mainly when I stuck the dolls fingers in her eye socket when I was taking about getter her new eyes, it totally freaked her out! xD I actually found it sort of cute? but then I like cute zombie characters and other such mixtures of cute with gory so I guess it's not to surprising...

    5. Aside from their price, the only thing about bjds that looks disturbing to me is body blushing, especially on paper white skin. Red on white looks like blood to me.

    6. I personally don't like to have them without eyes if they are assembled. I don't mind working on their faceup and having the empty eye-sockets on a body-less head, but if there's an assembled, clothed doll sitting on my shelf without eyes I get a bit uncomfortable. A friend of mine got terrified at the sight of all the body parts while I was restringing one of them, she was just saying how cute my dolls are and then saw all the pieces aligned on the table to be strung and immediately left the room saying "I didn't need to see that!"

    7. That's so funny! My husband is okay with my dolls, says they're "less creepy", when fully assembled. But when I pull the head off..... xD

    8. I can't say I've ever been bothered by eyeless, headless or disassembled dolls myself... But seeing one of the crew eyeless for the first time did make my husband do a double-take. Until he came across me switching eyes on someone that first time, he had no idea that their eyes could be taken out. He was "Okay. Yeah. That's creepy."

    9. I was putting in the eyes for my little sisters doll for her as her doll is only 12cm so pretty small eyes, I was moving them around to get them in place and my other sister freaked out, I was a little mean and started making the eyes follow her around :XD: she hasn't seen them headless yet, but she was pretty freaked with just the moving eyes.

    10. Its when im making wig caps- exactly like on first photo!!!! I had two dolls like that on my table and it was....yes...disturbing:pout:

    11. Im not a big fan of blank heads... I've got 2 at the mo and had a blank boy who was painted back in... June?? but yeh, the whole totally blank face thing is a little weird, like if a person had no definition to their face at all its a bit strange XD

    12. Hmm, I guess sometimes when a doll is blushed very dark red on joints and in certain patterns on the face, it looks like a rash associated with certain diseases and disorders to me. :sweat I guess it's supposed to be cute, though.

I find when the pieces are all apart and spread out for cleaning, sanding, etc. other people aware quite disturbed.

    13. I see the dolls as resin, not human, so seeing them in pieces is no more disturbing to me than seeing any other toys or models in pieces. Most people close to me know my hobby enough that they don't really care either.

I think the most disturbing thing is more in stuff I say. "I mailed that head today." "There's a body in the box in the closet." "I sold my girl's body, I really needed money." "I have a box of eyes in the cabinet." "I told her it's fine to send me the body in pieces." "I plan to remove his face tomorrow." "I'm going to take an exacto knife to his eyelids."

Sometimes I'll be discussing doll stuff in public areas with a friend who is aware of my hobby and I forget that strangers who overhear will probably assume serial killer before doll owner. XD

    14. It really disturbed my family when I slingshotted some dolly junk across our yard for a MtF mod (I kind of catapulted it because I was angling the Dremel away from my body and hands for safety).

It was realistically-sculpted enough that when my dad found it later he was a bit uncomfortable.

I really thought I had picked up all the pieces!

    15. (I just copied and pasted this from my thread: /threads/do-you-think-your-dolls-can-be-possessed-by-spirits.734387/ , but I find that it's also relevant to this thread so I thought I would share)

I took my Iplehouse doll, Luna (the one in my profile picture), out of her box the other day to take pictures of her body to have as reference for body-blushing ideas. I usually keep her in a box and store her in my closet to make sure she's won't get damaged, and to extend the life of the resin, because I've read up on so many articles that state to keep them dry and in a dark place otherwise the skin would turn yellow really fast.

Anyways, I was sitting on my bed, getting her out of her box to take pictures, and I lay her down and noticed her head was angled towards me quite eerily, and it appeared as if she were looking straight at me. She had no eyes in, so they were deep, dark holes that seemed to just stare right into me, so I tilted her head to the opposite direction because I have a natural fear of dolls (as much as I love them and their beauty). I am an easily jumpy person and I didn't really feel comfortable anyhow, so I thought it would be best if she weren't looking at me. I then went on my phone to overlook the photos I took.
      When I looked up again..
her head was tilted back, in the same position she was in before I moved her, facing me...looking at me right in my eyes. And this was just barely a couple inches away from me.

I...was extremely freaked out, and I know her head must have turned like that from me moving around a lot subconsciously around on the bed while on my phone, and the bed must've shifted the head to where all the weight on the bed was. Also, not to mention, her head was loose from the body because the other day, I detached the head from her neck (so I could take her eyes out) and had it loosely sit on her neck. I was too lazy to pull the S-hook from the neck and attach it to the head.

I know theres many logical explanations as to how her head re-shifted back towards me...but still...even if it was nothing, I felt extremely creeped out. That night, I probably put her away faster than I ever have.

    16. Reading these things or overhearing them must be so creepy for people who don't know what we are talking about. I never thought of that, but it's really funny thinking about it!

At least it was your dad who picked it up, rather than some guests over for a barbecue who have no idea about your dolls :XD:

    17. @Shabi_Akireisa

You're probably right. He'd just manage to avoid seeing me with some of my frankendolly hybrids that I'd made before getting BJDs.

I think the violence of the modding process sort of disturbs people.

    18. I find them slightly unsettling when they're headless. Either a body, bonus if naked, just lying there, or a head. I don't know if a head with eyes or without is worse, actually. Lol.

    19. The only thing that disturbs me are really poorly done mods and Doll Chateau lol.

    20. I can see how most faceups and costumes are meant to be themed in a certain way but I get unnerved by excessive scars on dolls, one eye missing from a doll, and very red or splotchy body blushing.

    21. Some people that see dolls are definitely creeped out by them already, but it is always funny to see the expression of people that do not collect ball jointed dolls when they see a bald doll missing their headcap.

    22. for me personally, the only thing that makes me "nope" away from pictures or whatever is when people decide to pose their dolls in ahem overly adult positions. I like a bit of tasteful nudity and a bit of sweet tasteful sappy romaticness but when you've decided to pose your dolls into certain very adult positons or something I get really squicked.
I think because I STILL can't help but think of dolls as toys or something, I dunno, it just makes me super uncomfortable.
Maybe i'm just a prude lol.

but i'm used to doll parts all over the place, eyes, eyeless heads, decapitated dolls. Husband remarked that he's so used to finding decapitated heads around he doesn't even register them now lol.

the other night i'm sure the neighbours were wondering what I was up to though. I kept bringing a doll onto the front porch with a bag over his head to spray his hands (I was doing tattoos and the bag was to protect his face while I sprayed) But it must have looked pretty weird, this large doll with a sack on his head crouched in a praying position while I sprayed him with something lol.

    24. The only thing that remotely comes to mind as disturbing regarding bjds is a certain thought that crossed my mind when digging through the stack of boxes to get out a particular doll: "this reminds me of an excavation at an ancient Egyptian burial chamber." I'm a big ancient Egyptian buff, but likening my dolls to mummies in tombs is kind of weird to me:sweat

    25. I have a box of spare doll parts... assorted hands, feet, blank event heads. And there's a shelf where I line up all my spare DD option busts (I have one of each size on standby for sewing commissions). Definitely looks a bit creepy, lol.

Or, seeing an amateur take a dremel to a rare LE for their first attempt EVER at an extensive mod. Then seeing the horrifically mangled result painted with sharpies and nail polish.

    26. When I first got into the hobby, I found the fact that most of the dolls had actual genitalia disturbing. Kind of hilarious, but disturbing.

Now, ten years later, I find the LACK of genitalia on a doll more disturbing. Like, poor Barbie doesn't have nipples! Poor Ken isn't a man at all! At least give the poor guy the illusion of having something to fill out his molded-on undies! :mwahaha

    27. I didn't think it was disturbing but people who came around to my house seemed to think it was weird to have a bowl of eyeballs lying around for decoration. In my defense, it was a pretty bowl with some very pretty eyes...

    28. When I got my first BJD last year, I was SO excited and unboxed her in front of my mum. She was curious again about the hobby now that I had actually gotten a doll, so she was trying to understand my perspective and why I liked them so much.
At one point I said, "look!" and took off the magnetic headcap on my new doll (to show her that's where you put eyes in, etc.) and she was so freaked out! She said something about how it was like opening their skull and something about brains, and I just laughed.

    29. I made mine armour, but because of the type of armour I'm making I didn't want to take him apart so I completely wrapped his body in clingfilm and done the paper mache on him (yes, I probably shouldn't have done maybe? But there was nothing wrong with him after I took it all off haha) but here was some of the process that looked like a human sacrifice!

    30. Crooked eyes! I spent forever trying to adjust my DD's eyes to ensure she didn't have a lazy eye or something, because eyes are so important in terms of how lively a doll looks to me. Otherwise...it's weird. Funny enough, I'm not bothered by eyeless heads.

I'm also a little disturbed by the thought of sanding off doll nipples, despite that fact that there are a few bodies I'd do it to myself. >_o Makes my chest hurt.

    31. My parents hate them when they come in blank.

    32. I think putting clothes on them can sometimes be...violent haha. You flip them upside down, take off their hands/feet, even heads sometimes! I was putting a new outfit on my girl today and her foot came off when I was taking off her shoes! That can be a little disturbing if you're not used to dollies!

    33. I second this comment. Other than this, nothing really disturbs me when working on a doll, whether it be missing eyes, decapitated heads, and so on.

    34. seeing dolls doing something that looks creepy without context like a fight scene looking like a lobotomy out of context

    35. I think honestly dolls aren't that creepy. I used to be terrified of them and now I want my own! I agree with the sanding off nipples thing, ouch!

      This ^

So, when making wig caps, I end up with cloth wrapped heads. Dangling upside down. From a sword (it seemed like a good thing to use to suspend the head between to chairs to dry).

      Heads.
      Dangling.
      In the dark.

(Okay, I'm not disturbed. I think it's funny. But I see how others, like my poor brother, find it disturbing!)

    37. I told someone I know that the dolls are anatomically correct and her reaction was, 'can I see?!' Poor Thranduil, no dignity left at all.

    38. Maybe it's because I had a parent in medicine, but as a kid a big part of why I hated Barbie and Ken was the lack of detail in them (and those permabriefs). It just bothered me too much to want to play with them.

For me, unpolished/poorly done mods are more distressing than disturbing... But the thousand-yard-stare that comes from pointing the eyes straight forward really bothers me.

And as for the truly disturbing... I had a second-hand doll in NS that I was planning to make tan, but with Rit getting progressively worse reviews (before disperse dyes started being recommended) I decided to go with paint instead. Well, what I thought would have been a nice warm tan turned out to be fire engine red on the doll! I left her for a while, then decided to try disperse dye, so she had to be cleaned.

All the doll parts laying on my desk after the first pass of W&N failed to remove all the paint, but let it flow and pool a bit, looked like a scene out of a slasher movie...

    39. I actually cant stand to see my dolls naked. Especially my girl Corrin. Maybe because the anatomy freaks me out or just because the thought of it makes me uncomfortable

    40. There is nothing that really creeps me out about bjds. Yes there are some I find ugly/unappealing but it still does not creep me out. I have no problem with gore mods or dolls in pieces as they are just resin and paint. Likewise I also have no problem with them representing demons, gods etc...I think it varies from person to person though. People have fears and things they associate as frightening and so that particular thing associated with the doll will freak them out. Also there is a legitimate condition called pediophobia which is a fear of dolls.

    41. I know people find dolls disturbing. (My little brother is deathly afraid of them. It's probably my fault.) But the quirks about doll body parts all over the place I know can be strange and messed up to most people. Thankfully it isn't abnormal around here since my husband and I have been in the wargame miniatures hobby for a while, so there has always been random plastic and metal body parts around the home.

I think if I step back from an outsider perspective our most disturbing conversations regarding painting miniatures or thinking of a faceup idea has been when I ask my husband in a craft paint section "Do these colours look right for a dead body?" and my husband replies "How many days dead? And what were the conditions of their death?" People tend to walk by us a lot faster when we throw out discussions like that.

Actually, keeping my floating heads in bubble wrap in boxes seems a lot like murder discoveries... I need to really make soft pillows for them instead. LOL.I think that is making me uneasy whenever I have to re-wrap them for protective measures. Especially when I find myself apologizing to the heads.

    42. I don't think anything creeps me out about BJDs. Actually a "creepiest BJD" photo thread would be pretty funny...anybody want to start one?
