Yeah I’m so worried namjoon by esthy will drop at the same time as Author0509’s dolls. And the fact that author won’t sell only the heads...
this hobby is killing my wallet

 

I just read somewhere Esthy won't be selling any dolls any time in the near future nor does she have any plans to ;n;

I am so disappointed. I wanted a SD Namjoon so badly. (also on the note of author, just got a message that they're ONLY selling full dolls.)

This makes me sad. Especially with Namjoon as my BTS bias. To see what looked like RM's head next to the Jaeii sculpt on the DM website made me so happy. I literally check the Nobility website every morning when I get up for work to see if anything is there. I feel badly for the sculptor Esthy. Too much pressure. The photo she recently posted with Hwayoung in a new hairstyle was nice to see.

 

@xkelpiex Auhtor stated that she won't sell the heads separately and all of the dolls will be released at the same time :< And the price, 380-400$ per doll, is fairly "cheap" but at the same time very expensive if you plan on getting more than just one. I was planning on getting 2 if she would sell the heads separately, but now... I need to decide between Suga and RM.

And if these news about Esthy not releasing the RM head are true... It saddens me D: Also it makes it even harder to decide whether I should get Rm from Author instead.

 

So many decisions! I wanted RM so badly from Esthy. This is the first kpop band where I've had more than one bias. Namjoon, Suga and Jimin.
I'm grateful I have the DM sculpts I have (it took me two years of searching for Sunho before I found him).
I was so excited that I would finally be able to get one of her sculpts directly from the artist during her release, especially Namjoon.

TT @Smol_Chim off topic but what size will author0509's bjd's be called? Tiny? MSD? I only have 1/3 SD heads and don't know anything about other sizes!

 

Does author0509 have a discussion thread? I've tried searching but I'm not coming up with one. I feel like we should probably move that artists discussion to their own thread.

I think I should’ve asked the moderators as well. I did begin a thread. They’ll remove it if not allowed. Still a big learning curve for me. As for Esthy, I haven’t found anything on social media except an IG account that is for fans of Distant Memory.

 

Sadly I've never stumbled upon a social media account for Esthy. Just a fan account on IG whom keeps using her pictures and I wish they would stop since the photos are not theirs to share.

I believe anyone is allowed to make a thread as long as the doll is on topic, I'm happy to make one if one doesn't exist.

Hello @MacaronTea Thank you! I did check the thread and it was not available. As a newbie I'm still navigating the waters of DoA. The dolls / artist have to be approved before any discussion links can begin which makes perfect sense. A kind Moderator told me to ask the Mods to assess the artist/ dolls for future topic. As for Esthy-I nearly had a heart attack this morning when both her site and Nobility Doll site were both down due to overload of traffic. I thought there might have been a new release! Sadly no. I checked at my lunch break and both sites were back up with no new information. Whew!

Thanks @Tuulen That's exactly why my thread was taken down. The doll maker hasn't been assessed for topicality which makes sense as to why there was no thread yet.

I still can't have access to the Nobility dolls site :'D
I get a notice that says that there are too many people on the site at the same time and servers are full. I think people have just found about Esthys work, after the Mattel dolls were released yesterday and people are making comparing pictures of Esthys dolls next to the Mattel ones. So they have attracted lot of attention now.

 

I think you’re correct about the clogging of both Nobility & Esthy’s sites. I checked out the other dolls & could pick Namjoon, Jimin & Hobi out immediately! The others not so much. Poor TaeTae TT

Also an update! My sunho’s body won’t be here for a while. I guess balljointeddivas is also waiting on dollzone orders from last AUGUST. It’s discouraging because I’ve seen that same body in the right skin tone on the second hand market twice already.
I might just buy the next one I see second hand and sell the one I get in like 5 or 6 months.

I wouldn't recommend you to buy a used body and sell the new one you'll be getting later. I don't think it would sell for the same price you paid >< Waiting is hard yes, but it's better to own a new body rather than a used one, imo.

I've been eyeing the smaller BTS dolls, I think MSD? from instagram but their ears bother me so much, the faces are nearly identical to the real boys but I don't understand why she made the ears so big...I wanted Yoongi and Jungkook but ironically, they are the ones who have the biggest ears lmao

I compared the dolls with the real life guys and they don't have such big ears. I can't fathom how she made exact faces except exact ears. When I see their heads all I see is BIG EARS AAAAAHHHHHH

yeah, the ears bother me so much, they're so big that the wig will not hide them ;(

 

@Smol_Chim The waiting game is so hard D: But it'll be worth it, trust me! It's better to own a new one, one reason being that if it does have something wrong with it, the company will compensate you but there are hobbyists who are not willing to do it.

Oh no, I just saw that author won't sell her dolls anymore because Bighit contacted her prohibiting her to sell the dolls due to copyright. Many people tagged Bighit's official instagram account to her dolls when the mattel dolls came out, I bet that's how Bighit found them. These people ruined it for us, it's ok if you didn't like mattel dolls but don't go bragging around to Bighit, they take SERIOUSLY all BTS related stuff and now for all the ones who complained about mattel while tagging both mattel and Bighit in author's account, we can only buy mattel now! (((

@Arletstar I woke up to this sad news as well. I feel so sorry for Author-so much work. She kept asking NOT to be tagged. Now I fear for Distant Memory as well. These are ART. Not to be confused with mass produced vinyl.

 

I feel bad now for complaining about the ears....I was planning on buying one doll for 7 months to get the whole group and I planned on sanding down the ears myself but other than ears, the rest was perfect, the faces, the body....it was so perfect, she was even going to sell wigs, eyes and even the face up service in the future...now it's gone.

I kind of want to write to Bighit because how come fansites can sell their photos and BTS fanamde products with no problem at all but these doll artists can't sell their dolls? I think this has to do about mattel, that's why I blame all those complainers. Mattel has a contract with BH to sell their dolls so BH sees these dolls in that way and not like the fanmade products from fansites. I feel so sad...I pray Bighit never finds out about Distant memory because if they do, not only the artist will be in trouble but also all the people who own distant memory dolls.

I want the Namjoon head so badly. But I think that she might not have the problem with her work since she doesn't state anywhere the original names of the idols.
This just makes me wonder, how come there be other heads based on other celebrities available with no problems...

 

I was reading (I'm no army) Bighit owns BTS and ARMY, they have traded marked those names. Other celebrities don't trade mark their own names and see no wrong with these items but BH doesn't want anyone to gain profit with BTS name unless BH themselves gain something out of it .Which is why they have a partnership with mattel, a well known and famous company around the world. They don't care if the dolls are well made or not, they already won with mattel. Bighit doesn't gain anything from individual unknown artists, they could care less if the product is better, it gives them no profit and exposure. That's why no one can gain profit with BTS name unless BH gains something . line friends can use BTS name under BT21, same with Mattel etc the line friends store is the most famous store in korea, mattel is the most famous doll company around the world. What do BJD artists bring to the table for BH? nothing so they become a target under "copyright" excuses .

 

I followed the whole twitter Mattel release story too.
When I saw the Mattel dolls I thought: wow they look really cute, just how I imagined, even better!
Then I read the comments...

I didn't know if I should laugh or cry... I mean how can you be that ridiculous to compare an artist bjd worth about 900 dollars with a barbie doll worth 20 bucks? It's mass production and the style is totally different.
I found it quite unfair. I think Mattel did a good job.

Reading that author0509s dolls were forbidden by Bighit... is just a logical conclusion. I mean this artist has so many followers and likes... it would have been a huge business. Instead of forbidding the sale it would have made more sense for big hit to make a deal with the artist and sell different types of dolls: artist dolls sell well enough. I wonder why they didn't do it.
I bet they also have an eye on distant memory, Esthy is just safe because she doesn't sell anything at the moment.
But I'm almost sure she got the similar mail.

I never intended to buy authors dolls, they're just not my style... but if they forbid Esthy dolls I'd really cry.

btw. I'd appreciate your advice on a little question:

I have Jaeii (arriving soon), but I'm not sure about the size of the eyes.
His info says 14mm, so I bought some, but they all have a pretty big iris... I want a more natural look.
I don't want the iris too be covered so much, it should just slightly touch the inside of the eye.

This is what it looks like right now (it's not Jaeii, it's Kang Jun from Mokona, but I guess they have similar eye gaps)

...so what eyes do you have for your Jaeii/DM dolls? what iris size would you recommend?

 

@DeanDynamite I use both 14mm and 12mm eyes with small iris. I usually make my eyes because I can't find the color that I like in those sizes..(thats the cons about small iris eyes).
I personally prefer 12mm with small iris because it looks more realistic.

I'd personally recommend 14mm small iris. I find 12mm very small.

You can order SOULinaBOX's eyes in 12 or 14mm small iris.
Some of the Enchanted Doll eyes come in "narrow" iris size.
Or Beetles Glass Eyes have some too. ^__^

I don't usually post in this thread (hehe, my E-yeon is off the BTS trend, though I enjoy following along and seeing everyone's dolls ), but I do sincerely hope that Esthy continues to make dolls in the future. I love her sculpting style so much, it would be really sad to loose!

I Think Mako eyes has generally smaller iris than some companies :O Not sure though!

 

@Smol_Chim There are two makers I've found on the etsy site. Chocolate Handmade -love the 12mm regular iris eyes I got for Sunho. I just ordered two more sets over three weeks ago and realized they hadn't arrived. Went to check their status and noticed the shop has stopped accepting orders at this time until they complete and ship the orders they already have. Acrylic but I really like them.
The other I just ordered from is also on etsy: SOULinaBOXdolls they will create custom orders, color/size / small or regular iris. Good luck!

 

citruskull also makes beautiful eyes, as a commission as well!
One of her specialties is to make 14mm low dome eyes with 12mm or smaller irises. So those could work as well for Distant Memory boys.

After almost half a year of waiting - the make up artist I commissioned has finally sent me a few pictures of my (almost) finished boy!
I'm so excited! It was definitely worth the wait ... Mind that eyes/wig are hers, she had just styled the head for pictures to send. I still don't have him by the way ...

But I should have him by June, so probably by the end of August I should be able to present him in his full glory! His name is Villiam, by the way!

So are the Mattell BTS dolls the only BTS dolls you can buy now besides buying on the 2nd hand market? My daughter is in love with RapMonster and I wanted to get her a bjd of him. Did Distant Memory ever release the RM doll?

Sadly Author0509 cannot sell her BTS dolls due to copyright issues with BigHit. She posted a long post on Instagram about it.

Esthy’s Doll would be fine I hope since she named them differently even thou theirs sculpts look like BTS members.

 

At the moment, yes. You can find Distant Memory Jaeii heads second hand though, but the price is high and you need to get him body separately. Rm head was never released.
