Modification Différence between blush and makeup

Mar 16, 2024

    1. I acquired my Dreams dol a SOOM Amber and I would like to change some if her parts' colour. Problem is my understanding was makeup is the detailed work and blush was less detailed. So in my case gher faun legs would have been blush. But it feels like I'm completely wrong ? Could someone explain to me the difference because I think it got lost in translation and Now I'm also lost

I've been waited since 2009 for her so I don't want to mess this up

    2. Makeup and blushing can be interchangeable depending on the language used by the individual. Generally however, makeup refers to the faceup and "body blushing" refers to painting the body. If your Amber is blushed and has a faceup it means she has had all or part of her body painted. If she has a faceup, this is the painting of the face. Sometimes companies will use language like "body makeup" to refer to painting the body.

    3. While I understand wanting to know the term definitions, I fail to see why not knowing the exact difference between the terms matters when painting your doll.
I think the issue here is not that it's unclear what each term means, but apparently not knowing how painting a BJD works and what that all entails.

A face-up describes the full paint job that has been done to the face. Some companies/places call it "make-up", same as for humans, but the term face-up got more common because it describes better what is being done. On a human you just color in the existing face, on a doll you paint on the face itself...incl. lashes, eyebrows and so on. So face-up feels more fitting to use.

Blushing is a term used to describe both:
      1) a step during the face-up
      AND
      2) shading the body (often called "body blushing" to be more specific, or in case of hooves you'd call it "fantasy part blushing").
During the face-up it is the part where you shade the face and lay down the base colors. Just like you do on a human, when you put down blush during make-up. The next step is then painting on the details (lashes, eyebrow hairs, eyeliner, lip lines etc.).
On a body you usually just shade, you don't paint on any additional details. So you only do the blushing step, nothing else.

Because they are both essentially the same thing (shading the resin with pastels/airbrush), just done to different areas, they both require exactly the same materials, tools and way of working.
A body blushing tutorial is basically just half of a face-up tutorial :XD:

If you require more help and some tutorials, check out the FAQ and go to the Customizing category:
      THE BIG BJD FAQ
It has some tips especially for body blushing too. Body/fantasy part blushing can be a bit tricky if you want to ensure it can survive some posing. The touching/rubbing of the joints makes the sealant chip off immediately, which is very common on hooves for example. You want to mask off the joint area to prevent that from happening. Read for example “What's the best way to prevent chipping? Should I just add more sealant at the end?”.

    4. I assume you want to send your doll to a face up artist, and that's why you want to know the differences?

Shading is most commonly used outside these dolls, when describing body or face blushing. However, you can have as much details as you'd like, or as the face up artist will allow. Some people like adding veins, moles, freckles, tattoos etc not only to the face detailing, but also to the body shading.

I would say the main differences are the face up is really just limited to the face, and the body blushing to the body. It also depends on the artist doing the work. Some are a lot more detailed than others. In the end, it's kind of a choice how detailed the work you want done on your doll will be. Face up and make up are probably used interchangeably, but I have also seen people use it for body blushing. Although not as often. Hope that helps. (:
