Eyes Damaged eyes - what would cause this?

Four dolls, ALL with shattered acrylic eyes.
      Every.. single.. one.

wierdest part is, the dolls themselves have no damage. Just the eyes.
      what?

the damage in many places seems to be from the inside out too, you run a finger across the surface and you can't feel many of the cracks, most of them are INSIDE rather than the upper layer.

I've never seen anything like this before. What do you think? Is this just a thing that happens or what?

    2. It looks like they might've gotten too hot or too cold. Temperature changes can ruin acrylic eyes.

    3. What kind of eye putty are you using? I’ve heard of some types causing cracking in certain types of eyes.

    4. It's the putty causing it.
For example, for a long time Iplehouse used Super Sculpey as a putty when sending their dolls, which meant nearly all of them arrived with cracked acrylic eyes.

What kind of putty are you using at the moment?
You can easily test putty by putting it on a piece of acrylic plastic (like a CD jewel case for example) and just watch how it behaves over some time. Depending on the putty it might cloud the plastic, fuse with it or crack it.

    5. I've had the same happen to an older artist pet doll. I usually leave it in a box in my room and it doesn't really get too hot or too cold here, so I don't think it's the temperature.

From looking at my ruined eyes, I think it's probably whatever putty it came with. I have no idea what putty it is. It's the one that came with the doll and I've never switched out the eyes till now.

    6. Anything alcohol based can cause cracks to acrylics too.

    7. I also say it's the putty. I've had it happen once or twice. Now I always use this and have had no problems--
      Robot or human?

    8. Same here.

    9. AHAH, it probably is the putty. These were secondhand dolls and whatever Dollmore used it feels like sculpy-like stuff for sure. It's become very brittle and crumbly.

I tend to use white tac myself. It tends to age better imo.

interestingly, the 5th doll who had the same gross putty did NOT have cracked eyes. The one difference? She had the back stem pieces attached to the acrylics (to make them full rounds) and the putty was on THOSE, not touching the front part of the eye at all.
I think that's literally the only thing that saved them.
      I've replaced the putty now.

the others, sadly, their very pretty eyes are beyond hope unless I WANT a cracked eye look. Poor things.

I took all their eyes out and i'm scraping this stuff outta them, it didn't stick much to the resin, but it sure as heck CLINGS to the eyes themselves.

    10. This happened to a pair of my eyes too! I am glad people actually know what the heck happened because I just thought I dropped it or something and forgot

    11. I have gotten dolls with cracked acrylic eyes directly from Dollmore before, their putty definitely is problematic. Wonder why they still use it.
