Contest Customizing Contest ~ In brightest day, or blackest night! Winners Announced!

Aug 10, 2016

    1. DoA's 12th Anniversary Customizing Contest
In brightest day, or blackest night!

This year's face-up contest is based on the concepts of noon and midnight. You can pick either one, or find some way to utilize both!

      Rules

      1. Each member may enter ONE face-up design. Entries can be just heads without bodies. Entries can be shown styled with wig and eyes, but styling should not obscure the face-up.
      2. Face-ups can be executed in any standard medium: paint, pencil, pastel, or airbrush. Some non-standard materials may be used, but they should not be the main focus of the faceup.
      3. No Photoshop or otherwise digitally enhancing the face-up. Physical modifications to the sculpt are allowed.
      4. Face-ups should be created for this contest. Please do not submit work done prior to this event.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Prizes:
We will be offering three amazing blank heads as prizes for the first, second, and third place winners. The first place winner will have first choice between:

A Vincent head generously donated by Foveo
      [IMG]

A Lisette head generously donated by Maskcat Doll
      [IMG]

An Ophelia head in Cookie Skin generously donated by Merry Doll Round
      [IMG]

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2016.
Participants must be members in good standing.
Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Members who have joined the forum after June 30th, 2016 may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won past Customization contests may participate, but they are not eligible for prizes.
Out of respect for our donors, recast supporters may participate, but are not eligible for the prizes.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

      Submission

      • You may submit up to three views of the face-up. Each photo should be a maximum of 400x600 pixels (both portrait and landscape orientation are acceptable). One of these views MUST be a full view of the face. The format must be .GIF or .JPG. Your images should be minimally altered and should accurately represent the face-up.
      • Submissions should include a list of materials used, a description of any modifications made to the sculpt, the doll company and sculpt name, and a description of your inspiration. If you choose an obscure reference, please be sure to include an explanation in the submission description.
      • Entries will be not be included in the voting if they do not meet the submission guidelines: Photos must be in the correct format and size. There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, web address, or watermark. When voting is open, your images will be hosted on the DoA server and shown anonymously.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification. Submission photos must be hosted privately - if you host your images anywhere they are publicly available for viewing, your entry will be disqualified.

      Voting is now live!

    3. I'm super excited for this year's contest! It's been a long time since I've participated.

      I have just two questions.

If the design moves now onto the neck of the doll is it considered part of the faceup or just part of styling?

Also is this year's theme from the green Lantern oath?

    4. The contest is for the faceup, so any extra blushing on another part of the doll would just be styling.

And no, just the title of this thread is from Green Lantern. :sweat Just calling it 'Noon and Midnight faceups' sounded a little boring so we tried to spice it up! The theme itself is just noon and/or midnight. :)

    5. Would it be ok to use slightly less standard materials to augment the faceup? Things like rhinestones, glitter, metallic leaf, jewelry chains? Or should we just stick with the paints pencils and pastels thing? Thanks! Hopefully I'll have the spoons to enter this one as well. :)

    6. You can use some less standard materials to augment the faceup, but those materials should not be the main focus of the faceup. :) (I'll also clarify that in the main post)

    7. Thankies!!

    8. I might attempt this, too... Though with the current humidity in New England, I don't know if I'll be able to...

    9. Having exactly the same issue... CT here

      • x 1
    10. I feel you guys! :( I'm feeling the exact same way - I'd like to join for fun, but I'll have to see how the weather treats me!

      • x 1
    11. Well I managed to get things sprayed yesterday in the strangely cool 65 and breezy weather. We'll see if I get another cool day later on. XP

    12. Ahahaha the next few days are all forecast to be raining. :doh *sigh*

    13. Same in Massachusetts, USA. :sigh

    14. Looks like we're gonna be doing ok in my area after Wednesday. Hopefully it'll clear up on your all's end here soon

    15. Psssst, pass it on! ZM spray still works in high heat and humidity! :aninja:

I may attempt this one for funsies, it's a neat concept!

      • x 1
    16. Oh, no, my closely-guarded secret!! Lol, j/k!! :XD: ZM spray is my sealant of choice - I recommend it to everyone. For right now though, I'm running low and Volks is out of stock! :(

    17. @AirimirOfGondor Oh no, are they? I have a stockpile, but I wouldn't have recommended it if I'd known people couldn't get it quickly. Sorry, all! :...(

      • x 1
    18. Yeah, unfortunately, looks like they'll be out of stock until sometime 'later this fall.' :(

    19. I have called them twice to be told restock in July, and now August. LIARS.

    20. I am definitely going to try my hand at this! Now to brainstorm a concept. :?

    21. It's my understanding that they get things by slow boat from Japan and they don't always know exactly when one will arrive with particular items. They may have been giving you the wishful thinking estimate.

    22. Yahhhhhh I still use Testors cause I can get it super easy. I used MSC for a while, but that was expensive and a pain to order and wait for, especially because I didn't use it often. Maybe I'll look into ZM spray, but if it's never in stock I might have to pass. >w>;

    23. Just to double check, can we enter more than once if we happen to have two concepts in mind?

    24. I'm not a Mod, but have you read Rule #1 in the first post of this thread?

    25. Ah thanks for pointing that out :) I've been having a lot of difficulty keeping each of the different competition rules straight

    26. Ah! I love the Vincent and Lisette sculpts so much, I've been wanting to own them for so long! Looks like now is my opportunity to compete!

    27. Have you tried citadel purity seal? You might be able to get that at a local hobby shop or games workshop etc. They sell it at a board game store in my town. It works great.

    28. Can we add upper eyelashes?

    29. @Luckyl if you would like to, yes you can. :)

    30. Oh noes! I just realised this competition is going on! Good thing we still have couple of days. ∑(゚ロ゚〃)

      • x 1
    31. Getting down to the wire... To use lashes or not to use lashes....

    32. @The Raven I haven not tried purity seal before. Are there benefits to using it instead of Testors?

Aghhh the deadline is Wednesday! I was busy all weekend so I didn't work on my faceup at all. D: And I don't have a day off this week... hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can do it tomorrow and Wednesday. XP

    33. i want to participate! but i'm gonna feel bad about wiping my girl's faceup off.. :sigh

    34. You can probably enter for fun, but you can't compete for the prizes...
"This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2016."

    35. aww man, thanks for telling me! i might enter for fun :)

    36. Definitely read over the first post in the thread for all the important info.

    37. Just photographed my entry! *__* ♥ Thank you so much for such an awesome theme! Taking part and painting my doll again made me found again the love I had lost for the sculpt, and refine the character. Now I'm bursting with love and so excited! Can't wait to see all the entries, I'm sure everyone has done an amazing job with their face ups. :D Good luck to everyone! ♥

    38. Lashes! Always lashes! :chibi

I feel the same way! I wiped a back up head when the one a friend sent me to paint for the competition got lost in the mail (he showed up safe and sound today thankfully, just as I was photographing my entry) and I went from not caring about this head to loving it all over again. The power of faceups is mighty! :abow:

Good luck in the home stretch, everyone!

    39. I'm waiting for my camera to charge right now. I'm so nervous now ;.;

I can't wait to see what everyone has done!

    40. Like a dunce I got carried away doing the details before I did the base blushing, so it all ended up on one layer. I'll see if it's salvageable tomorrow or if I should just skip the contest... If I can make it work then that'll be good, but I still have to take pics and edit them to the size specifications, all before leaving for work at 2pm. *_*

    41. Good luck @Wolfie Pie ! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

    42. Ahahahaa thanks, @AirimirOfGondor! It seems my procrastination got the best of me. Maybe I can make it presentable for the contest and wipe it later. XD

    43. wow :aeyepop: i cant believe i'm entering, i didn't think i'd make it in time. It'd be way too much pressure to try and make the deadline tomorrow.
I just submitted my entry, could a mod let me know if the links work? thanks

      • x 1
    44. I just submitted mine as well!

I set the album on the hosting site to secret so no one could see it before everything is revealed. Mods, please let me know if that causes and issues.

      thanks~

    45. Just finished my face up! I'm going to wait until tomorrow to photograph and submit it so that I can get good, natural lighting.

    46. Really fast question cause I'm running out of time and this is more of an issue than I thought. How do I resize my image so it won't kill resolution? Every time I try to resize it sets super pixelated... 400x600 is really small...

Edit- Installed IrfanView onto my new laptop and used that. Turned out way better than Paint.net. Entry submitted! *_*

    47. Woohoo @Wolfie Pie! I knew you could do it in time! :thumbup

      • x 1
    48. @AirimirOfGondor Thanks! I was able to finish it when I got home from work around midnight last night, and sealed it this morning while it was still cool out. I'm bummed about the resizing, though. My images look okay, but they're not crisp like when I took them at their original resolution. 400x600 is a very small size for trying to see details on a faceup imo...

    49. What site should I upload the pictures of my face up to in order to provide an image URL?

    50. @Wolfie Pie : totally agree about the resolution. Just looking at the cropped and downsized versions made me super sad - so many details were lost! At least everyone has the same constraints? Lol

      • x 1
    51. @Auden anything that you can use a private album is fine (Photobucket and Flickr are the most popular).

    52. Just finished submitting! Do the URLs work alright? It said to have them end in .jpeg but I couldn't get the links to work without a couple numbers after the .jpeg.

    53. I'm so very second guessing myself on this. I did two designs without realising you could only submit one and then I had to chose one of the two to submit and now I keep feeling like I chose the wrong one...

    54. Don't worry @Hyperion! I'm sure whichever one you chose will be wonderful! :dance

    55. Thank you!! :)
