Customizing Contest - Voting!

Aug 24, 2016

    1. It's high noon somewhere in the world.... Or maybe midnight! ;)

Please take some time to look through all of the amazing faceups created for this contest! Contestants were challenged to create a faceup based on the concept of Noon or Midnight (or both!). The concept was open to interpretation, and materials were largely basic faceup materials. Artists were not required to list their materials, but some have done so.
When you have finished checking out the entries, please vote!

Voting is open to all members, including contestants! Voters have four points to distribute to four different entries
      based on the following criteria:
      • concept originality
      • creative use of materials
      • diversity of techniques
      • quality of execution
Each entry can only receive ONE point from each voter, so please choose a different entry for each criteria. If you vote for the same entry multiple times, ALL of your votes for that entry will be thrown out. Contestants are allowed to vote for themselves with ONE vote point.

      >>VOTE HERE!!<<

Voting closes on Tuesday, August 30th at Midnight EDT

    2. Entry #1

      About the Entry
I love dark faceups, but the darkness is never more vivid or noticeable than when paired with light and color. So I had that in mind when I created this faceup that I call "Bleeding Midnight".

I also have a great fascination for galaxy images, water and especially lakes under a night sky, so I let these influence me and the way I brought light and color into the face.

The greatest thing about art and fantasies is the lack of limitations when it comes to understanding the meaning of a word such as "midnight" or "the darkest night". The chance to go in a personal direction and follow your imagination ...

      About the Entry

I was inspired by the 'Midnight' theme, it made me think of all the pretty galaxy themed items that have been popular recently. I originally thought of doing a sun tattoo on the forehead to include 'Noon' as well, but decided to go with the moon and stay full Midnight ;)

I used MSC, airbrush paint applied with a paint brush, watercolor pencil, glitter, pastel, and gloss.

      About the Entry

I wanted to incorporated both day and night, inspired by the stars that rule those respective times. I used an airbrush, acrylic paint and metallic medium to create the background for the night side and then used acrylic paint applied with a sponge to blend the sides together like day fading into night. Finally opal dust was used to give the look a bit of glitter. Standard faceup materials were used for the rest of the faceup.

Aurora Borealis. The most beautiful night I can imagine. I chose that to be my midnight and the sun is my noon. It shines bright like all the other stars of the night so I used the eyes to represent it as they are the center of the face. Her lips are the snow of winter; who catch both sun and stars under the Aurora Borealis.

The only bank head I had available or this challenge was one in tan so it seemed only natural to do something noon-inspired. When I ended up with was something like a god of the summer sun. Bush fires are a big deal down here in the summer so I guess this is where he fits in.

      About the Entry

I wanted to satisfy BOTH day and night of the theme so I chose Claudia from Interview with a Vampire. With her fair skin and blond hair, but being a vampire and creature of the night, I though she fit very well.

I'm also a big fan of natural-looking face ups, so that was a consideration as well. I didn't want to have to do something that I was just going to wipe after the contest was over. Luckily, I have a character I'm working on shelling who fit the look, but he's male. I decided to go with it anyway and am very pleased with the result!

I used pastels, acrylic paint, watercolor pencils, and liquitex gloss for this face up.

    10. Entry #9

      About the Entry

I was inspired by my grandmother's old clock, the face of which is painted to show half day and half night. I wanted to show that duality too, and I chose to work with the Lilin wink face because its one closed eye forms a nice base for that duality. The open-eyed half of the face is noon, all light, washed out colours and blue skies with the gleaming gold of the sun as a highlight. The closed-eyed half is midnight, with the colours of the night sky and the silver twinkling stars.

Materials used were MSC UV-Cut, Van Gogh pastels, Caran D'Ache watercolour pencils, acrylic craft paints in metallic blue, gold, silver and black, and Citadel gloss varnish.

    13. Entry #12

      About the Entry

Midnight always makes me think of a starry sky so I wanted to try to personify that without using the standard "galaxy theme". I wanted my faceup to be simple, sleek and elegant. Sometimes too may ideas tend to make a faceup look crowded and messy. I went with three main colors--white, black and gold with black and gold being the colors that most represent the night sky to me and white being an artistic choice, a color I thought would complement the other two well.

His head cap down to his forehead are riddled with stars and constellations. above where eyebrows would normally be are the phases of the moon. The moon is very noticeable, especially on cloudless night so I wanted to make sure to place it in a very prominent place. I balance out the faceup by using gold to accent other parts of his face and use gold and black (the main colors) for his lips.

Materials: This faceup is basically paint and a touch of pastels. His head and head cap where spray painted white and black respectively. I went back with a second layer to cause a fade effect. All the gold is regular old acrylic paint as is the black on the upper lip. His eyelashes--originally brown--where also painted gold acrylic paint to match. Some pastels where used around the eyes.

      About the Entry
The theme of this years contest, to me, is about both contrast and symbolism. So I decided to incorporate both concepts of Noonday and Midnight into my faceup.

I wanted to focus on color first of all, both options are descriptions of the sky and nature. For midnight I thought of stargazing and the colors you see in the sky other than pure darkness when you are able to go somewhere with no night pollution at all. Purples and blues and stars.

The raven is a classic symbol of darkness, but they're also intelligent and sweet creatures. So a galaxy raven became the main focus.

Then for the transition I thought of sunset and sun rise, oranges and yellows and eventually bright sky blues. This eventually lead me to think of noon, sunshine and early summer. Sunshine always makes me think of flowers of all different colors, colors of daytime. So I wanted the raven to breakaway into a pile of roses and hibiscus flowers.

For the makeup itself I wanted to stick to the color theme, incorporating what I would use in the tattoo into the blushing and eyeshadow.

      Materials:
      Liquitex paints
      Rembrandt pastels
      Liquitex matte varnish and gloss
      An airbrush and various paintbushes

      About the Entry

I wanted to illustrate both the darkest night and brightest day in my faceup; however, I wanted to do the opposite of "High noon" and do a sort of "low noon" with the sun rising up from the bottom (of the faceup) to meet the Black Star (on her forehead). Like when the sun comes over the ocean's horizon to meet and overcome the darkness of the night. The rays of the sun reaching towards the heavens.

      About the Entry

The 2D character was designed for me by a friend. When I got this head, I decided to make a 3D shell based on the character. He's a gijinka (humanized) Pokemon fusion (Ghastly+Arcanine). Since he's a ghost, I went with the "Midnight" theme and used a lot of dark blushing on his face to emulate the clouds you sometimes see in the sky at night. To contrast the dark blushing, the bridge of his nose, cheeks and chin have white highlights to represent the full moon shining through on a dark night.
I used chalk pastels (rectangle sticks and pencil form) for the blushing and watercolor pencils (Derwent and Faber-Castell) for the details on the faceup.

      About the Entry

When I look at the night sky I wonder what an astrologer might think of a midnight moon and all those stars that surround it. Maybe he would think of it like a beautiful women, the kind that would intrigue you, you would want to approach, and talk to her, but her mysterious air keeps you speculating from afar, just like the night sky we could never know all her wonders. I wanted it to look like a drawing an astrologer might sketch in his notebook, and do something (hopefully) immediately recognizable as midnight.

      About the Entry

The objective of my faceup was to create the look of a young country boy with a sweet, gentle face. I tried to achieve this by giving him a bounty of freckles and a very light sunburn running from cheek to cheek across his nose. I was inspired to create this look after reading the book My Antonia, which took place out in the rural countryside of Nebraska. The materials used in this faceup were Mungyo Soft Pastels, Derwent Watercolor Pencil, Tamiya X-22 Gloss, Mr. Super Clear Matte Sealant, Daler Rowney detail brushes, and Dollmore eyelashes.

      About the Entry

I chose to create Erik for this challenge. I felt that his personality lent itself to my intention. He is both the brightest; a beautiful and most creative composer with the ability to see the majesty of life and bring it to his work, a savant, indeed an angel of music himself... though he is also the darkest; a monster capable of unimaginable evil and pain because that is what was visited upon him, all he knows, and so he does not understand how to walk in the light because of it. I wanted to capture both aspects of this challenge in one face and I could think of no one better to do it than the phantom, who holds both absolute light and impenetrable darkness within him.

      About the Doll

Mods: I ground out the basic shape of his cheekbone and jaw, made little pock marks and imperfections throughout the side of his face with a dremmel and then set him on fire with a blowtorch. I washed him thoroughly and then used acrylics for the remaining textural effects. A lot of that is made more severe by his face-up. The fire really just rounded him off so I didn't have to sand him.

    25. Just for Fun Entry!

      About the Entry

Midnight is a time of transition, and my inspiration came from a song on Dido's last album called, "End of Night," which is about taking back power after the dissolution of a harmful relationship. So my basic premise was endings being really about change, like the Death card in a tarot deck. I wanted her to look cold and maybe a little consumptive to go with the nighttime theme, and also resigned to something that makes her sad, but like she could shift expressions in a moment.

The tattoo is inspired by a couple generic examples I found through Google. I liked the idea of the moon shattering into stars, because it's not destroyed, just shifting into something new. I added a cat because A) cats make everything cooler, and B) I just wanted to see if I could pull it off.

Materials: Volks ZM spray, Rembrandt & Volks pastels, Liquitex & Golden acrylics, and a light dusting of Volks pearl powder.
