Customizing Chat: What's on your worktable?

Sep 28, 2007

    1. Ah, finally bit the bullet and started a bust reduction for Joey. Got a dremel and stuff, but it's still so hard! I keep telling myself to take my time, don't rush...but I want it done, and I want her in one piece again.

    2. I'm actually sculpting a puki sized BJD from scratch.

I want to mod my soom Mini-gem and give her double joints, as well as fix her limited mobility in the neck area. I also want to make her some anthro parts... so I started creating a mini bjd, to figure out how they work, what will stand the test of time, and what's going to be a pain in the butt when I go to start tinkering with it.

I'm probably doing way more work than I need to do, but I don't want to ruin my doll... I'd rather do all my test mods on something that was cheap, and that I can easily throw away without caring about it, if I ruin it too much.

Once I get everything figured out/perfected.

I'm going to make some anthro parts for my girl, including full goat/horse legs, horns, hoofs, and then some unicorn parts.

    3. Tattoos and piercings...again. I have an incoming new guy (Well, his body anyway), and he's going to be needing some hardware and ink. I've already given his head all the piercings and tattoos he needed, so now I just have to a)wait for his body to arrive, b) get my hands on some testors or MSC and c)figure out what body tattoos he's actually going to be recieving. His facial tattoos may need redoing as well, since they came out rather messy looking.

    4. I've finally circled back around in my long cycle of tasks and managed to get a head partially painted! XD
My Migidoll Noel arrived just in time for our anomalous heat wave, so I coated him after work one night. It was completely dark outside though, so he's got quite a bit of random dust motes in his MSC. Picked some of them out, but just decided to move on. Grabbed a little more time today and got a few layers of pastel done and a few eyebrow hairs picked out in pencil. I incorporated some of a Diane Townsend soft pastel (shown) into every color I mixed so the undertone is a sparkly champagne kind of effect. It's not as good as Volks Shine Pearl because the glitter flecks are larger and read as dust spots here and there, but I like the color a lot and it's got a great feel when brushed on the resin.

I've never worked with a face-plate before and I don't care for how I'm stuck holding it when I spray the MSC. Kind of nice when painting though!

    5. Taking advantage of the three day weekend to finish an Iplehouse Asa and Soo Ri
If all goes well I'll attempt a new face-up on a dark-skin Kamau, might even
re-think the "twin limb" for the Dollshe boys.

Hum, Diane Townsend soft pastel? These are chalk pastels, right?
Per the Blick site; which claims "...contain no chalks or fillers".
If that's true and its pure or (near pure?) pigment, they'd be perfect for use
      on a dark-skin Kamau.

    6. Yep! Very rich pigments. I've only bought a few of the glitters and iridescents because they are pricey and I've got my Grumbacher and Volks already, but there is a huge range of flat colors that would probably be great on darker skin tones. The brand shiny new Blick on Market St. is worth a trip anyway!

ETA: Nearly finished with the one Noel face-plate. I'm so relieved that I finished it yesterday morning before work, because the fog rolled in right on schedule today and the long weekend looks to be dank. Just need to add a little gloss and some eyelashes! XD

    7. St. James -- The shiny iridescent look is very beautiful! I would love to see it on a mahogany resin tone.

Aaack! I have to seam sand and/or blush about half of my crew. Since I have nearly completed all of my characters I have slowly come around to doing their body blushing as well. I just received my upgraded girl's head today, so faceups are always the main event! Once I get some more MSC at the end of the month, I can work on completing all the body work. :)

    8. I just started my first mod project out of boredom...I found some leftover clay last night and made an MSD sized head, so I'm thinking of doing a living statue sort of doll. I wanted to post a WIP thread but the head is an original, can I still do that?

      To Do:
      Obtain body--AOD MT-boy V. 2
Prime/sand/paint (dye?) head - dark grey
Mod body (add cracks, crumbles, etc)
      Paint (dye?) body
Blush head/body to look like stone
      Make clothes :)

    9. I'm afraid self-made dolls are not on topic for the forum, but I definitely recommend heading over to The Joint to post your WIP! :)

    10. Sweet, thank you :) I wanted to make sure before I did anything *goes poof*

    11. No problem! :)

      And while I'm here...

Finished my Noel a little while ago.

Did some work on my Volks Crystal boy today. So much more difficult than the Migi!! >__<
His eyes are not perpendicular with his nose and chin so getting his eyebrows to appear even was a b-i-t-c-h. So glad I learned the kneaded eraser trick a while back because a template would have been really frustrating. Even so, I spent so damn long on them that the sun went down and I'll have to wait for the fog to clear before I can seal them and move on.

    12. This wasn't in my original plans but she did end up getting put together first. I modified a Resinsoul MSD girl body to fit a SOOM Bygg head:

    13. Mire Lapin, your Asa looks great! Have you done any work on the Kamau yet?

I did manage to finish my Cristal boy. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I'm just glad the struggle is over. I used a few of Raphael's Madonna paintings as my source for a color palette.

Much easier than that one was my Lieselotte. She is such a cute sculpt I'm not sure I could have messed her up. I tried a few different eyebrow shapes using dark brown pastel and a kneaded eraser. I decided to go with a more open short style since she's a little kid.

Today I'm working on blushing my girlfriend's Chrom wolf parts. I don't have an airbrush, so it's all pastel. Very messy, haphazard and frustrating. >___< Have to get it done today though.

    14. @ St. James: No.
Being the flibbertigibbet that I am, I got side-tracked by hard cap wigs and shoe making. I need to make a decision on an airbrush compressor too.
Chrome legs without a airbrush; my aren't you brave?!
Both kids look good. Amazing how you get everything just perfect!

    15. Eh, well. They're done now...and I already chipped a toe. I went over the whole foot with black pastel on a squirrel brush, worked it all into the crevases with a smaller sable brush, buffed it with a cotton pad, and then used a kneaded eraser to remove all pastel from the higher relief portions of the fur. Same treatment with the claws; they've got a lot of marvelous cracks and streaks in them that catch pastels well. After sealing each piece separately, I went over it all again with a deep purple brown and this time erased less pastel. I think I should have erased more because I don't like the hard line between the beginning of the furry parts and the human parts, but since this will obviously have to be repainted, I'm not too put out.
I experimented with some Modern Masters sheer blue iridescent acrylic paint mixed with Liquitex gloss on the claws. Added another layer of streaky off white going with the grain of the claw growth, then another coat of diluted gloss and the claws have a sheen and depth to them that looks fairly realistic. I'll try to get a photo.

Thanks for the face-up complements! It's amazing what a really shallow depth of field can make look perfect, yes? ;) At least I've finally gotten over picking out each individual speck of dust with a pin between coats. Damn, talk about making one's hobby a punishment instead of a reward!

    16. I was trying to give Florian his very first face up, but then I noticed the spray I used had acetone in it...so I came here to look it up and it turns out Krylon isn't okay to use. o___o;; So I got it off in a hurry and he seems fine. The face up is on hold until I can find a more acceptable spray...

    17. "Eh, well. They're done now...and I already chipped a toe..." Seems this is happing to a lot of people who own the soom
      claws and hooves.
"....At least I've finally gotten over picking out each individual speck of dust with a pin between coats. ..." OMG NO!

      Can't wait to see!
I have a big bottle of Liquitex iridescent medium from when I used to paint - want some?

@musicalcakes: A lot of pepole use testors or you can order from Volks USA
      http://www.volksusa.com/zmfinishspray.html

    18. I think the six ounce jar I have will last me until almost forever, thanks!
      Here's the claws and paws:

The mottled texture is caused by the pastel floating a little in a too thick coating of Zoukeimura spray. The pastels run sort of like powder dye in water when the sealant is applied too closely and too heavily. But it was cold outside and I was rushing. :sweat

    19. (lol) "The mottled texture is caused by the pastel floating a little in a too thick coating of Zoukeimura spray..." Yeah, I found that out all on my own.
Other than the mottling they photograph well. You know, a make-up artists out there, somewhere, is getting paid good money for that exact mottling. So, how soon before you strip 'em and start over?(or is that just me?)

Oh, and I think I can post this here. It's what on my work table.
Cap is made with a nylon stocking and Elmer's Polyeurethane glue. Hair, fiber or whatever is then glued to the cap.
      Following is a test run.

    20. Honestly, it's usually about a year before I'll get to redoing something that's "finished." Between the number of dolls we have, and the scarcity of a day off that coincides with a break in our perpetually dank micro-climate, everybody has a loooong wait before their next turn to visit the dolly spa.

That wig cap is awesome and I want to see more shots of the process! But give us a link, because that kind of thing technically belongs in the other crafty subforum. :3

    21. I'm taking a deep breath, and preparing for my first eye mod. I'm opening the eyes of a sleeping MNF head. The challenge is really exciting, as I'm one of those "I can figure out how to do it myself" people, but I am still getting over that phobia of ruining my dolls. Slow & steady, I can do this :)

    22. my big project 2011 is dying my msd its the first time I've read a lot of tutorials here on DoA i've already bought the dye, the body arrive last month and the head arrived yesterday so on Monday i'll start + i'll have to do the faceup he will be my first tan boy i just hope i don't mess up ^_^ wish me luck:sweat

    23. A body blushing and scar mod. Woo!

    24. Your Lieselotte has such a beautiful face! The colours are really really gorgeous!

    25. Dragon tiny mod! and a Soom Unicenta blushing! Woo!

    26. Thanks! I just used the Volks pastels on her. I like the fact that they are already sort of "muddy" and neutralized colors because I have never been very good at color mixing. :sweat

This week's project is opening the eyes of the Feeple 65 Dreaming Human Roke faceplate I just got. I'll also be changing the shape of his mouth a bit and piercing his ears. Super excited about the faceplate thing with this particular guy because the ear piercing is going to be so much easier without the rest of the skull in the way (like on a regular head) and he's got a lot of earrings!

    27. I'm mostly finished, but I've been modding my doll so that s/he looks like s/he's becoming a tree, 'Daphne and Apollo' style. They're semi-temporary mods, so they can be removed with no lasting damage to Altair, but they probably can never be reattached. Currently his right arm and right leg are a tree limb (I used several actual tree branches to get the right look) and trunk, respectively.

I removed his foot and his arm from below the elbow ball and rigged his arm so that the tension was kept the same and used extremely sturdy steel mesh so that she could stand and support the heavy branch. I had to use a rod running down his right arm going to the shoulder of the left to keep the limb raised. The complete limb is longer from base to tip than Altair is tall.

I may update this post with pictures sometime.

    28. Chibiwing, please do post a photo! I'd love to see how you jointed the wood portions into the sockets.

    29. My projects have been in a stand still for about a month because I'm going through a very large artist block coupled with depression. But something coming up is dying my old Dollfie Dream 1 body and 03 head into a darker skin tone. I'm making her into a twin sister for my other 03 head which is on a DDDy body. I've already asked around the workshop about what to use and it's either RIT dye or a vinyl spray paint. I'll probably buy both and test them out on some dummy vinyl doll parts that I don't use.:)

    30. I second that!! I'd love to see photos...

    31. I'm working on repainting everyone's faces. o.o It's the first time in almost 3 years; they're way overdue and I'm way out of practice. The Obitsu are being done simultaneously in stages (did the whites for all but one last night) but Val really needs a day dedicated to him. Crossing my fingers for good weather this weekend; this ill be only my second faceup ever! o.o

    32. I'm working on a face-up and some minor mods to my BBB Pandora. At this point I've sanded down her nipples, since it had been frustrating me that she constantly looked frozen and I'm much happier with them now. Her body has also been blushed, although I'm adjusting the colours and contouring a bit since I'm not totally happy with it.

I'm going to be starting on her face soon, but that's been more difficult since I've had two conflicting ideas about how I want her to look, but my first task will be to sand her eye sockets to make them more even - there's a couple of small bubbles/dents in the resin and I want it to be smoother.

    33. I am working on a face-up for my Shrine Maiden (Resinsoul Li) Also making afew outfits for some trades and some other items!

    34. Working on opening the eyes and reducing the fatness of the lower lip on my Feeple Dreaming Roke. I've done all I can with the ceramic knives and I'm now waiting for a little time to do the sanding. The unseasonable rain is kind of unmotivating though, since there's no chance of painting him once I've finished the sanding. I should really know better by now. Best to be ready for that one day in the month when I actually have time to paint and the weather is right!

    35. I hear you on the rain. Makes it hard to spray sealant outside and the cats inside make spraying there difficult. :/

I've decided to go for it!!! I'm going to customize my dryad full hog, not just give her a temporary faceup like I planned. She's in pieces right now and probably will be for a little while as I gather supplies. In the mean time, the Obitsu are nearly complete and Val is getting his THIRD faceup since I ruined the last attempt...

    36. Finally ordered the body for my new mod project, so I'll be working on the head until it gets here <3 Making myself an alien~ He's getting giant iruhi ears from featherfall first. Gotta sand them slightly so they fit lower on his head and get a set of magnets to keep them there. Then faceup is in order and modding the neck. It's a MSD sized head going on a Rosette body so it'll need neck work or it'll probably fall right through xD

    37. I'm about to finish up a Batchix Junkcast Machina. His name is Omicron and he's got a lot of work to do on him... he's got ir bubles, some parts have still the gates on, the channels need trimming and he need sanding and some reconstruction with milliput. And that's all before I can paint him so he's going to be a long wind project. Starting tomorrow as I need to get Milliput, files and some sandpaper. :)

    38. Working on a new face-up on DT Elysia and waiting for another body to match it all up...getting impatient I must say...sewing also.

    39. I'm finished modifying my Roke! :D

      Here's a crappy Before shot:

      And After:

I lightly sanded his brow bone, opened his eyes, and removed a good portion of his lower lip. For the sanding I used wet/dry paper in 400, 600 and 1500 grits and fine and superfine sanding sponges. It takes a lot of work to get the transition line between an area that has been carved down to match the rest of the planes of the face without any traces of shadow showing from any angle, so I gave myself three hours of sanding time to either finish it or call it good enough. Finished in two hours and fifty minutes!

I also did his ear piercings. I don't like the way it looks when earring holes are drilled all the way through - because resin just can't duplicate flesh when it comes to piercings - and glueing all that on would be too fussy, so I used my pin vise to drill tiny divots in the front and back of the ear so that 22 gauge sterling wire will snap into place and be able to swing freely like a real earring. I may invest in some non-tarnishing silver wire to make all of his earrings. Even though I'll sand each earring tip to a rounded point, I don't want to scratch his sealant taking them off to polish them.
Here's a shot of the test earring and the rest of the earring "holes."

    40. St. James...I really like how you did the earring holes...I have never liked that "hole" look and after doing one dolls ear, I gave up the task ...just didnt look natural.....so ..after reading your article , I got the idea of using a engraving pen that has a VERY small head on it, and it worked wonderful. Thanks for the gerat advice!

      • x 1
    41. You're welcome, safrun! I'm glad it worked for you. :) I haven't decided if I'm going to use the same method for his facial piercings. The nose ring I'll probably just file to points and clamp in like a hog ring, and I'm thinking it might be better to glue on the others. I'm far more likely to screw up glueing than drilling though. :doh

    42. Well make sure you post the finished product..the nose ring will look interesting...your braver than me...I also like how you lessened his lower lip...great job. Will be looking for your finished/or in process pictures.

    43. The silver wire will be here next week! :D Hopefully I'll have time and good weather to do his face-up in the meantime.

    44. I'm currently painting my JID Asa's face up and next will be trying to make her posing work a little better. She's doesn't sit well. So I'll be sueding her joints and probably looking into what "wiring" entails before I decide whether I'll be changing any of her joints with more drastic mods.....

    45. I just started doing work on my first face up and already the face looks really great in that it looks the way I want it to...my next few things I need to is that I want him to have a facial tattoo that is basically three starts that outline his eyebrow...so just barely over the eyebrow that go from small to larger....I think I want to use a stencial to do this so that I get it exactly where I wan it to be on his face...but I am un sure how or what to use to do this. Its not really an un heard of pattern for a tatoo but usually with people its on the ankle...not to mention I am not sure if I did find this I how I would make it smaller for his head. I am sure its easier then I am making it out to be..just newbie.
I would like to try and do piercings on him as well one that is on the very base of his nose in the middle of the two eyes. I know there is a term for this but I forget what it is. a chin piercing and an eyebrow one....at least both lobes pierced and a helix on his right ear. He is an obitsu head so I think it will go easily enough. But yes if you can lend any advise that would be wonderful I'd love to get some opinions.

    46. kala83 you could use batchix's eyebrow stencil template to do that tattoo. All you really need to make a stencil is a piece of paper, some pastel powder and a fluffy brush. Or you can brush on the pastel and use a kneaded eraser to erase it back to the shape you want. That's how I do eyebrows.

I'm actually at that step in my Roke's face-up.
Everything so far is done with pastels and I just swiped the eraser along the underside of the eyebrow to get a clean line.
My first attempt at doing his face was total fail: too obvious black eye shadow nonsense and I tried to match the weird purple undertone of his body resin and ended up makig him look undead. All well and good, but not what I was going for at all.

His eyebrows still look a little uneven in their starting point, despite having changed them about eight times. Hopefully I'll have time to do more tomorrow! :D

    47. Finished painting my Roke's face. :D Still need to make all of his facial jewelry, but other things take priority at the moment. Today, working on opening the eyes of my GF's Roderich and maybe doing a little sanding of her Shinji. It's such a gorgeous day though, all I really want to do is go to the park and read under a tree. :sweat

    48. I'm doing my very first faceup. I wiped my Souldoll Tiffee's old faceup and coated her with MSC. That's as far as I got before I ran out of time (and courage). I'm going to pick up some more supplies and see if I can get started this weekend. :)

    49. Currently on my worktable of projects....

--Getting Icarus cleaned and redo sealant, and tattoos, eventually reblush. **DONE
--Gathered materials for the "Grand Automail Project" (actual METAL automail for Edward Elric)**DONE
--Start work on the automail project **IN PROGRESS, currently resizing up patterns of the automail pieces to 60cm scale...
--Get Ed blushed, do scar work and faceup **Getting done this weekend...Kymera is helping me with this one *huggles*
--Clean and re-tattoo Tsuna, work on his wig and finish his piercing work.

I'm sure I will probably post up a blog thread and stuff as the Automail project gets underway, as I think it would be an interesting endeavor for everyone to see it come to fruition. Especially since i will be using .005mm craft aluminum instead of epoxies or clays for the modifications and stuff

    50. I was just thinking about watching that show over again, in some fantasy world where I have time to do things like that. Are you laying the aluminum sheet over the doll's resin arm as though it were armor or are you actually going to attach sheets to the resin and build the detailing onto it? From what scale of pattern are you resizing the parts?

    51. Cleaning up/sanding my Unoa & preparing my very first faceup (<-- pretty intimidating) :O

    52. sewed a petticoat for my doll, recolored the lips and regloss it

    53. @St. James
I plan to be actually be laying it over, so it will be more like the arm of a suit of armor. The pattern is several sets cultivated from a handful of my buddies of the Risembool Rangers who all do Edward Elric cosplays and have somewhat gotten the arm structure down to a science (IE: gotten together patterns that are as close tot eh actual arm in the series). They have graciously shared there patterns with me and I am using them (along with a small stockpile of Ed pics on my computer) as a base to redesign by hand using then as a guide, where I am hand drawing the pieces over on new sheets to scale I need, so I can craft the aluminum. The rivets will probably be tiny plastic domes painted silver and so on... There will probably be a undermesh (might use small whole fishnet stockings) and maybe a few tubes under there too...The hand will be painted more then likely, though I plan to replace it later with jointed hands painted and modded to look like automail.

Mind you, the leg itself is a project unto itself, being I will be crafting the pattern from full scratch as there has yet been anyone to do the leg as armor format. Most cosplayers use a grey or silver tight painted to look like it.
So suffice to say... pics of Ed leg and my buddies mini Ed statue of him in just his boxers will be coming in handy...XD
I mean I will probably do a sock of the fishnet with a black lycra or something under the armor to allow for velcro or some sort of snaps so I can have so the pieces can attach to the arm in a way so they stay secure in place.
Suffice to say its a big project to say the least.

Both basically are going to be full metal no epoxy or such planning to be used off hand...

    54. Hmm, since the automail isn't going to be an actual modification to the resin parts, you might want to post your project thread in the sewing section then. Some other members have done some cool armor projects and may have some tips for attaching it.

    55. I probably will when the time comes I finish gathering everything to start it up. I think though it will depend on the final method as to what I am going to do. I have no plans to use any epoxy of make direct mods to the resin, but that could change, being I might use a little to do mods to the hand area to make it look more like a mechanical hand. Either way, it will be a fun project and a interesting experience to teach and learn from.

    56. Sanding, sanding and sanding :'3 I'm trying to restore my old WS Delf, I've got a couple parts sanded and a lot more to go.

    57. Hello! -waves- I haven't been lurking around here for a while. I'm debating on scrubbing down my tree girl soon... the buildup of sealants has given her this dingy skin tone that I'm definitely displeased with. I was wondering if I could bounce ideas off you guys?
I was thinking for her bark, since I do want to keep that, does anyway know a way to seal it without having to do 30 layers of MSC/ZM spray? without it being dipped in laquer or something totally and completely permanent?

    58. Customizing a steampunk outfit for my tanned Limhwa Mano and restringing him. I've never tried to restring a doll before so this is going to be a little scary for me. >.<; Also, going to try giving my Luts Man '08 a face up. Just bought some pastels from Soom. Will see how this goes.

    59. Currently in planning - Tattoos on my DollFamily MSD, he has a large back piece and a smaller tribal on his arm that I couldn't do over the ridiculously humid summer, and now that it's not so humid maybe I can get to work. XP After that it's a large number of sewing projects, mostly his. XD

    60. I forgot about this thread... I need to lurk here more often! What don't I have on my workbench?!? I'm toying with the idea of testing a bleach made for restoring white-wall tires on a pair of Dikadoll hands to lighten them slightly... I don't have high hopes, but it's something I've never tried. I'm also fiddling with a Roonodoll to give her knee locks and make her stand. That's going well so far!
