Crochet Crochet? Vol 3

Jun 7, 2014

    1. Thanks, everyone! The House Elves are my first bjds from DreamHigh Studio. I fell like a ton of bricks! :)

    2. To quote a certain Frozen snowman, "Oh, I love it even more!" Exquisite dress and jacket!

I prefer decreasing to increasing. Somehow I always end up with a better dress shape that way. I usually change to a different stitch to accommodate the bust. The CREAA girls are shaped like super-thin models so the pink dress was relatively easy.

      Thank you @auntbear!

    3. Understandable. I really need to explore more stitches when making garments. I got little dresses made out of more intricate stuff but I never had the guts to do that for my MSD's - they got more casual stuff.

    4. I usually learn a new stitch when I see one that I absolutely want to use. Some of them turn out to be so easy I wonder why I didn't try them before, like the shell stitch. Right now it's the chevron stitch that's calling to me. As soon as I get some spare minutes I'll sit down and try it.

    9. I love Eva's dress, @Kima - such tiny, intricate stitching!

Great work on the shawl, @Jany. Wish I could see the legwarmers better. Do you have a photo that focuses on them?

OMG, @El BJD - that hockey mask is a hoot! What a great idea!

    14. She looks so lovely in those colors. They look beautiful.

I'm making Noah a sweater for part of her Christmas outfit. I'm gonna make her a dress to go under it and a scarf. I'm debating making the scarf in Crochet thread so I can go into some more intricate patterns. I'm using mandala baby magic moon.

    15. All of your work is sooo pretty! I am very jealous, my crochet skills are not too good. Does someone have tips to use human patterns for dolls? I know that for dollfie dream you should make the pattern 1/3 scale but I don't know how to do that :frownyblush:

    16. In the human patterns you will usually find a gauge requirement represented as so many stitches per 4 inches. Multiply that by 3 for 1/3 scale or by 4 for 1/4 scale. So if the human pattern calls for 10 stitches over 4 inches then for 1/3 scale you would need to use fine yarn and a hook that would allow you to get 30 stitches over that same 4 inch measurement.

      • x 1
    17. I see! I didn't know there was a requirement. That will be very helpful, thank you!

    18. You're welcome. You may occasionally run into a pattern written by an inexperienced person and it won't have a gauge listed, but then, in most cases, accurate sizing goes right out the window!

    19. that's why i love making msd sized clothes. you just take the gauge and make that number of stitches over an inch instead

    20. Me too. In the beginning 1/3 scale had me confounded. But if you get the number for 1/3 scale over 4 inches you can always divide that number by 4 to get the per inch gauge that is more appropriate when measuring for doll clothing. So a human size scale of 10 stitches over 4 inches multiplied by 3 for 1/3 scale, then divided by 4 to get the scale over one inch. 10 x 3 = 30 30 divided by 4 = 7.5

Of course it goes without saying that my use of 10 stitches over 4 inches is just an example and the actual pattern gauge could vary from that considerably. I know that YOU know that auntbear, but I don't want to assume that everyone would understand that.

    21. 'tis true. of course my math tends to be for smaller sizes since my msd's are my biggest dolls, but in principle it is the same. i just recently made a jacket and pants for a friends childhood doll that is just under 3 inches tall out of sewing thread to get the scale fine. since that doll is ot, here's a picture of my realfee instead with her crocheted hat and knit sweater

    23. thank you :) realfees are the perfect size to work with. lace weight yarn looks in scale, but they are small enough that it doesn't take forever!

    24. I agree. I kind of regret selling my Realfees now. I miss Flame and Trixie, and like you said, they seemed the perfect size. If I'm honest with myself though, I do have to remember that none of my dolls have gotten much attention the last few years. I'm down to just the two DreamHouseStudio House Elves now.

    25. they are a good size too. which ones do you have?

    26. I have Ben and Willie. I've styled Willie as a female.

    27. willie makes a great girl! she is the one i really wanted to get, but was too slow ordering. i have aldou though, and he is waiting impatiently for me to make him some more clothes :) maybe i'll have time over christmas?

    28. I bought my Ben only because I missed out on the Willie. I don't care for him nearly as much. The Willie I scored one day when a second hand one came available on Facebook. I also really love the look of Aldou. I don't have one but also won't be adding to my dolls anymore.

    29. i've really slowed down trying to spend more time making stuff for the ones i have, but am keeping an eye out for a willie

Last night I crocheted a little cape for Ophelie. It's getting cold outside and except for her dress and her shawl she has nothing really warm to wear.
I guess I should also explore techniques to sew (or crochet?!) her some boots. Poor thing ;).

    31. it's perfect for christmas!

what doll is ophelie? she is lovely

    33. cute, did you crochet her wig too?

    34. Thanks. Yes, I crocheted her wig as well.

    35. Now that's a nice sweater dress :). I especially like the back.

Ophelie is a Youpladolls Ophelie. Yes, you see I'm not so creative with giving names, some of my dolls just keep their sculpt names ;D.

    36. @Sharkyra Thanks! Your cape is lovely; my dolls tend to keep their names too :)

I've crochet boots using this pattern as a starting point.

    37. I have an unfinished sweater that I based on a human sized sweater tutorial on youtube. I'm new to crochet so I didn't realize that I needed more than a ball of yarn for it. I'm so dumb :atremblin

    38. How big is your ball of yarn? And what size is the sweater you are crocheting?

Made an undergarment set for Noah using an Ellowyn Wilde pattern. Fits her pretty great. (It's actually a swimsuit pattern but I modified the panties to not have ties) definitely gonna use this for my other girls and modify the bottoms to be briefs for the boys too.

    42. I love your shoe pattern, Tephra! Just went to Ravelry and bought it :) and am looking forward to making some up for my JID and Limwha Girls.

    43. Hello! I'm not as experienced as you, but I'd like to share my first crochet project for dolls! I got this pretty pattern on Ravelry, and modified it some. So happy with how it turned out!

Edit: Forgot to mention, the doll in picture belongs to a dear friend and we always exchange dolls!

    44. Does anyone have any tips for turning adult scale patterns down to an msd size?

I can just insert measurements when they are given, but sometimes I have to guess at what scale to do.

Also kind of related to last question, what size yarn/hook do you use to get diffrent weight/textures?

I made some scarves with a 3 weight with a size 3 hook and have been pretty successful. I have used a size j for a super bulky look, too.

      • x 1
    45. Use lace weight yarns and the thinnest thread hooks you can handle. You will have to swatch and recalculate.
I do not like using cotton, especially crochet cotton, because it is too stiff for doll stuff. It is mostly made for doilies and such that are meant to be washed and bleached and will need to withstand the treatment.
I found it is the easiest to find human patterns in bulky yarns and go from there.
Look on Ravelry, there are tons of doll patterns there.
Remember that MSD might be 1/4 as tall as real people, but they are much thinner than mere quarter of our sizes.

    46. I do the same as Uggst suggests when it comes to choosing patterns.
I've found that lace-weight bamboo crochet thread has nice drape to it, but I also don't mind using very fine cotton crochet thread, size 30 or thinner. I do have some silk thread I've been meaning to try out for crochet. I tend to use hooks in sizes 8 and smaller, which can sometimes be harder to find in craft stores, but you can get them online.

    47. Where do you get your threads?
I'm assuming it would be readily available at sewing/fabric stores??

    48. Laceweight bamboo thread is available at Micheals. For size 30 or finer crochet thread I've never had much luck in department stores and even in local yarn stores it's rare to find that fine. I haunt second hand and thrift stores in the vintage craft supply sections. Punch needle thread also works very well. I find that sometimes at Value Village.

This little dress is the first serious bit of crochet I have done in over 20 years. I saw this cute baby dress pattern on Etsy and thought I could adapt it for my Irrealdoll Boo, I think I could have started with a touch bigger neckline. It's made of DMC coton thread with a .6mm crochet, worked from the top down.

      • x 9
    50. So pretty! By "DMC cotton thread", do you mean and embroidery thread, or was it maybe perle cotton?

    51. I either buy thread online, or find it at thrift stores. It's not the same as sewing thread, though I suppose you might be able to crochet with silk sewing thread. In Portland, OR, there's a second hand craft store called SCRAP where I like to look through the yarns and fabrics. There are often unusually fine textiles and yarns I can make work for dolls. I've found interesting things at yard and estate sales, too. Sometimes a person tatted or crocheted in the past and kept their old and finer threads.

Some yarn stores have very fine lace weight wools and silks, so I try to buy them when I see them.

    52. There are tons of cheap thin yarn on ebay. it is not good enough for human clothes, but it is good for doll stuff since you do not have to worry about peeling and wear.

    53. hi all, it's been another stressful year but i'm hoping to get back into dollies again now. here's my first offering a crochet pillow for the boys, modeled by eilidh, cause the boys were too busy playing
