Crochet Crochet: Pukipuki sized dress and bloomers

Mar 15, 2014

    1. [IMG]

Blue and black pukipuki dress and bloomers

      Materials:
Sewing thread in two colors (I use thread that is available at Walmart and Fabricville in cones of about 1500m, It's 100% polyester, and very soft, and slightly fuzzy. I believe it is used for serging when sewing)
0.5mm crochet hook (mine is a clover soft touch, which has a handle that is very comfortable to hold, and a cap for the hook so it doesn't get bent or stuck. Website: http://www.clover-usa.com/p/soft-touch-steel-crochet-hooks?pp=24 )
5 buttons, 3mm in diameter (these are very tiny- I got mine on ebay a few years ago)
      3mm (1/8") ribbon approximately 30cm (11 3/4")
      fine sewing needle
elastic cord or thread (you want something thin- brace elastics can work, as well as very small hair elastics. Using premade elastics removes the need to use superglue, but may be difficult to find in the right size)
      superglue

      Gauge: 9 sc = 1cm, or 45 sc = 1"

Note: I use American crochet terms.
      Glossary of abbreviations:
      MC- main colour
      CC- contrasting colour
      ch- chain
      sl st- slip stitch
      sc- single crochet
      dc- double crochet
3-dc cluster: In the stitch or space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull thru two loops. Repeat this twice more so there are 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull thru all 4 loops.

      To sew shoulders:
Decide which side is the front (as both sides look the same, it's purely a matter of preference). With the wrong side facing you, hold the bodice so the front is facing you, and fold one back to line up with the front. Using one of the tails, whipstitch the stitches of row 14 from the front and back together to form shoulder. Fasten off and repeat for the second shoulder. Weave in ends and turn right side out.

Thread a needle with MC, and line up the buttonholes to mark the placement for the buttons on the buttonband. (I marked each spot with a small safety pin, removing them as I went). Sew buttons on firmly.

Using tails from the sleeves, carefully line up sleeves with armholes, lining up the 8 skipped sc on row 7 with the 7 skipped sc of row 3 of bodice. With wrong side of bodice facing, whipstitch sleeve to bodice, easing where necessary. Fasten off.

      Weave in all ends.

Weave the ribbon thru the ch 1 spaces in the bodice for a sash, to tie in the back. Alternatively, you can cut the ribbon in half and sew one end to each placket in back and use the ribbons to tie a bow in the front.

      Bloomers in next post.

    3. Bloomers:
With elastic thread or cord, make a loop and tie a knot firmly. (For ease, I use a highlighter marker as it's close in size to a pukipuki waist). With the superglue, place one drop on the knot and allow it to dry thoroughly. When dry, trim the loose ends of the elastic as close as possible to the knot. This will make the elastic waist of the bloomers, and can be used to make a stretchy neckline for puki clothes (I have used it successfully to start necklines for dresses that require no fasteners whatsoever).

1: With MC, join with sl st to the elastic thread. Ch 1 and work 48 sc over elastic thread. Join with sl st to first sc. Ch 2. (48 sc)

17: With CC, join with sl st in first ch 3 loop, ch 1, sc in same loop. *7 sc in next loop, 1 sc in next loop.* Repeat from * to * 17 times. Work 7 sc in last loop, and join with sl st in first sc of round. Fasten off, leaving a tail for weaving in.

      Finishing:

Weave in all ends. Dress your doll and admire your work. :D

      Suggestions:
With this pattern, you can make a lot of dress variations for your doll. I have not tried all of these, but I hope they give folks a jumping off point. I love to crochet, and I love my dolls, so I am happy to share with anyone who feels the same.

      Bodice options:
-Omit sleeves and work one row sc around armhole for a sleeveless dress/top.
-Add 6 sc rows to the bodice before separating for front and back to make a bodice that lands at the waistline (this one has a waist just below the arms).
-Reverse the pattern and you have a simple pattern for a cardigan/front closing top (this may require adjusting the pattern to ensure the neckline sits properly)

      Sleeve options:
-Don't work any increases to have a nice short sleeve.
-Add more rows to the sleeve before separating for armhole to make the sleeve longer.

      Trim and skirt pattern:
ANY stitch pattern you like can be used in place of the trims and the stitch pattern on the skirt to make them more suited to your tastes and your doll.

      Buttons:
These are tiny 3mm buttons. I found mine on ebay, but if you cannot find any, you can always use small beads, or snaps instead. If you use snaps, don't work the buttonholes.

Please enjoy, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask! :D

    4. Meredith, I saw that blue dress and thought, how am I going to figure out how to make one as I have to have it for my pukipuki. So, when I saw you had given the pattern I was elated. Thank you so much. My pukpuki is just getting final details on faceup so ready for clothes.

    5. You are very welcome :) I look forward to seeing your little one in it!

    8. Thank you Eleona! I located a teeny .5mm hook, now to find threads so I can give this a try. I have gone sewing thread small before, but usually stick to Lizbeth size 20 and perle cotton in 8 and 12. I'm always up for a good pattern and challenge though :)

    9. Welcome! I look forward to seeing your work!

    10. I'm a little confused. I've worked up to the end of the bodice part, but it seems like the math is a little off. Following the instructions, I've got 8 stitches for the bottom of half of the back part, 7 stitches skipped for the armhole, 17 stitches for the base of the front part, 7 more stitches skipped for the other armhole, and then 8 stitches for the bottom half of the other back part (although a typo in the instructions says 7). 8+7+17+7+8=47. The instructions say the piece is supposed to look the same from either right side or wrong side, but the way I've worked it up, I'm left with two unworked stitches on one side, which forms an odd "tab" on the side. Is it supposed to be an overlap?

Getting back to the other side of the back piece...
Now, I can see that it's supposed to be constructed much like the other back piece, but I'm still perplexed at the "leftover" stitches. The second part of the pattern has instructions for buttonhole plackets, so there shouldn't be any need for any overlap in the bodice pieces. Am I supposed to count 8 stitches for each armhole instead of 7, or do I need to count 9 stitches for the base of each back piece to even it out?

    11. No, you are absolutely correct. It IS supposed to be 9 for each back. A typo on my part that I did not catch. Thank you for that. I will be editing the pattern to correct my mistake!

    13. And thank YOU for spotting it! :D

    14. This look fabulous! Its so sad that I could never go past the second row learning how to crochet

    15. The result is beautiful. Thanks for you for the sharing.

    16. Such beautiful work, the dress is lovely! <3
Thank you for posting your pattern, Eleona. I am hoping to try it with a slightly thicker thread and larger hook to scale it up for my Supia Baby who is roughly the size of a PukiFee.

    17. Thanks for this pattern! I'm definitely going to give it a go at some point though like rosehollow I may also try to size it up with a larger hook and thread as well as attempt it in this size for one of my off topic babies.
