Hey guys i'm a 3D modeler with experience in creating characters and props ! This time i thought I would apply my skills to creating a BJD since creating figurines and collectibles has always been a dream of mine! Hopefully, I'll be able to update the full process of creating this 1/4th girl. Critique is always welcome(please don't be shy about it) Hopefully, this thread can help guide people on making a BJD of their own and I'll try and post as much information as I can about what I know during this project! UPDATE(3/10/2019) My new idea for this gal is to create an android girl with interchangeable armor parts and many different option parts for customizability! Here's the first pass of her body From early January 2019)
It's very nicely sculpted. I'd love to learn to do this, what program do you use? I love her thicc bottom half. For me personally, the head is a bit large, makes her look younger than I'd like. But that is just a preference. I think maybe she needs just a little something to make her stand out a bit. Maybe work on her expression, take something a little further to give her some more character?
Aaah, I looove her! Bottom-heavy gals are my absolute favorite and I love that her feet and calves are thicker as well- normally when I see designs like this it's usually just the thighs/hips that are widened. Her breast shape is super nice too!!! I would say maybe her butt could be bigger? Since just looking at the side view it looks a bit disproportionate with the large thighs.
Her body looks great! I think I would agree with Shotime in that her head is slightly larger than aught to be, (think 7 and 1/2 heads tall as the "golden rule" for proportions). Do you think you're going to have the finished product of her fingers splayed out like that or are you going to relax them more? or make the balled up?
Oh gosh hey guys haven't updated in a while and my idea for her has gone into a more realistic direction! Planning on making an android girl now! But thank you for all the nice comments, it has encouraged me to work on her even harder than before! Heres is a newer update of a different idea I have in mind. Shes still on the thicker side just more realistic now. Once she has a bigger bust option part her curves will be way more noticeable!
Hello Sorry for the late reply! I use Zbrush to sculpt organic figures and Maya to 3d model hard surface objects! Thank you for the kind words and the crit for trying to make her stand out. I think I'm going to create an android girl with interchangeable armor parts to help her pop out of the crowd! Thanks, for much for the suggestions and compliments! I have updated a new version of her now! She does look completely different, but she is now more anatomically correct! Hello! and thank you for the compliments. I have a new updated version of her now which is more on the realistic side, but she is still a bottom heavy girl~ and the fingers splayed out is just a proxy pose for the hands. I'm hoping to have many different hand poses for this gal in the future including a more relaxed pose and fists! I'm planning on making this gal have double joints in the future!
Update 3/13/2019 I finally finished placing all my proxy joints in for my girl (we shall name her Capri) yesterday! This is just an approximation of where I want her joint to go and how they will look like before I start adding joint channels and hollowing out the doll. Since I'm done with the proxy I will be able to do a test print of her at a smaller scale in order to get a proper Idea of what she will look like in the real world and to fix any aesthetic problems that may occur. Hopefully, I can get my printer up and running to do those test prints today! Right now though my 3d printer is having some issues printing out a good quality first layer, so I have to fix that before I start printing her out.
Update 3/14/2019 I did a test print of Capri yesterday to see what she would look like in real life. So far I'm really happy with the print and surprisingly she can stand with little effort! I also completed my logo design to put on her head back/ any packaging I may do. What do you guys think?
I really really like the revisioned doll! How tall she stands? Also the pink colour is so pretty even for a prototype haha!
Aww thank you! I’m glad I took a break from her for a little bit! The proxy model stands at 130 mm, the full scale doll will be around 44cm.
OK, I must say that I am utterly obsessed with robot/mecha/android/cyborg dolls so I am quite intrigued by your idea of a customizable android doll! Looking forward to your progress!
Ahh thank you! Right now I’ve just been trying to get the base body down. I think it’s be nice for people to have the option between going full robot or having something more chobits like! I’ve been working on her panel lining atm and I can’t wait to update her on here!
Heres a quick update of my androids panel lining! She is now in the 3D printing and joint testing stage, so I'm doing a little bit of research on 3d printing tolerances to make sure my girl's joints move properly! In the meantime, I'm going to be working on a tiny sized doll to pass the time. She will be single jointed and pretty simple so I can use her as test practice for molding and casting. I'm also thinking about doing some simple Zbrush tutorials or posting up some speed sculpting videos for anyone interested in making a doll in ZBrush. Certain things like making a face plate system can be kind of confusing.
Wow, she is looking so good! What an inspiration! I haven't even started learning to 3D model, but I would love to try it in the future, so any tutorials you have time to make would be greatly appreciated.
I loooooove that panel lining so far! I can't wait to see more progress! I must say that I really love the proportions on the doll too!
Oh my god, she's gorgeous ! I love her bottom half, the details are really nice and delicate and her head is a work of art
She is beautiful! And the patterns on her body are such a nice touch? Wouldn't that be harder to print properly though?
For nice detail using an FDM printer it’s based on a couple factors: 1) how big the print is Since she is 44cm tall I’m hoping the printer will capture the detail! 2) how deep/ pronounced the detail is I tried to the cut panel lines a little deeper than they should be, but if it doesn’t print out properly I can always go back and deepen the lines. 3) the layer hieght your printing at and nozzle your using My nozzle size is .4mm (standard size) and I can print down to a layer height of .1 mm if need be, though I do prefer a layer hieght of .15mm for detailed pieces 4) how you orient your print on the print bed ( laying the torso on its back results in less detail than standing it upright) Overall I think I will be okay even if the panel lines are a little shallow, I can always go back and carve them in! I’m very close to getting her ready for printing so hopefully I can Share the results soon and provide some sort of benchmark for how much detail you can achieve on an msd sized doll.
