Tutorial Crafting Your Own Custom Angora Wig ~ ( A Tutorial )

Apr 10, 2013

    1. @hiro_c, that wig is amazing!!!! I love it!

    2. fantasteic,
About 25g locks. However, I used only the tips of the locks. 2/3 cut off.
No I didn't. Sorry, I don't know about it. Because I have not bought arranged locks for doll hair. The fleece for spinning is "kid mohair". I think, younger goat...?
      Anyway, washing is troublesome!! :whee:

      luluna, thank you!

    3. @hiro_c Oh yes, kid locks, I remember seeing them on etsy!
If you've never worked on something like this before it's pretty difficult to figure out how much material you need. I wouldn't want to buy too much, but not enough would be even worse haha.
      So thank you for answering~
I think I'll even go with kid mohair for my first try, they are supposedly super soft >3<
One more question (lmao sorry); did you wash the mohair and brush it out before using it?

    4. I bought couple of Suri alpaca off esty recently in hope to make couple of wigs. I have previously made few wigs out of acrylic yarns using similar technique here. I wonder, can I dye the blond Suri alpaca wig to a different blond I wanted using human hair dye? Should I dye before making wig or after? Sorry if this was asked before... I figured this is a good place to ask.

    5. It should work just fine. I haven't tried it, but I would dye the fibers before making the wig - I'd imagine the glue would stop the dye so the "roots" of the wig would still be a different colour.

    6. definitely dye before hand unless you only want to dye the tips. as jani said the glue would stop the dye from penetrating unless it is a waterbased glue, in which case your whole wig would fall apart when the glue dissolves!

any dye that works for protein based should work. i've even dyed it with hair dye before though the color did seem to fade somewhat after a year or too sitting out.

    7. Thanks guys! The fiber is already naturally blonde but I wanted it to be more "shiny" and golden than bland. I'm going to get the dye today at Wally-world when I go grocery shopping. ^_^

    8. You can also use tea or coffee to blond up light fibres. Make it really strong and steep it in there for about 30 minutes. Tea gives a slight pink tinge, so I tend to use coffee for this. Or do a bath of each, allowing the fibres to dry out between times. I don't know if it is superstition, but I swear allowing it to dry helps the colour stay and makes it more intense when you do a second bath.

    9. Thank you so much! !!!! I've been searching for a comprehensive angora wig tutorial

    10. Thank you very much, I found the answers to my questions, inspired and now I ready for new feats.

    11. I recently did dye job on my fiber and it turned out slightly darker than normal, making it closer to golden brown x_x I need to make it lighter. I am planning to spray some lemon juice and lay it in sunlight (probably under some glass or something to keep it from escaping) and I am hoping that would work.

    12. That should work.

    13. [IMG] This is the wig I'm currently making! I washed my own angora mohair and when this is finished (I have more flocking to do) I will post better pictures! Sorry about the slight dolly nudity.

    16. Ok, I've been slacking and not paying attention to the whole doll thing for awhile; however, I still have a freezer full of hair and found this while searching for Damien Molony in 'When the Hurlyburly's Done'. This is my chosen way of making a part. Funny how ten years ago the web was wanting in tutorials for wig making, now they're everywhere.

    17. Bless this thread. Thank you for the tutorial, @Enki---and thanks to everyone else who has shared their experiences! :daisy

After I practice a few more times using cheaper materials, I'd like to make a teeswater wig for one of my minis. Her hair is supposed to be wild, huge, and difficult to tame, and after reading some of the experiences here (particularly the awesome posts by @MadamMauMau) I'm pretty set on the fiber.

But before I jump into this process, I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience dealing with BlueBarnFiber on etsy? I'm not too comfortable with the idea of buying raw teeswater atm, and she offers custom dyes, etc. Feedback looks good but I was hoping to hear firsthand experiences from someone within the BJD community.

Also, I read here that wool is generally light, so would 1 oz of processed teeswater be enough for a medium-length 7-8" wig? Or should I opt for 2 oz, just in case I fudge up royally?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

      ---Mint

    18. Regarding your question of quantity 1 Oz is more enought for making a 7/8" wig, back in days i did a wig for my Ingenue SA head with teesewater and was the rigth amount of wool, my Ingenue head came from first casting so a very large head, hope this helps :)

    20. I've purchased mongolian locks on the skin from FurMythology (Etsy)... a few pieces purchased, a piece about 4 by 5 made 1 wig size 6-7 with a little leftover. My girl pictured here is my first wig. I tend to use a lot of fiber I think? It certainly is a learning experience!!!

That looks GREAT!!!! You did a marvelous job :)

      looks great!

    21. @PeppermintPocky you're welcome!
You can also comb teesewater but as have beautiful locks i will not consider this as option :)
@purpleauras Sometimes mongolia and mohair are tricky, i'm just doing a very small wig in mongolia fur and i was impressed by quantity of fiber that i must use, guess cause plugs are very very thin so you need to use a lot to cover head area, not sure if make sense :sweat

    22. Oh! That's cool to know! I probably won't use a comb though---if anything, I'd like to try to figure out a way to emphasis the spirals/curls! I ordered an ounce of teeswater and am waiting on the locks to arrive. Once I finish making my first wig, I'll be sure to share a photo here.

Very excited to try this tutorial! :D

    23. Ugh. I started this wig and in hindsight I should have dyed the roots earlier.... but this character is a brunet who has his hair dyed pale mint and his roots show and now I'm wondering what's the best way to dye the roots when it's already glued to his head.

    24. Another bunch of wigs! Little Gawain's wig is made of bamboo (also my first try at bangs), the others are alpaca. All of these came as roving, which was a new experience for me.

    25. Wow a really detailed tutorial. Many thanks, especially for the approximate quantities !!!

    26. O.O I have a couple inquiries for the experienced wig makers here. I've been practicing with some wigs and so far I've made a couple decent ones but I'd like to try more elaborate styles, so that brings me to my first question. When making wigs with plaits/braids...do you braid the hair before you attach it or after? -_- I worry about bare areas showing if I add the hair and then style it.

My next question is...has anyone done hair horns, cat ears or other updos like these? If so, how did you go about doing so?

    27. I bought some Curly Cotswold locks on a spur of the moment whim at a Fiber Festival yesterday and thought I'd give making a wig a try. For a first time I don't think it turned out too horribly. It's not dry yet but I wanted to share a photo anyway.

I wish I'd taken the front down a little bit more, but I've got so much more fiber than I thought I would so I can always try again on someone else.

    28. After many tries and slight successes, I finally made my best hardcap wig yet! I wefted the alpaca first to make it easier to apply. I was even able to make a nice part. Not to mention his head is about 5.25in...so it's even really small...meaning harder.
Here is my Dollshe Arsene fashion size, painted by Wicked Gentleman on fb etc. Wig made by me, starting from this tutorial and learning from there.

    29. omg all these wigs look so amazing :D I need to post some of my completed projects....

I have a guy who wears a braid and I didn't style it beforehand because I wanted to be able to change it. It's really up to you. If you're ok with it being permanent, definitely style it beforehand!

I haven't done any updos yet, but I have a plan to do one with two little buns for my puki puki... when I do, I'll try to document my process and show the results. :)

    30. Excuse the crap lighting, just finished making Emariel’s wig from the Suri Alpaca I got for Christmas. This is my third wig and first with Suri Alpaca. It’s definitely an experience! Just reading about how staticky the fibers are does not do justice to how much it gets stuck to everything! But I’m super proud of how it turned out, although the part is a little weird.

He looks a lot like Sha Gojyo to me.

    31. It really does get stuck to EVERYTHING

I've taken to lightly misting it with leave-in conditioner when I'm working with it to cut down on that lol

The wig looks great :D i love the color of that fiber, wow~

    32. I made a couple wigs over the past month! The first one was with a makeup wipe (clean) and white glue. It took SO long to dry. I also did it with mohair, my first time making the folded part was a nightmare so we'll just not look at that.
Then I ventured onto Soy Silk, which is actually really fun to work with. Had a few fly-aways but I feel like working with the stuff prepared me for Suri, which I now have waiting for me!

Both of those were made with liquid latex, and panty hose and jersey knit (on the girl).
I washed the liquid latex on the boy, it held up alright, but needed a lot of love to fix.

    33. so sad i cant see pictures of tutorial :-) i made some wigs but its to far from yours all works

    34. I bought some raw wool locks that I washed and dyed. I brushed them out and now the curls are like waves and its very fluffy. Is there a way to tighten the curls again? Would wetting it help or would I need a product?

    35. I’m fairly certain that the locks can be re~wetted gently with cool or cold water. Makes sure it’s not warm or the wool may felt!!

    36. Almost an entire year since I've posted last but I made Devlyn another wig out of some poofy yarn I had laying about.

I was sort of going for the Danny Sexbang look. I think he pulls it off.
