Contest Couture Contest: The Witching Hour! Winners Announced!

Jul 31, 2016

    1. I know this is a challenge.. But honestly, the size allotted for a 70cm is really very small when laid out. I have a design in mind and now am finding I have to sacrifice whole parts of the outfit to fit into the rectangle. No matter how you swing it, a 60cm SD isn't the same size as a 70 or 80+cm SD.

I guess it's back to the drawing board, but it is so discouraging when your fabulous original idea doesn't work only BC of size constraint. I'm afraid my guy is going to end up in a mini skirt and a crop top! Lol

    2. I suppose so, not sure if it would really be that much quicker than starting over. Thanks for the advice everyone!

    3. @DraconicMaiden I feel your pain! Even for a chunkier 60 cm doll, like my YID girl, the allotment seems rather small. Oh well.

    4. Ok I have to ask this before I even consider entering because the way the photo rules are worded really seem like someone not familiar with laying pattern pieces out on the grain of the fabric. There is a BIG difference between laying out your pattern pieces to cut on a 24x39" piece of fabric, and cutting them all out and then puzzling them together in a rectangle of that size. It has to do with nesting the pattern pieces to make most efficient use of the fabric while keeping pattern pieces on grain.

So, can you turn pattern pieces off grain to fit within a 24x39" rectangle?? If you can turn them every which way in a rectangle for a photograph you'd essentially be getting away with using more yardage than the limitations stipulate.

    5. This is exactly what I'm talking about too. I just find it really difficult to achieve both the length needed for a 70cm and the room for other pieces. I tried laying out a pants and plain dress shirt pattern and I'm still coming up a bit short. Maybe I'm just going this wrong... Or my outfit is too complicated... but this theme calls for the awesome, doesn't it?

    6. You know, this is a good point. Is it based on the starting fabric or the cut pieces? I only plan on entering for fun so if I can't fit my idea, it's not a biggy to me, but it'd be good to know.

    7. @DraconicMaiden Yeah I'm excited to see what people do for the contest! The prizes don't interest me, so I'd just be entering for fun. But I have enough other things going on that if the fabric constraints are too small I won't put my time into this. I am hoping we can tetris the pieces into a photo for the size, because you'd be able to do your 70cm doll justice!

@BabySnow Same, I just want to enter for fun! But if the fabric restraints are too much it won't be worth my time :/ I was a little shocked at the dimensions we're allowed

    8. If anyone has a question they would like answered by the staff regarding this contest, can you please make a clear request for help or information? If you are another contestant, please refrain from answering questions regarding the contest parameters. It is becoming hard to tell if there are questions that need answering.

There are many ways to work with the fabric size allotment. Be creative!
Being allowed to use any pre-made textile of any kind is not always par for the course for our Anniversary Sewing contests. We have had contests where all you were allowed to use was masking tape! Or you were given a budget of ten dollars for materials! The contest has it's limitations but it is decently unrestricted and far from impossible!

    9. The Mod Team does contain a few people who sew and a few who work in fabric sales, so we are familiar with the concepts. We've run this very same type of contest with these same fabric allotments in the past and the results have been fabulous, so we are sure the entries this year will be just as creative.

No one is obligated to purchase fabric fresh off the bolt, therefore we provide the simple dimensional limitations so that anyone using repurposed materials can measure out their pieces easily. This does mean that if you are clever you can cut your pattern pieces on the grain as one should and arrange them to fit the appropriate dimensions after they are cut.

    10. Magic. ;)

    11. We have had a few questions in Ask the Mods, so I want to clarify:

If you use yardage or materials to make non-essential items to complete your look, like accessories, head gear, shoes, etc. You only need to list those items in your material used. These will not be counted towards your fabric allotment as they are not required for the challenge.

If you use feather trim, you will only count the ribbon they are attached to, and not the length of the feathers.

    12. Waaaait, a hat doesn't count towards yardage at all? I would never have even thought to ask that.

So would say patches count as yardage or as notions?

    13. haha, note I said "head gear" and not hats, so a mask, horns, head ornament of some kind.
A fabric hat will come out of your yardage.

I am sorry if that distinction is confusing. It is a fine line between a wearable and a non-essential accessory used to define your character.

A patch or applique used as a decorative element would be an embellishment and would only be listed in your materials.
If a patch or applique was used in the place of fabric it would come out of your fabric allotment.

We are not considering anything used to make shoes as something coming out of of your allotment. You can use shoes you own, shoes you made, or go barefoot as your character needs to complete their look.

    14. It was stated before that more than one doll can be entered. How about two outfits for the same doll, as separate entries? I'm having difficulties choosing a design/concept, and would probably like to enter two. However, I only have one doll I can use as a 'model' at this point.

    15. I just want to ask, What about 72cm bjds? O.o

My boy is 72/73cm is 10/12 cm a huge difference? I'm sure I can fidle and get things to fit in the parameters. (I work at Joanns)

But I really want to know if there should/could be allotments for 70+ dolls?

    16. You can enter more than one outfit on the same doll, but they do need to be different concepts and not a variation on the same concept. You can only win one of the prizes, so if both costumes placed for prizes, you would be given the higher of the two placements for choosing your one prize.

I would only suggest trying to pull off two if you are certain both will be at the top of you skill level. If one could have been better if you hadn't split your time up attempting two, you may end up with nothing to show for all that extra work.

We are not giving more allotment for anything over 70cm for this contest. This challenge has already begun so it would not be fair to anyone who has already started sewing for a 70cm+ to suddenly change their allotment. We will make adjustments for next years sewing challenge.

I have noticed that a few people who have wondered about this do own 58-65cm dolls. I recommend choosing a smaller muse if there is a concern about not having enough fabric for a big doll.

    17. Oh, and we did get the photos fixed in the past sewing contests, so check out the Decades of Fashion contest and the Myriad of Muslins contest. They both had the same fabric allowances as the current contest. :)

    18. Thank you for the clarification. The allotment actually works out for me, so I'm good to go. Thanks again for being patient and answering. :)

    19. I am happy to announce another prize has been added to Couture Contest on behalf of Pipos Doll!
They have decided to donate a nude Cheshire Pang with face-up!

They have not said which resin color their donation Pang will be, so it may be white or it may be grey.
Whichever color, I am sure we can all agree that a witch is always in need of a good feline familiar!

That means we will have FOUR winners for this contest!
Work hard and go for your prize!

    20. Question: does the total yardage consist of pattern pieces cut and paid laid out, or the full piece of fabric to cut the pieces from?

Also, how do we determine what is "essential" and needs to be counted in the yardage?

    21. *not a mod* but it's been made clear that the yardage is counted with the cut pattern pieces laid out, not the full piece of fabric

    22. I tried to find these threads, but I could only find Decades of Fashion, and the photos still don't seem to be working (/threads/couture-contest-decades-of-fashion-entries-results.639632/). Is there a different place I should go to look at them? Thanks!

    23. You could try /threads/the-winners-circle.640577/

It contains a lot of images from the winning entry's for the different competitions for the 10th anniversary. It may give you an idea of the types of images that are expected. And I checked the images are showing ;)

    24. XD somehow I quoted the wrong response. But thank you lovely mods for clarifying my questions. I'm so excited, and can finally use fabric I bought, just to have it. OuO

I'm so proud of my drafted pattern as well. Even if I don't place, I'll still be proud I made something for my boy.

    25. Thanks, that's just what I wanted to see!

    26. Ok I'm terrible and have one more question (well hopefully) With the yardage allowances, lets take the 1/6 scale measurements for example. The allotment has to be 1/3rd of a yard by up to a meter (wow I feel weird mixing meaurement systems lol). Can we change up the sides so long as it's the same area of space? Like for instance take some of the standardized width allowance (up to 1 meter) and add it to the doll size allowance. Like instead of making a rectangle that's 1/3rd yard by one meter making a rectangle that's 1/3rd yard +1/2 meter by 1/2 meter? The measurements and the floor space stay the same there's just a shape difference? Cause with a 1/6 or a 1/12 scale doll you're working with an incredibly long and narrow shape. Which eliminates some patterns pieces from working, unless you want to cut them up and resew them, which alters the fall of the outfit...
TLDR: using the same amount of floor area but with different dimensions to avoid the "oh god none of my pattern pieces fit in the width but I have tons of extra length here" issue, yay or nay?

    27. Oh lordy I'm mathing and while the method for this question will keep the circumference the same it will in fact change the area a little, and the area is what matters here. So an amendment to my question. Can we use a rectangle or square composed of different measurements so long as the AREA stays beneath that allotted? Or do you want us to stick with your side meaurements cause less math? Lol

      • x 1
    28. Your rectangle of fabric can be any rectangle with the same area as the measurements we request. We can do the math. :3nodding:

      • x 1
    29. Omg thank you so much!!! That opens up some patterning possibilities I was worried I would have to skip over due to their width. Thank you!!!

    30. Okay sorry, I have one more question. Is self adhesive Velcro acceptable?

    31. Yes, you may use Velcro as a fastener.

      • x 1
    32. Dear Mods, can I just say thank you for being awesome and putting together these challenges and fielding all our questions! I haven't started yet, but I'm really excited about this contest!

      • x 1
    33. Thanks for the response - but the important part of the question was, can I use Velcro that is self adhesive, i.e. the Velcro has a sticky backing that does not need to be sewn on. Or must I sew it on anyway?

    34. Usually sticky back velcro does not adhere to fabric very well. But it is an adhesive, and glues are not allowed. Even if it does stick, you will need to sew it down or purchase sew on velcro just for this job.

    35. When I go to the Ask the mods area I keep getting an error message. I have a question on the allowance for head gear but I worry that it's too specific to ask on this thread. Mods, what should I do?

    36. If you had trouble with the link in the contest text, that has been fixed. But you can always access Ask the Mods from the Help tab at the top of the forum.

    37. Thank you, St. James!

    38. I just found this and am scrambling to get something together! Thankfully, my work giving me time off this week a little!

    39. I have a couple of questions about the entry form and what will appear on the page :):

      1. Where should we be including a description of the symbolism behind the choices we made in our outfit? The decades of style contest had a "design concept" paragraph. Is the single sentence description where should we post our design concept, or should we use the materials and methods section? If the former single sentence, that means no ridiculous run-on sentences, right?

      2. WIll the materials and methods section be posted on the voting page? Is there a length limit to this section or any others?

Thanks for another great contest! I cannot wait to see the entries!

    40. Oh No...'symbolism behind the choices !!! I did not see this when reading up on the entry requirements, oops... Looks like I have totally messed this up then. Better go back to the drawing board he he

    41. @HoneyRyder I feel that "I think its pretty/fun" is a totally valid mindset to have behind the choices you made on this design  This is my logic for almost everything I do!

    42. Quick question, chains? Is that part of yardage. Just dangling.

    43. Problem solved, question removed.

    44. Just submitted! I can't wait to see all the entries!! Good luck to everyone still working! :sumomo:

    45. :abow:

    46. You can discuss the concept as well as your methods in the paragraph description. The text will be included in the same way that it it in the Triathlon voting thread.

    47. Is it a part of the construction of the garment, or is it an embellishment?
If it is a part of the garment construction, it must be included with your yardage.
If the chain is an embellishment, than it is included in your materials and not your your yardage.

    48. Awesome! Thanks!

    49. I just submitted my form. yay. but I forgot to add one of the things I used that is kinda simple but don't want to get disqualified for not mentioning it. Is this a problem? Also, I entered all the URLs necessary but couldn't preview them making me uneasy. Are they all in the right places? I.....did this on my phone and its not exactly reliable. Thank you for help any mods can give.
