Coral Reef Discussion Thread- Minis

Dec 7, 2022

    1. I have an Opal with flat feet, but with her mantis backside it's a bit tricky getting her to balance. That said it's doable I'm too much of a worrier to leave her standing for very long though. I feel like the 100% human bodies would stand very easy and hold the poses well. Cuz my little mantis poses wonderfully, it's just her weird bug parts that make things a touch tricky.

    2. Yeah, Opal and Amber/mantis girls are back heavy, and feel less stable compared to the "regular" 1/4 body, in the legs. (The swans use the same type as the mantis body, without the back-piece.)

(@Tippetarius I didn't even think the mantis body could stand, even with flat feet!)

      But sitting they pose wonderfully!
Where as the regular 1/4 body is more plain/basic in posing. Mine is strung well, so she holds poses very well though.

    3. I missed Mirana's pre-order last year and now I saw her full set in stock at DDE but she is already sold out as well. :( Does Coral Reef have any other official dealers besides DDE?
I am so sad, I just discovered Coral Reef last year and Mirana's full set is just so gorgeous. :pout:

    4. They may have had a set available if someone didn’t finish a layaway. You can always send an email to the dealers Yumeiro mentioned and ask if somehow they have another available! Good luck!

    5. Thank you so much for your comments, everyone!

    6. God, I really want them to release a 1/3 doll that looks similar to Caroline. I looooove that body they posted photos for, but I have so much on layaway that it's best for me if they don't release a 1/3 girl anytime soon :mwahaha but, RIP me if they do :thumbup

    7. I got a very special Christmas gift!! Mirana the White Queen! She is so incredibly beautiful, I'm in love. <3

    8. So since the mantis girls are being rereleased - are you guys safe?
I already have one, but if there is a chance of getting the old Opal fullset... :shudder

      • x 1
    9. ... I'd be doomed, lol. Opal is one of my favorite sculpts, but would she be as charming without the old fullset? Sadly there aren't many owner pictures and the new fullsets don't quite suit my taste.
If you would go for Opal anyway, what skin color would you choose?

    10. Wait, they changed the fullset? Did they change it for the rest of them too or is it just this one in this case?

    11. @moonlightnocturne Opal and Amber are being rereleased in new styles. But old Opal will be available too.

Yeah. The new styles does nothing for me either.
I'm only after the wig, outfit, and shoes, for Opal, so the skincolor doesn't really matter in my case.

    12. If they offer the blue resin, very doomed. Especially with the mini mantis dolls being available to purchase with them

    13. Is anyone else thinking of getting one of the pets? They're so weird and cute!

      • x 1
    14. I was thinking about it. But decided against it.
I had SO hoped they'd manage to make them into the chibi-styled version mantis girls form their concept art:[IMG]

    15. I have a coraline and ordered a Swan with wings and all the beautiful hands and foot. I am really excited for her. What surprised me about coraline, is that she came with high heel foot as default and no flat feet. Of course it was in description, and i am usually good at noticing those things, but this time it got me by surprise luckily Coraline and Swan can share feet, so she will finally get some more options. I still struggle to style coraline though

    16. I am waiting on a Black Swan. Does anyone know how long is the rough average wait for Coral Reef?

Also, clothes! I would love to know things/companies you have found that work well for these ladies! :D

    17. If you order directly, it takes about 6 months. That was my wait both times I’ve ordered.

    18. Do not order from Dollection, they are not sending items that were ordered from them. Also I am nervous as I see a lot of photos from coralreef but very few actual dolls in hand. I am seeing the older dolls for sale from reputable sellers (Denver, Alice's collection, etc.,) so I am just nervous as I have to date not received my butterfly from dollection. :/ and on Instagram the "manager" is claiming an injury that keeps her from answering emails!

    19. Oh, I'm so sorry to read that. I hope your dolly shows up soon. I've only ordered an in stock Coral Reef doll from Denver Doll. I can only imagine how stressful waiting for a preorder from a flightly seller would be. Big hugs!

    20. Could some kind soul share the circumference of the wrist and ankle joints on their 1/4 human girl body? I've fallen in love with the option hands/feet and would love to hybrid them on a different body if I can. I looked around but haven't been able to find this info listed anywhere.

    21. @QuietYurei

      Wrist joint: 3-3,1cm
      Mantis body: Same

      Ankle joint: 4,5cm
      Mantis body: 4-4,2cm

I think those you linked to are for the mantis/jiuermao body specifically. So take note of that for the feet.

    22. I think Peach and Caroline are beautiful! I really wish Caroline had the version with regular ears, it would be so cool too!
      Does anyone here have Peach?

    23. I just ordered a Caroline Friday. I'd been looking for a doll with more outward oriented ears and she was just perfect. She's going to be Sylphiette from Mushoku Tensei. Its been years since I've ordered an MSD, so I'm pretty stoked.

Super happy I read some forum posts on here though and went with Alice Collection rather than BJDdivas. AC allowed me to choose the wider shoulders so I had to go with them.

    24. Thank you so much! The measurements aren't perfect for a hybrid I want, but they're close enough I think I will risk it. They are sculpted so beautifully.

    25. Something I did not understand: are the hands for 1/4 Jiu Er Mao (is there even a 1/4 Jiu Er Mao body? I only see 1/3) compatible with the hands for 1/4 Whale Island? I see that they have distinct resin palettes, so they're two different companies under the same umbrella?

    26. @lutke More like branches (or sculptors/designers).
There are two 1/4 body types. Jiuermao is the mantis, and Whale Island is Caroline, for example.

If you check the measurements I posted above, they should fit...

    27. Thanks @Yumeiro! I thought the mantis girls were 1/3 since the only bodies on sale were the 1/4 Whale Island and 1/3 Jiu Er Mao.

    28. The mantis girls are 1/4th, at least mine is, I do not know if they also have a bigger version of them.

    29. The mantis girls are 1/4, but there was the Unicorn Beetle girl that came out a few months ago and was 1/3: end of order June 28, 2024. Very limited amount, 50 = 30 full set + 20 nude dolls.

    30. That was definitely my oversight about scale.
I think only the beetle version is limited, while the human doll is not (but I might be wrong on that?)
What puzzles me is that the Jiu Er Mao parts have a different selection of resins than Whale Island, according to the Coral Reef site, so even if the sizing is similar I am not sure. I like to order every possible extra and I was tempted to get the additional Jiu Er Mao 1/4 parts for my Whale Island order. I don't understand either if Whale Island 1/4 flat feet are the Jiu Er Mao flat feet, because there's no listing for feet parts on Whale Island. Does someone have a comparison?

    31. Whale island and Jiuermao/mantis body flat feet are not the same. The manis feet are smaller.
Again, two different types of dolls. They happen to share the same measurements for the wrists though.
(Whale island has flat feet and heeled feet option only, currently)

Let me give you an example for Caroline/whale island and mantis, and official measurements:

      Hope this helps.

    32. @Yumeiro thanks a lot, the pictures are very informative. So even if the measurements are similar, the sculpts are substantially different and the Mantis body is much spindlier than Whale Island. I assume the hands are much slimmer too. Good thing I didn't get those parts :sweat it's a pity because I like the hand poses for the Jiu Er Mao a bit more.

    33. @lutke The default hands are the same.
But I do not know about the new/extra Jiuermao hands, if they are smaller, or daintier, or not. I like them too - they've got some nice pronounced nails! I've been thinking about getting them at some point...

      • x 1
    34. Hmm I don't think so. The pose is similar but not the same, and those on the Mantis body aren't mirrored like on Whale Island.

    35. I do not know what you are referencing, but I have both and they are the same..?

    36. Oh I must be mistaken then, nevermind.

    37. Ooh! I finally got my shipping notice on my black swan! One week shy of 8 months, dang. Can't wait to see her, she will be my first Coral Reef doll.

    38. They have a 1/5 body and l was wondering what other company's color would match this body?

    39. My Black Swan just arrived today. She is my first Coral Reef bjd and...just wow. I am kind of blown away right now. She is so much fun to pose, so expressive! The 8 months was the longest wait I have had thus far for a doll, but I do not regret it in the least!

I can't seem to get to my Flickr at the moment, but I posted a quick and dirty photo of her on my Instagram here:

    40. My Amber arrived today. Some notes:
Coral reef wrapped the ears and limbs up much better than what I've seen of the first Amber release. Good bc I was a little worried her ears would come chipped!
Coral reef white is a very close match to Dream Valley wall white. It's definitely more of a paper white than than the warm white DV or Dollzone use. Not sure about Doll Chateau.
      Very smooth resin feel
BEAUTIFUL box cover that I want to use as a print!!
      ~6mo wait? Which I expected.

May everyone else who bought a mantis girl have them arrive safe and sound!!

      • x 3
    41. I think in order to match DV/DZ/Doll Chateau's creamy white the option would be "Mia White" or at least I really hope so 'cause I'm doing a hybrid :sweat

    42. My Caroline arrived today. I ordered her on June 1st so just shy of three months. I was really surprised when I got the email from Alice Collections saying she shipped. Then even more so how soon she got here from Alice.

This is my first Coral Reef doll and I gotta say she's pretty nice. Like her resin feels really nice...idk why but soft was the first adjective that came to mind if that makes sense. And very well packaged. Those ears made me nervous. I'm keeping the little wraps they used so I can use them for when I send her off for a faceup.

Did anyone else notice their dolls shoulders being hot glue sueded? Definitely surprised me. She's strung nice and tight like I like my dolls to be. And talk about a clean line between the head cap and the head. It almost disappears. They are definitely impressing me. God help me if they ever start making more 1/3 size girls.

    43. @blueboy57 congrats on your Caroline! I hope I'll get mine that quickly as well :love
I'm glad to hear about the packaging... as for the sueding/washers, it seems like more and more companies are doing it as a default. I imagine the leg to hip connections have that as well?

    44. Oddly enough it was just the shoulders. I checked all the other joints but nothing. Not that they need it anyway. The resin has the right amount of tooth to hold it's own.

    45. Hey, could anyone point me in the right direction of clothes that fit these ladies? I'd super appreciate it!

    46. @LiselT This nice video reviewing the Whale Island body shows that it fits Minifee clothes that are not tight on the hips (read: no pants).

    47. @lutke: Thank you! I have been trying minifee clothes (I have a full crew of them), but my trouble is more that the dresses I have are not tight enough on the bust! I'm not having a ton of luck searching for something that looks like it might work better yet. :sigh

Edit: it also looks like the proportions of the Black Swan girl I have don't match with the body in the video, either. Hmm...

    48. @LiselT The Swans use the "mantis body". The Swans are just slightly larger and taller in some areas (like shoulders) than the mantis.

    49. @Yumeiro I noticed that when I went digging through Coral Reef's body types on their website. Thank you!

I think I may have to just be patient and wait to see if something comes up or any seamstress is available to be commissioned to make the sort of dress I'm hoping to find for my girl. I have a concept idea for her, but it's more fantasy-ish than modern, so I haven't had much luck. More time to enjoy her lovely sculpting and posing!

Man, I wish I could sew!

    50. @LiselT if you are willing to use a proxy, I think they sell a dressform for the Mantis body (or at least it looks like it) on their Taobao. Dressforms make sewing a lot easier!

    51. Back with another question. My girl is en route for a faceup so I can't fuss with what I have atm, can you guys please show me pics of your Coral Reef dolls and tell me what eye size you are using? I want to see if I can get eyes in for her before she gets back, buy either I am blind (possible :sweat ) or the listings just don't mention anything about eye size...

    52. @LiselT Alice's Collections states 16mm for Caroline and 14mm for White/Red Queen. Mantis is also 14mm. I'm on mobile but if you go to their site there is more info in the images.

    53. I didn't know they were a dealer too, thank you! I checked DDE, Coral Reef's own page, Legend Doll and BJDivas but couldn't find it.

      Now the hunt begins! :D

    54. Well, I see this as an excuse to take pictures of mine:
      Caroline: 14mm
      Mantis (Amber): 12mm and 8mm
      Iracebeth: 14mm

      • x 6
    55. @Yumeiro Gorgeous dolls! Now I'm definitely dying to receive my own Caroline, she's adorable :love it's good to know that 14mm eyes fit her just fine.

    56. @Yumeiro Ooh you have several! I'm a drooling a little, they're gorgeous! Thank you for showing them!

    57. My newest favorite resin brand! I have a deep purple (I forgot the official colour name, apologies) Amber on the way. I got her with extra human hands and the additional body spikes. She's going to become a Drow priestess blessed by Lolth.

I really wish I could have afforded Rabbit Woo but it wasn't in the cards. I'm really hoping she gets a rerelease in the future.
