    1. I love character dolls and do, in fact, currently have one--my DD Aeka, a character from the Visual Novel Yume Miru Kusuri. I'm also currently planning another character doll--Cyborg 004, Albert Heinrich, from Cyborg 009. When I still had Max's old Obitsu shell just sitting around doing nothing for a couple of months I dressed it up like him and found out that having him around was super fun, so I decided "why not" and now he's firmly planted next in line. (Not as an Obitsu, though, too much stain risk.)

      A lot of people seem to not want character dolls since it'd make having the doll really restrictive in terms of dress and character, but I don't mind any character deviations that occur very much. (Besides, in terms of clothes, nobody wears the same thing all the time.) Aeka's character now thinks she's a Saint and wants her own "gat" and purple "street gear" so she can go jump out of a helicopter and claim her own penthouse crib, but the heart's still there. XD Besides there's no figure of Aeka and I don't want to pay $200 for 004's RAH figure because I don't like his redesign so...>>;

    2. I want so many characters from series and movies! Especially Snape XD

    3. I've always wanted a Snape! :} I love Snape.

    4. Not yet ! Maybe in the near future when I have saved up money *_* and maybe if there is a zorro (one piece) doll out there !

    5. I want to depict the characters from author Elizabeth Boyle's books from 'The Bachelor Chronicals' I will have to start with the various gents costumes since I will only have one doll for a while LOL Eventually some different heads to fit the charactes details (facial looks... as at least one has a scar). If I can find the right collection of body types I may try to do them separately. A couple are refered to a short (for these men that means 5'10" - 6', she has a thing for men 6'4" i think lol).

I have actually mentioned this idea to Elizabeth and she looks forward to seeing her characters as doll ^^... anyone ever done a doll of someones character and showed it to the original creator?

    6. My bestie has a Luts Kid Delf Bory that I made up as Zoro. She needs to get his swords, and I haven't done his earrings, but he looks awesome if I do say so myself. :D

Way back when I first voted on this thread, I said I had serious plans for one - and now I'm on my way to four! Not counting the OT 1/6 obitsu dolls, of which there are many.

I eventually got my Dream of Doll Tender Yen to be Himura Kenshin. He was later followed by my Luts Kid Delf Ani to be - of course - Monkey D. Luffy. And Nikki and I couldn't let him be lonely, so Zoro followed after. And now I think I've settled on a Luts Super Senior Delf Landy to be Clark Kent.

Here's to stopping with the many costly character dolls after that!

    7. I've decided that if I am still interested in this idea once I get dolls for all my OCs (four technically five but I'm willing to wait on the fifth since her ideal doll shell is a Soom Vesuvia in bronze resin, which was only offered as a special order and would require me to find someone who a, got a bronze skin Vesuvia and b, is willing to sell it) I'm going to save up for and buy a doll to make into a Homestuck character. And then have photoshoots with all the characters that go together, and the one character that just does not belong.

    8. Heeheeheeheehee. Come to the dark side. We have cookies.

    9. This depends on what your definition of "the dark side" entails....

    10. The little cadre of us that own Homestuck dolls. I'm a horrible enabler. XD

    11. Ah, I see  well, who knows, maybe in a year or two I will also have one.

    12. I don't have character dolls, nor do I have plans for any. However, I think doll cosplay would be neat, and I like looking at other people's character dolls! :)

    13. At least half my guys are character dolls. I get really attached and invested in certain canon characters more than I do with OCs, and thus I want to make them (that and a lot of the characters I like are obscure and hardly have any merchandise anyway).

Granted some do start taking on their own traits, and at least one is a very AU version of the character he's supposed to be.

    14. I wanted a certain anime character in BJD form even before I knew much about BJDs. I watch a lot of anime but only own one series, and he's the lead. I have him and his partner in crime/ girlfriend planned. They are both characters from Darker Than Black. I also plan to create Hagi from Blood+ to be eternal guardian of a embodiment of a childhood friend I lost. Those three will be my only look-alike characters. I also have a couple 'inspired by' ones planned. I intend to let them evolve beyond their origins in terms of relationships and personality. I have no interest in making the characters from my novels into BJDs, adapting anime characters will be a lot more fun.

    15. I thot about this after my original post... while it still stands that I want to do up dolls as existing book characters my Marauder kinda comes with a vague character sketch... I plan on trying to develope it more fully (maybe make up his lady love that the company blurb aludes to.). Though and actual name seems beyond my imagination ><...

    16. Agreed, a Snape doll would be awesome!

I've never really considered owning a character doll myself, I guess I like my dolls to be more individual or something. I love to look at character dolls that people have made though.

    17. I'm not usually into Character dolls, until I saw Burrysa from boy and girl doll and I knew right off the bat I wanted to make Ultimecia from Final Fantasy VIII. I don't mind other people having dolls based off main characters I think it's pretty interesting so there's no limit personally

    18. So apparently, way back when I voted on the poll here (without commenting), I said "No, and I have no plans or desire to."

That apparently didn't work out so well for me. :sweat The vast majority of my dolls are still my Original Characters, exactly what I'd planned for when I first joined the hobby, but I now have three that aren't shelling any particular character, one who is a fandom character doll, and another one on the way (with plans for more in all three groups). And I definitely wouldn't call any one group easier or harder to work on, they've all had their challenges as I've owned and worked toward completing them.

But in contrast to what I originally answered? I've now got plans for plenty. Which I guess goes to show that we never quite know how the future will change our plans!

    19. I'm obsessed with making a Link and a Zelda doll. Problem is, the sculpts I was thinking of make Zelda quite a bit bigger than Link, haha.

    20. I'm working on a character doll. I'm doing Szayel Aporro Granz Espada number 8. I love him so much.

    21. I have quite the obsession with buying and making Dollfie Dream character dolls in particular! I currently own Rise Kujikawa and am working on customs of the Higurashi girls, Misuzu Kamio, Lucy/Nyuu, and others.

    22. Hmm...I've said before in this thread that I have character dolls and they tend to stay on track, but there's been a recent development--one of them is developing completely away from the character I meant for him to be! This, of course, is fine with me.

I still love character dolls, but I suppose when you make one you ought to keep an open mind and consider that the character might not stick.

    23. I need to see this so badly! xD

I don't really make character dolls HOWEVER I'm planning on several full cosplays for several of my dolls -wigs and everything included- that include Judal from Magi the Labyrinth of Magic, Link from Legend of Zelda, Chirno and Satori Komeiji from the Touhou Project and several others~ c: those aren't really going to be permanent or anything but they fit the dolls they're intended for in character so I'm very happy about that~

    24. Not too interesting but a Mad Hatter, Red Queen, Alice and a Cheshire ... oh, and a white rabbit as well. Well they are my interpretation of them anyway.

    25. I so want Altaïr and Malik and Ezio and Rivaille andandand--- Well yeah. I totally want at least one BJD that looks exactly like one of my favorite character from a game or anime! Think of all the fanart you can make! *cough*
But seriously, if I ever decide to get that Altaïr or Rivaille BJD, I'm going to make it myself~
Sidenote: My doll, Eden is very losely based on Daenerys from Game of Thrones, but I do realize she doesn't look anything like her at the moment, but I totaly had her in mind when modding Eden's face and designing her style. (No pic, because I haven't gotten down to make her clothing yet [exept one leather dress] o///o)

    26. I actually own one right now :) He bases on Harry Potter series but combine with my imagination and other stuffs I found online.
You can see him in my signature below. He's my 16-year-old version of Severus Snape!
And I plan to have Sirius, James and Remus as well. But really not this soon I'm still broke!

    27. I voted No and I have no plans to but my BF keeps saying I should make a couple dolls after characters from League of Legends. I've already got some of it planned out but it's just a matter of getting that sort of extra money set aside all at once. So it may never happen :)

    28. I plan on buying Nero of Fate/Extra from Volks but I really want Arthuria so I'll customize her to become Arthuria. XD

    29. Ah! I agree with this! I have been planning out doll cosplays, but I wouldn't want to make it permanent as I have so many different plans. More than anything, it'll just be my OCs cosplaying or having a spare doll to make little outfits with to correspond with me.

    30. I agree with the cosplaying idea as well! I don't think I would like to have a doll that's meant to be a specific character from a show or something all the time. It just feels less creative to me, but that isn't to say that I don't think it's cool when other people do it! It's just not for me :)

    31. So I've been wondering about this a lot lately. How do you...deal (I guess? Not really the right word, but oh well) with the dolls who are based off characters not your own?

I generally style my dolls off of my own characters that I created.....I have a lot of them so I don't need to borrow others. Lately I have one doll who's been hanging around as one of the X-men (which has always been my favorite thing evar), I don't do anything with him, but he looks good (what else matters??) and he's kind of an extra doll (don't ask) that I remade into my own character then changed to this one for a while because I could. In my head I keep thinking I'll change him back to Raziel (my character) someday, but it hasn't happened, and now I have an incoming doll that I thought I might make into another X-men character....It'll be different than the original, because said doll happens to be the wrong gender and I'm not going to change that XD and I ended up with this whole backstory idea I came up with while at work today and now I'm kind of excited about it....

But I'm afraid I'll get the doll, put all this work into creating this not-really-original character and then get bored with it and not like it after awhile. Because that's how I roll apparently. I've tried the Character Doll thing many times since getting into BJDs, and generally the same thing happens. I finish the doll, and then don't want it anymore. I almost had it with an AU version of a Rug Rats character, but I sold him pretty quickly when I decided to shrink the group a tad.

I'm really interested to know what other people do with theirs. Are they carbon copies of the originals?? Kinda twisted? Fan ficcy stuff?? Do they interact with your own characters?
I need inspiration lol so I don't repeat my usual pattern. The first doll is safe, he can go back to Raziel any time (though I'm going to amend his faceup to reflect his "new" self....), it's the second doll, which I really want, that needs preemptive help - I'm out of characters of my own that I want to doll. He won't stick around if this one doesn't work out....

All opinions will be verily appreciated :)
      Thanks!

    32. Currently I've got 2 Character dolls and several more planned, but the majority of my collection is just based off of how an individual doll speaks to me. With a mixture of both, I was worried too that I'd do the same thing - put all this time and money into a character and then be bored with it. Luckily, I managed to avoid that pitfall.

The way I've found that I approach character dolls is applying some of my own interpretations to them and having a sense of humor to keep them from getting boring. All my dolls know they're dolls, even my 2 current characters. While they still retain their "base personality" - Loki is still an obnoxious jerk and Thor is still stubborn and kind of arrogant - they also get my interpretation of themselves which allows me to make them "mine" in a sense, which is what lets me bond with them and enjoy them a lot more then if I forced them into little boxes of complete accuracy. They haven't really interacted with many of my other dolls, but I foresee it on the horizon.

Not to be too much of a nerd (well, more then I've advertised now...), I told a friend of mine something similar when we were discussing the mistreatment of a game series we both really like and cosplay from:
no matter what the creators do or say, once you release something to the public, release characters to the public, they're going to take them and make them their own. Everyone has their own interpretation of a character, and no matter what anyone says or does, that can't be taken away. Our idea of the character, all the missing stuff we've filled in for ourselves like how they think or what they've done, is what allows us to relate to them and make them ours.

... I really hope they didn't come off too highfalut'n XD

    33. This is pretty much how I approach the issue of character dolls. [break]I'm not into fiction-writing, and coming up with OCs just holds no interest for me. My doll is a character doll--- or at least, she's MY version of one of my favorite fictional characters. The sculpt reminded me of the character, not just for a facial resemblance but the general mood/feeling about her. So I modeled her face-up, coloring, hair, style and etc. after the character, (but gave her a different name--- I didn't care for the real character's name) and she's my interpretation of her--- but I don't try to have her inhabit the world the character comes from, because my doll-version of the character is a doll and knows she's a doll. (if that makes any sense! it's kind of hard to explain this stuff.) Just about all the dolls I have planned will be the same way, including the one I have on the way. I guess that's just how I prefer to do things.[/break]

    34. At least two of my dolls will be shelled so that I can make them cosplay as different characters, swapping out heads and outfits, although for the most part I will keep dolls of my OCs.

    35. The above is largely how I'm approaching my own character dolls. One of them I'd already had for some time, and had planned to just do him as a copy of the character, much like VampireAngel13 was describing, which meant for a long time nothing really happened with him. After I played him in an RP, however, I decided to turn the sculpt into that RP version of him, and in turn, bring home some of the other characters around him. Both adding that element to him, and adding more dolls to the set, gave me the interest I needed, and work has started again!

The key for me was when I made the character more personal, not just that copy. I've got other figures of the character that can serve that purpose, in this case I want something different, and that's what I'm getting through my work on him.

    36. I'm planning a character doll in the future, might or might not create her tho,
but I just thought Ai Enma from 'Hell Girl', would be amazingly creepy,
and while I don't have my first doll yet (which is going to be based offa a OC) I think they'd make great friends.

    37. I love Akira Toriyama's series "Dr. Slump" and I ordered a Littlefee Madeleine to be the little robot girl, Arale. I bought a custom outfit from Etsy, have the glasses and purple wig, and all that other good stuff, and now I'm just waiting for her to come home. She'll need some mods and a special faceup, of course, but I think it's kind of neat to see people's take on popular characters and how close they can get with it.

    38. At first I say no but... the more I think, more I'm tempted. Probably one of my favorite character of always, like Pride from fullmetal alchemist (the manga, not the first anime) or Yuko from xxxHolic. And I agree with vicemage when she says "made the character more personal, not just that copy." I think it will be really fun <:

    39. I wouldn't quite base a doll on the actual character, but I would take some ideas and make a new character. Lets say , a ninja type character based on Naruto etc

    40. A couple of my dolls were bought with the intention of making them character dolls, but I found that I just didn't bond with them the same way I did with dolls whose characters I created. So all of my dolls now are my original characters.

    41. I've got one but it's very second plan character who wasn't really developed in canon and I added a big amount of information myself (some of it even doesn't match canon, but I don't feel like I care, even though it's probably bad xDD ) but I still voted because he still isn't completely mine as there vere a couple of thoughts.
I think I will get about 3 character dolls in the future, also the second plan ones.

    42. I plan my dolls based either off the stories I write or sketches I draw.

    43. I personally would never base a doll off another character, but I do see some and a lot of them are really cute. c:

    44. I always liked the idea of taking a few characters and putting them together into one character and letting them sort of play out their own story, if that counts. I want a Pierrot doll from the old Italian theatre <3

    45. I answered a Yes, because at least part of my dolls charactes, and especially the names, are of preexisting chracters. But they have my own twist of events, or simply own characterisation. Like an fanfiction author writing extreem OCs.
I have a Lucius Sevarion M. ---- as in Lucius Malfoy with a major OCness (not canon, no where canon, but blond, grey-bleu eyes and royaly screwed character and diva complex)
A Severus T. Snape, for whome I keep Rowlings ideas and add my own thought to it. (Eileen Snape is such an underdeveloped character in the books...I just gave her some more (?) motherly love????)
Loki started out as a nors god incarnation and got to be the Marvel movie cursed by Odin because of extreen pranks Loki, with matching wardrobe project......and shifting character.
Jean...historical characters counting in right? So yeah, Jean Armand du Plessis de Richelieu was once the first minister of France and is now sitting dollyfied in my home. Ah pardon, Armand Jean, he had to switch his first names for cover.... -.-' And no, not inspired by Dumas.
      See it as historical fiction....
For the heavens, even Louis, my rolling head, has a names giver. He is to obsessed with sweets to have any other similaryties to said giver, besides physical existance.

So yes and no, I have charactre based dolls, with my very own twist. Playing by others rules is not my thing at all, geting massive inspiration is^^.

    46. I don't currently, but I've wanted to have a Kakashi Hatake character doll for a while :fangirl:

    47. I've been really wanting the Levi doll from IOS but I know I can never afford one.

    48. I have the intention of taking my MNF Mirwen sleeping head & have her eyes moded open. That sculpt reminds me of Natalie Portman & that is how I want her to look. Then I want to make her costumes from the Star Wars movies, different favorite animes & some original design cosplay :D

My best Dolly buddy has got me started on the Dark Hunter book series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. There are a few characters I'd like my current dolls to cosplay.

She on the other hand has a cute demon "Simi" doll, and a "Nick Gautier" doll on layaway!

I'd also like a few of my current dolls to dress as Kuyzo from Samurai 7 anime & KaKashi (spelling Sorry!) from Naruto :p

Sent from my cell phone using Tapatalk!

    49. I do not have a character doll yet, but I intend to have one at some point as I delve more into this hobby.

    50. I have to admit that "character dolls" are some of my favourite in this hobby to look at, because different artists choose different sculpts for the same characters and they all manage to make incredible looking tributes to their source inspiration! It doesn't matter, book, movie, anime, cartoon, comic...I've seen amazing tributes galore! :)

    51. The only character doll I wanted was the volks Jack Skellingtom one, which made me want to cry and curl up into a ball after looking at the price... x:

I plan to have a character doll, but not permanently. Maybe to have that doll just "cosplay" as the character. I still would have that doll have his/her own personality or style, but just occasionally dress up. I got into this hobby because of the customization, knowing that my doll may be the only doll that looks like that in the world. Though I find that the process of making a doll fit a certain character is interesting.

    52. I'm really excited about the boy I'm saving for-- he will be a character doll, but because his character doesn't have very much physical description (as a narrator who never looks at himself and who is talking to people who know him anyway, he doesn't ever need to describe himself!), the way I plan on styling him is very different from most visual interpretations, so I think a lot of people will probably not look at him and recognize him as that character even if they're familiar with the fandom.

It kind of tickles me to have 'stealth' character dolls-- I don't see any reason to hide that they are, I just think it's kind of amusing when they slip under the radar.

    53. Lemme guess -- Cecil Palmer? ;)

    54. Haha, yes. I feel such a connection to that character... (and between all the time spent on fanfiction and fandom RPing, well... it's come to not seem weird to me to spend a lot of money turning him into a doll)

    55. I'm currently (very very very slowly) working on making a cosplay of Madoka Kaname from Madoka Magica for my kdf... I dunno if that really counts as a true character doll, since she'll still be the character I came up with for her, but I'll consider her like... half a character doll! Since she'll probably end up wearing the costume a whole lot if it turns out well. Her faceup and body are suitable for the character and I had a wig that could be easily made into Madoka's hairstyle so I figured I'd try making the costume.

And my holy grail is a Volks Suigintou... If I can't get my hands on her then I might just set out on making my own Suigintou doll ^ ^; She's my favorite character from one of my favorite anime so I'd really like to have her in resin form.

    56. Someday I'd like an MSD Rue and Ahiru from Princess Tutu, and possibly a Tim Drake/(Red) Robin.

    57. I don't have any concrete plans yet but I think it would be really cool to have a doll of Sabriel or Lirael from the Abhorsen series. It would be so cool to have a tiny bell bandolier for the Sabriel doll. But the costumes and accessories might be kind of hard to put together. I also think it would be cool to have a doll of either Utena or Anthy from the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime series. I actually already have a doll in mind that could make a really good young Anthy. If I run out of my own characters to make dolls out of (which at this rate may never happen  ) I might try one of these.

    58. There are two characters I desperately want to create- they are Morpheus from the Splintered trilogy and Poppet from the Night Circus book :) But it seems my own original characters usually get preference over them.

    59. I'm in the process of making a DD Lacus~ I really love the idea of making character dolls, and definitely plan on making more down the road :dance

    60. I am in the beginning stages of planning a doll to be Beelzemon from Digimon. I'm still not quite sure if I want to do a loose interpretation and have him look more human, or if I should try to get as close as possible to the show. I've also thought it would be really neat to have a doll like N from Pokémon :) Maybe someday!
