    1. I was wondering how many people actually own a character doll. Not original characters, but characters based off someone else's book, manga, movie, game, etc., like Harry Potter or Pirates of the Caribbean. I see that it isn't done too often at all, and I am aware the reasons, yes: originality is the bottom line of this hobby, I know. Still, I see it as a cute, harmless tribute, and it seems like it'd be really fun to do.

So! The poll! Do you own a doll based off a character other than your own? It'd be cool if owners would post which character, too :) Or, do you have serious plans to do it: "serious" as in you would/will should finances provide the opportunity.

If this has been covered, of course, mods can delete it.

    2. I have plans to someday make an Aoi Karin doll if funds and my fiancé permit it that and I have to find the perfect wig *_*

    3. I wouldn't want a doll that was *permanently* a certain character, as this would limit what I could do with that doll costume and personality-wise, but I like making doll cosplay.

    4. Well, I do have a doll modeled after Mana of Malice Mizer/MDM and others for many non-original character but they're not a bjds... so someday I plan to do a few BJD-ified... specifically Mana :3. But when I choose dolls I like I kind of already decide what pre-existing character they might look good as, so someday I can make up that costume... so my doll can.. cosplay xD? As another character ^^.

    5. I do have future plans to own a doll based off of a younger version of Mary Carson from the mini series the Thorn Birds, though at the moment I'm having a hard time finding the perfect mold for her. :sweat She will most likely be my only character doll, as I like to invent my own original characters. ^^

    6. I have a Miyavi Doll if rock stars count... ^^;

    7. I'm currently working on a doll based on Yoshitaka Amano's designs for the little girl in Mamoru Oshii's Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg).

    8. No, i have to many my orginal characters and too many new ideas :P...

    9. One of my future dolls will be very heavily based (or let's just say he will be this character) on the character, Nishizono Tetora from the manga, MPD Psycho. I might also have another doll, based on the character, Wanijima Akito/Agito from Air Gear, though I'm not too sure. :/

    10. I plan on getting an AR Cien and modding his eyes just a bit...he'll be Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho ^_^

    11. I would adore having a chiyo-chan from azumanga daioh doll. :)

    12. My unoa looks like Bettie Page (love BP!) , so I guess she is a character. ~~Lin

    13. My Mini Fee is based on a character from the manga/anime Prince of Tennis. :) But though I've used the name and general personality, she is not supposed to be that exact character -- she's more like a very "alternate universe" version of him. ^_~

    14. My Nightengale is based on a fairly obscure character from Harukanaru Toki no Naka de... a creature called Nue. Tien Jen also has quite a lot of D from Petshop of Horrors in him. :)

    15. Riku is Riku! *points to sig* Hopefully next year I will have Sora as well and, although I dislike Kairi, I am working on a Kairi cosplay for Dee!

    16. I own two character dolls, they are supposed to be the character they are based on at all times. My YoSD Piccolo is Uchiha Itachi from Naruto who just happens to be stuck in a little chibi body, and I am working on making him a matching Kisame since I rather hate breaking up my OTPs. My Tohya is Oshitari Yuushi of Prince of Tennis fame.

I don't find the fact that they are not based on my characters limiting in the least, after all, your own original characters have parameters that you set and follow as well. It's no different. I view my dolls as three dimensional fanart and even if one is not in his Akatsuki uniform at all times or the other in his tennis gear, he's still the character. They are just as versatile as any doll based on someone's original character.

As for originality, just as much work is put into designing and creating a character doll as any other doll, so I fail to see why there would be a creative stigma attached to it. Unless, of course, there are elitist issues that arise that are along the same lines as original fiction vs. fanfiction, which is a whole other debate.

    17. My plans are to own an Edward Elric in the near future. ^^; He's gonna be a MNF Shiwoo, but he's going to be a lot of work. Lots of modding is going to take place. xD

I think, that when you're adding something more to what someone else has created, you love it just as much as something that is original. So I don't view it as any different.

    18. My Yukinojo is based on a Historical noble who lived during the Renaissance. Does this count?

Yay! Kasviel says he counts so here's a quick pic!

    19. Quatre is based off of Gundam Wings Quarte Raberba Winner
but kinda not really he's his own >>
Lets just say if GW Quatre had a evil (ok not really just a really just misbehaved) twin brother with the same name as him
      *looks around and runs off*

    20. i'd like to get a certain doll to make into a little duck-esque girl ala "princess tutu"...of course, she wouldn't stay "duck" all the time, but i'd give her those big blue eyes and bright orange hair as her 'default" style :)

    21. Eventually I plan to have a Suu from Clover,Kobato from the manga Kobato, a more humanoid version of Chii(probably using a DoT Shall),Fai from Tsubasa Chronicles and a whole host of others mostly Clamp and characters from the Hyung Tae Kim designed video games.

    22. I'm saving up for a Shiwoo who I'm going to make into Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, but more of the look of him when he's in Advent Children.
      My dollfie now, Ryu, isn't really anyone, but I might make him into Kadaj, or my made up character Kitsunabu. ^_^;

    23. If space and money aren't an issue in the future, I would definitely get dolls to be Haruka and Kantarou from tactics. :aheartbea

As for my other boys - they're my own characters, but as you can see from my avatar, they're all going to end up cosplaying D.Gray-man characters, too.

    24. My own characters would have words with me--I hope they don't do 'kneecaps'.

Though the dolls only rarely show much of their personalities to me ahead of time. My thought-up characters often show up only when the doll is here.

I wonder who Miko will be?

      Ann in CT
      and Miko has just arrived.

    25. Wow *blinks* Much more than I expected! Jrockers and historical characters would count, I believe, because real people can be characters too, can't they? Hehe! I do not own one, although I have had Alex cosplay Lestat just a little bit ^_^ I think if you really like a character, it wouldn't limit their options, because I would have fun dressing, say 'Snape', up in dark clothing he might wear, tease him he's wearing Muggle clothes and all :p I'd still torment them by varying their wardrobe!

Great characters mentioned. Speaking of Clamp, I would love to have an asexual bodied Koryu from Wish someday....and Kohaku would be cute! Naruto characters....man, I would love to see Neji! I just think he'd be neat with those eyes....

    26. *points to sig*
      *points to avatar*
      'nuff said. :)

    27. I have two ^^; They're not entirely the characters but based-off them ^_^ They have their own personality.

My Kun is Cagalli from Gundam Seed. She doesn't like dresses but I'm always dressing her up cute <3 I can't help it!

My Unoa L-bi is based-off Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

    28. None of my dolls are based on a pre-existing anime/manga/game character, but I do like to make them cosplay for my own entertainment >D Still planning to make them cosplay from The Sandman and other Vertigo titles.

    29. Do myths/folklore count? My Snake is from various bits of Native American folklore and the Garden of Eden story.

Whether he counts or not, though, I love seeing other people's character dolls. Especially when they don't keep too strictly to the original story and let the character develop further; I mean, it's nice to see a Sephiroth in full uniform, but I want to see a Sephiroth hanging out in his PJs too, you know?

I love some of the ideas mentioned on this thread - Koryu and Kantarou would be so great to see. :D

    30. None of my doll(s) are based off other characters but they cosplay.

    31. I'm going to be having two character dolls, and two that aren't. Itachi and Kabuto from Naruto.

      Kabuto because I <3 him.
Itachi because he demanded it. I was browsing Happydoll, and looked at the Arthur, and he just jumped out at me practically saying, "I am Itachi. You are bringing me home eventually. Or I will use Tsukiyomi on you."

    32. *feels like she's cheated*
confession: Neil actually evolved from the character i played in a class play//production one year.

The play is called Dolls and it was written by Jerome McDonough in 1988, if you want to look it up. His part is here.

It's not the worlds gretaest play and my teacher had the worst directional skills so she couldn't actually comprehend his part, so i use to fight with her almost every class about how he should act and be portrayed. In the end i acted it the way she wanted it done for our classes and on the night i acted it out the way he would have actually said it had he been there.

The audience loved it but she gave me a stupid mark for not doing it how she had dictated it -___-; high school theatre is such a drama.

Neil just kind of stuck with me after that, I guess there is more to it, but basically from there he evolved and died.

    33. I have an Elfdoll Wu that is based on the character, Miroku, from Inuyasha. :)

    34. Yes! Exactly what I meant! That way, it won't be as if you need the doll in limited wardrobe. And with Cloud, you could crossdress him too; they did in the game lol

Great stories! Yes, I think any mythology/legend/story counts.

      It counts ^_^

Ah! I love Miroku :D I've seen Sesshoumaru around somewhere here, once, too...No Inuyashas? Imagine if someone had the set of those three (and a chibi Shippo)!

    35. My Karl Lejonhjärta is of course based on the character in Astrid Lindgren's book The Brothers Lionheart. He's not still the ten year old version in the book though, he's a developed "fanfic" version a few years older, and a few worlds wiser as well. ;)

(And if I don't hurry up and get his brother home soon I fear he'll attack me in my sleep. *looks angstfully into empty wallet*)

    36. One of my new boys is based on Tsuzuki from Yami no Matsuei, personality wise. I tend to not create character dolls, but I don't mind cosplaying them.

    37. <-- Mildly obsessed with Sesshoumaru, which led to the enevitable creation of a Sesshoumaru doll. ^^;

    38. Moridin from the Wheel of Time and in a few weeks I shall have Tom Riddle.

Yep, two literary overlord types :D

    39. Can't wait to see a Tom Riddle! He's my 2nd favorite character in the series (Snape's my first). And omg I love your avatar :D

    40. Why thank you m'dear :daisy

I shall let you know when Mr. R's fit for public viewing, though, if I forget feel free to poke my inbox *has goldfish-esque memory*

    41. At this moment, all my dolls have their original animecharacters.

First there's case E.E.He accidentaly tried to revive her sister and now he really thinks that he's Edward Elric from FMA. Poor kid.
My second doll, Mizuho Kazami is based on Mizuho Kazami from series Onegai (Please) Teacher and Onegai Twins.
And finally my newest freak-idea. I recently ordered AR Cien. He's going to look like Uchiha Sasuke from Naruto. Not that he's Sasuke, but a narutard who lost his memory and woke up in forest, dressed like Sasuke. So now he really acts like that animeguy.

Pathetic yes, but owning alchemist who suffers inferiority complex, sexy alien and angsty teenage-ninja.....is actually going to be fun.

    42. I Don't Even Have A Doll To begin with, I am Here To see what it is all about, BEFORE i Buy it, and if i were to purchase a Dolfie then i would most likley do a character recreation, I just Can't Afford one at this time.

    43. Sorry about posting again!

    44. Sorry about posting twice it was an accident

    45. Hahaha! I have only 1 doll and he's Cloud Strife.
He's not cosplaying. He IS Cloud.

    46. Right now i dont have any dolls that are modeled after any character but i would like to have a Rin from Inuyasha - older tho or maybe kinda Alternate Universe-like. Also Izark and Noriko from Kanata Kara, i've been fan of that particular pair forever. And i would like to have a Set of Angels <3 But that would have to wait till i am finished with all my other doll plans xD Like several Original Characters and my beloved Rpg Characters.

    47. Aha, there's your Cloud, georgia! He is so scarily Cloud it isn't funny lol He's a great one, seriously; I always enjoy seeing him. That avatar looks like a message for Sephiroth, no? ^_^

Same here. Lately, I've been wanting to do my own BJD version of 'Ocean's 11', but that's one plan that'll never be a go! When I was a teen and FFVII just came out, man, I would have poured so much into making a Sephiroth. Now I'm here with my original characters, which I never thought were very good. Ironic, isn't it?

    48. They aren't up high on the to-do list, but I have three character dolls in mind.

A Filia Ul Copt & Xelloss from The Slayers, as they are historically two of my favourite characters; I also think BJDs of those characters would look awesome. I also want to make a human Luna/Princess Kaguya from Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon because she is my favourite anime character. ^^

    49. I am planning two comic book girls, one from each of the two comic books I read. (No Details!)

    50. My two up-and-coming dolls are kinda this type of thing, they're both from a private fic of mine that I've been working on for...6 years.... There's Alassie who's my main character, and then there's Legolas, who yes, will be Legolas from LOTR cuz my fic is kind of like a non-N-17-rated doujinshi, it's a BIT more clean.... But yeah, he'll be Legolas, and here's a quick drawing of Lassi that Alodia did for me:
She's gonna be a Tan DES with special ED eyes! and that custom outfit... ^___^
So, yeah, I'll have one literary character who'll develop further, and one original character who'll develop further ^^

    51. no plans as currently saving but I'd love to see a hiei and kurama dolls! (i love those two especially when they're together!) I know someone on here has Hitori Sohma and Shuichi Shindou

    52. One of the main draws of BJDs is that they can be whatever you want them to be. On that note, sure, I will create the costuming for each character I desire. I've collected different color eyes and wigs for that reason. Character #1 for me will be Genjo Sanzo from Saiyuki. I've just about collected all the parts I need, now I just need the time to sit and assemble them!

    53. Salim and Astri are very loosely based on two Harry Potter characters.

    54. Renji and Byakuya are based off.. well, Renji and Byakuya from Bleach. Though they are in their own AU, both being vampires and all, and of course, they have personality traits of their own that developed as i bonded with them more... ;)

    55. Kefka is very much my version of the crazy villain from FFVI. I've always had an obession with him, and Shiwoo has the perfect little smirk. Right bodybuild, too, through being obsessive, I've tracked down Kefka's vital stats and he's a skinny little thing.

Likewise, my modded Dreaming El head is Flea the Magician from Chrono Trigger, another character I adore. He's a very good match for my mental image of the Mystic mage.

I don't feel at all limited by the fact that they're based off existing characters. Sure, game/anime/move/manga characters tend to have one set costume, but I don't believe for one moment that in "reality", they only wear the same outfit all the time. Nobody does that. With Kefka, it's not even a problem, because no two designs of his outfit look the same. I love designing outfits for Kefka, actually. He has such a messed up personality that dressing him is very fun. It's certainly no more limiting to me than my other dolls are; I have to keep their personalities in mind when I dress them.

I'm planning at least two more character dolls, General Leo from FFVI and Magus from Chrono Trigger, possibly even more.

    56. I'm in the process of making a Kotoko doll (from the anime / manga Chobits). ;3

    57. I don't think I could everlet any of my girls stay just one way forever. Drusilla who I have had for about 4 years now has gone through many "personailities" to say, she is much like myself, changing styles to fit her mood. Though when I first recieved her she was heavily influenced (name and attitude) off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Drusilla character - down to the point of carrying around a little porcelin doll of her own! Currently she is in need of restringing but has a killer faceup that has yet to see the light of pictures, very kabuki-esque (the talented Small Cosmos did it for her, as she does all of Dru's faceups ^^: ). Dru, in herself, seems to be quite a character and likes to act out as much as possible!

I have often wanted to cosplay with her, but am just so incredibly busy (lazy) to ever make things for her, who knows if it will ever happen (hasn't ever since I first got her).

Lex is just Lex, she really is just her own girl. But my new girls that are coming, the Twins I call them (two Soo mini fees) I'm looking at references of twin characters in movies, books and the like to help in develop a sense of who they might be. I wish I knew of more manga and Japanese/HK cinema that had twins it in, more like dark twins. So far what I have seen doesn't really impress me too much. So if you have any reccomendations... ;)

    58. Well, my Juri Arya is loosely based off the elven character Arya in Christopher Paolini's Heritage Saga, even though I change her hair color around so she usually has white hair more often than black. And I am planning on getting a Souldoll Asiter next year to be the hero of the story, and Arya's romantic interest, Eragon. All my other dolls are original characters - but I love this story so much, and the dolls just fit so nicely, it had to be done. :)

    59. My dolls cosplay to anime conventions with me, so I suppose they are that character when they're in costume! (Just like I'm way too into character when I cosplay, lol...)

    60. I have Chii (volks official Chii) and I have Chii (Ken Stone's modified Soo version).
