BJD Artists Workshop & Retreat/ 2 Scholarships/ Discussion

Aug 29, 2007

    1. Wow, it would be neat if there would be a day to teach people :D I can't do either. But I look forward to photos, it sounds incredible!

    2. I'm getting sooooo nervous waiting for the 12th. *bites nails* C'mon, hurry up announcement day... hurry up.

    3. I have not got my email yet, but I asked for it to be sent to my home email instead of the office so I could send payment over the weekend.

    4. Will the winners be posted here? or will you be pming them here or the email address they sent you?

    5. We will make an announcement on the 12th that the scholarship winners have been selected. It is their choice to remain anonymous or allow us tell everyone who they are.

Today is the last day for scholarship entries. We'll spend tomorrow going over everything and coming up with the winners.

We have received A LOT of entries, so thanks to all for your participation. And if you don't win this time, please try again. If this first one goes well, we will definitely plan for more.

Both days are full now. We're also going to be putting an LE-1 doll on Ebay for a benefit, so we can buy lots of extra supplies to have on hand.. you know, in case everyone gets completely nuts and can't stop making dolls, painting dolls, tattooing dolls....! :kitty2
      Catrina

    6. Wow, I am getting so excited about this! :sumomo:

Catrina, will those of us who have registered and paid already be getting information about materials and so forth in our e-mail soon?

    7. Well, it looks like this first retreat will be a blast as well as informative. I hope everything works out great as I look forward to attending next year's event.

    8. I second this question... I'm taking the sculpting class and am totally clueless about the supplies! :doh

    9. I just found out that I'll be working not terribly far and I think I can go! So excited, just emailed about registration!

    10. We'll have the lists for you by Friday. The artists are still making them up.
Twigling is just getting back from Norway, and she's been putting her list together.

I think the idea is, take a look at their lists and compile what you'd like to try from all of them. There is no reason to get everything on every list. This will be fun though, peeking into everyone's personal supplies list : - )
We have made a private forum, where everything will be all set out for you. Just hang on a little bit. We're just finishing it up.
      Catrina

    11. I've just sent out notices to our two winners.

Yes, it was such a hard choice, and so much wonderful talent out there!

I will not send out condolence messages to anyone, until the two winners have accepted. Should either one have to decline, we will pass this along to someone else. If the winners agree, I will announce their names.

Thanks (tired yawn after agonizing decisions)
      Catrina

P.S. Supply lists: Paul will have his by Friday. Twigling is back in Australia now *waves* and she is busy writing up her presentation. She promises her list tomorrow.

    12. Even if you can't say their names, can you tell us how and why they were chosen?

    13. Well, at least I can stop avidly checking my email. My refresh button thanks you. :)

    14. I have posted an update in the NEWS Section regarding a change of instructors on Sunday. Welcome SDink and Yamamuratatsuya.

We are waiting to hear from the second scholarship applicant, and then we will email everyone. I really didn't anticipate it would take me so long to contact the winners before emailing the other applicants. And if the scholarship is unclaimed, it will be awarded to one of the people who applied. Thanks for your understanding.

    15. I am sorry to hear about Lilykoi, I certainly wish her the best for recovery! That MSC is pure evil. She needs some elves to spray it for her. Outside. I am excited about being able to meet and work with SDink who is an amazing artist! I am so glad to be able to attend, thank you Catrina et al. for putting together this amazing event!

    16. You might want to try sending another email to the scholarship recipient from a different email address too... I know sometimes my email will filter some emails from companies into the bulk/spam box while not doing other emails from the same place (who knows)

So if their email sucks as badly as mine does, they might have just not gotten it!

    17. Hi everyone,
The winners are in the NEWS section now.

The second person's internet was down, and that was the reason she could not get her scholarship email. So thanks to everyone for understanding why I didn't send the emails out very quickly.

Winners are Batchix and Lady Saiyuki.

I hope everyone will wish them well and also agrees with me that they both truly deserve to attend.

Thanks to everyone for your participation. We will have more of these events, and I am determined to keep offering scholarships.
      Catrina

    18. Congrats to Batchix and Lady S. on their win! I am so totally looking forward to seeing their AWESOME work and learning from them! I especially hope Lady S. brings her little guy along as I haven't yet seen him in person :aheartbea

And I am very sorry about Lilykoi and hope she feels better soon. :( I hope she'll be able to join us for dinner or drinks or something at least, if she can't be around the chemicals.

    19. Thank you so very much Catrina for this opportunity to go to this Retreat and workship, I'm so incredibly happy that I am able to go ^_^ *Huggles for Catrina and the scholarship commitee* and sorry for not being able to get back to you right away ^^; but thanks so very much for your patience ^.^

Thankies Bunnydots ^_^...an no worries...I'll be definitely brining a few Ted's with me ^_^ and would love for you to see them ^_^ I'll have at least 3 different colors with me with three totally different looks ^_^ and I may even have the first Hanyuu with me too ^_^ if I do she'll be in white ^_^ and she may even have a Ted's hands if I don't get hers done...but if I can at least get her head done that will be enough for me ^_^

I'm way super excited about this and I can't wait to go up and meet everybody and I totally look forward to meeting you ^_^
      *Hugs*

I too am saddened about Lilykoi and her not being able to do the workshop, I hope she will be okay and I hope that she'll at least be able to come and meet with everybody ^_^

    20. LadySaiyuki - I very much want to see the Hanyuu too! If you get me my Ted in time, I will definitely bring him along and try to work on a faceup for him in the workshop - by then I should have better ideas for a "look"! and then you can bring three other Ted colors than mine so people can see four :)

    21. Thank you so much Catrina and the others who worked on this! This will be such a wonderful opportunity to put our heads together and figure out how to work with greater ease and quality! I'm so excited!

    22. Thank you Batchix.

It just occurred to me one day that we spend so much time supporting and encouraging Asian artists, but IMHO not enough encouraging the international ones. So this is our small contribution to that effect, and we hope that everyone comes away excited and inspired by the possibilities of what they can create. I think through the history of dollmaking and art, having mentors is important.

I really do appreciate everyone's patience as we try to balance the workload of keeping our business running while we add in the responsibilities of the event.
We have created a private forum with all the information you will need to attend. There are a couple more artists left who need to send in their supplies lists and we'll be completely finished. The supplies are not difficult to get, so no worries.

      Wow, four weeks to go..
      Catrina

    23. Congrats to Batchix and Lady Saiyuki!!

I'm really looking forawrd to the workshop. I really can't believe it's only a month away.

Dollyholic, will there be an email or something with regard to accessing the forum - or are you just waiting for the supply lists? I don't mean to sound impatient, if I do, just curious.

      ~Kristen

    24. Congrats to Batchix and LadySaiyuki! You two have talent.

I can't wait for the workshop. I can't belive I get the chance to go and that it was actually near (as compared to CA or NY).

    25. Yes, we will email you all with the address and you user ID and password.

I think we'll get the final supply lists from the artists today, and then this weekend we'll send that out to you.

Thanks! So many details and we are just wrapping up the supply lists.

      Catrina

    26. UPDATE:

We have sent out e-mails to all registrants, instructors and guests. There is a link to the event forum along with your password and ID.

We are still waiting for some supply lists and should have them this weekend.

      4 weeks from today...
      Catrina

    27. Thanks to Catrina and LilyKoi for giving me this great opportunity, I feel so honored to be chosen, I do hope LilyKoi gets better and my best wishes go out to her.

I hope I can inspire those whom I instruct and learn from those who are instructing, I can't wait to meet everyone :D

    28. SDink, I am so thrilled to be able to meet you, and to learn from you, I admire your work, you are an amazing artist. Thank you Catrina Et al for this opportunity.

    29. Where have I been?! :? How did I manage to miss this thread till a couple days go? I didn't see it till all the spots were filled.:doh I hate I'm going to miss it.:...( I hope there will be another one soon. I could kick myself though for missing this one.:|

      Yia

Ya'll have a great time! Hope to see you next go around.

    30. Yay, that's the spirit! At this event, the teachers will become students as other teachers step up. I think everyone is enjoying the thought of seeing how everyone else approaches their art.

Cheryl, it's going to be a total pleasure having you. I asked LilyKoi who she would like to replace her, and you were a great choice!! It's going to be a fun event, and we are so happy you can be a part of this first one.

      Catrina

    31. Oh thank you so much! I look forward to meeting you as well :D

    32. Hi! Can someone please send me the address of the event website, as I am out of town and I stored it on my home computer? yes I know I am a pest.

    33. Ahh!!! Thanks so much Globalsea!

    34. Catrina -- I hope cool pictures from the forum will be posted here. Do you think this will become an annual event? I would definitely attend future seminars.

    35. Hello Robbin,
We will be doing a mini-workshop at IDEX in Florida coming up next January. The presentations will be joint sculpting and painting. They will only be 2-3 hours each, so not anywhere near as in-depth as the Ohio workshop.

We'll be talking with the attendees to see what they are interested in for the future. We hope this is the start of many artist events in the future. If we can make it through this first one :eusa_pray I could not do this without help from so many people both in my shop and volunteers who will be assisting at the workshop.

      Catrina

    36. Thank you so much Catrina and all of your helpers, I am so looking forward to this event!

    37. What a fantastic line-up of teachers, scholarship invitees and attendees!!! I am so envious of everyone who will be there. I hope you all will share in thoughts and idea and photos. It all sounds like it will be an incredible experience. :)

    38. Oof! >.< I did something really silly today at work that I hope has no affect on my painting this weekend...;__; I sort of crushed my fingers in a door while carrying a huge box. :/ My index finger is sprained, but it doesn't really hurt at the moment. I've wrapped it up with a popsicle stick and gauze just to be on the safe side and to make sure it doesn't hurt later on. It's nothing too serious, but it had better hurry up and heal, sheesh! >.<

Well, it's coming up really fast, guys! I'm super excited, and I can't wait to meet all of you. :) Thanks again, Catrina, for the opportunity!

    39. Gah!! I hope you'll be alright; I'll definately be sending Finger Healing Vibes your way :) .

And...only a few days to go! So very excited!

    40. I know! I'm so psyched. When I told my family and friends, they all threw in for me so that I could go. I'm so excited! Now I just need to find a place to sleep. ;)

    41. Very exciting, it's this weekend! I went to a doll meetup tonight in Pittsburgh and had the honor of meeting Donn, the amazing sculptor we all know here for his Bishonen boys, and he is looking forward to the retreat, and then serendipitously one of the people had brought a lovely Lusis painted by SDink! It definately put me in the mood!

    42. Update from the BDJ artist event:

      1. There is a welcome sign up for the artists in our downtown.
      2. And I picked up the weary Twigling at the airport Wednesday night.
      3. Morbidollz and Belladonna arrived early this morning.

      More to come...
      Catrina

    43. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I'm so jetlagged!! But I'm here, and I'm all psyched!!! It's gonna be so much fun :D

    44. Hope you have a brilliant time!! WISH I was there too.

    45. Just got back, I had an amazing time! It was so wonderful to be in one room with all that amazing talent! Thank you so much to my teachers, Paul Pham, Moribidollz, Belladona and SDink. And everyone who I met there including my fantastic roomate Natalie, and of course Catrina, who has the coolest store BTW! I look forward to the next event.

    46. It was very fun, even though I was only able to be there for one day, there were tons of lovely people and Twigling was a GREAT instructor!!!

    47. I just got back myself...and it was absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much Catrina, Twigling, Paul Pham, Moribidollz, Belladona, and SDink and everyone who shared their creative energy over the weekend.

      Whoo-hoo!

    48. ok, so did anyone get pix?? and is there going to be some sort of official write up type article?

    49. I got back last night - had to leave a few hours early due to work deadlines. Was sorry to miss Paul Pham's workshop but he did an AMAZING handout for which I can't thank him enough! The programs were great and so was meeting all the cool artists who came as guests including batchix, LadySaiyuki, Donn and his partner Dreaux, armeleia and others. Many, many thanks to Catrina and her husband Denny and their family and staff for all their very hard work putting on the workshops, driving us around and even cooking our lunches. I hope Catrina can take a good long rest now :) and that she is able to have more such events so people who couldn't make it to this one get a chance to come.

    50. Just woke up XD. I got back home from my flight @ about 2am (after I put in a claim formy delayed luggage.... again). It was perhaps.. no it WAS the best group doll experience ever. I'll be gabbing about it in my blog so I dont clog this thread up ^^;

    51. After an *interesting* ride home, I'm back safely too. Sadly, the same can't be said for Sevyn. :(

I had the best time this weekend! There were so many awesome people and it was a great atmosphere. It really felt like there was a spirit of cooperation going on with us all. I can't wait to go to future events. :D I really feel like I learned a lot and built some confidence.

      PICS THREAD!

    52. It sounds like everyone had an awesome time. I would have loved to join you guys. I can't wait to see more photos when they're posted. :3

    53. I had a wonderful time and learned so much from everyone.

Thank you VinylFaerie for starting the pic thread. I will be uploading by some by tomarrow if not sooner.

    54. I didn't start the thread, I just linked it. ;)

    55. I had such a wonderful time! Thank you so very very much Catrina and family~~ I really hope we get to do this again next year! I really want to see everyone again!

If anyone's going to dollpa in Nov I'll be there with a booth of my clothes~(I live right by LAX) so please stop by and say hello!

    56. It was such a fnatastic event and absolutely wonderful meeting everyone. This was my first BJD get together and I couldn't have asked for better. I'm so happy that everyone enjoyed the demo. Let's hope that there will be another one next year---with a casting/moldmaking demo!

      Paul
      Dollcis

    57. Oh yes, I agree with this! XD

    58. Me too! A casting demo would be awesome - tho I suppose it would have to be outside because of the fumes?

    59. Fourthing this! :)
