BJD Artists Workshop & Retreat/ 2 Scholarships/ Discussion

Aug 29, 2007

    1. Oh my gosh, well... I hope to have something photographable soon!!!

      :-D

    2. Thanks, hope to see it soon!

We've been working on this for a long time. I'm happy we can offer some openings to DOA members, as well as the scholarships. Everyone is very excited to get together and collaborate.
      Catrina

    3. I'm confused LOL What's the "retreat"? I've heard nothing bout it?

    4. Go here for info:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161552

I think this is part workshop, part retreat. The artists will not only be learning from each other (several will be cross-training at something they haven't done before) but also spending time together and sharing ideas and philosophies. That's the "retreat" part.

      Catrina

    5. Wow. I'd love to go, but sadly I am lacking in the funds for any sort of plane ticket. It is a wonderful concept, and I look forward to hearing how it goes. :D

      ~Anrui

    6. Neat. ^^ If I was actually a person involved in making and customizing dolls, I would go.

    7. Are the scholarships intended primarily for artist doll sculptors only, or is the competition open to both sculptors and face-up artists?

    8. It's open to both.
But if you are mainly a facepainter, we feel you will benefit a lot from the sculpting, and sculptors also benefit from facepainting. Hope that makes sense.
      Catrina

    9. This is such a wonderful opportunity, thank you so much for offering it! I sent in my photos. I hope you will be offering it again in the future, just in case I can't go this time due to funds.

    10. Thanks, got 'em.

      Good luck!
      Catrina

    11. Very cool. This is an excellent idea... I registered... now I just have to cross my fingers!

    12. It's kind of short notice for people who need to plan things months in advance. (I happen to have a wedding that weekend anyhow.) If there is something like this planned in the future, can a few more months of notice be given? Completing sculptural work and saving money for plane tickets can take more than a month and a half.:sweat

    13. I wish we could offer more spaces, but the artists want this to be very small and intimate.

If anyone wants to work on sharing a room, I will pass along info to everyone registered, because some of the rooms have pull out sofabeds.

    14. Sorry about that. You might have read we have had severe flooding here in Ohio lately. Things are finally getting back to normal. We did make an announcement for this workshop actually at the SF BJDCon in early June.. and there were flyers there for it.

We will have other events planned in the future too. The IDEX event in Orlando, Florida has invited us to do two workshops there next January.

      Best,
      Catrina

    15. Very wonderful concept and I wish you guys all the fun in the world. ^_^ Sadly it's a little short-notice this time. I'd absolutely love to attend but Resin Con will wipe me out for a long time. <_<;; Do you plan to do this again in the future? I'd love to attend such an event eventually.

    16. Wow, really? I never saw one. :? Maybe we'll try for the next one! :)

    17. Yes, I know, I was not able to attend Resin Con because it's too close to this event too.

We will have more in the future. They will all be very small though, so that everyone can get enough attention and be able to see.

Yes, we had flyers and info from the web site on my tables at the SF BJDCon. They were almost gone by the end, so I know a lot of people were really interested to see this event coming up.

    18. SOB if I was in the US I would SO be going to this. Good luck, it sounds idyllic

    19. We are not limiting registrants to US citizens, but I do understand it would add to the expense.

Perhaps one day I will assist in organizing one in Europe? Anyone interested?

      *winks*

    20. <leaps to feet waving whole arm in air>

      ''me!me!me!me!..."

Seriously tho it sound absolutely brilliant.

    21. I have some ideas about this, and a possible sponsor.

Please contact me after this event, and let's compare notes.

      Catrina

    22. Great! I will do. Thank you very much :) <grins>

    23. sounds like a blast. :( Unfortunately, being now jobless, and without funds, it's not practical to try to go to any real doll events such as this :( Maybe next year

    24. Wow! - I wish I could go! but I'm one of the folk who need longer lead time - I have a major system upgrade that week at work, and can't be gone before or after ---- Darn, I was at the SF BJDcon 2 days and missed this information...

Hope you have more events soon. Would love to see more info about the association - is this intended to be an organization that artists would join? I've been making ooak bjds for a few years now, and would always love the chance to interact with others with the same addiction...

    25. Hi Pat,
Aw, rats. Too bad you didn't see those flyers on our tables with the info. I think the show was so exciting, it would have been hard to see everything.

Regarding the association, I will be talking with people at the first gathering to see what they would like. I know that it's going to be valuable for the artists to have a professional peer group to exchange ideas with and learn from. We all can learn from each other's successes and mistakes, too.

Let me know how it could be helpful to you, and I will try to give your input as well.
      Catrina

    26. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! Such short notice! I am dying to go, I have to see if I can work it out with work!

    27. I want to go, but I don't know about my schedule at that time yet...

    28. this sounds like a blast! Great idea guys!

    29. Wow, this sounds incredibly interesting and fun. I haven't done much if the way of making my own dolls but I really wish I could go. I guess I'll have to wait for the next one though.

    30. yep - definitely spent too much time oggling the beautiful dolls, and not paying enough attention to the written material and talking to folk - it was neat to see so many bjd related items in one place!

I know i've been taking some of my bjds to NIADA since I started attending, and i'm kind of surprised how few of the artists recognize what they are --- but once they start looking into them, they are fascinated. I think the more visibility you can give this artform - the more likely you are to attract artists to join the movement and add to the range of bjds available.

looking forward to seeing what comes next
      take care

    31. Catrina - I registered, I'm very interested and it's in a very very convenient location for me indeed. (Though I think I shall skip the Rock Hall. My name is supposedly on the founders list there or something. People who go can check out the "local bands" exhibit that's stuck in a dusty corner to read about all my ex-bf's bands from 20 years ago if they like.)

I do have a question though. I'm a little confused, if we're not trying out for a scholarship (I am not) do we have to send in photos of our work? I am a beginner at the sculpture stuff - my hands as I type this are full of Magic Sculp residue but it's for elements for my jewelry design class, not for dolls. Just how much of an artist do you have to be? It sounded like it was OK for beginners to come, or did I read that wrong?

I'd love to come and meet all the artists, some of whom I've already had e-mail discussions with or what not... :)

thanks again for all your efforts.

    32. They really should do something like this in Australia. I would have loved to go *sigh* and its so cheap too.

    33. Hi there Bunnydots,
My hubby is in the rock hall too, LOL. So i guess we are family then, huh?

If you are making a general registration, there is no need to send me your photos. In fact, please don't! :fangirl: I think my poor inbox will be overflowing with JPEGs by the end of the week.

we will have a magical mixture of pure beginners, pro-amateurs, professional artists, and the curious. The main thing is, this is not a fandom event but a weekend of very hard work. Only come if you really want to spend time squeezing every little thing out of it. Sure, it's going to be fun, but the main thing will be sharing skills and information.

      Catrina

    34. No problem Catrina, I want to make it clear that while I support artists, I am not a "fandom" type person (which is largely why you never see me at any of these other cons) and I am willing to work hard. I already do at a full-time job and art school :) I just can't take any doll classes at my school, I actually talked to my regular jewelry instructor about it and the resin is too toxic to be used in the building, or something. :( I have been looking into a sculpture curriculum as I am almost done with the metalwork one but we are not sure the sculpture curriculum as offered would really let me do what I want to do. I have actually been looking for someone to teach me privately but so far no luck on that - this workshop sounds like it might be a good start though...

And now you've got me dying to know who your hubby is :)

      Thanks again

    35. I live in Canada near Ottawa Ontario. I just registered so I will see if there are still any openings. It sounds wonderful. I am fairly new to the bjd world. I just got my first doll a month ago. I figure I have a lot to learn and this retreat would be a step in the right direction.

    36. Oh good!! I am glad it's for beginners also. I sent an email and I was told that registration materials would be sent to me but I was slightly concerned about the fact that I hadn't made any dolls. I have really been wanting to learn but I didn't really want to fly by the seat of my pants because I know resin is poisonous and didn't want to make a mistake that would harm my health. I am ready to work hard but can I be a fan also ;) I hope so!

    37. Oh also I am planning on driving from Chicago with my boyfriend so if anyone doesn't have a way to get there from this area or needs to fly into Chicago for some reason I can most likely fit two more people in my car. You can email me at [email protected] if you want.

    38. Oh make no mistake, I love the dolly fandom and I love fandom events. I just think this would be a snooze for anyone who isn't 100% into the making and painting of dolls. We won't have any contests or fun events at all. It's going to be work, work, work and lots of "shop talk" all weekend. What a bore if you aren't into that!

      Catrina

    39. This is such a great opportunity to be able to learn from professional BJD artists!!!
I'm also glad that they are welcoming beginners too. I sent in my registration and now its time to cross my fingers and toes and hope I can attend! :aheartbea

    40. I can't even explain how excited I am by the prospect of attending this event. Not only would it be exciting to see how other artists work, but to actually get to see friends from DoA would also be great. :3

I'm definitely going to start putting together my portfolio this upcoming week. A scholarship would be my only chance to attend, so I'm putting in the effort for sure. I'm especially excited at the prospect of hearing about Twigling's dolls, and getting to see some of Armeleia's work in person. :)

    41. I'm so excited for this! I can't wait to meet everyone and get some real hands on instruction from the people that inspire me.
And I'll say this again, Catrina, you are AMAZING!

      TC

    42. In Asia, if you have a great desire to make BJD, there are the most fantastic BJD schools you can go to, to learn direct from a master dollmaker. There are also artist groups in several countries which put on exhibits, and hold joint events with other countries. These exhibits are mainly for their peers to see, but the public is also invited.

Outside of Asia, we have many people with a burning desire to learn dollmaking but there is no school for us. Even the books we get are difficult to translate. I hope this group helps some people move ahead with their dreams, even though it is very small.

    43. I am so ridiculously excited about this event! The artists teaching are amazing; I get goosebumps at the prospect of learning from them! Thank you so much Catrina for making this possible-you rock.

    44. I know you said it couldn't be helped but I agree with idrisfynn, it's awfully short notice for people who have to plan ahead. (not that I could afford the plane trip to Ohio in such a short notice... in the circuit I am it costs me twice as much to go to Ohio than to go to New York or LA... go figure) Also in that month my mother is getting hip replacement operation so it's rather hard for me to go away in October. (Althought that is really no real fault that anyone can foresee)

I would have loved to go but *_* circonstances makes it impossible for me to attend :...(

    45. I know this is shortish notice on DOA, but we did release it at the SF BJD Con the first weekend of June and the site has been up since May.

I think the thing to remember is this will be the first one, with hopefully many more to follow if we get a lot of interest. There is always a time for everything, and you can't really have your mom delay her surgery due to this event : - )

Hopefully next time, so please don't worry! There are others in your situation with stuff happening in October.
      Catrina

    46. I am very interested in this! :) What a great idea!

    47. This is so wonderful! I would love to go but can't. I was wondering about the workshops at the IDEX show in Orlando, though. Will you be posting any info on it later in the year? Also, will there be membership available in the BJD artist association perhaps at a later date? Just curious!

    48. Hi there,
We will have more info soon about the IDEX show events. I can tell you right now it will be one artist doing a facepainting demo / hands on "make it take it" instruction and one doing a doll sculpting workshop where you will sculpt doll parts. The IDEX workshop fees are $100 each I think. The workshops will be well-publicized by IDEX itself.

We haven't decided yet about how everyone feels regarding actual "memberships" in the association for artists. The whole concept might become political, so we will make this decision very carefully. Basically all the association is there for is to perform the organization of events and workshops to support artists. That's it. We have no intention of this group being used for any "seal of approval" or "mark of recognition or achievement" of any individual or company's abilities or talents. (Such as NIADA etc. which have juries to let some in, or keep some out). As much as possible, we'd like to concentrate solely on the art, creativity, fun and magic by helping people learn new skills and collaborate. Anything more becomes too much like a clique.

In the future we may have a private (locked) forum for the artists to collaborate in a private and safe place. It really depends on what everyone asks for at this first event.
      Catrina

    49. double post. dang!

    50. Ah, I see what you mean. Personally I think high stress and competitive membership does take the fun out of making dolls. I hope my question didn't come across in a negative way :doh . I hope this does a lot to promote artists and keep them going making beautiful dolls.

    51. No, I really think your question was good and I appreciate being able to discuss it here.

I think making these dolls is difficult enough, so if we make the group into an elitist or exclusionary group, it will discourage people who are less connected.

There has been so much excitement about this event, thanks for all the emails. And thanks Dollist for asking a very important question.
      Catrina

    52. I really wish I could afford to go to America for this, but alas such is not my fortune. But if ever there is going to be any plans for doing something like this in Northern Europe I would be very interested indeed in organizing. So count me in on the list of people to contact for a workshop on the other side of the pond.

Best of luck, and I hope there will be lots of pictures from your event that all of us misfortunates can watch afterwards.

    53. Hi Catrina - I just noted that today was Sept. 5 which was supposed to be close of registration, but I don't think I received a payment link in the mail to pay? If you're still getting set up, that's fine, but I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

    54. I was wondering the same thing. I registered from my office email and was at home yesterday. So I came into the office this morning and eagerly opened my mail, but no news yet. Sigh!! I will just keep on hoping.

    55. I was wondering too, but assumed that everything's still being set up. I hope my registration was successful. I really want to attend. :)

    56. I'd really like to go to, but when I registered, all I got was a form response that reg info would be sent out in a few days. I haven't gotten anything since then. :( I really want to go to this!

    57. Me also but I also haven't heard anything!

    58. Catrina's probably just getting set up, since a lot of people haven't heard. I'm sure we'll all hear soon :)

    59. Emails were all sent out today, with links to the registration area and such.

We will also be opening up a private forum, so everyone can say hello and also get the supplies lists from each artist. You don't have to buy separate sets for each artist, but pick and choose what you'd like to add to your own art box.

Twigling will be sending us a list of things for sculpting, and that will even include some small files, etc. along with the type of sculpting medium we will be working with.

Please watch for your emails from our registration page!

As we mentioned before, the scholarship people have until the 10th to get their entries in. We'll be making an announcement on the 12th with winner names (if the winners are ok with everyone knowing who they are).

      Thanks!
      Catrina
