Anyone have off-topic Hujoos?

Dec 23, 2016

    1. Omg. This is so gorgeous. Detailed faceup ive ever seen on a freyr *-*

    2. @SaelaVe
How did I miss this notification?!? Your cat is adorable--I love the detail at the forehead: it's so detailed!

      • x 7
    3. Awesome details SaelaVe. The paws are so cute *-*

    4. Wow! He looks amazing! I love the way you've painted him!
I have two Hujoo's a Nano Freya who I've named Easter and was only completed a few months ago, (sadly I don't think I've gotten any pics of him since I did his face up though it barely shows up at all anyway) and a Cojoo that is still waiting for a face up and eyes, though he/she has an outfit and wig and is named Kikwi.

    5. Oh goodness, there's so many pretty dolls here I'm almost nervous to share my faceup x.x She's the first faceup I've ever done on something with eyeholes, and is actually my second attempt! Since she is ABS plastic (Freya) I had to primer her with white paint to try again since I had no alcohol on hand, it really sucked :/ There's also the fact that I had modded her and had to fix a small part of her mod. Anyways, here's Sonia!

She looks sassy but really she's a big sweetheart ^^

    6. @Asteri

Your girl is super cute! Perhaps it's just a reflection of my childhood, but she reminds me of either Duchess or Marie from the Aristocats. (My sister must have watched that movie a thousand times--once 3 times in one day.)

    7. Wow! These are some really cool dolls, and some exceptional customization happening here! I just stumbled on this thread, and I was intrigued because I have a Hujoo :3nodding:

Here is my Hujoo a closed eyes chocolate skin abs girl:

Her name is Lemon Pledge (which comes from an episode of Laverne & Shirley where they get high from pot brownies, and almost get married to strangers... they ask to use their "spirit names" which are Star Monkey and Lemon Pledge!:mwahaha) She is actually an alien and is plagued by frequent headaches caused by Earth's atmosphere. Her disguise is an old Korean lady who works at a truck stop diner which serves "world famous" homemade pies (it was the pie that attracted her to the job:drool). Also she can be rather cranky:vein.
      :sweat

She has been modded slightly ~ I opened up her eyes slightly, and made them a bit more shapely. Her face-up is a funny story, I tried so many times, but nothing was working for her... and finally said what the heck and just tried some wild arched eyebrows and yellow/orange eyeshadow, and it was perfect for this little nut!

    8. @Studio404 OMG, I love her and her backstory! :love What a great character!

    9. @Studio404

Lemon Pledge was the first dark tan Hujoo I saw--I remember reading your review of her on Flickr.

You convinced me to go with a closed eye Hujoo and then mod her eyes open. I'm so glad to see her again!

    10. @americanseamstress That is so super cool!! ...Going back to look at your posts...
Is Pixel the girl you got and modded her eyes? I think I remembered seeing her, but I didn't know why or from where!

    11. @Studio404

I'm on mobile now, so I can repost the photo in this thread, but Pixel is indeed the doll I purchased after learning that you modded the eyes of your Hujoo. Pixel's eyes are also modded, mostly at the top, but also a bit on the lower lid close to the nose.

She's on this thread a page or so back in the Baroque/Marie Antoinette wig.

    12. I was debating getting a Hujoo tiny of some kind and all of your cute pictures make it harder to resist!

      • x 1
    13. Well, I didn't start with Hujoos, but once Freya came out, I was pretty much sunk... and it's been a slippery slope since my first...
An old photo of the first five, all before being painted... Alice and Marie are the Freyas, Jean and Luc are the Freyrs, and CC is the little Nano Freya... They've since been joined by grey Nano Rabi Bunito and pink Nano Freya Princess Unikitty

Luc is now a handsome siamese (and Jean is a silver tabby-- plus, CC is painted like a galaxy)

I still need Nano Freya and Rabi in white, plus Nano Rabi in grape and full-size Freya in glow-in-the-dark... (I haven't actually got a plan for a purple bun, but it is my favorite color... the others do all have some planning behind them)

    14. @mandlram

Hujoos are pretty cute and addictive--they all are so unique in appearance!

      @Anneko

Wow! I love those family shots! You've got quite the crew! It reminds me of Calico Critters--those were too late for me, but a friend's youngest sister loved them.

    15. Ooh - love seeing everyone's Hujoos, @Studio404 your modded alien/Korean granny is absolutely amazing!

By weird coincidence I'm on the verge of attempting a colour mod (again) on one of my Hujoos, the first attempt was the Rit Dye/acetone method - which had mixed success, I think I wasn't brave enough with the acetone concentration but the green *did* penetrate into the plastic just in a pale pastel shade rather than the bright colour I was aiming for. This time I'm going to be using the iDye poly method, people seem to have used that stuff successfully on ABS computer keyboards and 3D prints (though the latter could be due to the porosity of the pieces)

      • x 1
    16. @Vetinari

iDye Poly works well with ABS plastic--my purple/blue Hujoo Io body earlier in the thread is dyed with iDye Poly.

    17. @americanseamstress Ooh - thanks for the confirm! Just managed to skim through the rest of the thread, all of your Hujoos look amazing - that blue is stunningly intense, and the robot girl is adorable. (I'm hoping the kelly green is the warm green it appears on the packet, if it works out as planned I'll be dying my other teeny hujoo and my pair of goblin minions for one of the larger 1/3 dolls in my group will finally be complete)

      • x 1
    18. @Vetinari

That sounds like quite the project! Ive never used the green, but you can mix different iDye colors to color correct--they won't react with eachother. I did that with the brown--added some black to get darker.

Show us your results or even progress pics if you get the chance.

    19. @americanseamstress again thanks, I wasn't sure if that was riskable! I'm aiming for vivid green for the male (a Wings) and a murkier colour for the female (a huge-eyed Hujoo), being able to mix in another different colour should help wonders there, otherwise I was contemplating being very quick with the greys. I'll try and get some photos - but probably not of the dye bath itself given that I tend to use a black bucket for that so getting clear images would be pretty unlikely (especially given what my photography is like)

      • x 1
    20. @americanseamstress Thank you! (Oh man... yes, I used to have so many of those little Sylvanian Families/Calico Critters! I think my youngest sibling managed to save their cabin when we all moved, so I'm hoping I can get it back and clean it up, since it's a workable size for the Nanos-- and would definitely work for my Nano Rabi's home)

      • x 1
    21. @Anneko

That's the name I was also looking for, Sylvanian. And the scale would probably work for the tiniest Hujoos--I hadn't thought of that!

    22. Bless you for making this thread. I've been looking everywhere for fellow Hujoo owners, and up until now I only knew about the OT Doll & Figure thread (which I think is an awesome thread, just not Hujoo-specific)!

I love your Lo'Gan! His orange skin is so vibrant! :D

She's a little sweetie. Such cute stuffed bears, too! :daisy

YAAAAAY! I'm so happy to find another Dana owner! :D Your girl is beautiful! I love her hair, especially. May I ask what you named her? I'd love to see more photos, if you happen to have any to share!

OMG... :love SHE'S STUNNING! What a fantastic dye job!

Your Freya is super, super cute! Wonderful work on his face-up!

      -----

Recently I bought a secondhand Hujoo Dana, and she's quickly becoming one of my favorites! The sculpt has so much potential---the more I work on her, the more I love her. <3

I gave my Hujoo Dana a face-up a week or so ago and have started styling her, little by little. Her name is Nomi! She loves cinnamon crunch bagels, dancing, and glitter! :daisy

For anyone interested, she is wearing Loongsoul 1/4 high heeled feet. I had to do some slight tweaking to get them on, but they fit quite well!

    23. @PeppermintPocky

Darn! I must have let this thread go for too long, but I'm glad you found it to revive it!

My main Hujoo project (the Isul/Io hybrid) is frustrating me currently (the magnet which holds the head together is slightly crooked), so Ive set her aside temporarily to work on other projects (it's hard not to work on resin when I have accessed to my dolls and Dremel).

I used to have a Sara, and I'd forgotten how small-busted she is (mine was a flapper character, so it worked). It's such a rare quality of BJDs.

Your girl's leotard makes me want to keep sewing for my teenaged character (on-topic Dollshe) who's getting some athletic wear. Im finishing her bra (sports bra) today.

I love holographic spandex, but hate how thin it is for myself, so I figured some 1/3rd scale clothes would get the drape right.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of your girl!

    24. I'm glad I revived this thread, too! ;) I'm sorry to learn your Isul/Io hybrid is frustrating you atm... I hope you are able to fix her magnets! May I ask what color you used to dye her? I know iDyePoly offers multiple shades of blue. (RIT Dyemore, too.)

I really enjoy dolls styled in historical eras so I bet your Hujoo Sara made a cute flapper. :XD: You're right that these girls are small-busted---I nearly did a double take when I opened my Dana's box because I wasn't expecting their size. (I crave variety among my dolls so they're a def' plus in my book!) I like the Action Body's hips, too.

Good luck sewing athletic wear for your Dollshe! :thumbup Nomi's leotard was the first time I ever worked with spandex, and boy, did it give my sewing machine a workout. I'm a sewing novice but am trying to learn more about stitches, etc. mainly because I have had a sewing machine for years and up until recently it was just collecting dust. Someday I'd like to remake Nomi's leotard and double up the front, just so her nylon's waistband don't show through as they do now.

    25. @PeppermintPocky

I buy from the Dharma Trading website which lists only one blue for iDye Poly ("451 Blue"). The website lists multiple blues for iDye Natural, however, which won't work on resin. I'm not familiar with iDye's other poly blues--Dharma is so tempting with how quickly they ship!

I'll be able to fix her magnets--but new X-acto blades would help. I need to go to the store.

It's kind of funny that I'm so excited for this project--it feels strange typing it out, but their magnetic boobs just dried, so now I can make tops with darts in the right places

      • x 1
    26. Ah! I must've been thinking of RIT Dyemore (they have a really striking Sapphire Blue and a softer blue called Kentucky Sky). Thank you for referencing the Dharma Trading website---I've never purchased from there before but I def' have it bookmarked now! :XD:

Do you mind if I ask if your Isul/Io hybrid has any difficulty posing in the shoulder region? My Dana's legs pose great but I find her arm movement rather limited. I don't have any clue if there's a mod I could attempt to fix that, especially since she's made of ABS and I'm not used to working on stuff other than resin. :sweat

Any updates to your project(s)? :daisy I hope your crafts, sewing, etc. is going well, regardless of the intended doll! :thumbup

Since my previous post, I made a tiny balance beam for Nomi:

As well as a pair of statement earrings (what can I say, the girl loves rhinestones :XD:):

I'm also working on her high heels atm. Super excited about those. :D

    27. @PeppermintPocky
No worries about the dye, and Dharma is great!

The SD sized Hujoos (non-resin) are constructed completely differently from the MSDs (I used to own a Sara MSD). The MSDs are made like androids--little gear parts which hook together (so hard pieces moving together make the doll hold its poses). By contrast, the SD (non resin) Hujoos are more like vinyl dolls (like a reverse Obitsu), with soft vinyl kips which allow each part of the body to hold a pose.

As a result, and unlike the MSDs, SD (non resin) Hujoos can hold in between poses that the MSDs can't (you have to click the joints into different angles and you can't go halfway in between on the MSDs, but you can for the SDs).

However, because the vinyl is squishy, the SD doll must be strung rather rightly to hold poses, and the joints fit together so tightly that the doll has a tendency to pinch. You have to kind of fight the body to move it (movements aren't smooth, similarly to the MSDs, but for a different reason).

Once posed, however, you could pick up the doll by the ankle in a contorted pose, drop the doll on the ground, and each joint wouldn't move an inch.

I've posted some projects for my Dollshe/Dollstown hybrid on different threads here, particularly their project journal and "What are you sewing for your BJD?"

I probably won't get much done during the work week, especially because I woke up this morning, bright and early (4:30 am) sick, but hopefully (fingers crossed) I'll at least not be sick tomorrow.

I love your doll's accessories and balance beam--so cool, and I'm impressed with how sturdy the balance beam is! Wow!

    28. Thank you to @PeppermintPocky for letting me know about this thread.
I just received my Sara yesterday. This is Krista. I played with her a bit last night and she's really fun. I'm hoping to paint her this weekend. <3

    29. Yay!!! I'm so happy to see you here, @LuckyXIII! :daisy

Krista looks adorable. :XD: Congrats again on getting her! Do you mind if I ask what sort of face-up you're planning for her? (Natural? Fantasy? Etc.) I can't wait to see her painted! :)

Thanks for linking me to your project journals! I love looking through those. :D You did an AMAZING job on that chest mod! WOW. That pleather unitard is cool, too.

I didn't know that the construction for the 1/3 Hujoos was so different! Neat. Thanks for the info. :thumbup And thanks for your kind words on Nomi's accessories! I'm almost done with her high heels and hope to start crafting her satin top hat soon, too. ;)

Sending you get well soon wishes! I hope you're feeling better. :daisy

    30. I'm not quite sure yet. Maybe purple lips, but not sure about the rest. With how flexible she is, I kinda want to make her some kind of fun circus outfit.

    31. @PeppermintPocky

I am feeling a lot better now! And I'm glad you like my chest mod!

I look forward to seeing the top hat!

      @LuckyXIII

Congrats on your new doll! Sara is great! I look forward to seeing a circus outfit!

    32. Several months later... Finally had the weather/motivation to sit outside all afternoon with the dye bucket... The goblin hujoos have arrived to creepity creep creep alongside their fae-overlord:

Um... They didn't come out at all how I envisioned, however I love them.

The guy that looks blue in the photo is actually green. For some reason the camera just can't cope with this particular shade of bluey-green (I've got LPs that are a lighter green, but of the same palette that photograph blue too).

Believe it or not the dye bath was two parts yellow to one part green by ratio! The girl that's turned out black was in a bath that was two parts orange, two parts yellow to one part green... No idea how I ended up with such an intense dark shade there, especially when the dye bath itself was the murky light greeny-brown I'd wanted.

Still, whilst face-ups may not be in these guys futures, since I'm not sure there'd be anything dark enough to make headway against the new colour of the plastic - they do look awesome next to the other mini hujoos:

(And that shade of black is making me rethink my stance on not picking up one of the giant hujoos - black cat head on a brown body would make an excellent fantasy version of Bast)

      • x 5
    33. What a fun bunch you have :D

    34. @Vetinari

Regardless of whether they came out as intended, I love the color intensity! They look really good!

    35. Happy to hear you're feeling better! :daisy I'll be sure to share a picture once Nomi has her top hat (or her shoes finish curing, whichever comes first, lol).

Your little Hujoos look awesome! :D I'm sorry they didn't turn out the colors you were hoping, though. :sweat I particularly love the red eyes paired against that black!

Oh yes!! :XD: That sounds awesome!

One thing I've grown to love about my Dana is I'm not nearly as worried about posing her as my resin crew... like, I never would have been brave enough to attempt putting my [insert resin bjd here] above ground on a balance beam, just in fear I'd break them. With Nomi, I'm just like, "Eh, she'll be okay... even if she falls." :XD: That may not be completely accurate, but I certainly feel a lot of "freedom" when handing her.

      • x 2
    36. Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like how they've turned out. They make for quite the striking pair, if not quite the murky shades of the Labyrinth goblins that I was aiming for!

(Vaguely contemplating tribal warpaint for the little guys, but I'll think about it a bit more)

But yeah, that's another vote for iDye Poly working on all sorts of plastics that are otherwise resistant to dyeing - however you may want to 1) make the baths a bit less concentrated than I did, 2) use a sieve so you can fish the parts out quickly once they get to the right colour (though honestly - one moment they were same old Hujoo off-white, and the next they'd basically gone darker than the dye they were sat in.

      • x 1
    37. I'm almost finished with Nomi's shoes (still have to add some finishing touches) but she begged me to snap a quick photo of her wearing them:

I also made a short 'n simple stop motion animation with her over the weekend using the above shoot, but I can't figure out how to embed a Tumblr video... :sweat Anyway, if interested, here's the video post link.

    38. @PeppermintPocky

Your animation is really cute! Does she want to be a Rockette dancer?

      • x 1
    39. Thank you so much, @americanseamstress! :daisy I had a lot of fun making that animation---so much so I may try working out a longer one of her dancing in some regard.

To answer your question, Nomi would be thrilled to be a Rockette! :D She trained in professional dance during her youth (primarily ballet) but currently has her eyes set on glitzy and glam shows. :XD:

    40. @PeppermintPocky

Ask her how she deals with itchy tutus!

My skin as a child was...unique...but the tutus in my kindergarten ballet gave me actual raised welts! (Not a normal reaction, I know--I still use baby detergent.) I know they're at least horribly itchy for most!

I watched a video on making the professional ones, and the work which goes into them for a couple wearings is crazy! Everyone in the industry is so dedicated!

    41. [IMG]

This is Kazumi, she's my Hujoo Dana hybrid with the Obitsu Haruka head. WS best matched the ABS and while my other two have faceups... She's the 'action' one I don't mind taking places that might ruin faceups or fog up sealants. She's also the first hybrid I ever owned and my first MSD girl. I've had her about five years now, same as Avalon (got them in the same year)... She's also Avalon's girlfriend character wise.

I love this girl even when she's being a pain in the butt.

(I'm also kind of bummed out Wawa seems to have been discontinued. I wanted to get my hands on one someday since it was so derpeh)

      • x 4
    42. Oh my goodness!!! I'm sorry those tutus gave you welts! :sweat My immune system is out of whack so I get hives, etc. from certain irritants all the time, so I feel your pain (I use baby detergent, too---the standard sort with fragrance makes me uggggggggh)!

I'll have to try to find that video because it sounds very interesting! :D I love learning new things. I agree that the dedication dancers have is so inspiring!

Hi Kazumi! So happy to see you! :daisy

The Obitzu/Hujoo match looks very good! :thumbup

      Here it is:

It wasn't too bad--I just picked up Irish dance instead (they use cardboard wrapped in satin instead of tulle to make the skirts stick out).

      @Arashi Uchiha

I like that combo better than the head on an obitsu!

      @LuckyXIII

      Love those tights!

      • x 2
    44. @PeppermintPocky thank you very much. I wasn't sure if the match would work when I got her but I was glad I went with WS versus NS since it wouldn't have matched.

@americanseamstress Thank you! >w< She's my action girl and I love her for it. I actually like this body better then the 40cm Obitsu.

    45. I made Nomi a bowtie so I thought I'd share a quick photo! Now I need to finish her top hat, lol.

OOOO! Go Krista! GO! Look at her rock that pose! I can't help but think of this awesome video whenever I see her. <3

A very belated (I'm sorry!) thank you for the awesome tutorial! I really appreciate you sharing it with me! :daisy

    46. That bowtie is so adorable! I love how tiny and crisp it is!

I look forward to seeing the hat!

    47. I have a Hujoo Freya. She was not my first BJD but she was my first face up. I got a practice head and later got the body with the Phoebe head. (I haven't done a face up for the mouse yet). Here are some pics of her in her kitchen with her pearls...she's a very fancy girl.

What a cute dress! That bow makes it adorable!

    49. @americanseamstress Thanks! The outfit is a commercial one, for Blythe I think.

I just love all the dolls on this thread. I wonder if we are more willing to take chances with these than with our larger resin dolls? I am inspired by looking at the pics. I want to do an Egyptian style cat, maybe all in gold or the dark blue lapis like you dyed yours. I am going to have to do some experimenting!:evilplot:

    50. @SunshineBlue I have an Anubis with the mini-pinscher Hujoo from MimiWoo--I don't have him with me now, but I'll have to take some pictures! I gold leafed him with gold leaf powder mixed in airbrush media

    52. @SunshineBlue

Gold leaf always turns out super cool. Most of my resin BJDs aren't fantasy enough, so gold leaf would be a bit strange, but I never regret it.

    53. My very first "BJD" was a Hujoo Berry. She was awesome, posed well....until I dressed her and put on her wig. Then she'd flop all around uncooperatively most of the time (plus I tried restringing her a few times). After months (probably longer) of her sitting around not doing anything, I finally decided it was time for her to move on. I probably wouldn't get another, at least with that style of head - I've found that I like a bit more proportion in the dolls I own. BUT I still admire many of Hujoo's sculpts and I love seeing owner pictures!

I've been eyeing the other more proportioned 1/6 scale dolls though...so maybe one day! Plus the 1/4 and 1/3 dolls are already on my wish list. :XD:

I'm so excited though! I finally was able to get a Hujoo Dana! I literally just bought her tonight, and she'll be shipping out soon! I'm hoping that her body can be shared between two of my floating heads plus the Dana head. Hopefully the proportions will work! :D
