Anime/Manga discussion

Aug 3, 2015

    1. I honestly would've preferred them ending this season with a bigger bang and maybe top it off with an OVA... I don't know how I feel about a second season, or Victor going back to skating, and coaching Yuri at the same time. On the other hand, I absolutely loved them skating to Stammi Vicino duet. I'm hoping they'll release the full version in the future, without the end credits all over it... Maybe as a part of the DVD? I'd also like to see Phichit On Ice happening. Lol.

So, Yuri goes to Russia to train under Victor... That means they live together now? Just like Yurio moved in with Lilia to train? One can only hope... :whee:

    2. I was not expecting Viktor to decide to return to competitive skating. I didn't expect JJ to get 3rd over Otabek. I feel bad for Chis who, with Viktor out, was so close the previous year but was outdone by younger skaters. And OMG Yurio, being such a young skater, became such a force to be reckoned with! I have so many feelings for all the characters.
I was expecting Yuuri to get silver or bronze and glad he used it to motivate himself to keep skating. Viktor figured out how to motivate Yuuri correctly.
      And yeah THAT ENDING!

    3. I too think Otabek deserved the bronze more than JJ did. JJ messed up his short program badly and even the free program, he didn't start too well, yet he scored enough points to beat Otabek? Doesn't make sense. If Yuri hasn't messed up his short program, he would've won that gold. It was still painful to see him lose to Yurio with less than a point difference. But I guess he had to finish with a silver so they can make a second season. Yurio did deserve the gold though. He skated beautifully.

    4. At the moment I'm waiting for the Little Witch Academia serie to start but that may take a while...I'm watching Kuromukuro on Netflix (I'm so in love with the main "couple" there) and I just finished re-watching Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun (I always laugh so much when I watch it, it is rather brilliant). I just can't wait for the new Cardcaptor Sakura anime, but that won't air before 2018 T__T

    5. I'm reading a few right now. Food Wars, Fairy tail, Akatsuki No Yona, Skip Beat, Oresama Teacher, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next Card Captor Sakura chapters.

    6. Can we please remember to use Spoiler blocking when posting info about new series episodes? Or, you could make a new thread just for a specific show and label it as "Full of Spoilers" so people know to stay clear.

I totally had to avoid this thread until I watched the last episode of YOI. Not that is had huge spoilers, but it is such a nice thing to enjoy the end of a season without knowing what will happen!

I just finished watching Mob Psycho 100, which I really enjoyed. And now I have started Knights of Sidonia.
I have an enormous backlist of things I want to watch but I am having such a hard time prioritizing them. If I post the huge list here, can anyone give me some pointers or recs?

    7. I'm currently reading Winter Woods and it is BEAUTIFUL! I got my friend into it too because of how much the characters resemble ball jointed dolls! The artist is absolutely amazing at what she does. Also the story is just as great, I hope any of you are able to check it out! It is a web-comic and every single page is fully coloured. GORGEOUS art!

    8. I adore the Kitchen Princess series, and I just read Sweetness and Lightning 1 today. Can't WAIT to read the next one. I'm making one of the recipes (fried chicken) tonight. I had to buy sake to make it. What a weeb. ^_^

    9. Hey is anyone hyped for 'Dive!!' ??

I'm so excited since the novels and the movie were so great; still can't believe that they're making an anime adaptation after all this time!

Also since people were comparing it to Free, Dive were actually made 8 years before Free was even a thing! (`ロ´)
And it's about diving not swimming, duh (-_-#)

    10. Wow, it's been ages since I last posted here, and I'm STILL on the hunt for a new anime to watch! I don't know why, but I just can't seem to really sink my teeth into anything other than Attack on Titan, and it's taking sooooo long for the full second season to finally come to Netflix! Admittedly, it's been so long since we're actually going back and re-watching the first season. My husband and I keep trying to find something new, but ugh. Nothing is sticking. So far we've tried (and given up on):

      Sword Art Online
      Death Note
      Cowboy Bebop
      Samurai Champloo
      Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood
      Psycho Pass
      Deadman Wonderland
      Bleach
      Yu Yu Hakusho
      Seven Deadly Sins
      Magi: The Adventures of Sinbad
      Our Lie in April
      Vampire Knight
      Glitter Force
      Yuri on Ice

And a few others we streamed on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon but were so stupid I don't even remember their names. The closest we came to something I actually enjoyed was called K, but the half-naked cutesy/sexy catgirl sort of put a huge damper on my overall enjoyment.

I don't know why I'm so determined to find a new anime when I can't seem to like anything we try. I think it's just such a nostalgic thing for me, and I admittedly do love the aesthetic, so I keep on trying to seek out something when Attack on Titan keeps leaving me hanging for new stuff. So I'll try asking again, fingers crossed, any suggestions?

    11. @InkyBear
Have you tried HunterXHunter? It's more like YuYu Hakusho than SnK, but it is a really good show. Not sure if it'd be up your alley though. I'm also pretty partial to Boku no Hero Academia, though that's not anything like SnK either. (Nothing's really like SnK...the new season is great!)

I wont go into too much detail with them, but Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and Fune wo Amu are both artistic, slightly dramatic, slice of life anime that really caught me by surprise. I didn't think I'd like them as much as I have been! (I haven't finished either of them yet though.) Check them out if you like obscure Japanese theatre and making dictionaries, respectively. :thumbup

I've personally just started this new anime called Atom: The Beginning, which is apparently the lrequel to Astro Boy, and it's really good! It started in April and new episodes are still coming out. If anyone like slice of life with awesome robots and some fighting and a dash of mystery, I'd definitely give it a shot. (Plus the art style is just gorgeous, very nostalgic but revamped.) I just clicked on it randomly and got completely hooked! (I watched the first eight eps in a day...can't wait for more! I'm not how many eps this season will have though.)

    12. have you made up your mind to find just anime? There is more manga that you might like if you're looking for something like attack on titan. One amazing example is The Promised Neverland. I won't say anything as I might spoil the plot, but think of it as Death Note meets Attack on Titan with a dash of Shibatora (which btw is a great show too. I really recommend it for it's realistic portrayal of youth problems in Japan) in an orphanage setting.

For anime, I can recommend Mawaru Penguindrum. Which is weird. Really, very weird. I don't even know how to describe it because it's just so weird. The great thing is it's not just a bunch of strange things jumbled up together, the story is told really well and there is a reason behind everything that happens. There is a ton of foreshadowing, but it is not predictable in the slightest and will definitely surprise you. Some of the strange events are also symbolic, but it's better to not get caught up thinking what it all meant.

That's some that I can think of, maybe you can tell us what kind of shows you're looking for? (Like genre and themes)

    13. @KiyoshiSenshi Thank you! I haven't heard of any of those except HunterxHunter, so I'll definitely put them on the list to check them out. I feel like at this point I'm pretty much open to trying out just about anything!

@Ruerie I really prefer anime over manga since it's something my husband like to do together. We usually wind down our day by watching a few episodes of a show, but we're running out of shows because I'm so picky. Most of the non-anime shows I watch are all pretty similar (Law & Order, Criminal Minds, etc.), and I guess I'm searching for that same vibe. Serious, mature, action, women who actually wear clothes and don't speak like little girls or sex queens. I dislike "quirky" characters like the lead guys from Trigun and Seven Deadly Sins. I don't necessarily like gore or horror either, but I don't mind a little for the sake of an excellent plot. I don't like comedy, slapstick or sexy fanservice. I admit, I also don't like ugly animation either :XD:

    14. @InkyBear

Reading your description of what anime/shows you enjoy, I thought immediately of Naoki Urusawa's Monster. It's a crime thriller set in the real world (Germany in the 80s or 90s I believe), very serious and mature in tone, without wacky shenanigans or fanservice. The manga is still one of my favorite written pieces of all time, comic or otherwise, and the anime is essentially a shot-for-panel remake. It's twisty and sometimes frightening, but it's very very good. The animation isn't quite the usual anime aesthetic, it's a bit more realistic, but perhaps you'd enjoy that? I highly recommend it. I won't describe the plot in detail because to do so would be to ruin a wonderful early spoiler, but if it seems a little dry at first, give it an episode or two to drop the bomb and get things really going.

As for what anime/manga I'm currently into outside of that: boy am I behind on new releases LOL. The only anime I'm keeping up with this season is Kado: the Right Answer, and that's only at the insistence of a friend. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I'm so out of the loop! The only other anime I've watched recently were Ajin on netflix and 91 Days (recommended!). Manga-wise I still keep up with Attack on Titan/SnK, but I haven't caught up with the second season of the anime... since I've already read it. Whoops. I guess they'll be getting to the really good stuff now, though.

I also keep up with Ao no Exorcist (it's cute but heartfelt, and I love all of the characters) and the Baccano! light novels. And really anything by Ryohgo Narita. Also Gangsta and Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, but those two are mostly because they're very pretty and I'm a sucker for things about organized crime. And that might be it. I feel like I have no time for anime anymore. :(

I really like stuff that's more grounded in reality, even when there are fantastical elements (Ao no Exorcist is a weird exception I guess?) and things that make the viewer think. Or, you know, just stuff about organized crime, because as I said, I'm a huge sucker for it. So if anyone has any recs, I'd be happy to hear them!

I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations, but I just had to agree with you about 91 Days! I generally don't like realistic anime (or drama, or organized crime, or pretty much anything like 91 Days) but I decided to try the anime because of some rec lists I'd seen, and I was hooked from the first episode! That ending though...it was so well done. (And I loved the opening. :kitty1)

    16. @KiyoshiSenshi
Ahhh I'm so glad more people have seen it! It's so hard to find any traces of fandom or anything, not that I really do the whole "fandom" scene, but still. Some fanart or merch would be cool. Anyway, it's nice to see someone else loved it! And man, I could write an essay on how well done that ending was. So perfect.

    17. Hello!
I just finished season 2 of Bungou Stray Dogs and it's become one of my favorite animes!! I actually started the manga right away after haha. I love Dazai so much <3
I am also reading this new manga called The Case Study of Vanitas AND I AM OBSESSED WITH IT! If you are looking for a new manga please please read this one! It needs more followers and I need more people to talk to about it!! Hehe
I also need to catch up on Boku no Hero!!

    18. @momoqt
Ahh, I need to finish BSD! I watched the first season and like the first four of the second season, I really love it. (Akutagawa is my favorite! But I love Dazai too, and pretty much everyone else. :XD:)
And you totally should catch up on BNHA! This season was really good, though I still have one or two episodes to watch.

In other news, I've recently gotten back into Yowamushi Pedal... I ended up getting swept away from it about ten episodes into Grande Road, so I need to finish that and start on the Next Generation! I'm pretty psyched about the new animation. I can't wait to have some free time next week and binge it all!

    19. Is somebody...anybody...watching Devilman Crybaby?!

    20. Just gonna drop by and ask...anyone else bummed about Dragon Ball Super ending this March after the Tournament of Power?! Arghhhh I’m so sad!! At least we’re getting a movie later this year but the announcement for the series hiatus came as a surprise to me.
      *cricket noises*
Alrighty, back to my hole in the wall...

Come on, fams! Where my fellow Vegeta fans at?

    21. I powered through all of Devilman Crybaby in one sitting, and have since watched all of the older Devilman OAVs I could find because that wasn't enough! Hell, I'd probably start trying to watch the old Devilman tv show, but it 1.) doesn't have Ryo and 2.) has a happy ending and those two things are absolutely the antithesis of why I love Devilman so much.

Devilman no Uta, however, is such a banger.

    22. I'd be happy to have a full translation of Swan, even if I have to buy the ones I already have the company went bankrupt after 15 of 21 volumes :(

Otherwise I have all of the first run of the Sailor Moon translations, Princess Princess, and Dolls. Video wise Gatchaman (I grew up with Battle of the Planets), Robotech (the Macekered version of everything), odds and ends of 90s Sailor Moon, and catching up on the new translation.

I recommend They Were 11 in any form you can find it.

    23. I used to watch a lot of anime, now not so much I mostly just watch Miyazaki movies over and over...

Did anyone watch Shamanic Princess?? So weird.

    24. Oh god, the whole soundtrack is just fantastic. I'm trying to space it out though because my boyfriend lives a two hour plane ride away in Toyota and we watch it together on skype. I'm really glad netflix decided to produce this because with all that money, the creators were really able to do a great job (though they really couldn't have just hired a foreigner for Ryo's english speaking parts?? there's so many of us here!!!)

    25. I’m currently watching The Ancient Magus Bride, Food Wars, Elegant Yoki Apartment Life,My Love Story and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

    26. I've really only gotten into anime relatively recently, and of the few I've tried I really enjoyed Death Note and Another. I'm working on Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with my boyfriend right now (just started part 4) and it's been my favorite by far!

    27. @lillievon OMG there's a SHOW of Ancient Magus's Bride? Holy cow! I'm loving the Manga. Can't wait to watch that!

      @cocobash1019 I'm enjoying Jojo, too!

    29. Ongoing manga I'm following is just Houseki no Kuni and Made in Abyss. Working my way through Trigun Maximum for the second time as well. Vaguely thinking about rereading Sailor Moon due to the Cosmos movies that just came out. I'm not sure which manga I completed most recently... maybe Beastars?

For anime, I'm currently obsessed with Trigun Stampede and watched it 3 times lol. Also watched the 98 version and Dororo recently. Waiting for the final-final bit of Attack on Titan to come out, along with any news on the Trigun Stampede "Final Phase" (season 2?) and Beastars season 3.

    30. I'm not World's Biggest Otaku, but I'll dabble from time to time. Earlier this year I marathoned Dragon Ball Z (had to watch 'em all before my Crunchyroll free trial ended!). I looooved Dragon Ball Z as a kid, and I'm glad it still (mostly) holds up! As a kid I was crazy about Android 18 (and also Krillin, and also Trunks, and also Goku...), but as an adult, I found that Android 16's story really resonated with me! On the flip side, Cell is a lot less scary to me now... his little beak mouth is so silly, totally ruins any gravitas he has whenever he opens his mouth

Recently, @cobaltconduct's Chobits cosplay inspired me to seek out another anime. Ended up with Ranma 1/2, because it's streaming free on Tubi TV (or for the price of a VPN, if you're outside the US). Very silly, but fun characters, and surprisingly heavy on martial arts! I can definitely see why there was so much Ranma fan art floating around the internet back in the day, the whole "sex change" thing is real cat nip for a certain kind of person :nosebleed
