Angel of Dream (AOD) 1/4 size discussion thread Part 1

May 15, 2007

    1. I'll have to get a photo of what I'm talking about with the headcap. I guess it's not as 'common' a thing with dolls from the company as I'd thought it must be, given the previous owner didn't mention anything about it being 'odd'.

If no one has suggestions to a body, it's no big. I think he'll just wind up on a RS body, unless I stumble across something I like better. ^-^

I really am taken by this head! And I know the person I got it from is the only one on DoA that has shared any photos of the sculpt, since I TRIED to find other owner pics, and failed spectacularly! I'm now seriously thinking about giving the company as a whole another look, to see if there are any other sculpts that will fit planned, but not already purchased, characters.

    2. I know what you're talking about; both of my headcaps are slightly larger than the heads, so they overlap a tiny bit. I've thought about dremeling them down, but so far it has not been an issue so I haven't bothered.
I assume that they must use the same head cap for all the head molds in that size, but maybe it's done that way on purpose? I am still new to such things!

    3. The only low-priced MSD body I can think of aside from RS and AoD is 5Star Doll, Mint on Card sells them. I haven't heard much about them, but they look nice.

    4. Mint On Card also sells Illusion Spirit dolls and an MSD body is $190. I can't speak of the resin match, but the boy bodies are not very defined. They do, however, stand like rocks straight out of the box (I have an IS boy in grey). MoC also is a dealer for Island Dolls and a boy body is $180. I've no experience with them, but I've heard from others that they are a good product. Impldoll also has bodies that look really good for $138.

    5. I have a friend that has an ID msd and she's very nice. Personally I have two of their Tinies...they are excelent little posers and the resin is very nice.

    6. Hello I'm out of lurking just for a moment I just received AOD Chi yesterday, was supose to be white, but they told me I order Y-normal...doesn't even look Y-normal to me? Anyway I'm hoping to get some photos up later of box opening. Until then if you'd like I did do a video box opening :)

@Irondog: So are the head caps supose to have magnets in them??? or is that something you modded all of mine have the hooks in the top of the headcap, which to me are a pain when I'm wanting to unstring or change eyes.

note on head caps...On my Rao and Wang Zi they are slightly larger, but like said previously don't impact wig or anything..I think my new guy's is pretty good. And I guess I should name my new guy soon...lol

    7. Congratz on the new doll! He's very handsome. Will whatever color he IS still work for dying if you still plan to do it? And that's really neat that they sent not one, but was that two pairs of shoes? Epic! What company was that again that you got him from?

    8. Kitty Blue - even your new one has the hook style headcap? :? I ordered my boy over a year ago and he has magnets. Much more convenient...

    9. Yep he sure does...l I believe he was a very long stocked doll, because they had told me that the Yo they had in stock was white not the Chi that I ordered. And that the Yo has yellowed so I'm assuming maybe this was before they added magnets??? I was really hoping he had magnets...maybe at some point I can put some in myself.
Ledolls is where I ordered I saw someones signature a while back and took a look and kept going back to stare at the white Chi they had instock (or so I thought..lol)

I don't think it will make a difference in dyeing since I'm dyeing him black...or I was going to..now I'm indecisive. Has anyone dyed a AOD before and if so how did it turn out??

Yes 2 pairs of shoes!...I was very excited, now I don't have to order any for my other AOD boy.

    10. My Rao was old enough or long enough in stock that she had a resin hook, too. Be careful, older AOD doll owners. Frequent head removal WILL put stress on this hook. My poor girl's snapped off one day in between outfit changes. Fortunately I have smart, creative friends, and we were able to modify her to have magnets. Rare earth magnets are your friend. So the modification is totally do-able, it just won't look so professional from the inside, but really, who sees inside her head except when I'm changing her clothes anyway? XD

    11. Kitty Blue: Yay! Happy to see you in here! Can't wait to see the box opening for your new doll!

I took my head, and put it on my RS boy's body last night...with a little modding of the neck, it should work out pretty well, if that's the route I choose to go to get him a body.

    12. Kitty Blue: I ordered Moswen (Chi in tan) over 2 years ago directly from AoD. It was during a free-head event and I was sent a Min head in tan (which was the wrong skin). Both have magnets. When I got the skin tone sorted out with AoD and they sent me the Min head in NY, it had magnets.

My other AoD boy, Kijika (Adonis) was actually a limited doll that was a collab between LE Doll and AoD, and he has magnets in his head as well.

All 4 head caps fit flush to their heads. Jaiseki (NY Min) has magnet issues with them being counter-sunk too deeply to be effective in keeping said head cap on, but his wig does a decent enough job of keeping it from flying off.

    13. hey you..long time no see...lol. Funny thing is I did the opposite took my RS head and put it on my new body...I'm thinking with the body I have (which I was told was Y-Normal) it may be possible to blush to match a normal skin RS, at least my Ariel head looked to almost match my new AOD boy. That was why I ordered white(or thought I did), to see how the match would be.

@irondog: huh?? I wonder why mine has the hook and no magnets then unless it is older than 2 yrs???

So I haven't heard back from ledolls after my last email...do you think sending a message to AOD would do any good?? I really was wanting the white skin doll just in case I decided not to dye him. I'm not even sure if ledolls is even a rep for them anymore or not...they don't have a whole lot on their site just a few in stock dolls and only 1 other AOD instock.

Does anyone by chance have a white and Y-normal AOD doll that I could see a pic of just curious what color I really did get. Thanks

    14. Well...it looks like my head has just moved from becoming a 'he' back to being a 'she'! Friday I'll be paying for her original body!

Now...to decide what to do about her broken fingers...she has 3 broken...I THINK 1 is completely missing, while the other two have been glued back on...so...do I just mod the hand to make her character missing the fingers...or switch her hand(s) out for those of another doll I already own who was GOING to have her hands modded to have skeletal fingers? Guess it'll depend on the resin match once the body is here. Either way, I'm totally EXCITED!

    15. It's been ages since I've posted in an AoD thread, so...

      Valandil says hi!

He's a You; I've had him about three years now, give or take a couple months. He was my first doll (not counting three Obitsu 27cm) and has put up with a lot of ignorance on my part. XD

Yeah, he has the old head cap, too. I know exactly what some of you are talking about, where the headcap is larger than his head. >> Seen here, some. He has the hook, too, so I almost NEVER remove it completely. I've found that I can just pop it down enough to reach inside for eye positioning or what have you. It take two people to restring him because of that damn hook, though. >.< The resin on the sides of his head cap, where it slots on the sides, is almost translucent it's so thin, so there will be no modding there. I don't mind so much, though, it's all easily hidden by his wig. Although, I will say, people who've never seen that style headcap find it very odd. XD

Having not encountered many (any?) other AoD in person, besides my friends Chi, I have to ask: is it common for them to have finicky elbows and knees? Val had terrible problems with his left arm and leg going out of whack after I restrung him until I helpful woman at a convention turned the ball in each of those joints upside down. ^.^;; It's possibly they'd been that way before, too, but I tried to put everything going the same direction when I did the stringing. Silly me, should have left him contrary. XD

    16. My Rhianna has her head modded for magnets, and I'll admit, it doesn't look pretty. You're right, the headcap is too thin to drill in and add magnets. What we did was find just the right spots to add small rare earth magnets with white epoxy. The epoxy holds well to the resin, so there is no fear of losing it, and it adds to the head on the inside, so it doesn't show on the outside. It leaves a little less room for finger maneuvering, but with the hook that snapped off, there's plenty of room to replace eyes or shift the hook so I can pop her head off with little effort. I need to restring her, honestly. She's so loose and floppy right now...

As for knees and elbows, I know that Rhianna has weird knees. The wear on one is different than the other, so one knee bends with the joint staying closer to the thigh, and the other bends so that the joint stays closer to her calf. It's infuriating when I have her in shorts/short dresses and the linke that shows her knees. I have never figured out how to fix it.

    17. Reading AoD's as floppy has me looking at the words strange. XD Val came to me strung so tightly that his left knee was always out of joint unless I purposely locked it in place and kept checking it. I left it for over two years because his left side is supposed to have nerve damage anyway, but still... It's only recently that I've loosened up the legs elastics. I've been told proper sueding will help him a lot. ^.^;;

I know exactly what you mean about the knees. If I have him without long pants, I have to position his knees so that they look the same. Maybe sueding would help that, too? Hold the joints in place better? Is your girl sueded?

    18. Well, Rhianna is only floppy because of how very long I have had her without restringing her. I think I haven't even futzed with her stringing for over a year. And I'm a "handle the dolls frequently" kind of girl, so she's always getting her clothes changed, etc. The SD my fiancee owns came strung so tightly that her knee was broken and we had to have them send us a second leg. Floppy is not the natural state of the AOD.

And as for Rhianna's knees, well, I can't even position her to get them to look the same. There are notches, and they aren't even, you know? No, Rhianna isn't sueded. I've considered it a few times, but given the notches in the knees I'm not sure it would help.

    19. Ouch, good point. Her knees are notched? O.o That doesn't sound good... Are the balls actually chipped? I mean, is it something you could get from AoD, or fix with epoxy? Or is it part of the design?

    20. Any apoxy would be visible, so that wouldn't work. She's fine the way she is, it just means that her knees look a little... unique. She stands and everything find when I stand her, so it doesn't actually harm posing. I couldn't really describe it to say if it's chipped or on purpose, but if it's anything, it's probably worn. I bought her new from a local dealer that probably had her in stock for quite some time, taken out to display at local events and conventions, so goodness only knows if she came from factory like that or not. But it has been something I have dealt with for some time now. I knew nothing of dolls when I purchased her, so I have no clue if she was always like this or not. *shrugs* One of these days I'll take pictures (probably when I unstring/clean her) to show what I mean, and I'll be sure to post them here.

    21. Kitty Blue - I have 1 Wang-zi with a hook, 3 others with magnets, and one of the magnet girls has the lip on the head cap! Magnets are so much easier to work with. I don't think I'll ever change Aidan's eyes again! That cap is hooked on to stay!

    22. agreed I hate having to put eyes in my new guy and my girl. I had to do a faceup on her recently so had to take the cap off to do it...blech...haven't put her head back on yet, just finished her head now need to work on her body. My Chi is strung very tight so that will be great fun when I take him apart to dye him. Wish I had magnets.

    23. I've gotten so used to my You's headcap, that taking the eyes in and out is never a problem. XD I just pop it down and it rests against the back of his head/neck until I'm ready to pop it back up.

Of course, I do all faceup work on him with his head attached, consequently. I have only removed his head ONCE in the three years I've had him and it took me AND my boyfriend to get it on and off safely.

So, yes, those hooks are a PAIN. Magnets would be nice... Kendrah, could you show a picture of how you added the magnets to yours?

    24. Sure thing! I'll see if I can steal a minute to snap some pictures tonight. It's not the cleanest addition, but since I'm the only one that ever sees it, I figure it doesn't matter. And it makes things SO much easier. I'll try to snap some pics of her knees, too, while I'm at it.

    25. Okay, I promised pictures, so here they are! XD First off, I'll note that Rhianna looks yellower in these pictures than she really is. Not sure why. I've got to master my photography skills...

I'll first show you the divot on my poor girl's head. We aren't quite sure what caused it... but it has ALWAYS been there, ever since I bought her from a local dealer. I bought her "new" but the dealer had been showing her for... I don't know how long. And they claimed they lightly buff/sand the top of doll heads and use velcro dots to keep wigs on. So... I'm not sure if she was flawed, or if they damaged her... I was too dumb at the time to know better.

Oh, and her head cap DOES sit flush to her head. It's my sweetie's SD AoD girl whose head cap isn't flush...

      Anyway.

Now, for the head cap mod. My friend used some sort of apoxy (I can ask him which later if anyone is curious to know what kind) to attach rare earth magnets to the inside of Rhianna's head. He used some sort of hand held sander (dremmel?) to carefully smooth the sides of the apoxy, and flatten the magnet and apoxy so the head would sit flush. I'm sure someone with a little more patience to put on the apoxy and who takes more care with it won't have to do as much sanding as he did.

      [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

And here is the issue I am having with Rhianna's knees:

      [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    26. Ooo, thank you for the pics! :D As for the knees... The second picture looks like the notch was intentional. O.o It reminds me somewhat of the joint lock notches on my RS. But, wow, I can see why they frustrate you. That would drive me bonkers.

    27. They really DO look intentional to me, which is the worst part, as they intentionally made them... uneven. Those notches are the only thing I can assume is causing the problem...

    28. I just sent payment for my girl's body! Here's hoping the seller can ship soon. ^-^ I can't wait to work on her. ^-^

    29. So, assuming nothing else goes wrong for the seller, I should have my body by next Friday! I am beyond excited!

    30. have you restrung her? I have those knee notches in my guy Watanuki and had problems with one of his knees after I restrung him...only found out a couple weeks later that I put the knee peanut in upside down. ^_^;

    31. ... she has been restrung at least once. But were the notches not supposed to be there, then? I need to restring her again. I guess I could fool with the knee peanut. I'm just worried that now that they're notched, I'm not going to be able to fix her... She has been like this for over a year, now...

    32. Val's knee and elbow peanuts on his left side had to be put in the opposite direction from his right side. It was the only way we the girl who helped me later could get his joints to lock right. Maybe yours are similarly contrary? The only problem they have is when they sit down, right?

    33. Yup, she only has the problem when she is sitting/knees are bent. She stands just fine. I'll have to see about restringing her and switching one of the peanuts. Thanks!

    34. What a gorgeous photo. She's a beautiful doll. Is she a RAO?

    35. Carol: Who are you asking? My girl is a Rao, but since the last pictures I put up of her hardly showed her in a flattering way, I assume you're referencing a different picture?

    36. Speaking of pictures, I WILL be posting one with Val's new faceup tonight, whether I get to paint the tilak on or not. And tomorrow--- "Traveling Gnome Photoshoot"! :O

    37. Started on my girl's wig tonight...it's going to be a dreadlock wig, and it's taking FOREVER! I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow, though, as sewing the dreads t othe cap goes pretty fast, it's MAKING the dreads that's taking so long!

    38. Ayas-Shadow: wow, yup, I've heard making dolly dreads is really tedious, too *__* I applaud your patience!
Mercedes:...travelling gnome, you say..? I wanna see! haha!
Kendrah: if changing the position of the knee peanut doesn't work, I sure hope you don't needa sand down that notch or anything...Good luck :D

on another note, I made a trench coat for my Wang Zi and will post a picture next time...

    39. I actually REALLY enjoyed making the dreads, and can't wait to start on her next wig...it just REALLY makes my hands hurt, and my wrists ache. My wrists aching is the only reason I didn't make more dreads, to start her second wig, today! I finished the first, and I REALLY like it! I'll try and get photos at some point this 'weekend', but it being a holiday here and all...well...we're pretty much booked with away from the house, non dolly friendly, stuff!

    40. Ayas-Shadow: ahh, I see :O sometimes, time away from doll projects is a good thing, have fun :D

    41. I keep lurking in this thread enjoying all the spam! :) I will be able to officially join very soon! I'm expecting my Qing boy home any day next week! I've always ADORED the sculpt but I can never get enough spam of it. :( This boy is going to be a PROJECT...I only have a vague idea of what I may want to do with him. If anyone has Qing spam while I am waiting to complete him that would be AWESOME! :D

    42. I have only Aod body with Mayu head )

Its my new doll and her wig now not at home...

    43. Ooh, she's cute! LOL, AoD dolls have nipples of doom...the ones on the 1/3 scale boy body just crack me up. They're HUGE...

      I haven't spammed in a while. Here's Robin facepalming. :)

      Full set here.

    44. I sometimes forget the girls have abs, too :O I like x)

    45. Ayas-Shadow> Can't wait to see the wigs. ^_^

      solitary agent> Cute story! :D

So, I took a couple pictures once I got Val back together, but was prevented from driving around town for my planned shoot. :/ nd then, when I uploaded the pics... it was to Facebook only and not to ImageShack. Doh!

I'll try to have them up tonight or tomorrow. I'm such a procrastinator...

    46. Mercedes: If my girl's body comes in today, I'll have some photos of her in her first wig to share! And...I know at least one person over in the BBB and RS mini thread that uses Facebook to host the photos she posts on here...not sure HOW she does, just that she does...And I've started hosting mine on my Deviant Art photography account (since a lot of what I post here winds up on there eventually anyway) To do that, I just right click the image and select 'copy image location', then paste that into the window that's brought up when you use the Insert Image option when posting here on DoA. Facebook might work the same way.

Edit: New body came today! My RS Mei girl stole it! So my girl (still has no name...bad me) is keeping the temp body I'd put her on, a Garden of Dolls Nabi Kiss body, that the Mei HAD been using. I like her on it. ^-^

So here's a photo of her new, dreadlock wig! [IMG]

Now to just decide what I want to do to enhance her face-up...I know a facial tattoo is happening...and some piercings...just not sure WHAT for the tat, or WHERE for the other! Oh...and her lips are going to get darkened, too. Possibly her eyes...

    47. Wow. I use to follow this thread until I sold my girl...But I have returned to spam a new girl I received from a trade! She's an AoD Fei, with no name yet. But she's going to become a Harujuku girl. Currently she's wearing temporary clothes till I find more suitable one for her! :D

    48. :D Aw she looks really adorable like that

    49. Ayas-Shadow> Ooo, neat wig! I like the colors. :3

Penguin-chan> I second that she's adorable. XD What clothes do you have planned for her?

    50. I got my AOD doll last week, and I was quite surprised when I opened him.

1: His body was a LOT more detailed than I had expected, and the faceup also looked pretty good compared to what I've seen on the other molds. Good for 180$.

2: His face was just as gorgeous as they posted on the page, but I honestly think that AOD could do a better job when taking photos of their dolls. Luckily, he didn't have the long jawline that the AOD dolls tend to have (in my view)

3: Overall, I think that he is one of the better molds of AOD, and they are really getting better at their dolls, so if you look long enough, you might find some that are really pretty.

    51. Ayas-Shadow: ooh, looks like the work paid off~ hrmm, I can see her with lip rings...but wow, there really ARE a lot of possibilities shed look good with. Is that..elf-ish ears? I never noticed Bing Sheng had that kind of ears :O
Penguin-chan: I like that style~ The clothes really do suit her!
SuperSmudi: congrats! They really do have that issue with their shop pictures, but I, too, was pleasantly surprised when I got mine :aheartbea your Shajia looks so sweet~

    52. Congrats SuperSmudi! :D He's a very sweet boy! I got my boy's body yesterday and I also have to agree that it's a LOT nicer in person! :D Hopefully his head will arrive tomorrow. He'll be blank for a while but I just want him home already! :)

    53. Hi! I guess I just need reassurance, but my Li Ge was ordered 5/24, and he's been stuck in USorda (whatever that is) for over a week. I can't wait for him to arrive, and I'm getting nervous that he'll be stuck in customs forever! Does it always take so long when you order directly from AOD?

    54. Does anyone have any pictures of AOD Yu Luo? I'm thinking of getting him on a female body (waiting for another head event while I make money) but I'm not sure if it's just the company ones that make him look girly. I want to know what I'll be getting into.

      Thanks!
      Cattya

    55. Hehee, I have that same bench! :D Hobby Lobby, right?

Super Smudi, your boy is really cute. I know what you mean about the long jawline on most of the sculpts...some people have said my boy has "too much chin" but I love him anyway. :sweat

Veracosa, An makes a very pretty girl! I went back and forth between Xun and An myself, I like that sculpt.

    56. Hey everyone, I am wanting to purchased AOD basic tiny Xi doll, just wondered if anyone has purchased this doll and can show me some photos of her? I am new to the hobby and she will be my first so I would love to see her done up in different styles!

Also I found the most gorgeous chair for her on etsy but I am so new I dont know if she will fit nicely?! Here is the link: http://www.etsy.com/listing/35322021/no2-hearts-alice-in-wonderland-series

      <3 Angelina

    57. Just a little drive-by spam for a sculpt I don't think we see enough of. This is Jaiseki (AoD Min, NY) and Sarojin (IS ZhuQing, grey). I think part of the under-ratedness of Min is the lack of decent pics on the AoD site. But that seems to be a theme with them.

    58. I am so eventually getting a Min. Hubby loves the sculpt for a character in one of my (future) photo stories. Same story my girl belongs to, actually. I REALLY need to name her. I also REALLY need to work on her broken hand. The 2 fingers that were were glued back on, I'm going to cover the glue lines with rings. The one that's missing I need to sand and shape the stump that's left, but I'm not sure if I want it to look like it was amputated at some point, or if she was just born without it...hmmm...

Iron_Dog: Why, hello there! We seem to be in a few of the same threads here! I LOVE your 2 in that photo! But then...I find I love pretty much all of your dolls I've seen!

    59. Ayas-Shadow: Hello to you to! I think we do share quite a few threads. And thank you. Credit for their gorgeous face-ups goes to Angel Toast (she's painted the majority of my dolls), but Jaiseki's wig and their clothes were made by me. Jaiseki is also supposed to have wings, but I haven't gotten around to it yet *sighs*.

Min is a really nice sculpt. I've actually got a tan Min head (mix up during a free head event) and should I ever decide to get a body for it, I know he'll be Etireh, a half-dryad character from my Ermine & Bougainvillea novella. I just love AoD. They stand/pose so well and have such personality to their sculpts.
