Joydoll (Instagram, Weibo) has spent around a year designing and refining a "soft cotton body" for BJDs. I'm pretty sure this body would be off-topic for DoA (even though I think the resin parts are ball/socket and strung with elastic), but Joydoll's resin heads and dolls are on-topic and this is adjacent to BJDs. What is this? This is an experimental design for creating a body for resin BJDs that is lightweight and highly posable. The design consists of a sewn "body bag" stuffed with soft stuffing material, and an internal armature that forms the "skeleton" and is the posable part. The armature is similar to the internal skeletons for commercially made plushies and toys. There are cast resin parts: the upper bust/chest area, lower forearms, and calves -- this is where you can attach a normal resin BJD head and hands/feet. I understand there will be elastic stringing to hold those parts in place. Spoiler: more detailed info, advantages/disadvantages Joydoll has made two versions for larger 1/3 "uncle" sized dolls: a 69cm version, and a 75cm version. The advantages: it's lightweight. You can do dynamic action poses with it that would be very hard or impossible to do with a full resin BJD. See links below for posing showcases. The 75cm soft body weighs a bit over 600g, vs. 2 - 2.5 kg for a typical 75cm male resin body. The disadvantages: the light weight is also its own disadvantage. The soft body can't completely support its weight and is dependent on stands for upright action poses (moreso than full resin bodies); it's more sturdy at low center-of-gravity poses. Since the body is soft, it easily deforms, so the posing may not look realistic especially around the joints. It's also not as durable as resin. Joydoll herself says that this is an experimental design, so even though she's prototyped and playtested it extensively, it has its limitations. The purpose of this body is as an add-on for specific use cases, namely: if you're in the habit of doing outdoor photoshoots and want to put your resin doll on an alternate body that's lightweight and easily carried, or if you want to do extreme action poses that wouldn't be possible with full resin. It's not meant to be a substitute/replacement for a normal resin body, Joydoll hasn't designed it as such, and it's one of her major disclaimers. Joydoll has spent about a year refining this soft body and has just opened preorder for it. The preorder goes until end of July 2025. It's available to preorder on her Taobao store, or through her official international-facing dealer, Dollsphere. Please note that this is a DIY kit: you'll have to assemble it yourself and it requires a bit of simple sewing. Joydoll will provide written and video instructions on how to assemble it. Joydoll has also made option parts, to be ordered separately -- static hands (4 different pairs), 5-jointed hands (jointed only at knuckle), static feet (1 pair), jointed feet. These hand/foot parts are all cast resin and are on-topic. Alternatively, you supply your own hands/feet. There's no head available to order - the expectation is that you provide your own doll head. Even if you're not interested in buying, I hope this is interesting to learn about! I've been following Joydoll's progress on this since she first designed it for her own dolls a year ago (she used this soft body to take promo pics of her Jacob/Jose head preorder). I haven't seen anything like this in the BJD space, and I think it's fantastic that a doll sculptor is exploring alternative materials and designs to serve resin BJDs. Just want to raise awareness of this progressive and experimental and very, very cool work.
What a fun idea. It looks like it'll stand without a stand, it just needs support for more dynamic poses which is really interesting. It's something i've considered doing before for vinyl heads but I do wonder if it might be a viable option to DIY something similar to floating heads lol. This really feels like a nice merging of traditional doll design (Porcelain dolls for example) and bjds. Also, a soft body will make certain clothing work a lot better because of SQUISH.
Joydoll has posted preorder info on her Instagram and I've updated links in my OP. I think it is possible to DIY this. One of the prototype videos on Weibo shows the internal armature, I'm told it's the same type of armature used in posable plushies, so you could probably source the basic unit parts from Aliexpress or similar. Joydoll was doing some 3D modelling in the videos, I suspect she may have designed proprietary parts specifically BJDs, especially to attach to the resin bits. Amongst other things, I think a soft body has potential for getting alternate body shapes, such as a plus-sized body type, with all the realistic squish and without the weight/engineering issues that a fully resin doll would have.
This reminds me of those antique leather dolls. The French and German ones from the mid 1800's. A lot of times the head, neck, and chest were bisque, a lot of the jointing in the rest of the body was sewn with leather. Sometimes the lower parts of the arms and legs would also be bisque or wood.
Oh I can't wait to see someone do this with a female body as well, the extra squish would work so well for aesthetical reasons and tight/shaping clothing. Honestly I'd love a kit for a small-ish 1/3 half cloth gal! If nothing else, this is giving me ideas that I know I'm beyond lazy to ever actually make but it's cool to know there would be options.
Firstly, thank you so much @aihre for the very detailed overview with all the links, and for highlighting this very interesting product! I've been following along with the body development and I really want to order one, but I unfortunately didn't get Jacob/Jose (and those are the only two heads I'd want for it). I'm glad I have a month to think about it.
Thank you for posting all this information @aihre! I've been following JoyDoll for a while and have been so interested in this project. I'm not sure the budget will allow, but I'd love to get one just to see how it works. I have actually already had this kind of idea in mind for the one male character I want to shell in doll form. He is supposed to be extremely tall, but I already know I can't handle the bulk and weight of anything over 60cm. I've been saving videos of people making posable art dolls (dragons, etc.) to consult in the future. I hope this is a successful endeavor for JoyDoll - I love to see artists trying new things!
It finally got released! The price is very attractive and that was one of the key variables IMO. The project is so interesting and it opens up a lot of possibilities outside of its main intent as a travel body. I have a couple boy heads I like but I'm not invested enough to buy a full doll. So I enjoy the idea of using this instead. I think it would also allow people who have problems with the sheer weight of uncles to enjoy a doll at that size, or try things out without a major investment.
I saw this and thought it was super cool! It'd be nice to have a doll to cuddle with that wouldn't have hard resin poking me in the ribs or something. I know this isn't a replacement for a resin body, but personally it'd be really cool to see visible mending on this body as it gets older. A whole new type of doll customization!
I saw Joydolls instagram posts about this and it’s interesting to see mixed media for resin dolls showing up again. I vaguely remember people used to make cloth bodies for floating heads. Luts even used to sell some cloth bodies. This feels like a much more refined version of the concept.
I'd like to see some user reviews, I do have a 60cm that needs a replacement body, but I also need it to fit the clothes I've already make for him :/ On the other hand if you have some pattern design and sewing skills any free online tutorial for making a unitard/catsuit is a good start and they still make plastic armature (the kind that looks like beads). For me it would come down to the price and shipping time being better than labor and supplies I pretty much have.
Just wanted to note that I asked Joydoll if they would sell the Jacob/Jose heads again, and the answer was: probably not. So I think I'll pass on the body, since I have no other floating heads of the right size, and hope to see it around here or on social media to admire from afar!
I am tempted to get one, more for the project than out of direct need for a body. I find it a fascinating concept, and maybe I could try to mod existing bodies to work like that, once I've seen in person how the whole thing is assembled. Which is the advantage of a kit, I guess: you get to follow instructions instead of just throwing yourself into a project where you have to figure out everything.
I am getting one just because the potential for posing is insane My dolls will have to share and they'll all get a turn on it Same! I want to see how it is built and see if I can make one myself! ^^
I'm also quite interested in this body, but I'm on the fence because the timing isn't right. I love posing my dolls, and lately I've been leaning hard into doing dynamic action poses with my crew and exploring their potential. I've been having so much fun with this and can see my dolls going far... so I don't know how interested I am right now in a soft body. At this point in time, I'd be getting it more to tinker and understand how Joydoll designed it - I like taking things apart to find out how they work - and less to actually use it for posing. But also, I have a lot of crafty and doll projects on my plate and don't need another one! I am ordering the hand/foot option parts for some of my dolls, but I might give the soft body a miss this time... Joydoll says that if you're interested but hesitant, it's best to hold off buying and wait for owner reviews. I understand that she's paying close attention to units bought in this preorder, and then owner feedback and reviews. She's said on Weibo (specifically the bottom of this post) that if the owner reviews are positive, then she's open to doing a second preorder run for these soft bodies, and I can imagine she'd tinker some more to improve the design and/or offer options such as female bodies. But if the owner reviews are negative, then that's the end of the project and she's unlikely to develop the soft body further. Sadly she's received negative criticism from the Chinese community about her soft body so I think she'll be gauging owner responses very closely. I guess that's the nature of experimental work.
That’s actually a really good idea! I’d like to try that. Buying floating heads is much cheaper than buying an entire doll. I enjoy sewing anyway so I see this as an affordable way to have the types of dolls that I want, in the scale that I want. The possibilities are truly endless with a mixed media project like this.
Okay, I did it, I really wanted to do the crafty part of putting this doll together~ like, it would be so fun to do as a little craft class - if such a thing existed for BJDs. I bought one body and all of the extra parts -I'm planning to put my Volks Diamond boy head on it once it's put together so he doesn't have to borrow another doll's shell. Usually I only buy dolls to represent OCs, but this guy is sort of a tribute doll which I swore I'd never do (only because of the strict OC rules, there's nothing wrong with tribute dolls) But I've had a hard time putting money down on another body for a doll I "shouldn't" have. This seems like a fun way to approach a tribute.
please post here once you receive it, although I’m not buying dolls anymore as my collection is over flowing, I’m really intrigued with this body’s posing abilities. Thank you
This is very interesting, I love the idea of having the body actually being soft and having folds. I hope this sells well enough for more companies to try their own spin!
Fascinating stuff! I agree with RabidBunnies above, very reminiscent of antique bisque and porcelain dolls with partial cloth bodies. The lightweight nature of this also would be really helpful for folks with physical limitations who still want larger bodied dolls. I also imagine the soft middle would produce a doll that is more huggable than most - which may be nice for some people! Very interesting innovation, and I hope this sort of thing persists as an option for people who like those advantages and are willing to deal with the potential downsides.
I cross-posted this to the Joydoll discussion thread. An update on Joydoll and the progress of the soft cotton body. This news has been shared on Weibo and Xiaohongshu/XHS (aka Rednote, Little Red Book) without any English translation. Shipment of the cotton body and resin hand/foot parts preorders will be delayed and likely go into next year. The reason is, Joy was hospitalized in late September with what seemed like a life-threatening illness. She's now out of danger and recovering in hospital, but she'll be out of action for some time. A family member has now stepped up to take care of these preorders and fulfil them, which is going to be a slow process. The relevant news posts on Joydoll's Weibo account are here (initial announcement of illness and preorder suspension, shared early Oct) and here (current update on preorder progress, shared today), and I believe they're on Joydoll's XHS account too. --- If you ordered through a dealer, they should keep you updated on ETAs and refunds. If you ordered direct through Taobao and haven't paid balance yet (this preorder uses the deposit/balance payment method), you can enquire customer service on Joydoll's Taobao store. You can get a refund, but it might take time to process. There's more information on payments and refunds in the Weibo posts. So far, this update is just for the cotton body and the option hand/foot parts preorders. No word yet about the second Lai head preorder that happened in August. Such worrying news ... Joydoll posted quite regularly on CN social media, and the silence after her hospitalization felt so ominous. I'm relieved that she's in stable condition and hopeful that she'll recover.
Cross-posted to the Joydoll discussion thread. Update on Joydoll... The Cotton body preorder is starting to ship out. My order (resin option parts only, placed through Joydoll's Taobao store) has just landed at my proxy's warehouse. If you placed your order with a dealer, I expect you'll hear news of it soon. I haven't seen any news yet about Lai's second preorder. I suspect they are focusing getting the cotton body squared away, before dealing with Lai. As a solo indie artist, Joy used to handle all her BJD orders herself, but now they're being fulfilled by her relatives, who aren't familiar with BJDs so they've had to learn everything on the fly. Joy herself is still in hospital. I gather that she's recovering, but whatever ailment she has seems to be serious enough to put her out of action. Joy is well-known in the Chinese community and there's been a lot of community support for Joy's relatives. I understand that Metisdoll (another indie BJD sculptor) has been advising them, and a university classmate has stepped up to design the cotton body's CoA (something that Joy would usually do herself). All this news came from Joydoll's Weibo. Joydoll's Instagram hasn't been updated, presumably because her relatives don't speak English and/or don't have access to Instagram.
Thanks for sharing updates! I'd been wondering if she was getting better, but I can't figure out Weibo. It's a relief that her health is improving, even slowly, and that she has a good support network
double posting to say i've received my soft body! I'm a little nervous about actually building up, but just because of my own general anxiety lol. The videos joydoll made are very detailed (and I'm glad there are videos. Some stuff I might have figured out by myself or from written instructions, but for others having the visual explanation is needed). It's really such an exciting concept, I'm glad I was able to get one!
So far I'm still building the body. I've been working a little on it every day, trying not to rush things. There are many layers of foam to cut and assemble with glue, which demands some care and attention. It's actually pretty relaxing to do, as long as I pay attention to the instructions and follow them well. I hope to finish sometimes next week (I still have a good 25 minutes of videos to go through, there's really a lot of steps!)
I love the creativity in this hobby. When I first saw this, I was a bit confused, but this is the perfect explanation. I think it's brilliant. It also immediately made me think of my old porcelain head doll with the cloth body.
Hmm, assembling layers gives me Lisa Lichtenfels vibes. I have her book and while she makes static figures she builds them up in layers of batting cut in the shpae of muscles and layers of fabric for the skin. I can see doing something similar over an articulated doll skeleton. If you have contact with the maker tell her that at least I, and perhaps other people, might be interested in just buying the pattern and cutting our own doll(s).
Some parts of the body are foam over an articulated skeleton, others are resin. The resin parts have some key difference with a regular body (the torso is open on the sides to make it easier to install over the foam body as well as to improve shoulder/arm mobility I'm guessing, and the lower arm/lower legs have much wider channels than on a regular doll, I assume to help join them to the internal skeleton) It is probably possible to make adaptations so the foam body can be fitted to regular doll parts, but you'd need to significantly change either the way the soft body is built, or make heavy mods to the doll parts. With that said, if you have experience assembling bodies of that style (or a book explaining the basics) you may not need a pattern at all. If you have a doll of similar size, it can be re-engineered. And then it's a matter of buying the different materials. (which... is a significant part of why the kit appealed to me, finding the right material is a bother)
This is such an interesting concept-- I'm really drawn in by the idea of more dynamic posing!! Could lead to some wonderful photos. Endless ideas!
