How did you create this image? What was your concept?
When I was playing with clothes and wigs to see how I could make my boy to look human I saw that he started to look like Bill Kaulitz from Tokio hotel. So I made a furwig that looked like his current hairstyle and I wanted to make pictures that could have been taken at a concert. At some performances you see that they have a bigscreen with nice images on them. so I looked for a piece of fabric that could give that effect. And I took the spots from my photostudio to create spotlight effects that they have on stage. I made a microphone for him to sing in. I then decided that I wanted to go for the dramatic ballad effect and put him on a chair and asked to friend to start blowing smoke at him because on concerts they use smoke often.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?

There are some bushes near our apartment that look like small trees - I was able to put Azel in the "tree," and take a photo of him on a branch. He really does look human in this photo!

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My original idea was to show Dubh full length so you could see his hakama, and and really get the idea that he is all sweaty and on his way out of the dojo after a martial arts practise. However, you lost the details in the full length so I went for the close up so you could see the sweat glistening on his beautifully muscled torso, and on his gorgeous face.

Empty parking ramp, car parked with door open, VADS (Voice Activated Doll Stand — a.k.a. "assistant") holding doll in suitable position to enable a forced perspective shot. Small aperture to provide deep DOF, zoom lens to shorten perspective. Two off-camera flashes to provide lighting. Camera set to Tungsten WB to give the cool blue ambience, while flash lighting doll gelled with full CTO to provide a bit of warmth.

My concept was to get some interesting shots of my doll at night. I took about 100 photos and this is the one that i felt looked the most human, the bachground feels like it's the right size for my girl. So i hope i chose the right photo for this contest.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
Honestly this was supposed to be a much grander and elaborate scheme... but it's really hot outside so I just kind of ended up plopping her down and taking a picture. The brightness dims down the joint in her knees and the crop eliminates the bulk of the elbow joints. The long shadow suggests height and the shoes are awesomely realistic. I made the outfit myself, including striping the shirt with a paint marker for that worn texture and realism.

Although the picture itself is quite simple, the set-up really wasn't! I was handling several lamps and being in the most uncomfortable positions to get the best angles, while trying not to knock those two over. It must have looked funny!

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I wanted to make Maryweather look as much like a real girl as possible (well with pink eyes and pink-silver hair), so I posed her with her parasol to hide her arm and wrist joints, and used the stockings to make her ankle joints barely visible (the only joints that you can see besides her neck joint). I think even though I have a lot to go, this turned out fairly well.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept is "No pictures please!", since dolls have to be (mostly) willing models, and humans are not always the same. Here are two dolls at a reception dinner who don't wish to have their picture taken; for what reason, we could only guess.

The image was created by doing a long exposure, and moving the doll's hand to make it look as if he was covering his face. Lighting correction, and a crop was done through photo editing but everything else is how it came out of the camera.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I used clothing elements, lighting and pose to convey a natural human looking image. All joints were covered up by the clothing and I posed the doll doing a human action. I used lighting to try and create shadows and help build a more natural element to the 'room'. I used a panel for the background, but kept it simple so it wouldn't take away from the main focus. Since the dolls eyes would upset the balance of natural proportion, I made sure to shoot my image from an angle where her bangs hid the detailing of her eyes.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept is to represent a window with shattered glass that my Pierrot clown character is looking through. He is a troubled soul that is trapped by his stage persona which is represented by the theater mask and mandolin neck in the corner of the photo.

I created the image by hanging a photoframe with shattered glass (I taped the glass shards to the inside of the frame to secure it first) from the ceiling using wire, then draped my backdrop fabric over a trifold presentation board. The doll was positioned behing the frame. The mask is attached to the board with a pin, and the mandolin sits on a vintage vase.

I used a tripod, one studio lamp, and natural and flourescent light.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept was to capture a glimpse of a troubled performer as he gazes out of his self inflicted prison.

I actually pricked my own finger to get some blood to use to bloody the finger of my doll, but the effect turned out very subtle, and probably not worth the pain!

I used a photoframe that I attached some broken glass pieces to that was hung from the ceiling to give the effect of a window.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The concept is a lonely hide & seek, where she isn't really hide, so it will be easy to find her. She's waiting someone to found her, but find nothing, because she plays that game all alone. To create this image, I placed my doll behind a wall and a Chinese style divider, so it will look like that she is hiding.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
"Pennsic," an annual major reenactor's war is about to begin and so my mind was turned to the idea of war. So, I was inspired by the idea of a warrior coming home safely from battle and being welcomed, warmly, by his lady. She is glad of is safe return and proud of his strength, honour, and prowess in battle. But happiest that her love is by her side once more.

Of all the dolls I've owned so far, Ezra has remained the longest, but has been packed away for some time. I thought it was only fitting that the poor showoff end his hiatus by being entered into a contest. This photo was taken in a cool peaceful part of the city park, against a massive tree. I liked how the tree complimented what Ezra was wearing.

My concept was "Seamstress".
I am a seamstress myself, so I thought replicating my own usual position would be quite sweet for my doll.
I used a combination of homemade props alongside pre-bought items to create the look of the workspace, with sewing items, food/chocolate and a drink to hand.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The doll is a Dream Realm Xiao Chi, and back when I was a dealer for them, I wanted props to help make these dolls stand out from the rest. The motorcycle fits 60-70cm dolls. I realized there aren't a lot of dolls in cars, on motorcycles, on horses, or other methods of transportation, so I figured this would make my doll stand out from most. I put him on a "dirt road" and made sure his tires showed he'd actually been driving down the road before he stopped for a moment to contemplate his next adventure. I ride a motorbike, myself, so had fun making him look like a real motorcycle rider might look while stopped in thought. While I don't want the top prize if I win, if there are lesser prizes and you think I deserve any, that would be nice. I would enjoy the feeling of winning, but I want the lovely girl doll to go to someone who would really love and enjoy her.

I love the new Ruru faceplate from Fairyland, as she is more 'Asian' in ascetic. I drew from that and expanded to make her playing with paper cranes made from origami paper. Ruru is quite soulful and seemed so lonely I felt she properly displayed why I consider her "Almost Human".
