How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept was a feeling I've always searched for. I've always wanted to feel on top of things, and I've always wanted to feel free. I wanted to get that feeling across in this image. I wanted whoever looked at it to feel free enough that they could stand on top of something and feel the wind against them, and not have to worry about anything.

I created this image by waiting for the perfect time of day, a sunset, and using the "dusk" setting on my camera, I knelt down several feet behind him after perching him on the railing of my porch and captured this image against the trees and the sky.

The concept was to create an image people can relate to. We all went through an unsure, awkward phase in our lives, and this was my representation of that phase.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
When I took my dolls to work with me, I took a little time to let them "explore". Ellery (back) seemed extremely interested in the windows, as is in her curious nature, but Halowen (front) seemed to have the same wistful desire to leave the building that I did. Their reflections underscored to me that we were ALL trapped at work until quittin' time.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I must be honest - I don't own lots of props or doll accessories, but I do have a baby apple tree my husband and I recently planted in our backyard. The doll used (DZ Jake) is pretty stylized so I knew I had to try to hide his eyes with lighting. I researched night photography, learned a few new things about my camera and took Brad out for an evening shoot.

The concept I envisioned for this is "contemplation," much like how I felt about this contest.

"Should I go for it?"
"Is it silly?"
"Do I even stand a chance?"

... then finally, a confirmation: "You can't win if you don't try!"

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The image is titled "She Said No. " It shows a young man whose marriage proposal has been rejected. Heartbroken, he is drowning his sadness in wine, twirling the now useless ring, staring at his own reflection, while the candles are burning out.

The image is prop-heavy; I went to town with miniature vessels. The reflective quality of glass is meant to emphasize his solitude, it's fragility - his emotional state.

The shot is taken with Nikon DS70. The only photo retouching is for image cropping and color correction, done in Photoshop.

The model is Soom MS Sabik Elf NS, aesthetics by me, wig by Monique Gold, clothes by Dollmore.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The concept is "bound". When I read the contest description, I just knew I had to use an EID woman as my model.

I decided to use "rope" (in this case, black yarn) to hide the joints. The patterns are a variation on traditional Japanese rope bondage patterns. They needed to be altered somewhat to cover the joints, though.

The image was actually shot in black and white; the color was not removed in post-processing.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept is of my boy enjoying nature in as close to a natural state as possible. He's wearing a Native American outfit made by my friend. I decided last minute to challenge myself by having him wear as little clothing as possible when originally, I was going to cover every single joint with clothing or some type of material. This is another one from the Native American shoot. In this picture I tried to use the natural sunlight to hide the joints and make him look as human as possible. I think the sunlight that day worked better than any photo shop effect could have. Again I hope you enjoy.

Chief Eyes of Sky (Angeal) has decided the woods behind him is where they will have the next hunt. He turns to tell the others in his tribe.

He appreciates nature, so down on one knee he listens to and feels the wind passing by.

It was really difficult for him to pose on one knee with the wind blowing so harshly (but he's tough). I wanted to get the look of the wind blowing through his hair and feathers. His face (in that angle) to me, looks contemplative as if he hears a message.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My Kazahaya, a Migidoll Ryu, is the most human-like doll in my household, and I've always wanted him to be depicted as realistic as possible in photos. ^^ He has small eyes, uncommon in the BJD world, but that makes him even more like a living, breathing man. A few hours ago, I sat down and redid his face up for the contest. It took me 1 hour to finish (it's almost 3 AM now!!), and I'm so proud of it, even though it's not that good. X3 I worked under a strong white study lamp, and I used it as a lighting for this photoshoot (at this hour, it's pitch dark elsewhere in my room). ^^

My concept to this image is "look like human in 'size'".( although my doll is MSD size..)

I created this image at public store book at my town. I did it with my mini digital camera ( 'cos at book store, not allowed to bring any cameras especially SLR) and did it secretly and quickly ( I was afraid that I would be expelled by the store keepers... )

no edit, no crop, just a bit color and light correction .

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
She wakes up every morning, rubs her eyes and steps on the scale.
For me, it's regular acts what makes us human. It's routine and habits mixed with our everyday obssesions, what makes us human. I wanted to show you how a simple thing like stepping on a scale can make your brain instantly thing on humans rather than dolls. For that matter, I don't think I'd have to hide the nature of the doll itself.
Because there are not the joints what makes them dolls, we ourselves are jointed anyways. It's emotions what makes us humans, it's mimic those emotions what makes dolls feel alive.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I wanted to create a Vogue-like image, inspired by the beautiful models from the magazines. The intens look and the enchanting gaze was what I wanted to achieve. With a little decorating, using a white cloth and flower petals I took straight from the garden, this picture came into existence.

Many days I drive by a mini-golf course and they have an awesome pirate ship. With permission, I was able to carry the infamous Dead Gary up onto it for a photoshoot. It was difficult to get a shot without grass or bits of golf course in it, but I liked this one. It makes me think of a ghost ship beaching itself in some grove with the dead still on it. I call the photo "All Hands Lost"

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
Low key lighting like this really emphasizes curves and adds depth, so I thought it would be a perfect lighting style to show how human she looks. The deep dark shadows add form and shape. The light also adds a softness to the resin, making it look more like skin.
She's not a really realistic sculpt and she had a golden shimmer on her face-up... so it's a lot harder for me to take realistic pictures of her than my other doll (whom is on vacation at a friend's house momentarily.).

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I must admit I took it upon myself to challenge the "realism" expectation I envisioned when I read about this contest. I took a doll with a not so realistic headmold in a frilly dress that lacks realism as well and then positioned it so that the not so realistic face-up was the center of the picture.

But, I still see realism.

I see the realism in the breastbone. I see realism in the chubby cheeks. I see realism in the hand-applied eyelashes. I see realism in the indentation above the chin and below the lower lip.

I prefer to see dolls which speak for themselves.

Then, I took a purposely grainy picture under florescent lighting at night using a five-year old digital camera to take away the "fake" clarity many pictures have. For me, realism can be seen in old photographs that are less than perfect. They are the photographs of friends and families from years gone by and the beauty of them is in the imperfections. To be too clear and precise looks fake and cold to me.

But, beauty - and realism - is in the eye of the beholder.

In order to bring my boy to life in this picture I focused mainly on attempting to make him seem proportionally larger compared to the background. I placed him nearer to the camera in comparison to everything in his surroundings and made sure to remove any objects that would reveal his true proportions. This was the strategy I used to create the illusion that he is actually full size.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I wanted something a little steamy and a little intense. I think I managed a shot that fit that description! ~ This was shot in a local State Park with a Canon EOS Kiss digital and a 50mm prime lens. It was 95+ degrees outside, with a relatively high humidity but remained overcast for the duration of the shoot. This will also be the last time he is outside unprotected!

I wanted to convey the idea of a shy little girl. Originally, I had her peeking around the legs of my boy, but he wasn't standing for it! I stuck her in the chair for a moment to put him away, and the end posing wasn't too far off from the accidental posing. Serendipity! ~ The photo was taken with a Canon EOS Kiss Digital with a 50mm prime lens, and a very curious cat sniffing her feet.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I usually try to pose my dolls as realistically as I can, since that is pretty much the reason I got them- as art models and character avatars. However, I tend to lean towards the darker, higher contrast images to help blur the lines of doll/human, so for this I just wanted to try somthing different. Regardless of whether or not I win, I learned a lot during the last few weeks. I hope I can continue to become a better photographer!

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I wanted to create a natural home-scene, two people being comfortable around each other. The idea for this arrangement evolved when I found our appletree had shed a bunch of tiny apples prematurely due to the heat, and I thought they'd be ideal for a BJD photo-shoot. Using Jessica and Tedros was a natural choice as the EIDs look very life-like.
There's no trickery involved, just tedious posing of the dolls that dropped apples or the paper at inopportune moments and generally broke my nerve. I cut some bites out of the apple, but unfortunately Jessica can't hold it in a way that makes it visible without looking stupid. The light was just the natural daylight coming in through the windows.
I want to give credit to Mercy who made the wonderful doll-sized pottery.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I was brainstorming about what a doll won't do. Doll's don't clean up. They don't do the dishes, they don't vacuum your house. I would love it when they do. But you do it, to clean everything up and to make your home plesent. I havn't seen pictures of dolls doing the cleaning. So I desided I had to make a picture with a doll cleaning up. I made the dress she is wearing (with sleves) , even the stockings, I wanted to make it realistic, something you would wear in your normal life. Trying to make her a human. I made a vacuum cleaner out of klay, and after a few days tried to make the picture. This picture really took my interest because it looks like she is really working, and at a doll home.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
This picture was taken of a "daydreamer". It was taken at night with an older camera, however, the sparkle in the eye, the shine off the lips and the slighty disarray of the hair strands contributes to the realism. In addition, I wanted to take an "up the nose shot" since in reality, no one is smiling pretty or in a perfect position when a picture is taken. Real life isn't photo-perfect. It's moment-perfect.

In addition, I'm not interested in what a doll is doing. I'm more interested in what the doll seems to be saying or feeling. I enjoy sculpts that "speak" and the Volks MSD F20 has always been a personal favorite of mine for this reason.
