Contest Almost Human (Doll Photography Contest)

Jun 24, 2010

    1. Since realism was the theme of this contest, the more realistic sculpts obviously have an edge, but to get my votes, it wasn't enough to simply have a realistic looking doll. Athough in the end the entries I chose were of realistic-style dolls, they had a lot more going for them than that. Graceful, relaxed realistic poses, clothing and props in scale and outstanding lighting and photography skills were what did it for me.

    2. I really like a lot of the pictures, but only a few really stand out to me as human-like. With many of them, I felt myself saying, "That's a pretty doll and a great photo, but it doesn't make me think 'human'."
Still, I'm going to have a hard time picking which one(s?) I'll vote on. XP

    3. I don't think the other competition has many contestants. XD This one flourished more because we are the owners of the dolls and we love taking photos of them. The other competition required us to involve other people... and that's not always an easy job. >.> I was going to enter but then I got lazy... XD

Oh, and I want to say how amazed I am to see some dolls with inhuman characteristics in this competition, that really stood out for me, because of the great photography skills. These... would won my votes if only I had more. X3 I wish we were given more votes... 3 is just too little.

    4. Haha, while this contest had the most entries, the other competitions have many contestants as well. Over a hundred in the "Almost Doll" and over 70 in the T-shirt contest.

I was very impressed at all the hard work, great ideas, ingenious posing, and lovely dolls entered in this contest. Kudos to everyone who participated; it was most fascinating to me to see what specific aspects of humanity owners sought to capture in their resin. :)

    5. Oh, gawd. I didn't know... (_ _)

Thank you... and you're welcome~ altho' my dolls are those without props... (_ _)

    6. Thanks for that, very very much! ^^;

    7. It was such a treat to look through all of these gorgeous entries!!!!
As for my votes, I wound up narrowing it down to a handful in which the doll not only looked human, but evoked a sense of humanity and movement in the photo.
And even then, I still had some favorites that i couldn't vote for-too many awesome shots!
      Great job everyone!!!!

    8. Plus it is easier to get a doll to pose for a photo then a human, because to be honest the doll can't say know, or say they want something in return. It is finding time to get a human to pose for you as well. Plus I think it is easier to make a doll look like a person then a person to look like a doll. Since dolls are "imitation" (falling for a better word) of the human image. I can think of some ways to make a person look like a doll though.

Plus most of us own dolls, not all of us know someone willing to be photographed. I have the problem of not knowing many girls and i think it would be easier to make a girl look like a doll IMO.

    9. Hard to choose… So many nice entries; some people put a lot of effort in all tiny details and some had really nice ideas. The more I look at the photos the more I feel that I’d need ‘top 10’ not ‘top 3’.
Well, there are still 2 days to decide.

Thanks everyone who make all these contests happen. :)
Although I don’t actively participate, it’s still interesting to see people’s creativity.

    10. It was a real joy to look through all these photos and see the effort and creativity everyone put into their pieces. This was an excellent idea for a contest, so kudos to the DoA staff too!

In the end I chose for #1 a photo that didn't have very realistic dolls in it. However, I felt that the posing and the mood of the piece created the most "human" photo of the bunch. They evoked emotion, and what's more human than that? :)

    11. It was hard to narrow it down to three. There were a good dozen or so that especially stood out to me. Some had realistic dolls, some didn't. Some still had joints visible -- that those images made me completely not even notice impresses me greatly. Some had perfectly camouflaged them in a wholly natural way. I think what impressed me most about these was, as a group, they showed so many different means of creating the illusion of life.

Seriously awesome work, to all that participated. Good luck!

    12. Oh wow, i would love to know which produced such and emotion and why, but that is best till after the voting is done. But i think it is soo cool that one touched you that way.

    13. Yeh. I don't know all that many people, and even fewer younger people, and no thin, "doll-like" people (whose parents would allow me to post their pictures online). So no entering that one for me, sadly. I had a good idea, though. :<

    14. Finally submitted my votes! That was harder than entering. x_x I actually had to go to my mom and sister and get their input. They actually picked totally different ones than I was going to! It was only then that I realized I was looking for beautiful photos of beautiful dolls... They were looking for dolls that were almost human. It really helped me see what it means to be "almost human." The entries I voted for ended up being ones that weren't in my top three prior to talking it over with people outside the community, but that I now truly see as "almost human."

So... I really recommend getting input from an outside party if you are having trouble picking your votes!

    15. This is what I did, too!

    16. I think not always thing would work. But the people i know who are beautiful enough to pass as dolls are also doll collectors and we would both want the prize. I also know one girl who has ball joints tattooed to her arms, which gives the doll effect. I think she would have a good chance, but again is a doll collector and i can't get to her easy since we mostly speak online.

But yeah i don't actually know many people who could do it any way.

    17. where is the voting on this?

    18. Lots of great pics! I managed to narrow it down to 20. Then it got hard. Portrait shots didn't do it for me. I found that if it looked like they got caught in the middle of doing something it looked more real to me.

    19. what time is it? isn't voting closed already on this one? O_O i can't wait to see the winners!! X3

    20. There's a little over an hour left for voting if they plan to close the thread at 11P.M. EST....best of luck everyone!!

      DMM :kitty2

    21. When do the winners get posted? I'm on the end of my chair waiting for it XD

    22. Has anyone used Safari? I tried voting last night and early this morning and kept getting error messages (Safari couldn't complete the operation, etc.) so I was wondering if it was just me.

    23. I tried to view the thread using safari on my iPhone and it wouldn't even load all the pictures, so I had to go home and use Firefox to vote.

    24. I'm really excited to see how everyone did, and especially to see which picture won!! :D

    25. Yay winners are up c:
Kindof the ones I expected to win!
And yay, i got 8 votes lolol XD

      Congrats to the winners! Welldeserved.

    26. Congratulations to the winners!! Well done everyone!!

    28. Congrats to the winners!

There were so many great pics in this comp that I found it hard to narrow it down to just three. Great job, everyone!

Also, congrats and thanks to the mods for running this contest. All the hard work is appreciated!

    29. Congrats to the winners ^^ I'm kinda happy as I voted for all three of them, I think they're really beautiful photos.

    30. Congratulations to all winners... XDD One of my boy only got 1 vote (oh no no...) but the other one got 8! XDD I'm just glad I entered. This was so much fun... Now I can post their photos in the gallery (been waiting for the whole month!)... XDDD Thanks to all the mods, too!

    31. XD time to post my set of pictures up in the gallery XD

    32. Congratulation to the winners! \o/

And a little off topic but does anyone know what doll is Entry#109 on post #11?
Edit:/ Nevermind, did some research and noticed that it looks like/ it's very likely Oasisdoll Linglan :3

    33. Congrats to the winners!

    34. Haha two of the ones I voted for won, they deserved it! Congratulations for the winners!

    35. Okay, I feel like I'm an idiot but where are the pictures to vote on? I know voting's over but I'd like to at least be able to see all the entries. I only found this thread last night between 11pm and midnight EST and the link (if ever there was one) was already gone off the first page (which I'm reading is where it was supposed to have been). (Plus they don't have a link up yet for the Almost Doll contest; isn't today the first day of voting for that?)

      Just a little confused.. :(

    36. Congrats to the winners! It was so hard to decide what to vote on, there were so many good ones~

    37. Wow~~I got 187!!
That's an unexpected good result, much much more than I expected. Thank you very much for voting. I'm glad I entered.
      Thanks a lot :sorry

    38. Congrats that is a pretty good number!

    39. I am shocked and humbled to have my image chosen among so many spectacular photos. I am far from the best photographer, but I believe it was the sincere emotion behind the story that moved people to vote for my image. Thank you, fellow doll lovers, for your kindness, and thank you, DoA moderators, for making this possible.

In order to express my gratitude, I put together a comic strip giving the context to the image.

    40. Congrats to all the winners. You guys did a great job. It's funny to see my 12 votes against the triple digits that one. I don't even see my second entry on the points list XD Maybe next time.

    41. Thanks so much for the votes! I sure had fun tromping around that mini-golf course with their tiny houses. Congrats to Katyok and Karmade on their places, and to everyone else for their great entries! :)

    42. Whoahhh~ Congrats for the winnersss~ ^0^ You guys made beautiful photos~~
All other entries are also gorgeous~ :D

    43. I was pleased! The winners were my faves!! And well done to all who entered! There were some really amazing entries

    44. Congrats to all the winners!!

I was flabbergasted that mine got 34 points even, with all the amazing photos! 27th place isn't too bad, among that level of competition! Now that the results have been posted, I can mention that the reason my photo was in black and white... was because my model was gray! :sweat

Now that it's over though, I can finally post the entire photo shoot in the gallery! :dance I've been so eager to post it, but had to wait until the contest was done!
