Contest Almost Human (Doll Photography Contest)

Jun 24, 2010

    1. Almost Human

      Description
Through careful posing, lighting, composition, and props, members will create the most realistic photo portraits of their dolls.

This may involve hiding the joints with clothing, taking the photos from unusual angles, or using unique lighting. The use of in-scale props may also create the illusion that your doll is almost human!

      Entry Details

      Who May Enter?
This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have joined the forum before June 25th, 2010.

The contest is also open to all forum staff.

      Rules
      1. Minimal use of photo editing. Light correction is permissible, but no photo manipulation to make your doll seem more human-like. You may not use Photoshop or other image editing software to remove or blur joints.

      2. Photos must be new and taken specifically for this contest.

      3. No posting entries or others that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed.

      4. Photos can only include on-topic dolls

KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL PHOTO FILES. Winners will be asked to provide the original raw images complete with EXIF data to verify that the photos were taken fresh for the contest and that there has not been excessive photo manipulation. Note: By "raw" we just mean unaltered and fresh off of your camera, not the RAW image format.

      Specifications

Each member may submit up to TWO entries, but may only win one prize.

Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted from 12:01am EST July 1st to 11:00pm EST July 31st. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, please consult a time zone converter website.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using this form!
Do not PM Truffle or any of the other moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

If you are not interested in the top prize, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

      Voting

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 1st-August 7th. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a new feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.

      Prizes
The first prize for this contest will be a lovely Little Monica Yuria. Yuria is a 60cm girl that was donated by Little Monica!

Please check out more pictures of Yuria, as well as Little Monica's other dolls, on their official website!

The second prize will be a pair of gray urethane eyes, donated by Little Monica.

The third prize will be a treat of your choice from Have it Sweet, an excellent little candy shop! (Their Fleur de Sel caramels are to die for. Seriously, aim for third!)

    2. Yuria is so cute, I wish I was better with photography XD

    3. I'm going to try my hardest :3

    4. This contest looks awesome - silly question, but if I wanted to use one of my friends dolls as my model, is this ok? (I want to enter one with my own doll too - but she is a puki puki, and I would love to be able with an SD size too)

    5. Can the two entries be two different photoshoots or just two photos from one photoshoot? :)

    6. This made me smile. Even Truffle has 'dolls' on the brain.;):)

    7. The doll can only be entered once, whether you use the doll or your friend does. Also, should that entry win, you and your friend would have to sort of which of you gets the prize. From our standpoint, we will be giving the prize to the member who entered the photo. :)

It would be better to have two entries from two different photoshoots. Technically, they could be from the same photoshoot, but they shouldn't be nearly the same photo.

    8. Bah, spelling. Crazy human hangup. I'll go in and fix it now.

    9. Kay, question for you, impossibly cute dog. By two entries, that means two for each contest? Can one enter more than one sub-contest?

    10. I'll answer for Truffle, since Princess Dog is taking a nap right now after a morning of some crazy Extreme Fetch. Each contest's rules pertain only to that contest. :) So, if the rules for the "Almost Human" contest state that a member may have two entries, that means for that particular contest. :) You can definitely enter every single contest.

    11. while I understand that we can't shop joints (yay lol) what would be the rules for maybe cleaning up seamlines?

    12. Nope, no photoshopping seamlines either. (Sanding the doll is completely acceptable though. :) )

    13. ok, figured as much :) thanks!

    14. Sorry if this is a stupid question or if it's already answered, but -- can there be more than one doll in the photo?

    15. I was wondering are you allowed to enter with pictures of 2 different dolls. so one picture of doll x and 1 picture of doll y.
Hope my question is understandeble. my inglisch is not that well. sorry.

    16. With regards to the "only on-topic dolls" rule - what if you couldn't see the dolls very well? My concept right now would be to have an off-topic doll in the background to add "figures" to the scene, but would hopefully be far enough away from the camera not to be identifiably off-topic.

I'd hate to have an entry that was possibly in the running only to be disqualified because someone goes, "oh hey, I have that Barbie. That outfit is distinctive."

    17. What is a photo's EXIF data? Is that referring to camera make, date, and time, or something else?

    18. that and the settings the camera is using (exposure, ISO, etc). cameras save it automatically in the file data. :)

    19. Yup!

Yes, you can have two entries with two different dolls.

Unfortunately, all dolls in photos must be on topic dolls. However, if we can't identify the blurry, background figures as being off topic (and we're not going to be staring with mangifying lenses), then you should be fine.

    20. I am most attracted to the "Almost Doll" contest. But i want to enter this as well.
Can we enter more than one contest?

    21. Yes, qualified members may enter all the contests, if they'd like.

    22. excellent! Thank you~

    23. I only have one doll, can I enter two pictures of her for this contest? Or is it limited to one picture per doll?

    24. You can definitely use the same doll for all photos. :)

    25. This may seem silly but what about unnatural eyes/unnatural hair colours, is this allowed?

For example: Purple eyes or blue hair

    26. If it can be done with contacts or hair dye, it can still look human, right? ;)

The styling and flow of the hair or natural glance of the eyes would be more important than the color of each.

    27. Cool, thanks ^^

    28. Ah. Another question I forgot to ask. >> Is it okay to crop a picture?

    29. Yes, you may crop a picture.

    30. Firstly, happy DoA's 6th Anniversary!

I love the idea for the contest, but lovely Little Monica Yuria does not fit my likes and resin crew so after reading this:

I was wondering, does this mean winner cannot accept the prize to give it as present to other person who really wants it? It seems not, but just in case, I would really like to know about it. Thanks.

    31. Can I change the intensity of the photo? That it will be more black-and white, and less colored than the original photo? Or does this count as excessive photo manipulation? :/

    32. The rules say that you cannot sell it. Giving it as a gift is fine... however, if we find that you actually sold the item, you will be barred from future contests and will receive a Marketplace suspension. If you have a friend who wants the prize, we recommend having them compete in the contest!

Light color correction is permitted, but keep in mind that if you win, the moderators will be asking to see your original file to see how much has been altered.

    33. Is it okay to shoot the photo in RAW (but will be submitted as a JPEG) and then color correct there? Or do you prefer starting with a JPG and then color correcting from there :sweat

Also is it possible to use anything besides color correcting like a sharpening tool? (just curious ^^; I don't want to do something and then not have it be permissible)

    34. The form doesn't work. I can access the Almost Doll entry form just fine, but when I click on this one I get redirected to "you don't have access to this page." D:
The T-shirt design contest link has the same issue.

    35. Test it out now, it should work.

    36. Works! Thanks C:

    37. Hey there, It says URL link for your photographs in the entry form, but it states not to post your picture anyway [?]
:/ so if i posted my picture in my photobucket account to get a url link is that not allowed, as in, not 'post your picture' only of DoA??

      D:

    38. Do we need to upload the pictures to a host site like Photobucket?

    39. Yes, you will need to upload your photo to a site such as Photobucket. When we mean not to post it, we mean not to post it to your LJ, dA, or on other doll forums, for example.

    40. Is it allowed to tweak brightness and contrast and such?
Does it even make sense to try and participate when one only has a limiting and crappy point and shoot cam? .__.

    41. Oh no, no photoshopped joints, and I love doing that ;_; Might give it a try, I LOVE making my dolls the most realistic/human possible. Just one question: Can we use photoshop to manipulate/add things? Like, scale furniture/props? Or it has to be everything done with one single raw photo?

    42. Nope, photoshopping in general is disallowed in this contest; it is not the point of the contest. The point of the contest photography, not photo editing. Please refer to the rules. No photoshopped props/ furniture/ etc. We encourage you to use truly to-scale props. Photoshop is only allowed for some color correction, and we will be asking for the original image for the winning image so that we can verify how much photo editing was done.

    43. I'm sorry you have to answer so many questions! XD I just would like to know if we are allowed to place a simple pixel border around the photo.

I did the contest shoot today, so I'm hoping to enter my picture somewhere today! :) <3 Contest love ^-^

Edit: never mind, I just have sent my photo, without border. ^-^

    44. It would be good to know if I could use a border. Also, does the picture have to be of the WHOLE doll?

    45. The picture does not have to be the whole doll. As we're looking just for the photo, there's no need for a border on the pic.

    46. Yuria is definately tempting me to give a shot at this...But I have a question.

Would it be alright if we use action figures like Figma in the shots? (Here's a link to their blog to check them out: http://ameblo.jp/figma/)

    47. Ahh... beautiful Yuria. How you tempt me so.

Good luck to all participants! :)

    48. I would love to join and try... ^_^... never really entire an official photography contest.. LOOL... *grab camera and start to think*

    49. First of all, Junkets you are awesome for keeping up with all these questions, but here's one more!!
Since no photoshopping is allowed, this is probably not allowed either but can we add pupils to a doll with pupiless eyes?

    50. Hun this was already answered, it would be of a human with contacts :P

    51. I cant seem to access the entry form ?? is the link broken

    52. I'm sure you'll have a hard time judging this.

    53. this sounds exciting but is to complicated for beginners but I look forward to seeing the entries

    54. the doll prize is beautiful !best of luck to all entries

    55. @Fanfic, Alrighty, I was just being paranoid XD

    56. One question... If I enter my doll or dolls in this competition, does that mean I have to refrain from posting their photos anywhere else?? >.> I mean, some of my dolls have distinctive characteristics. All my friends can recognize them even tho the photos I submit might not be from the same photoshoots... >.< Then what?

    57. This sounds like it's going to be fun ^^ I'll definitely have a picture up.

    58. omg >w< i can't wait to get my boy's head in the mail and then i shall try my best
(cause you can't really look human without a head lol)
it would be amazing if i was able to win her :D

    59. I took some photos the other day at a meet-up that I'm hoping will be suitable for use for this. Unfortunately, I'd taken my memory card out of my camera the night before and had to borrow a very kind person's card to take my pictures. They're mixed in with other meet-up photos and she is going to upload them to her Photobucket account. But since they're with the meet-up photos and she's going to bulk upload, she was going to put a link to all of the pictures in our meet-up thread. Will this disqualify them? If so, I guess I can pull them over to my account and ask her if she will delete them from hers.

    60. I was wondering this as well. I entered a picture of one doll, but I have several others of the same doll that I was thinking about posting in the gallery. The problem is that the doll is wearing the same outfit (she only has a couple of outfits), is in a similar (but very basic!) setting, and she's pretty distinctive looking.
      D:
Would that be okay, or should I wait?
