Ain Completed

Aug 7, 2007

    1. Wonderful! Absolutely stunning!
      I'm curious how long it takes the Smooth-On resin to set up. Alumilite sets up so darn fast, it's hard to get the piece poured and in the pressure chamber fast enough, and yet it doesn't set completely hard quickly, just hard enough to keep from being able to pour it past one or two small molds. I know I'll be making a change to a different resin before I start casting the final doll for sale, I'm just waffling between Smooth-On and Polytek.

    2. I'm using the slow set Smoothcast 310. It says it can be demolded in 2-4 hours but I seem to have no trouble at 2 hours. It also has a longer pot life so I have time to mix and degass for a minute and then pour with plenty of time left over. I didn't use the pressure chamber yet but I still am getting pretty smooth good casts.

      Hope your feeling better!

    3. that's a good cast (and I've heard that smoothon has trouble with bubbles).

      When you say degass for a minute, do you mean in the vaccuum chamber?

    4. penguu: Yeah, after I mix I put it in the vacuum chamber for a minute then I pour it into the mold while it's still very liquid. That seems to get rid of most of the air. Next I'll put the mold in the pressure chamber and get rid of any tiny bubbles that would remain (:lol: that's the plan anyway!)

    5. Ack, bad news for me. Since I have neither the space nor funds for either a vaccuum chamber or a pressure pot. >_<

    6. I am, rash is basically obliterated already, just left behind this pinky leathery dry skin that's got a subtle pebbled look. I'm just miffed that I can't risk exposing myself to the resin until I've got money to buy full-body protective gear. :x

    7. Practicing with the test cast...face-up, lighting, etc. Ain can stand okay but I worry that he'll fall down. Personally, I want to suede and maybe even wire mine (when I make it). Of course, this white version doesn't have all the seam lines sanded smooth in his joints so maybe that's contributing to his slight instability (or maybe he drinks too much, hmmmm, looks like a nice enough kid though:lol: ).

      [IMG]

      Sorry about the picture quality...working on that...remember this guy's bright white...his eyes are grey and his hair is actually silver...got to work on taking pictures too :sweat !

    8. Oh i love Ain! :love
      Even if he's white with the light it looks like he's already casted in humen color :o
      I guess smooth-on resins are strong, but i don't know what will happen if he fall >___< a heart attack maybe :sweat

      How tall is Ain?

    9. Thanks! He's 60 cm tall.

    10. dollist, you did an amazing job on this boy. he is gorgeous. i can't wait to see more pictures of him.

    11. These are some head shots of the junk cast. I'm working on the next cast now, but things are going slow (I've got life, kids, soccer mom duties, etc. to tend to :) ). These aren't the greatest pictures. I took them at night at my worktable after I was done sculpting (working on a new head). I'll post good pics when I get to it!

      [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    12. Aaagh! Too... sexy! *dies*
      I need him! I have already started saving for him.

    13. A vacuum chamber and a pressure chamber. Wow! $$$ But your doll is amazing and so professional looking.:D

    14. Hi Dollist,
      I have been reading your WIP thread on Ain and I want to congratulate you, he is superb.

      Best of luck with your other head, I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures of your WIP and your work.

    15. He's so gorgeous. I want one! XC

    16. Ditto. >.>;
      He looks like he could be a character of mine that I'm working on. ^^;;

      Great work, Dollist, I love your Ain <3! And envy your sculpting skills, but that's a given. XD;

    17. O: I WANT ONE. He's cuuute.

    18. :) Thanks everybody!

      I've nearly finished the normal skin Ain and should have some pics here soon. I've also mailed a copy to my sister who is a wonderful seamstress who will be working on outfits for him. If anyone is interested in having one, PM me so I can maybe get a list going. I don't know how fast I'm going to be able to work but I'll do my best (I have kids and that can be a job and a half!).

      I'm going to try and go to the meet-up in Jacksonville, Fl at Janicon in Nov. and bring Ain (maybe in different skin tones). I might even bring a Keid (that's his buddy I'm working on now...half closed eyes, slightly open mouth...I think he's turning out nice) if I keep it up. So if anyone's in the area there you can get a look at him.

      Well, enough of the long post. I'm sure I have things to do! ;)

    19. I think that he is very cute :kitty1 I can't wait to see more pic of him :) I really wish I could do some thing like that :sweat I think that if I tried I would end up blowing some thing up some how :eek:

    20. He looks AMAZING!

    21. Wow, that's really well done. I'd love to see the sculpt in various kinds of face-ups.

    22. oh, he's so beautiful!! +_+ i'm envious of your talent

    23. Please put me on that want list!!! But I won't have enough to buy him for a while. :( Cause I have to buy casting supplies for my own dollie. :cheer

    24. Miss_Pygmalion - Okey-dokey! And don't worry, there still plenty of time while I get my act together here :) and I should be able to make him for a while!

    25. x3 Eee, I'd love to be on the list too--but like Miss_Pygmalion, I have a bit of a money problem. -_-;

      I'm so, so, so glad to hear that he'll be available for a while. Words simply cannot express. *is infatuated with Ain*

    26. I would like to second Quill's infatuation! *makes grabby hands at Ain*

    27. Ain is a gorgeous boy! cant wait to see even more pics of him :)

    28. OMIGAWD!!! You're soooo talented. My friend and I have been trying rather clumsily to make our own BJDs from scratch, but they are no where at the same level as yours!Please divulge your secrets, oh sensei, and my friend and I shall gladly become your eager pupils!

    29. :love All the support is so appreciated...it makes me so happy that other people like him! I had such a good day today...I think I've mastered the perfect cast. I did find that if you use regular baby talc in the mold, your doll will come out smelling pretty darn good (yes the legs I cast today smell like a freshly powdered baby, cool huh?).

      Ligaya24 - If you have questions I'll do my best to answer them ;) !

    30. Wow, he turned out very beautiful! And very different from the clay-version in my opinion.

      ... I can't wait to cast mine...

    31. wow. he is really gorgeous. :love

    32. I think I'm a little late for this, but if you made the thighs just a little bit thicker, he would be very aesthetically pleasing. Having said that, I love the progress you've been making with him! If I have a job, and depending on his price when you're done, I might be part of the legions of people wanting to buy him! Hee-hee. :)

    33. Silk - Thanks! Yeah, the very first photo was the rough version (at the start of sculpting) and the head that was on there was the first head which I wasn't happy with and re-worked.

      SKooKuM Hime - Thanks a bunch!

      Ligaya24 - Hehe, I don't know about legions....I'd be happy with a few :) ! And yeah, he's already been molded and I'm casting. There are things that I'm not thrilled with now (could be from looking at this guy everyday for six months:lol: ) but I do have a lot of ideas for new dolls next year (hopefully :sweat ). And I don't think the price will be too bad...he's nice I think but I'm still new at this!

    34. WOW. He is really spectacular :D! You are so talented *__*

    35. Wow!! he look very gorgeous....
      ans that's really great that he can stand by himself. Perfect!!
      what kind of resin you use when casting him?
      I think the skin look beauty as real skin color
      do you also use any dye in resin too?

    36. EEEUphoria - Thankyou!

      kesschan - Thanks! I'm using Smooth-on resin and I'm adding their brand pigment (although the pics here, well most, are actually a pure white junk cast)...I'll hopefully be posting pics of the normal skin version soon.

      marianina - Thankyou (if the BabelFish translation was close)!:)

    37. I <3 him!! and I think he looks SMEXEH in white!! *steals him away* lol ^.^ cant wait to see his final cast! ^.^

      -Kira

    38. If those white pieces are junk casts... I loathe you. In the best way of course!^.~

    39. Wow. I'd only ever looked at the first page of this thread and I was impressed by that. I clicked ahead to the pg 4 pictures this time and WOW!

      He's just incredible! Great work!

      -bows down- now I have yet another dollie making idol to aspire to be like :)

      I wish I had the guts to do a whole body. Ain's is just BEAUTIFUL!

      Can't wait to see how much you'll be charging ;). -makes grabby hands-

    40. Thanks you guys!

      Yes those white casts are very junk related... all of the back side is missing...um, parts...where either I had air trapped or (duh) didn't use enough resin and there are tiny air bubbles under the surface because I didn't degass the resin or use the pressure chamber (you might ask if I enjoy wasting time and money...I would say no but you might think I'm lying :lol: ) All in the name of experimental doll making.

      And aka_spooky, making a body isn't really hard to do (you believe me right?), you should give it a try!

    41. Well, since I'm waiting for some husband help setting up the jigs so I can drill the arms and legs, I thought I'd start practicing doing face-ups...and I think I need a lot of practice. I think this is the third time I've ever done a face-up(be gentle :sweat ).
      [IMG]

    42. He so Pretty!!! *dies* And look very very much angrier than all the other pics. But it's a sexy angry!

    43. HAHAHHAHAHAHA Yeah sure I believe you ;)

      I'm mulling it over in my head and trying to figure out how to do the armature so that it's firm and cutable so that I can add on the rounded part to make a two part torso. Hmmm

      I will figure this out cause I really want a very specific type of physique. toned but not to the point of a Spartan and mature. And tall. Hmmmm. -drools-

      I'm getting a pressure pot for sure though and my dad has the vacuum and compressor so... resin casting here I come!

      BTW that photo you just posted of the head is FANTASTIC! I want! -grabby hands-

      He just looks so intense. :aheartbea

    44. XD oh you kill me every time i see new pics of Ain! heh
      I like your faceup, it looks natural. Im trying my first faceup and is difficult.
      Oh and when you sell Ain or Keid im in the waiting list to buy them! :love

    45. GAH!!!:o He's handsome! I knew he was before, but seeing him with a "practice" face-up...oi! I'm so excited to see what the finished product will look like. Again, beautiful job to a very talented artist!

    46. I really love your dolls!!! you really are talented.
      Right now i'm also working on a doll. (http://s210.photobucket.com/albums/bb46/milda_photos/)
      Just in clay atm but when she is finished i would like to cast her in resin(she still needs lots of work done to her,currently working on her body).
      I also want to cast bubble free(well as much as possible), could you tell me where you got your vacuum chamber and pressure pot?

    47. Aiiin... *flail* I want. T_T Badly.

      I actually rather like your faceup. It's very minimal, which I love, and probably with a small bit of practice it'll be perfected.
      Or maybe that's just me. But if I ever scrape up enough money to buy from you, I'd like to commission you for the faceup. ^^;

      And @ Shiza: Wow, really nice work so far. I really love her ears. x3 They're so big and pointy.

    48. Shiza - This might not help but I got my vaccuum chamber from the local smooth-on distributor and the pump came from this wacky place that people call Space Junk...long story...and, um , the pressure tank is a paint type that I got at Harbour Freight (then my delightfully handy husband fixed everything so it works the way I want it too). If you haven't already googled it, you could look at www.sculpt.com , they have some good stuff. Hope that helps....and your doll is beautiful!

      Quill - Thanks! I really need to practice but with all the casting and stuff I really haven't had the time. I'll probably scrap that face-up many more times(but isn't that one of the glories of resin?!).

      On another note...I have three dolls cast (they just need the holes drilled in their arms and legs...another long story about that) and I'll start taking more photos before I try to send them to new homes:) .

      -eva

    49. Thanks alot!!, thats just what i needed :) ,at least i can order one now(have to safe a bit first).
      Glad you and quill liked my doll,when i showed pictures of her at my work, people were like eeeeee :ablah: huge ears, trying to explain it was an elf didn't really help. Well really feeling happy now thanks.

    50. Oh, he's gorgeous! The only thing I might recommend is painting an eyelid crease above the eye, since the eye shape is otherwise so fierce.
      Poor guy needs a good laugh, he looks so pouty. *hug*

    51. Omigosh! You're talented too!!:o Must learn secret of BJD from all of you!:)

    52. [IMG]

      After tons of work to get his arms and legs set and drilled then finishing work (not sanding though...tomorrow :sweat ) I have my boy strung. He isn't sueded in this picture (or dressed for that matter). There are three more good ones to go after this!

      -eva

    53. OMG

      SO FREAKIN AWESOME!

      -grabby hands-

      Swoon.

      Are you selling him already?

    54. Not quite yet. I have three cast that I'm working on. I'm thinking of just putting them in the marketplace when I'm done...I don't feel like dealing with ebay and I don't have my own website yet. So hopefully soon :) .

    55. Hello again,
      I'm in the final stages of getting these dolls ready! They should be ready for sale hopefully by the end of next week. He'll be $400.00 plus shipping/insurance(which I think will be around $14). He'll be sanded, strung, come with a wig and acrylic eyes, blanket, and who knows what other goodies might tag along with him! At this time he won't come with a face-up(but it's pretty easy to pop his head off and give it a go!)

      Thanks for all the comments and support! Hopefully this kid will make himself right at home in someones family!

      -eva

    56. Gah! *dies again* I hope you will be making more of him! Cause I won't have the money for him for at least a month, and he will sell waaay before that.

    57. Well if people want him then I can make him!;)

    58. Hurray! *dances* Although I dunno why I'm celebrating, I can't buy him yet. XD;; ... *sigh* ._.;

      Unless, you sell the head separately? ^^;
      Hm, wonder what my dad would say if I asked if I could buy a bodiless head?

    59. :...( He's soooooo freakin' awesome! I'm still broke from buying Migidoll heads and bodies and stuff and I have x-mas presents to buy :doh I hope you're still willing to make more in the spring when I will have $$ again.

      He's just so cool. You did a WONDERFUL job!

    60. You doll looks so good btw I can't even tell he's not sanded yet.

      Great work:)
