Editing AI Photo-enhancing Apps and BJDs!

Apr 17, 2021

    1. So holy crap guys,
I’ve recently come across the concept of enhancing photos using AI via available mobile apps (in my case, I’ve become acquainted with the app called Remini), and frankly I’ve been blown away by what the technology is capable of these days!

Generally, the photo-enhancing apps are for portraits of people, and do a stinking amazing job at filling in the finest details on the blurriest of photos. Sooo...it wasn’t a huge leap before I wondered how it would do on photos of dolls!

Aaand it’s been super fun! It’s always a surprise what you’ll get. Sometimes your blurrier doll pics will come out in amazing clarity, and sometimes the app will simply just try its best at understanding your picture of your doll from the perspective of what it knows best: humans.

Unfortunately Remini only gives you 5 free uses a day, so I haven’t played with it near as much as I want to yet, but one of the first doll photos I put through was one of my favourite photos from the internet that I’ve had saved for a looong time and always wished it was clearer, an Iplehouse Carina by Devolvedarling. I’m pretty blown away by the result, which I’ll share below (original on left, app-generated image on right):

      Look at that face!!
It figured out how her eyes should be and plonked in photo-realistic ones including lashes, added texture to her lips, refined the blurred end of the eyebrow with directional hairs. I found it interesting that it reduced the iris size to something more realistic and created the faintest suggestion of teeth.

Below is a less impressive photo of my own DOT Shall. It was taken in poor lighting so it wasn’t very clear, so I put it through.

So to be honest, I could have done without hairy eyeballs :sweat But I appreciate the rest of the added clarity and noise reduction.

And this app can do a whole bunch of other stuff too, like colorising old photos and animating faces! Aaand that last one is quite off-putting when used on dolls, so I won’t share with the result, but you guys can give the apps a go with your dolly families and see how you go!

If you do try it, I thought it would be fun to share the results here! Whether it’s to enhance low-res photos, have a bit of fun, or just to see what your dolls might look like if they were human :nowords: Have fun if you do give it a go!

    2. These are really cool! I think I will try this if I ever get around to clearing space on my phone.

I reaaaally want to see the face animation though *puts on my Uncanny Valley spelunking gear* How much worse than eye mechanisms can it possibly be?

    3. Had to give this a try on one of my favourite photos. It made me look far more skilled at face ups than I am. :XD: So I’ll be using it again!

(Let me know if this image isn’t showing up. I tried hosting it from a private discord server which I’ve never done before.)

It almost gave the photo a sort of painted effect. I really like it.

EDIT: Just gave the animation feature a try on the same photo. Oh dear. Noooooo thank you hahaha.

    4. Wow - what charming, gorgeous ladies! <3 <3 I particularly like the Carina - reminds me of Tarja Turunen <3 <3 <3

    5. I know remini and use it for phone taken pictures, but I never thought of using with doll photos (mainly because I dont take their pictures with my crap phone). The one thing you mentioned about hairy eyeballs, is that sometimes remini glitches a bit, but I find it still pretty usable and fun!

    6. I have tried FaceApp's age filter on my dolls- it is definitely terrifying :XD:

    7. [IMG] I just downloaded remini and tried it. I don't seem to have it quite figured out yet. The face of my doll was greatly improved but not the body.[IMG] [IMG]

    8. The AI recognizes faces, so I think it is just not made to improve not facial things (it does a bit sometimes, but I guess thats being lucky)

    9. Oh, thanks for letting me know. I would have fussed for days trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Lol

    10. He looks awesome both before and after!

Haha yeah, when items on a face start moving independently of one another, things are bad

Yeah so far I haven’t had much luck with hands even on real people. They tend to come out with all the creases really exaggerated and weird. I really hope they work on that area next, since hands are the next most expressive thing after faces in a portrait!

    11. Yes!! I play with those too, all of those, it cracks me up so much.
I also tried Remini but didn't have very much luck with it, but it's probably due to my photo or something, it didn't seem to pick up her face very well--but then she was a colorless hairless blob at the time, so maybe I should try again.

    12. I used AI to create some steampunk images of my F60, Margot. Here's one of them, and I'm so happy with the designs that I'm thinking about making an outfit inspired by them.
(also I couldn't resist using this one as my avatar :XD:)

The app I used is called AI Mirror on Android.

    13. The offline / locally run AI image generators have gotten pretty good. This is using Fooocus run on my Windows 11 PC. So unlimited runs since it's just using my own hardware.

    14. WOW both are incredible (though honestly I love your original photo more).

    15. Thank you! I quite like the original better too. It is incredible how the models have advanced though.

Have you edited any more photos recently?

    16. I haven't lately, though I just took some photos of one of my other bjds that I'm itching to run through the software. :XD:
