A little thread about tan colours

May 20, 2017

    1. Souldoll's sandy brown is just absolutely gorgeous! Compared with my tan Fairyland doll, Souldoll's tan is a lot lighter and a lot less red-toned. It's just gorgeous!

    2. Anyone know if there is a resin match for Myou tan?
      Thanks so much!

    3. i love tan dolls! i have a volks sdm in sunlight, but like others have said it’s not as much tan as it is a few shades darker than their pure skin normal. it still ratiates a very nice warmth and creates a beautiful aura around the doll, but it’s still a few shades lighter than my own skintone.

as for all time favorites, haru casting’s maji tan line (normal, medium, and dark) gives me life! haven’t seen this resin in person but from the pictures, the colors look so rich, but still very soft! i’m obsessed! :D

    4. I love tan.

My first doll was Dollzone Megi in tan, though my current favorite is Luts realskin brown. Dollzone's old tan is a little on the "spray tan orange" end. I like the more milky coffee tones. Iplehouse realskin is pretty nice too.

Have also dyed one of my dolls to be tan because I bought a normal skin SSDF body like right before they started offering realskin brown nonlimited.

Gonna be getting and Myou big baby in coffee skin for my next doll.

    5. I love tan dolls and I'm happy to see companies starting to offer a wider variety of tan and brown skins in non-limited form. I have plans to get some tanned dolls but I have to have a plan for them first and right now I have a plan but no funds. For the moment I've been eyeing Little Monica's special "chocolate" and "caramel" ranges and they look pretty. I prefer the cool chocolate tone for what I have in mind. As for tan dolls I own, I have a sandy brown Souldoll Shaun and a coffee-skinned Resinsoul and while they have warmth to their skin that my pink and yellow dolls lack, I wouldn't call either colour "tan". My one true tanned doll is my Spiritdoll and he's gorgeous but maybe a bit more reddish/orange than I'd like if I were to pick it again. Though with the right faceup the tan matches the idea I had for him so I guess it works out.

    6. Love “tan” dolls although I don’t think the description covers the variety of natural skin tones well!
My favourite colour is Kaye Wiggs darkest tan as in my avatar, beautiful tone, silky finish, no marbling. I have Kaye’s Mikki in this colour too. I also like her coffee tan colour. It would be great to see even more variety of skin tones as in my real family of multi hues!

    7. I have a Dollzone Yuu and I LOVE the color of his skin, I also like Soom tans. They look like such a creamy brown rather than those grey muddy browns you find out there.

    8. I always wanted a tan doll but sadly i hasnt find 1 yet, i like bambicrony xmas tan colour, its like chocolate milk. :)

    9. My first doll was a much lighter "normal skin" color, and I felt like she often looked a bit washed out in pictures. My current girl has the Iplehouse Real Skin, and I love it! I feel like she looks so real in pictures and the coloring of photos looks so much softer. I'm still often worried about her resin turning green, which I've heard is a risk for darker resins, but I love how she looks.

    10. Tans can be so beautiful! I was a little skittish at first because I’ve heard about how some can turn green with age. I ended up seeing a Ringdoll in tan and I had to have him!

I also really like fairyland’s agra tan! I wish it was more widely available... their regular tan is excellent too but something about the richness of agra connects with me.

    11. I love tan dolls & have several of them. I love Limwha's tan but I have a number of older Luts dolls with tan resin & it has stayed nice over all this time. My old tan Narae has fade with time to a soft, warm color but she's French resin. I have several other companies' tan dolls & most have held up well. I'm craving a Fairyland tan Ante elf.

    12. I do like tan dolls and I like to have a bit of variety in my dolls too. Out of the two I have I think my older DZ Linlan, who's mellowed a little, has the prettier color. My Minifee is a little lighter than I'd like.

    13. I don't own any tan dolls - yet - but I think they're really beautiful. Having lurked around the hobby for a long time, it's awesome to see more and more companies offering tan skin as a regular option, and to see so many more shades than there used to be. The tan colours I personally prefer still seem a bit less common, though. I really love cooler midtone to dark browns, without much orange in them. I'm seriously considering putting an Aerial BJD on my wishlist just because I love the look of the "chocolate black" resin so much!

    14. I loved my Bambicrony Emily's tan so much that I changed the story all of my dolls are from to make that the default skintone, lol. It's beautiful warm, medium brown. Which meant I had to make my Migidoll Owen with the "normal" skintone someone with albinism, but that worked out well. Plus it worked well to self-limit the collection, since not many companies produce that exact color. Even Bambicrony! Their most recent tans seem much lighter. Luckily Iplehouse's light brown is pretty close so I was able to shell her mother.

Although, I'm paranoid they're gonna turn green (or yellow, depending?) so they live in the closet during the day.

    15. I love tan dolls mainly because I'm "tan." I prefer Harucasting & Iplehouse, because they offer the darkest tan colors regularly.

    16. It reeaaly depends on the doll! I love a nice light tan, and I love seing a darker tan properly executed.
But matching outfits and wigs for them feels soo much harder! Still, if pulled of properly they are gorgeous dolls.

I currently own a littlefee in Tan, and she is beautiful <3 She does need a non-blonde wig to better fit her. I don't like the blondes I have on her.

    17. I've been collecting BJDs for a long time. While I have pretty light-skinned dolls with classic BJD faces, I'm on the hunt for different looking dolls. Hence my growing interest in darker skinned dolls and those with face molds with less Caucasian or anime influences.

That and like @Spuggey and @AdanneO I'm also "tan" and would like more dolls to reflect that.

    18. I've ended up with a fair few different shades of tan in my crew, since I'm fond of a lot of the darker resins. I have Lati's tan... Soom's bronze and tawny... Volks Sunlight, Ebony and Shadow... Luts' Real Skin Brown... Both the older Cerberus Project tan and the more recent Fairyland versions... Forever Virginia's Honey, which is a very light tan... Resin Soul's coffee... Iple's current brown tan as well as Cocori's much older dark mocha-brown... and Doll Chateau/DollZone's evo-resin tan.

That last shade is the only one I'm not 100% satisfied with. It's got a pretty distinct orange undertone that I'm really hoping will mellow out in time. Of all the others, I think the Lati tan and Volks Ebony are my favorites. So far no one has turned green, but I'm pretty careful about light exposure with the darker resin members of the gang. I'm more paranoid about that with tanned dolls than I am with their peachy-colored siblings.

    19. My first two dolls were Souldoll's NS, but after getting a secondhand BF what-must-be white skin (she is white!), I realized that I like dolls with skin colors that are more natural. After a few months of considering, I've ordered my "last doll" in tan skin, from Spiritdoll.

Since I haven't actually seen any tan dolls in person, I'll admit I'm worried if I'll actually like it, and I'm worried about the color turning something weird over time, but I really really don't like my bright white doll, lol. I also do think it would have been nice had the doll companies thought of a different name for their darker colors, but I'm guessing Volks was first and Japan simply isn't a diverse country. (Like, if it really were tan, the arms and legs wouldn't be the same color as the body and there would be a tan line, unless you're tanning nude.)

    20. I like tan dolls because they photogenic and looks very sexy. Pygmalion Dolls tan one of my favorite tan tones.

    21. I adore tan dolls! I do not have a 'company' preference yet, but I definitely prefer a "tan" to just "natural skin" like I have seen some companies refer to as tan. Best example I can give for this is Granado. Granado's Tan, Sunshine, and Bronze colors look perfect to me. I like even darker colors too, but it has to be a perfect fit for a character I want the doll to represent.

    22. I find that these dolls are often so small that details just naturally stand out better on darker skintones and look more human as a result.

I'm one of those people who has a character first more often than not and then goes looking for a doll, so I don't often get to choose a doll to be of a certain colour vs. another. It's either fitting the character or its not. That being said, I think the majority of my characters are medium-to-dark toned, so I do find myself pondering "tan" skin a lot.

I've had Iplehouse's Special Real (lovely cooler/olive-r kind of brown), the old tan skin from Atelier Momoni (very rich dark brown), suntan (I think?) from Peakswoods (the name is a fitting description of that color), tan from Aimerai (deeper caramel-y sort of brown, which can also be sanded without marks!) and tan from LLT which was sort of a caramel but darker with more reddish hue. Right now I only have one doll, a Mydolling Heeah in the old Tan B skin, which I believe is darker than anything she offers now. It's a little bit warmer than Iple's Real Skin, but it's a wonderful color. I believe I bought one of the last Tan B Heeahs too.

I haven't tried any of the glow tan resins though, I bet they look amazing. Maybe there will be another doll or two in my future (eyeing a couple of Iplehouse FID's right now) that I can try in that more translucent quality. I don't really display my dolls (they live in their boxes when not in use) so I'm not to worried about them catching too much sun.

    23. I quite like tan dolls! Fairyland's tan is quite nice I think, I'd love to have a tan Minifee Chloe one day...

    24. @Dynamint I don't know if Spiritdoll has changed their tan much, but I have a tan Spiritdoll and it's a lovely caramel-y colour. It's very warm in person and it looks like a natural human skintone (though I find I'd prefer a cool blue tan for this character).

    25. I really like tan skin dolls, but it's a bit hard for me to judge from pictures if they're going to really be right for the characters that I want to get, so I've been a little gun-shy about getting one.

I've got at least 2 characters I want to shell that would require me to get tan skin, though. Latinx with heavy native ancestry... I want them to look a very certain way.

    26. I prefer tan (or darker) resin to the extremely pale shades. Tan in particular is nice, because it's versatile, and it tends to yellow less noticeably. Oriental/Copper/Tan shades seem to have more warmth and realism, which I find appealing. However, it depends on the doll. My first bjd was an MDR "Strawberry" Fang, and I think she's absolutely beautiful in her pale pinkyness. :chibi

The only real downside to tan is that it seems to be hard to photograph. It can be hard to shop from photographs online for that reason. Even on the website of the company or creator of the doll in question, no two pictures of the resin may look the same.

    27. I'm a 'one' doll person, but if I were the kind of owner who did doll pairings, i'd enjoy pairing dolls of different skintones from light to dark. I'd also like to pair feminine guys with masculine girls, but that's another thread :wiggle

    28. I really like the tan colors- my second doll is a tan Myou Silvia who is absolutely gorgeous. She's also the only tan doll I've seen in person, so I can't really compare Myou's tan to other companies.
If one thinks of the doll's skin as the blank canvas of a painting- what we put on that canvas is framed and interpreted differently by that canvas. A particular piece of clothing may look and feel different depending on the doll's skin/size/face/wig/etc... and having a variety of different looking dolls means one has more canvases to play with... I also like putting cold colors and warm colors in contrast. Most skin tones are on the warm side though- so lights and darks are the next best thing.
Only problem I have with these darker shades (as others have pointed out) is that most people aren't just one shade of a color. Myou's tan color is only slightly darker than the color of my arms, but she is the same tan all over, and well, I have a really bad farmers tan, so the effect is wildly different.
It'd be awesome to see more natural pigmentation patterns- and while I'm sure this can be achieved with a really extensive body blush, it seems like a lot of work for someone who hasn't developed that skill set yet. More amusing would be to see dolls with realistic tans/tan lines (and sunburns). :XD:

    29. I really like tan dolls but I think Luts’ real brown is not really the right colour I’m looking for. Hoping to get a tan volks doll one day and see if that matched better.

    30. I currently have a doll with RSW from Luts and another one on the way with RSW too. I think I tend to lean towards the ghostly white dolls because as a kid I was always made fun of for my terribly pale skin and seeing beautiful dolls with ghost-like skin makes me feel better about my appearance. I want to diversify my dolls and try new skin tones but I don't see too many people on youtube ordering tan dolls and I'm scared to go purely off brand photos since I know it can look different in person. If any of you have tan dolls that you love the skin color of let me know what company you bought them from so hopefully I can fall in love with one too!!

    31. I don't know how much this will help, because her skin tone is discontinued, but I adore my Supiadoll Noa's tan. They replaced it with another tan that also looks beautiful, but here's the old tan for reference. You never know when one will crop up on the marketplace I guess.

    32. Omg!!! Her skin is so lovely I'll for sure take a look at their new tan thank you!

    33. I think Withdoll has beautiful darker tones, but theyre not offered regularly. :<

I looooove Brown Tan UV in particular.

    34. Iplehouse also offers a lot of lovely tan options!

I will say that I do NOT reccomend tan from Dollzone or Doll Chateau. I love the two companies but they have a very bad track record for their tans being super inconsistent. Some batches will turn out spectacular and then the next batch will be this terrible fake tan orange color that is just so awful. They have discontinued their tans several times and then later started offering tan again after finding a new formula but I have seen that turn out with mixed results several times so in my eyes ordering a tan from them is just too much of a wildcard. And I would only buy a secondhand tan from them so I would know what I was getting agead of time.

    35. While I'm not sure I would call it tan, as its more of an olivey/tan-ish normal resin, I absolutely love Souldoll's Sandy Brown. It is so beautiful in person.

    36. Omg those are all such gorgeous colors!!! I wish all brands had that kind of array of colors!

      • x 1
    37. This is why I was scared and was asking about this! Thank you for letting me know since Dollzone and Doll Chateau are two of my favorite companies.

    38. I can tell you 2 tans I do NOT care for as much, and I have one tan doll from each:5Stardoll and AoD. They are too olive and also very shiny without work and the latter photographs olive to the point of feeling greenish, I always color correct his skin to be less green. I guess I just prefer more ruddy tans. I have only seen photos but I will be trying some hybrids of 2 of my tan bodies with Alchemic Labo Paradise skin Unoa face plates and hands, I really like all the owner photos I've seen of those so far, and with them, 2 particular characters of mine will have their proper skin tones, thus ending my experiments with tans!

    39. I'm not going to lie I do sort of regret not getting DoD Kalix in tan. I really liked the Dream of Doll tan colour, and had planned to eventually get Camine in it but the company disappeared before I had the chance :[

I'm actually really grateful for this thread because it'll give me a chance to check out all these recommendations!

    40. Island Doll has several tans. I think they are all lovely, but I personally only have the darkest one. Granado is also a good company for tans.

    41. Tan is my favorite skin color ever! The darker the better:lol: My favorites are Soom brown tan and bronze, they're so awesome. I have no idea why I'm so crazy about that skin, it just seems really beautiful to me, though I know people who dislike tan dolls for some reason and never buy them.

    42. I love tan skin on dolls. I’m not sure why someone wouldn’t like tan unless it’s from one of the companies that makes it very orange. I like iplehouse tan a lot because they offer darker shades rather than just a tan in general.

    43. I love brown resins, but I have no idea how to properly photograph them. My tan dolls always end up lightened in photos, it irritates me so much. But I think It's probably just a product of using a shitty phone camera and being a photography novice...

My favorite Tan (that I actually have) is actually Clover Doll's tan! It's beautiful. I feel like it's slightly darker than my other tans, and slightly cooler. I'd like to someday get my hands on Island Doll's dark tan color, it's really lovely. I also... actually want a doll in the translucent orangey Dollzone tan someday too :sweat it's certainly not naturalistic but I still think it's pretty

    44. I'm so glad you mentioned this! I was looking at getting a Luts boy in light tan skin but I was paranoid about marbling, bubbling, discoloration, etc. I'm happy to see that overall Luts seems to have nice tan skin that lasts!

    45. I LOVE tan colored dolls! Most tans are such beautiful and rich colors. The background and skin color of a character is so important as it represents a part of who they are. Having a wide range of skin colors available is very helpful when you want to get the character just right!
As for company, I don't think I have one I prefer over the other. I think all the tans are amazing! :D

    46. I love tan dolls because of the variety of tans there are out there, I am especially fond of Lillycat's various shades of tans. Tan dolls are so unique and stand out in a good way, they are also nice to have if your dolls character is of a certain ethnicity where darker skin is needed, it can really help bring them to life. I also like for some reason that most companies tan colours aren't always consistent throughout different batches, makes me feel like I got something special haha.

    47. Oh, tans are my absolute FAVORITE dolls. As a tan person myself, I find that it's just a good look on dolls, and in general! I'm not as familiar with all of the BJD companies as most are, but the tan dolls I do know are Iplehouse and Switch and I really love both. Loongsoul has a tan option too, but I haven't seen it on an actual doll yet. Although, there is a doll of theirs that I was looking at who has a tan resin option, so...maybe eventually I'll be seeing it in person

    48. I love tan colors, no matter light or dark. But it is not the easiest type of skin to take care of. Personally I think not all clothes and wigs work on tan skin like on normal skin, but if it works, it will look stunning.

      • x 1
    49. I put together my first complete tan doll this year! Never thought I would do a hybrid as my first, but it's worked out very well (both artists use Haru Casting, so the color variation is very slight). I want more tan dolls in the future and wish that I could work up the nerve to dye some of my older dolls who weren't available in a darker tone, but I think I will just look towards newer releases for that.

    50. Can you tell me if Little Rebel matches Fairyland Tan please❤️

    51. Unfortunately, I sold my tan fairyland girl a couple of years before I bought the tan Little Rebel Head, so I never got to compare the two. I don’t think they would be a great match, though. The fairyland doll I had was more of a chocolate milk color, and the LR heads I’ve owned are slightly more reddish tan. The FL Doll was from 2014, I’m not sure if they’ve changed their color since then.

I have my LR head on a Luts brown skin body and while it’s not a perfect match, it’s pretty close. LR is slightly more red than Luts, but I think the hybrid works. If you’re curious, you can go to my profile, look under the Dolls tan and look at Tate. I’m sorry I’m not more helpful with your question, though. :(

    52. I love tan dolls and have been wanting one for the longest time. I have one on the way so I'm very excited :blush

    53. No you where really helpful! I really appreciate your help❤️❤️❤️

    54. @Pinkhairedprincess
FL and the current LR tan resin do match within a good range. Here are a few other comparisons.

    55. Thank you SO much!! This is so helpful! Hugs!

    56. It's good to see more diverse skin tones in BJDs nowadays, as opposed to the turn of the century when the only choices were white skin ("normal") and corpse-bled-white skin ("beauty white"). I'm a goth and my skin isn't that white!

My tiny Chaeri had tan skin, but when I reshelled her I went for normal skin because it suits her character better.

    57. Tan is my favourite! Would anyone have a comparison of Dollzone tan and Myou tan? Looking for a hybrid body and it's a toss up between the two! Thanks!

    58. I have a tan Myou doll on the way, but my only Dollzone doll is NS :sweat Hopefully someone else will be able to provide an example, I'm curious as well!

    59. I love to see dolls in a range of colors that mirror actual skin tone. I especially like to see a range of dark colors and not just one brown color, for example.

    60. I’m a fan of luts real skin brown.
