A little thread about tan colours

I love tan colored dolls! There's so much versatility and...well, personally, I love darker-skinned people IRL.

I'm not really sure if I have a favorite company color though...

Of the companies I've seen, Iple's Real Skin is beautiful, as is their Light Brown. I love Fairyland's kind of red-ish brown tan skin, as well. It kind of reminds me of Native American skin colors, tbh. Bobobie's original tan skin was lovely, but I'm not sure if they still make it.

Umm... trying to think... I'm not sure what other company tans I've seen are...

Tan skin is lovely and I really wish more people had them!

 

I love Island Doll's dark tan (you can see my girl with it in my avatar). So many other tans are really light or orangey. But I really like those dark, cool tan colors. The only annoying part is the price of color matching the body I want.

 

I love tan dolls! I also find it's easier to see and photograph all the lovely sculpting detail on darker resin colours because it reflects less light.

I think the Luts tan is my favorite; it's a really nice colour.

I had two tan dolls previously. I was annoyed with the very noticeable discoloration from the company's seam line sanding on one (a DikaDoll) and ended up selling the doll because the sanding marks irritated me (poor thing looked like she had severe burn scars; not a look I was going for). I'm a little hesitant to buy any more tan dolls due to this past issue, but if I can be guaranteed a future tan doll won't have bad sanding scars, I'd love to get another.

 

They are beautiful what is not to like.

I like the brown tan UV and rosy brown UV from Withdoll, milk cocoa skin from Souldoll, tan skin from Luts, dark tan from Island Doll, light brown and ebony from Iplehouse, Pipo's tan, Supia's tan and Dollzone's tan, suntan by Peakswoods.

I'm probably forgoting some.

It make me want to have at last one doll of each, having focus is hard.

 

When I started in this hobby, I really enjoyed the normal/pink skin resin color dolls had until I bought my lovely Iplehouse EID Aurora in realskin.

Looking at the color of her caramelized resin, I realized that I could identify with a skin tone that was closest to mine.

Not only that, but I also enjoyed taking cellphone pictures of Aurora.

 

I've owned a lot of tan dolls: Little Rebel, Luts, BlueBlood Doll, Jie Doll, Iplehouse, Fairyland, ResinSoul. Impldoll, Islandoll, dollzone, Angel of Dream, April Story...and probably several others I've currently forgotten.

Of all of those, I think Little Rebel, Jie Doll and BlueBlood were the prettiest, in my opinion. Pretty brown (not orange) color, no sanding marks or seam line visible, didn't turn green.

 

I love tan dolls! I wish they weren't so expensive. I love the souldoll cocoa skin. I wish pink wasn't considered the "normal" skin as, A. There is no such thing as "normal" colored skin, and B. I wish you didn't have to shell out an extra $50 dollars to have a little diversity in your collection.

 

Love them Right now I have a Merry Doll Round Ophelia in cookie skin and it's beautiful. I also have two Volks SDMidis in sunlight on order, so I'll have to see how that looks in person ^-^
I really want a couple of darker tan dolls too though. I LOVE MDR's new dark cocoa skin.

 

I have an Iplehouse light brown head, ebony EiD Kamau ands Soom Vesuvia body in bronze, as well as a dollshe caramel brown boy on order, and a ringdoll tan doll on order. I love angell-studio tan as well, and I've owned a dollshe pale tan head which was a nice colour. The Soom is a bit orange, but there are some awesome tans out there.

 

I haven't yet gotten a tan doll, but I'm looking forward to adding both of Resinsoul's tan/brown resins to my collection eventually. I just really want to have a good spread of different resin tones in my collection-- and I want a couple of specific characters to be able to be shelled and cosplayed, which calls for darker resin.

 

Well, I'm mixed race and I love the variety of colours BJDs come in. I'm collecting the main characters from my novels and the two so far are pale, but I have a few others who range from Mediterranean tanned (who might be a commission or sculpted by me, as I've never seen a doll that looks enough like him!) to black, so I'll be getting them as well at some point!

 

I really really like tan dolls!
Currently I'm waiting for my first tan doll, who is a minifee by fairyland. Their sculpts are just super cute and elegant.
Also the fairyland tan is one of my favorite tan tones, since i think it looks very fantasy-like if it is combined with light hair~
At least that is what i plan to do with her^^
I'm very excited to work with her since i only have one with light skintone yet.

 

Oh, I love tan dolls! My resin soul Dong is kind of a gray-ish tan. It looks okay. My DragonSoul Upsilon, though, has a beautiful shade of tan. It's freaking flawless. There's just so much variety in tan skin dolls from company to company, I love it!

 

I really like tan dolls, I have a love-hate relationship with how many shades of 'tan' there are. I love that there are a lot of variations, but it makes hybriding a lot harder

I only have 3 different tan dolls so far, but I like all of them. My current preference is leaning towards Soom's Tawny right now, but I'll need to see more tans irl before I can make a proper decision haha

 

Oh yes, I like tan colored dolls! I have a couple tanned dolls myself and gotta say the skin tone is very lovely! They are also easier to photograph because they won't look too washed-out compared to white skin and some normal skin dolls.

So far, my favorite tanned skins are Iplehouse's Real Skin, Soom's Tawny Skin and Switch's Mocha Brown skin. I haven't own or seen other companies' tanned skin dolls in person before, but based on companies' photos there are some like Souldoll's that look nice too! Maybe I might be tempted in future to get those?

 

I love tan dolls, but I only have one (a Volks Sunlight skin boy). His tan is very light and I'd love to own a truly dark, dark tan doll. Dark tan environmental resin (such as Island Doll) is particularly lovely

 

Yes, I have two light tan dolls and one that I would say is medium tan, and they are gorgeous. I love how they photograph! I would like to add one more tan doll to my collection, but it would have to be a Soom Idealian with fantasy parts (hooves preferred) but what I want doesn't exist yet. All I can do is wait and hope!

 

I love tans and browns, the doll market is so saturated with pink, yellow and white dolls and it's taken years for many companies to get around to making BROWN which annoys me, several companies still only do "generic peachy tone" and i find it so restrictive.
I mean, people come in all shades, so missing one pretty major skin tone like brown really really ticks me off. It feels wrong.

From a creative perspective as well, I tend toward either fantasy tones or darker skin tones in my characters anyway, so it drives me insane that so many company's idea of "tan" is "faintly darker olive tone" rather than actually a light brown colour.
I want human skin tones that aren't just "white person" you know? I like diversity in my dolly collection and I don't want to be restricted in what should be a fairly obvious addition (I accept not doing fantasy tones, but if you're making human dolls I kinda feel like you SHOULD produce a range of human skin tones beyond pinky peach and yellowy peach)

I only own one tan doll currently, a resinsoul ming in dark tan and it's a lovely milk chocolate sort of colour which is perfect. It's very nice and even as well.

I'm trying to shell four ocs of mine who all happen to be "tan" skintones though, and whoo ee it's awkward.
I'm looking at Souldoll sculpts and their tan just doesn't seem to be tan enough for me, it's sort of "went out in the sun for a few hours" tan rather than a natural mid tone brown that i'd like.
I'm thinking i'd have to dye them to get them dark enough, bah.

Ideal world, we'd be able to get every sculpt from every company in any dang colour lol, or at least a broad range of human colours. I mean a lot of people don't ever bother with blue or green dolls but there's gotta be loads of people who want properly tan, olive skinned or actually black characters right? It kinda bugs me so many of my non white characters are so dang hard to shell because of their skin tones more than their facial features. Like COME ON.

Still, it's better than it was back when I first stumbled into the world of bjds. I mean back then it really was 3 options. White, pink, yellow.
That's really restrictive and I find really limiting. I like colour, I like options. I like options that aren't limited time events too, that bugs the heck outta me. And that don't cost the earth (I get that darker colours will cost more to cast, but sometimes the extra cost is a bit too steep I feel.)

I'm pleased there's a lot of companies who do offer tan skin, and in a variety of shades of it. I'm just cranky because the sculpts I need for certain ocs don't come in said shades lol.

 

Granado has some beautiful tans and browns. One of my favorites is their chocolate, which looks just like the name.
I also like Supia's dark tan, more of a burnt sugar color.

 

Most of my dolls are tan, but I think my two favourites are Volks' Shadow (my Claude the Beast is that colour) and that single version of tan that Souldoll did for Tarot Rouse (a darker colour than their usual sandy brown). They both have a nice glow to them.

 

I always want doll with dark skin! Tan dolls are not very popular in Asia I guess ?? so I rarely saw any in person. The only time I saw one in person was a Volks Sunlight during a doll meetup, which didn't look well, really tan to me...Iplehouse has the best tan dolls I've ever seen but the extra cost is way too high (esp. when the dolls themselves are already expensive enough)

I've recently started to grow really fond of tan skin on dolls, and I realized how different "tan" looks, depending on the dollmaker. I know I like darker, more natural shades of tan, but I'm curious about what other people prefer. So what's the best tan skin in your opinion?

EDIT: By "tan" I also include dark brown!

 

I prefer more brown toned than orange or red. My favorites are BlueBlood Doll (only limited tans), Soom brown tan, Little Rebel, and Luts. If we're going past tan to dark browns, then I really like Impldoll dark tan, Iplehouse ebony, and Jie doll chocolate (discontinued). If you like something just barely darker than most normal skin, but still not quite tan, Elfdoll Homme skin and IslandDoll neutral beige are nice.

I don't have a specific example on hand, but I've always preferred the ashier tones, cooler browns and tans. In my opinion, the warmer ones too easily become VERY red in certain lighting. Not my favourite aesthetic, but I also don't own any dark dolls. I just like looking at them

 

@CloakedSchemer Ohh I love the Iplehouse ebony skin! It's definitely among my favorite tans. Also the soom brown tan is awesome as well!

@Demiurgo The Cerisedoll dark tan is actually one of my favorite! Its undertones are slightly too red for my taste, but in the right lighting it looks absolutely perfect.

@thorn I love cooler browns as well, especially the really dark ones (like the Iplehouse ebony, for example) It's true that warmer dark tans can look reddish in certain lighting. But I still like them a lot ^^

Adori moist brown (Batchix Clever Little B)

I also have a Soom Afi and Chrom, a newer Clever in Adori's deep tan, and a MerryDollRound Zuri in chocolate milk on the way.

It depends on what colour the character should be. Unlike most, I dig the orange tans. They're strange and unique. But it's nice to have more natural browns. Especially for characters with a softer or stern look.

Dollshe's pale tan is an amazing colour too. I don't have dolls in it anymore, but it's unlike any tan out there. Would love to have an excuse to buy a really deep tan sometime, like Iplehouse ebony or MerryDollRound's dark cocoa.

 

I like a warm light tan. I have or had tans from varoius companies and I really got to say I love Luts' light tan the most it's such a lovely color~~~ Can't get enough of it

 

Luts has beautiful shades of tan. Their real skin brown is my favorite, personally.

 

I reall like RSDoll's tan! Specifically on the sculpt New Evan, but just in general I think their tan is super pretty!

 

I prefer cooler tans to warm ones. As @thorneless said, the warmer ones can easily look too red. Fairyland tan is especially photogenic, even though it's beautiful in real life too. To me, the most gorgeous resin tone ever is Souldoll sandy brown, which I guess counts as "tan" even though it's really just a little bit darker than their normal skin.

 

Does anyone know if Iplehouse's peach gold is a tan hue? It sounds really beautiful

Guess i didnt dig hard enough to find pictures. It is, a VERY light brown with subtle warm undertones. I actually like it better without their orangey body blushing!

@thorneless I love Iplehouse's peach gold! Even if it's a very light tan, I find it natural and good looking.

 

@Zukohere I feel like the peach gold and many rs are actual "tans", where a lot of what is marketed as tan is much darker than what would normally classify as tan, but that's just me being word picky. But at the same time... I wish there was some kind of consistency so you would know if you're getting a slightly steeped tea or burnt molasses when ordering a tan skin.

 

@Zukohere I feel the same! I use the word "tan" because that's just what most companies use, but since "tan" ranges from very light brown to dark brown, they should definitely rethink their labels lol

 

I admit, I haven't seen very many tan resin dolls in person, and only own 3 myself (one of which I dyed), so my opinion is limited. However, I LOVE Loongsoul's tan. The color is very beautiful and natural looking, and the resin itself is sooooo smooth. It is a lighter tan which also probably adds to why I like it so much as it reminds me a bit of my own skin tone. Even though we call darker resin tan, there's still a huge difference between "naturally light brown" and "light skin which has been tanned", and I think Loongsoul fits into the former category beautifully.

 

I adore Iplehouse light brown and Ebony, and now also want a doll on Fairyland tan. I don't know which doll yet, but I want one... Im Also in love with dollshe's honey tans, but especially their honey caramel brown, which was the reason I ordered in their 'last' 18m sale.

I really love tan dolls, and about half my dolls are varying shades of tan. I'm not sure I have a favorite, since part of what I like about tan is how different they all are. Soom's bronze is a bit more creamy than the more red toned Fairyland tan. The darkest tan I've seen in person is Lume's ebony, which is a rich chocolate color.

 

I have Iplehouse SRS dolls and love that color. I have one light brown and do not like that color as much as too clay pot looking to me.

 

I am a huge fan of Supia Dolls tan skin color, Soom's Tawny skin, as well as Granado's tan skin options.

 

I am an Iplehouse devotee, I really like their lovely golden brown " Real Skin" and the slightly darker " Light Brown", I have dolls in both of those colors and really love them... I haven't seen their new glow skin colors in person yet.

 

I love Granado's tans. I have one in bronze, one in sunshine and one in tan. They're all beautiful!
A close second is Dollshe's pale tan. I have a Pabo in pale tan and it's a lovely rich brown. It suits his character very well.

 

I like ImplDoll's dark tan and DollShe tan colors.

 

I like the doll leaves wheat color it's not to light and not too dark. The only thing is they don't offer it anymore.

 

Two of my tan dolls are actually custom colors from Impldoll so, although I absolutely love the rich reddish hue of the one and the medium brown of the other, they're not Impldoll's official tans. I do love them though, regardless.

In general I just love the fact that a lot more companies offer a rainbow of options in tans these days. Especially Granado, Iplehouse and Dollshe. And, speaking of Dollshe, I got my one boy in their Honey Caramel Brown, and the official pictures on their website don't do it any justice. It's a nice, rich dark brown without an annoying orangey tint to it. I just love it

 

i like tan dolls because i like variety in my collection. as others have said people come in all different skin tones so shouldn't dolls? on the other hand i have heard that the colored resins tan and darker are harder to produce and more likely to have odd colored streaks in them. they are also more likely to go green over time, which explains why some companies choose not to offer them, or only offer them in limited editions.

as far as which companies tans i like? fairyland, luts and irreal doll top my list. i like the lighter shades from iplehouse, but i have a light brown doll from there which is a good example of how tans can go green. it wasn't out in bright light but it has gone from a lovely milk chocolate to an ugly olive greenish -brown. i could live with that if it hadn't changed color really unevenly too.

 

I like tan colored dolls, but I only want the one because a tan doll will fit her character. According to the late, great Ray Bradbury, Martians are dark-skinned with golden eyes and...well, with "russet-colored hair," as he put it. I intend for this doll to be my interpretation of Ylla, a character from "The Martian Chronicles," and no resin color will do but tan.

 

I prefer the look of 'real' tones to 'tan'. Some 'tan' can look rather dark for the sort of tone I would expect when someone says tan.

But, saying that, I love my Impldoll Martin head I got secondhand in tan. He's maybe a little dark for the sunkissed character I have in mind, but I might be able to make him work. I need good humidity to do the face-up. But, he looks stunning without his paint-job, and it'd be hard to part with him now that I've got him. I mean, I pretty much screamed the character's name internally when I got him. He's a gorgeous man, without a body...

But, my favourite is Iplehouse Real. I believe it's the tone they used for the company photos of Eric, my absolute dream doll, and it is a beautiful olive-skinned tone. Sort of Mediterranean, maybe Middle-Eastern skin. Or, their Peach Gold for that light sun-kissed glow.

 

Tan and dark skin tones are beautiful in doll form and real life. They are simply lovely to me.

My favorite company resins include Bambicrony's tan (a cool-yet-rich hue in person) and Harucasting's ebony. I own a MYOU doll in coffee and she is also a wonderful shade. I dyed one of my boys using iDyePoly sandstone and he is a gorgeous tan with a copper undertone.

Other companies' resin I have on my wishlist include LUTS RSB, AquariusDoll tan, Impldoll dark tan, Spiritdoll tan, and Bluefairy's baked skin.

 

I love Atelier Momonies Cocoa skin! Its soooo pretty.

 

I really want to have a tan skin doll to add to my crew. The kind of tan that I really like is Switch's Mocha Brown, and I have been eyeing on for a while. Unfortunately, their sculpts are not what I am looking for and matching tan skins are hard so I will just put this in my wishlist.

 

Iplehouse's "light brown" skin is hands down my favorite. I have 4 dolls in it and it's just so stunning!!! I also adore Luts tans.

 

Oooh, I really appreciate this thread! (As well as the other one linked!) I've been trawling through companies for months looking for dark-skinned dolls, so these recommendations make my life much easier

Of course, there's still the issue of some dolls not being available in darker skin colors even if the company usually offers it, but it's better than nothing I guess I wish tan resin weren't so hard to make (or so I've heard).

 

I haven't seen that wide a range of companies tans in person, but of those I've seen, Soom Bronze and Lumedoll Bronze and Ebony are my favorites. Iplehouse tans are pretty too. Just from online pictures I'd like to have dolls in Luts tan colors.

I love Switch’s mocha brown. It’s a nice cooler shade of brown. I had a mocha brown Rusi and he has the most gorgeous skin tone and looks great in photos.

Iplehouse ebony looks gorgeous in photos but I’ve never seen one in person, so I can’t testify. I’d love to see one in real life, but iplehouse sculpts are not for me so I’ll likely never buy them

I love darker skin tone dolls, but a lot of them look too orange or green/yellow...I don’t particularly want to own a doll with spray tan look ^^;

 

I only have two colors of tan from one company, Soom's brown tan and tawny so that's all I have to compare. I personally prefer the brown tan of my Jethro; it's a bit darker than the tawny and has a rich, warm tone that is really lovely.
