Just For Fun A Baker's Dozen

Aug 16, 2017

    1. :clover:clover:clover Which doll in your collection is your ‘bonus’ doll—or the one you didn’t plan for, or came through unusual circumstances? :clover:clover:clover

    2. I don't have any good pictures of her, but that'd definitely be my little Doll-Leaves Acorn (creatively named "Acorn"). I tried a while back to get one of my friends into the hobby, and she ended up buying Acorn from a dealer because she met the combination of "inexpensive" and "appealing." She'd planned to try out aesthetic work, and disassembled Acorn to blush her, but found sealing the parts and trying to handle all the pieces frustrating, and then couldn't quite remember how to get her back together, so she shoved her pieces back into her box and left her alone for a while before finally deciding the hobby wasn't quite for her the way she'd hoped it would be, and that she wanted to sell Acorn.

I offered to restring her and get the photos taken, and that's when we discovered one of her pieces had gone missing. I had no sign of it in her box, and she had no sign of it in her house, and as small as it was, we figured it was gone for good. She left Acorn with me while she tried to figure out what to do, and ultimately decided "She wasn't that expensive, and you can probably fix her, so why don't you just keep her?"

She's still missing the part (one of her wrist ball pieces), but I've got a replacement on order from the company at last, and the rest of her is assembled again. She's hanging out nude and with an ill-fitting wig in the "miscellaneous" section of my doll cabinets for now, waiting for the wrist piece so I can paint her up and make her into a little fall fairy. I even have a foam "diorama" pumpkin I'm planning to make into a little house for her! Definitely a doll I wouldn't have picked myself, and not one that quite fits into my existing groups or plans, but she's a cute little thing and I do think I'll have fun with her now that I've finally gotten her into mostly one piece. :)

    3. HA! I've not ordered him yet, but I will be next week - it will be my Souldoll Vito YunGl (ie, SHINee's Key). I never had ANY interest in the Vitos, too small for my group - but this guy looks like he will look good w/my Volks Kanata as a buddy. Totally not on my list, not planned, off the wall LOL But I just love him & it's KEY!!!! LOL

    4. I guess for me, that would be JinChan. I just ordered him...I never wanted a full set....thats what I told myself :D and there he was!
Also the tiny I ordered...originally I thought of sticking to the MSD-size but somehow he fit and had his justification...

    5. That would be Dream High Studio Aldou. I've wanted a tiny goblin lady for a while despite the fact (or perhaps because of the fact) that she wouldn't fit in with my SDs at all, but no sculpt fit. I finally gave up, figuring that there wouldn't be anything suitable on the market for a while. Then Aldou came out. The doll was very limited and I only had a day and a half to decide. I tried to lie to myself and say I would wait, but as soon as I saw the picture I knew deep down I was sunk.

So now I am waiting for my only tiny, my only limited, my only non-human doll to come home.

    6. Definitely Guórén, my beloved Granado Michael. I had no intention of shelling out his character for at least a year after I got my first doll. But when Granado revealed his promo pictures several months after, I fell in love at first glance. After a few days of thinking and budgeting, I took the plunge, and he arrived on the last day of my honeymoon -- which is extra sweet.

    7. My current biggest outlier isn't here yet, but that'll be my Nadya, a Dika Doll Monica head on a Doll-Leaves body. I've had the character for four years but, as she's from a short story, never intended to shell her. But I was talking to some friends one evening and brought up shelling her and her dad, then went looking for sculpts... and guess what head Mint on Card had in stock, for reduced pricing? So I bought her about twenty minutes after deciding to get her. Then, for a lark, I decided to make her a hybrid! I have no idea how it's going to play out, but I'm excited! :)

(Her Dad will also be an outlier because I said I would never get a 70cm doll, but here I am.)

    8. My Bobobie Weylin - I got him as part of a lot of 4 Bobobie dolls. I really just wanted the Pixie but the seller was leaving the hobby and wanted to sell them quickly as a lot and I got them for a good price (they were styled as a family, two 1/3 size and two 1/4). I've since sold the other two. Tbh I'm not sure if I'll keep him as he doesn't really fit with my collection, he's nice but he's been in the box pretty much since I got him.

    9. For me it's Liam, my Lumedoll Blaze. He's my smallest doll and, unlike most of my resin folks, didn't have a pre-existing character. I just fell in love with his face and I really liked the idea of having a mature 1/6 doll and I just..had to have him :XD: He's the only impulse purchase I've ever made that's worked out.

    10. I won Magpie, my Domuya Miki, as a door prize when I attended BJDC a few years back. I definitely didn't plan on her and would never have gotten her otherwise but suddenly there she was! She's still not quite in step with the rest of my crew, but I love her quirkiness :D

    11. That would probably be Tenshitenshi for me! He's not here with me yet, but he's a secondhand custom dyed/painted Pipos Cheshire and I hope he'll be here really soon! I didn't plan for his character at all, but as soon as I saw him on the MP I just had to have him. So now he's a guardian spirit for my selkie brothers! I'm really excited to work with him and make his outfit, I feel like he's just gonna be the perfect size, and with those precious teeth~ So psyched!

    12. It's hard to pick just one for this! It would have to be a toss up between Erica and Parker.

My sister bought Parker's first shell for me as a surprise birthday gift, I had no idea she did so until he arrived one day. I didn't know where to put him in my story, and just sort of worked him in as a sort of 'accessory child' to my newest guy. Now, Parker is one of my main characters, even though he's grown out of that shell since then.

Erica came to me as a trade offer. I had been wanting a girl but made no plans for one. I was selling a doll, someone agreed to buy him, then had an emergency and couldn't pay for him, but offered her to me as a trade. I took it as a sign that the girl floating around in my thoughts was meant to be her.

    13. I won Kyo, my Dollclas Kien, in the DOA 9th Anniversary photo challenge! I never would have bought him. I had a 70 cm doll once, and decided SDs were just too much for me. But here he is, mine forever! He has such a sweet face, I intended to repaint it soon. Very happy to have him!

    14. That would be Narise, my Impldoll Simon. I ordered an SD Idol-sized doll from Impldoll during their anniversary sale one year and was able to pick a free YoSD. I had no plans to get a YoSD or shell any of the child characters at that point so I just picked a cute one and made my order. During the wait, I decided that the doll would be Narise, one of the younger children in the stories, and at the same time, I decided I'd have to shell the other little ones as well.

So that extra doll wound up being an extra five dolls. Oops.

    15. Wanda Doll chateau, I didn't imagine one day I'd buy her. I'm very happy with this purchase XDD

    16. Ahhh, my most unplanned doll was Pommie, my Minifee Celine! I originally purchased her just for her body since I had a floating head that needed one... but when she arrived, she let me know she wasn't leaving! Her character just blossomed and this is her now:

    17. I don't know if he counts because he's classified as a companion doll, but I was given a DollZone Egg as a Christmas gift from a dear friend last year. Poor little Felix is still blank, but he enjoys hanging out with my other dragons (DollZone Moon and Cuartos Dolls Darkhorn).

    18. I briefly mentioned this in another thread, but my Miro Doll Yaya is not a doll I planned for. I had been admiring Miro Doll Rain for quite some time, and when I went to order him there was a promotion going on which allowed me to select a 1/4 head for free with my purchase. I was torn between Yaya and Lili, but I went for Yaya in the end because I felt she gave off a more edgy vibe.

I didn't order a body for her right away because I wanted to see the head in person first. When the head arrived with my Rain order, I thought she was super cute, so I ordered a body for her shortly after. And that's how I ended up with two BJDs instead of one. ^_^

    19. I bought a white skin Peakswoods Dandy body for a head that I had floating for several years. It ended up not matching the head well, so I got him a different body, and I considered selling the Dandy body, but.... I just couldn't do it! I loved it so much! I could have bought a PW head for it... but my favorite sculpt was Tristan, and I was determined to get him in blue-grey (which I did, later XD). The body sat around... and then I decided... what if it just didn't have a head?

That's how I ended up with this guy. :wiggle

    20. For me it's my first Soom. I've been in the hobby for seven years, and liked Soom but thought I was immune, as in all that time, no Soom bjds. Then last June, I finally succumbed and bought the Tiny Gem cat version of Puss & Boots. He looks so much like our cat Phoebe! He's not here yet, but he has inspired me to get back into airbrushing again. Oh, his name is Pascal, a more glamorous version of rascal.

    21. Mine is Pansy, my Volks F-29 MSD. I had an unexpected day off because my city was flooding, and I was worried about my students, so I was comforting myself by "just browsing" the Mandarake website. She jumped into my cart. It was pure impulse. After my sanity returned, I guess I regretted buying her. She's really not my style, and her body's screwy legs drive me crazy. But I have had fun cleaning her up and rehabilitating her, so I'm keeping her for now.

I named her after Ophelia's speech in Hamlet when she's passing out flowers, "And there is pansies, that's for thoughts." She's my reminder to give every purchase careful thought and watch my impulse buying.

    22. My first full doll was totally unplanned. I just happened to see April Story's 40% sale where there's a free head when you get a body :aeyepop: Too wallet-friendly to give up and I love how the body looks. I was actually planning to use his body for another doll head I was hunting for but the more I played with him the more I like him. I'm so glad I decided to get him:whee:

    23. My most unplanned doll is still just a head without a body. I regularly watch Anne Pecaro's YouTube channel and she was selling some dolls. I was NOT planned to buy anything, just looking (famous last words hee hee). She was selling a Littlefee Soom fairy event head with a wonderful faceup. I melted when I saw it. I hadn't even planned to ever get a Littlefee of any kind, but I fell in love at first sight. Now I need to save up for a body. SIGH

      • Cake Cake x 1
    24. Well, a number of my dolls were technically unplanned because I wasn't actively looking to shell those characters... (Iplehouse just has an evil tendency to come up with sculpts I love for them).
But the real outlier is my Luts Lio Griffon. He's my only Luts, my only anthro-sculpt, and my only centaur-type doll. He doesn't belong to any of the resin groups (the other tinies all represent old RP personas of mine, but the Griffon doesn't even have a name). And as much as I love his little paws, I'm afraid I don't really know what to do with him.
I mainly bought him because a Griffin/Gryphon was my high-school's mascot, to be honest. :sweat

    25. I don't have a "baker's dozen" doll, myself... but my wife does!

Roughly a year or so ago, we ordered an Impldoll Idol body for one of her floating heads. At the time, Impl had an event going on where you buy over a certain amount, you get a doll head and/or a full body, depending on how much you spent. As we'd only gotten the Idol body (and maybe an outfit? I think? I can't quite remember...), we were just under for the full doll portion of the event, but we qualified for the free head. Woohoo! So she picked a head, and in the order went!

A month or so later--I can't quite remember how long it took, unfortunately--, the box arrived! Inside was a wrapped up mummy! and...something else? That looked like another wrapped up mummy!

So, anyway, long story short... Since we were only like, ten or so dollars short from getting the full event doll, Impldoll gave us the full doll! :D It was a wonderfully pleasant surprise!

    26. I started out with 3 to 8 (depending if you count heads) 1/3 Cerberus Project Delf Elves in Beauty White for the first 2 years. Then I went to a Volks L.A. Tea Party and got my first Normal Skin non-Elf-eared boy (Shirou One-Off). He was the odd one... but only until the next year when I got a surprise box in the mail. A friend sent me her Volks Cyndy 2 fullset! So then I had a pair of humans in normal skin.

This kept happening (not a rare thing for bjd owners!). First tiny anthro (Alice piggy), and then I got a Pipos Bao after. I just reconciled myself to getting two or more of whatever new odd dolls appealed to me. But I DO have some odd ones that never really got any friends:

      [IMG]12-05-Alberta_4788 by aprilllee, on Flickr

Doll-Chateau Alberta "Thalia"... (Moose antler hears and 4 human feet, 1/4 size). D-C made more of these odd centaurs, but I don't own any others and she doesn't even really go with other centaurs. I got a Soom Mini Shale years later, but... too different to go together.

      [IMG]14-08-crobi-leo_7809 by aprilllee, on Flickr

Crobidoll G-Line Leo "Trystan"... 78cm! He's definitely an oddball in my collection due to size. I think I went a little crazy when I ordered him, but he's still kind of cool.

Mushroom Peddler Impling Blue Willow "Aisling" ... She's around 32cm, so odd height and odd proportions. Wears tiny-sized clothes and 8/9" wigs! I love her. I'd love to get her a friend, but haven't so far, poor thing!

...with over 70 dolls I definitely have a lot of odd after-thoughts... but they're still a lot of fun to have.

    28. Copernica wasn't supposed to happen. My dolls were going to be story/character type dolls, not Art Dolls. Then I had this event head from DIM that I kept because it was too pretty to part with... and one day I got hit with a bolt out of the blue as to what had to be done with it.

Now she's one of my best beloved dolls and is never far away from me, especially when I am lonely or sick.

    29. I guess the most unusual circumstance was my very first doll. I was still new to the hobby and Luts had two different Ani options (male and female)

The difference in the two listings never quite... clicked.

The boy photos were also very feminine, in a kind of punky way, and I thought it was a girl, I guess.

I planned for my first doll to be a girl, named Anna and put my order through. I was excited and talking to my friend and sent her the link and she pointed out the very obvious 'boy' in the title and asked if that was the exact page I got it from.

Whoops. Luckily, it didn't matter much and my first doll just wound up being a boy instead.

    30. I don't really make impulse purchases, so the closest I have to a "baker's dozen" doll is Missy, my Mystic Kids Lillian. I had planned on shelling her character as a Mystic Kids Evelyn and even purchased said sculpt, but the seller changed their mind after I sent my payment. I was so disappointed that I went to The JunkySpot's website and just bought an in-stock MK mini... but the only girl they had at the time was Lillian. I hesitated but added her to my cart, anyway.

I admit, it took me a while to bond with Missy's resin form because she didn't look quite as I had planned, but these days I'm very happy with her and wouldn't trade her for any other sculpt. <3

    31. I think that's Rose, my minifee Woosoo who I adopted from a friend. I loved Rose when she was still my friend's doll. I'm not really fond of fairyland or minifee's but Rose had something special. After a few years my friend contacted my saying that she wanted to rehome Rose, and she first offered her to me. Since I had just bought another doll, I said no at first, but when I put down the phone, I think it was only a few minutes, I send her a message that I couldn't let Rose go to someoneelse and that I would love to adopt her. So Rose is living with me.

    32. I just impulsively bought a Pukifee Mio.....She was too cute and I couldnt resist.

    33. Funny how my bonus doll is the one I ended up using for the triathlon.

I wasn't even suppose to order him... it wasn't planned at all!
Granado offer their models for a month usually.
So Neptune got out at some point and I thought he was cute, but that's all.
As the month goes by, I kept going back to their webpage to look at him, ... until my willpower failed me and I bought him right before the deadline.

I had no plans for him, no "already made" character for him to embrace.
So I improvised ^^ And my love for him kept growing.
I never regretted this impulsive purchase.

    34. I've had a few unplanned dolls. I sold most of them and worked others into the group. But then there's Excelsior Z. Klipspringer, my green Lishe B&G hybrid.

I saw a really cheap and horribly green Lishe head on the MP a few years ago and thought it would be fun to try to fix up and use for practice. The head was old and stained, so I gave it a dark, dramatic faceup to hide the staining. I kind of liked it, so I found a heavily yellowed, also kind of green B&G body and put them together.

He's ridiculous looking, so I gave him an absurd name and had him in a green wig with green eyes for a long time. I sometimes think about selling him but realistically, he's not worth as much as I'd spend on an outfit for another doll  ...and I'd probably regret it. He stands out like a sore, and excessively painted thumb amongst the rest of my collection.
