I have one of those little fidget toy sharks that my mom got me for Christmas. That I believe is the extent of my 3D items xD
You'd be surprised how affordable they're becoming. I got a 9.8" Qidi i-box for Xmas for $299 off Amazon, though it's not showing up atm. It has a huge print size for the price, roughly 2 sizes bigger than my small printer, which was $199 a couple years ago. I unfortunately haven't been able to test the new one much as my craft room is implodeded at the moment. But it's huuuuge!
I have been meaning to check on prices of 3-D printers, nowadays. I know that the plastic filament ones are a dime a dozen. (Well, word of mouth says such.) But I would definitely want a resin one. I hear they stink to high heaven though, and my current space is definitely not prepped for more consumption of space via crafts nor well enough ventilated anywhere.
I just bought a resin 3D printer with my birthday money last week, so that I can print the BJDs I’ve been sculpting. It’s an Elegoo Mars 3, and I paid around $280-ish for it, and then I also bought a wash and cure station for around $115 to go with it. I am SO glad I finally took the plunge and bought it, because I absolutely love it! I already went through two bottles of resin and am bummed because I can’t use it until I have the funds to buy some more.
I've been curious about resin printers and how much you get out of a bottle. Seeing as they tend to be a lot more expensive than filament. So, very roughly, how many prints does a bottle generally provide?
I got a full MSD out of roughly one bottle (1000g Elegoo standard beige resin) I think that was 4 prints, iirc? They’re were quite large prints, though. Out of the two bottles I bought, I got one full doll, 3 floating heads, about 3/4 of a body, a lower leg/knee test print and the Elegoo test print they give you, which is a pair of chess rooks. I’ve still got some resin in the vat, but I’ll need to buy more before I can print again, or I’d probably run out mid-print.
Please keep us up to date on your adventures!!! I'm very curious about irl results and then comparing them to each other to see what I like best~
my sisters have 3d printers-- one has a regular plastic filament one, she printed me my dice tower, the other has a resin printer she hasn't set up yet, but she's working on sculpting a doll.
Just wanted to update to say I’m still loving my resin 3D printer. I wanted to share some of my girls with y’all. I get roughly one 40” doll per 1000g bottle of resin. You might be able to get more with slimmer dolls though, because my girls are really thick, and their bellies especially take up a lot of resin. Untitled by Nikki Kelly, on Flickr I definitely recommend getting one if you’ve been on the fence! I’m having so much fun with mine.
Started playing around with different resin colors after feeling a bit more confident in my prints/settings. Untitled by Nikki Kelly, on Flickr
@dxgirly I think I've seen ur dolls on insta!! They're super cool! I've been trying out sculpting and printing dolls and heads lately, here are some attempts:
@dxgirly I love that body! The tummy has such a realistic soft look to it and she has such great dips and curves... and looks equally good in all three colors! Lots of potential with her, so cool to see her styled different ways and also how she looks blank. @_goblincat ohhh CUTE
I've been busy these past couple of years trying to master the 3D resin printing techniques with my Ash elf boy design. Somehow I don't think I'll ever perfect him, but these are some of my efforts so far...
I'm curious how you guys find the quality of resin printed dolls? How does it compare to 'regular' resin? Also, can you Rit dye them? I have my eyes on a 3D printed doll, I don't like the colour options much!
Some brands or colors of printing resin are more prone to visibly yellowing quickly than the typical BJD resin. Transparent clear is usually the problem child of the lot, opaque colors are usually not too bad. Fragility can be an issue which is also exacerbated with too much UV light, but it also depends on the size you're printing and the particular resin you are using. Like Siraya Tech Tenacious has more impact resistance than Elegoo Standard. You would have to check the specific printing resin on whether or not it will tolerate boiling temperatures for rit dye because not all of them do. You can also add dye or mica powder to printing resin before printing for custom colors. I recommend testing dyes on a small print first though. I bought some cheap alcohol dye and some of the colors are so fugitive that the pink evaporates in sunlight while doing the final cure for the print. I know Monocure makes dye specific to 3D printing resin, but I have not tried it yet.
You can ask them to make it in a different filament or resin colour. There are many colour options available. I have been 3d printing since 2017 and have many colours to choose from.
Personally I’m a big fan of 3D printed dolls! I have my eye on a 3D printed jackalope BJD from MissNekotaku at the moment. I’m flip flopping on whether I want to get clear pigmented resin for the horns/etc; I know it yellows faster but gosh, it looks so cute
Hello! I am absolutely LIVING for nearly all of Quirky Qritters sculpts at the moment and don't know which one I want to get first! lol. Does anyone here have the succulent inspired one? Sorry I forgot the name. Am sick right now and can't be arsed to look it up. BUT! I love the look of it so much and would love to see how you guys have customized her if you have her.
I wanted to show off my most recently made girl. This is Raspberry. Raspberry by Nikki Kelly, on Flickr
