I'm currently crazy about 3D printing so I would like to see what you've printed or bought. (Especially Braq's dragon if you have one) I just purchased a jointed robot and I can't wait to get him.
Oh! What a funny coincidence! I just ordered a 3D print of my own bjd head sculpt to try out the other day. I own a few 3D printed mini props right now and they're super cute but surprisingly strong
I have an Eve Studio guy, he weighs nothing and feels fragile like an eggshell but he's held up so far. I treat him with the care I'd treat a resin.
I own a cerberus skeleton from Mythic Articulations on etsy. It was a gift. It's quite lovely, the detail is amazing, and despite it having pretty thin pieces, nothing has broken thus far (had it for a year or two). It has kind of an odd texture, extremely toothy, but it's not unpleasant. In the future I plan to buy more from the same company/artist.
@BlackSheep Oh man i've always wanted a mythic articulations print. Are they posable or is it just a fixed statuette type deal? o:
I have rather a lot of Makies, which were all 3d printed. They are quite light and very porous but surprisingly robust. I love em. I also have a little rabbit bjd from DollartbyJulie. he was a real pain to string and he's quite rough because he was printed with filliment not powder, but he's cute. I also have a doll "core" by her that's about 1/6 scale, it's like a skeleton with the joints already printed and the idea is you sculpt over it to make your own doll. I liked the idea of a sort of diy kit, so i'm looking forward to trying it out. I have a lot of 3d printed weapons for my dolls. And I want a Braq... I really want one lol. They are quite large aren't they? I'd love to see pics of a regular scale one alongside some dolls. I'd love some of those little jointed robots too. I have a doll (he's a makie) who's a roboticist in his spare time so I like collecting random robots for him hahah. It's fun.
@purple_monkfish The little robot is for one of my dolls that is a roboticist, too! I saw those cores, they're neat. And a Braq Dragon is definitely on my want list. I'd love to have one. (or 5!) Anyone have pics of their lovely 3D printed items?
It depends! The ones they sell as "in a can" versions are made to be posable. You assemble them yourself, they snap together and have joints. Mine is just the regular cerberus, so he's a statue and can't pose, but his jaws do open and close and the collars/chains around his necks aren't fixed in place so I can move them. I really want some of the movable ones though, mostly the wyvern. (And for the record, there is a movable version of the cerberus.)
Oh man that is so cool!! Part of why I love BJDs is the poseable aspect of it?? I'm also into plastic figure modeling and stuff like that so it was a bit of a gate way for me. I'll definitely have to check it your recommendation then!!
I had never heard of Mythic Articulations before, but looked them up after finding this thread today. They look so cool! I may or may not have just ordered the posable Griffin...
___ in a can have been one of my things to look in to if I ever have spare doll money. There's a company on Etsy that does cats with optional faces, including "angry", and other creatures. My Eve guy feels toothy, I haven't painted him yet but I got him second hand and he came with some "touch dirt" which he seems to get if you just look at him. The best way I've found to clean him a super soft tooth brush and baking soda. I'm thinking of taking some chalk powder and rubbing it in to him to give him a base skin tone and working from there but I don't know what to use for a sealer.
My robot shipped today! I'm super excited. I'll probably have to sand him when he gets here. I guess we'll just see if I can deal with his roughness. It might not bother me at all.
@Dark Angel Oh! Is it SLS or FDM printed? O: with FDM prints, sanding can cause microcracks in the plastic from what I hear and it's more obvious on darker filaments but it can be fixed with a quick blast from a heat gun
It's FDM. Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that. I've been watching YouTube videos on how to sand plastic. Looks easy enough, just time consuming.
To me the guy feels toothy like sketch paper, maybe like some old porcelain dolls. You can feel a texture but it shouldn't be distracting.
@TomB There's a lot up for sale on shapeways! They're a 3D printing company Some are labeled for BJDs but some are just miniatures so you'll have to look around and see what you find They also have a lot of other nifty stuff
Thank you! I'll see what I can find there. I'm looking for spear or poleaxe points. I can glue them to shafts myself. I found files to print them but I don't have a 3D printer and though I love the technology I can't see myself buying one. (I can get another doll for that much)
@TomB You can submit the files to shapeways for printing then! It's how I got my own bjd head sculpt done owo/ I just recommend that if you didn't create the model then keep the print file set for personal use rather than for sale on shapeways
So... Apparently my robot did NOT ship. A shipping label was created and the post office was notified that it will be shipping sometime. Ugh. I wish it wouldn't send me an email saying that it shipped when it hasn't. Got me all excited for nothing.
My robot arrived the other day and I am smitten! He's such a charming little thing. I had to file some of the extra plastic from between his fingers but other than that I'm not going to sand him. My only complaint is the torso piece keeps popping off. It doesn't like to sit on the stomach piece. Oh well.
Oh that's really cute! Congrats! If you're good with apoxie then you can add a slight ridge along where it slips off kind of like how some BJDs have.
Hey there, Does anyone have a 3d printer themselves? I've ordered Wanhao duplicator 7 - it's a resin 2d printer. Can't wait to try it out! Super nervous, since the material isn't as cheap as plastic, but the quality is quite good. I would like to print bjd of my own design, though first I will need to learn the software for 3d modeling...... one day.... I've heard that printed miniatures are really fragile. Is that true?
On Apoxie Sculpt- Get a small amount at a hobby store, or Milliput which is similar and sold at Hobby Lobby, and just play with it. You only get about 45 minutes-hour working time but wet adds easily to dry so you can pace yourself. It sets fully in 24 hours, can be painted, carved what not. I've made small heads, added hair, replaced parts, reattached broken parts...
I also would like to know more about faceuping a 3D printed doll. I have a few pet dolls still blank because I'm terrified to do it.
I attempted my custom made bjd thats 3-d printed, with acrylic paints and it didn't turn out that good so I'm currently still sanding it and trying to remove it and I'm refusing to attempt it again till i find a good way of doing it cuz i have a lot of love for this lil one
Does anyone know who is the original sculptor of the huge 3D printed Dragon that so many people are selling on Etsy? It has to have been someone's original art, right? I'd feel bad buying one if it was stolen or plagiarized by all except the artist so ...who is the actual artist? Is one seller the genuine creator?
So the way I understand it is that it is ok to use/print. It's on thingiverse and anyone can save the files and print it. I think. Edit: Here's my robot all painted.
Does anyone here know about RML doll? I know that they have a feature where you can design your own head but I can't seem to get it to work. Have you guys used t yet?
Braq was a file created under creative commons license, meaning anyone can print it, sell it, alter it. A lot of people release files like this, and the community trouble shoot them too and do "remixes". These 3rd party sellers are basically charging for the printing service and finishing and stringing. Because 3d printing isn't cheap and sanding each of the bits and stringing it all up is a pain in the butt. I recommend Jollybuild because their prices are the most reasonable across Etsy and they even do unfinished kits that you can string and sand yourself to save a bit of money (you're basically just paying for the print and shipping then) I have my eye on a braq and that huge long sea serpent too. They look like fun. is RML still up and running? I remember playing with their generator but it wasn't clear who they were and how legit their company was, nor did it seem they were still that active so I didn't go any further with it. Cool idea though. Kinda like Makies (the now defunct toy line). I think bjds could easily adopt this sort of technology, especially considering you CAN print resin now. Faceupping 3d printed things depends on what they're made of. 3d printed nylon feels a bit like woodgrain and is VERY porus so be wary of dark colours, they will seep in and be a pain to remove. Seal the heck outta it first. Pencils work great on them because it's a rough surface. If you use paint it sinks in leaving a quite flat surface which is really nice. It sort of soaks into the surface so you don't get the same clumping you can get on smooth surfaces. But it can bleed, so be wary of too liquid stuff. You can use the same material as you'd use for resin, it's just a bit rougher to work on (kinda like drawing on bark rather than paper lol) For standard filament printed stuff paint is about the best option because the stepped surface doesn't really take powder pigments like, at all (they just get trapped in all the gaps). They're a bit of a pain in that respect but you can paint them with acrylics just fine. Paint like you would any plastic and seal. I have a fair bit of 3dprinted stuff here so uh... yeah <_< For good measure, here's my latest Makie (secondhand of course, the company went bust in like 2016) Her name is Lucia or Lu for short and 3d printed Nylon dyed tan by the company.
@purple_monkfish thanks! I've had a go at blushing a 3D printed Elleo cat, and with sealing it, it was a lot like a much toothier resin.
awesome. I think the elleo things might be nylon too, which is laser bound powder so makes for a more solid structure.
I haven't bought him yet, but I was thinking of getting a Braq! He's so cool! It's hard to decide what color to get him in, though. A seller I found offered him in black with sparkles though, which is SO tempting... like a night sky dragon or something!
I went to school for 3d modeling, but I think it's exciting that SLA printing could easily open the market to people it was not really open to before. I am excited to see what the imaginations out there come up with. Also there is a 3d program called Daz 3D. It gives you a A very basic model to start out with. you twist wheels and such to refine the model into whatever your imagination can come up with, and then you can import it into 3d studio max or Blender, to add even more details and create ball joints. I have a 3d resin printer and I am currently working on my own doll. I have the parts done and am working on refining them in the slicer program to add supports for SLA printing. I am so excited for all of this. contrary to what many might think, however, WEEKS or even MONTHS of work can go into a 3d printed ball jointed doll. another thing I love is that the resin I use, I can use acetone on it without hindering the surface at all. My first girl is a vampire, with two alternate heads, several hands, and two sets of feet. one high heeled and one flat. I cannot wait to start my doll company, which I have been working on for several years now.
Oh those dragons are pretty awesome! I got hooked on designing and 3d printing my bjd's a while ago. It takes alot of time but its so much fun to create. My TNG Alien is (more or less) done. Bastet and Sekhmet are about 2/3 done. Still very much a work in progress. They are all printed using an FDM printer.
Reviving this thread to ask Which sellers on Etsy are selling their own LEGIT work? Please chime in if you're sure enough about a seller to recommend them!
Hi there, I'm new to the hobby but I cannot recommend Quirky Qritters on etsy enough, I'll be getting my first BJD from them in a few weeks. The artist has been SUPER communicative and kind. I can let you know how my baby bat feels when he arrives if you'd like!
THanks! I am totally getting myself a lil Pebble. I will call him Bonneville. So far I know about: Braq the dragon is a free use free sale printing anyone may be selling Etsy Shops: Quirky Qritters MissNekotaku ElleoDolls WalloyaMorring
Oh the pebbles are so adorable! I think that's a great name for it too! Really I'm quite fond of nearly all of that artists BJDs for sale.
Thank you! It's... an extremely niche geology joke and a nod to the reason there is no topsoil where I live. It's all pebbles bound together with clay. And the maker did let me get very specific on the custom color- I can highly recommend this artist. So Bonneville will match the local rocks and will totally get his own photoshoot.
Oh that's really cool! My bat is going to be modeled after a Hondurian white bat! So my order wasn't too specific, unusual eye color aside, but the artist has been so nice to put up with all of my questions about care of the doll. They're super communicative and I couldn't recommend them enough.
One thing i love about the 3d printing bjds is that they can get such small scales. My girl Poppy is 1/12 and she has more articulation then some larger dolls i own. I plan on buying a second once another figure of mine comes in if poppy looks good along side it.
Ah dang the image is broken. =/ well here is just a direct link to her. Sorry about that. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FH5KzsnVkB4xWi2?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
NekrasovDolls on Etsy makes 3D Printed BJD's from 11cm-30cm size. I ordered the 14cm size cause I wanted to have a doll on my computer desk until I can get the rest of my BJD's out of storage. The price is really sweet too.
I got a 3d printed animal crossing bjd from an etsy seller named Pastel Puppster. I got mine customized to be Skye owo
There's also the Polaris dolls on Thingiverse, as well as some other BJDs. I highly recommend checking it out, as they're all free/opensource. I printed a 1/3 scale Polaris with a remixed face, and she came out lovely. Posability: She has pretty good posability, with double jointed hips (I think, she has peanuts for hip joints, and can scrunch up pretty well) The reprinted legs, feat. Critical Role Making a bodice pattern, since she's a bit bigger than smart dolls in the shoulders, and I was mostly going off of those for patterns for this doll, so I modified them for this doll. The eyes are also 3D printed from Thingiverse, and painted by me with water color pencils.
I paid an artist on Etsy, DarkGreenForest, to sculpt an open eyed and sleeping head of my character- and I'm so thrilled with the results! Right now he's being printed by another artist, who will also be doing his faceup (and is color matching the head for the body I have). I'm so excited to get him!
Not yet! But she did finish printing and painting him. She’s in the process of getting magnets for the heads and then will be shipping them. I’ll definitely post once I get him though. Thank you for being interested!!
Braqs dragon is so cool! I tried to print it a few times but I use SLA printers and I always have issues with supports getting stuck inside the limbs :') maybe one day when I get better. I have some 3d printed animal bjds from this thingiverse user! They make amazing animal models, and super easy to print and put together!
